For a bleak setting of the original material, Del Toro sure knows how to improvise his own world-building. Colorful yet really gothic and mystical, it doesn't come off too edgy or too whimsical. It works.
“As soon as the Golden Army was stored here, a plague of silence and death befell us” feels like a line that could’ve come from Mike Mignola. There is no direct causal reason why that sentence makes sense, but magic in Hellboy is deeply associative. Feelings, impressions, and metaphors play a very active role in the physical state of objects.
Del Toro has a way of making things seem realistic. He cleverly combines practical effects and CGI with world building to make it feel real.
Pacific Rim for example, you almost for a second believe that we could actually build Jaegers because he made them feel real

Fun Fact: The reason the Golden Army is situated on the island of Ireland is cause Prince Nuada, King Balor and the rest of the Bethmoora clan are based on the Fomorians who were a supernatural race from Irish mythology. The native language you hear them speaking is Irish albeit poorly pronounced in parts.

David Harbour woulda knocked it outta the park if he'd been given this script.
Hellboy has one of the most diverse creatures.
That is what made it great! All the different sets and creature designs. So much more depth vs the new version.
The studio execs were idiots not letting Del Toro do things his way with Hellboy 3, which led to his departure.

Man the makeup work Del Toro does is amazing. He sure knows how to make creatures shows proper emotion without CGI very very well. Even Disney's Star Wars and Marvels (the skrulls from Captain Marvel especially) still looks very stiff.

Funny how they were planning on going to the Prince to force him to remove the spear tip but they got there and not only did they meet someone who could take them to the prince, but in the SAME LOCATION as the army was also the very individual who could save Hellboy without having to confront the prince about it.

Well as a couple of individuals have stated here, new does not always mean better. People with a mentality of "new is always better" have an I.Q. lower than a gerbil's.
The reason the original Hellboy films are better than the reboot is due to the fact that the director actually respected the mythology of the films, and the original Hellboy films also had two things that the reboot lacked bigtime. Those were great direction, and purpose. Not to mention the reboot visuals and story suffered bigtime by being at the hands of greedy people who simply wanted to save money. CGI could have worked out, but they simply threw things at wall with a couple of horror elements here and there, while also applying a senseless story.
Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy films are actually great since he focused on bringing the vision he had for the Hellboy films to life. Paying attention to detail and the mythology behind it, while also following the purpose of telling a good story, that turned out to be great, and a masterpiece in my opinion. Just sayin'.

@@98953812 You'd be surprised how many people defend the reboot though, saying it is better than Guillermo's version, when the reboot actually sucked so bad. Not sure how people love the reboot. Those people probably have an IQ lower than a gerbil, and probably liked the reboot for the reason that it is only a newer version. Just because something is rebooted/renewed to it's original version, it doesn't always mean it's better. Just look at the windows program renews every couple of years: Windows 8, Windows 9, Windows 10, they fail to vary, and even have flaws which make them worse than the previous versions.
Guillermo's Hellboy films had that mystical feel which the reboot lacks. That's because Guillermo actually applied what matters to have a great movie in both of his Hellboy films, and that is direction and purpose while also respecting the mythology. The new reboot had a senseless story and it simply threw things at the wall with a couple of horror elements here and there. It really lacked alot. Yet many people still like it due to the reason that its new, and since it's new it must mean it's better. When that is not always the case.
The demon invasion at the end of the 2019 one was the only halfway decent part. Rest of it was poopoo

Why hell boy and hell boy 2 had very impressive graphics as compared to hell boy 3 .....
It's for the reason that Hellboy 3 is not Hellboy 3. It's a reboot of the whole franchise. The first 2 Hellboy movie scripts were actually written by the same person that directed them: Guillermo del Toro. He wrote and finished the script for the third Hellboy movie but no studio wanted to fund it since they thought it was too expensive. So the third Hellboy movie was never made, and with it, the original story by Del Toro was left inconclusive. With time, the company with the rights to Hellboy hired a studio to do a reboot of the whole franchise and the new Hellboy was released. But since Guillermo del Toro did not write and direct it, which means he also did not apply his ideas to that movie, the new Hellboy movie lacked alot, including the "impressive graphics".
The reason why is b/c HB2 had better CGI artists, more time spent on CGI, and having to compensate for the dated 2008 CGI. It's the same reason why Akira anime still looks so good is because the amount of time, effort, and intricate art design ("cell anime") makes for a better looking production.

I have a feeling that the Golden Army wasn't cleaned properly before they were placed in storage, so they carried all kinds of plaques and diseases back with them from wherever they were sent or from sick soldiers they killed, which contaminated the city and killed everyone as a result. And it was mistaken for a curse.
