I don't get the complaints about Skyrim's combat -- sure its simple, even simplistic in some ways, but that has its pros as well as cons. I don't see where its clunky -- it was perfectly responsive last time I played. What is this "weight" people talk about and seem to want so badly anyway? And what does it even mean to be "floaty"? A good game should have simple, ergonomic, and responsive controls, which Skyrim does, not perfectly but for the most part.
Now, the overly linear quests, limited and sometime meaningless dialogue choices, limited consequence to the player character, limited-to-lacking visible effects of player actions on the world -- that I can see. That really seems a valid and worthy critique. Simplified RPG mechanics, sure, that is spot on, for better or worse to your taste, though I can appreciate more detail in such things.

By weight, they mean the feeling you get from handling an object. In this case, it refers to visual and audio indicators that the sword has hit something. For example, to be more specific, the speed with which the sword moves should decrease when it hits an opponent's body and there should be an audio feedback of that hit that makes it seem like it was a powerful hit dealing damage. There is some audio and video feedback, but it seems more like a small slice, not a deep cut wounding an opponent. Why do we want it? Because it feels more satisfying and less arcadey. Fundamentally, it's about creating the illusion of weight, that a sword isn't very easy to handle, that it has multiple possible movesets, instead of just swing and hard swing. Like a real sword, it should feel like it's not easy to swing.

Skyrim is the best cozy game. What other game can you waste time just wandering the open world.

@peacefusion First, I want to apologize for the long comment but it shouldn't take more than a minute or two of your time at most.
I do agree with you, but to answer the question that you posed in your comment, though you did end the sentence with a period, making me question if you meant it to be rhetorical or if that was a mere typo: All of the games from the X franchise, meaning for example, X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict, X4: Foundations, that entire franchise. More examples I would put out there include Black Desert Online, Elden Ring, Civilization 7(when it comes out), the entire collection of Tony Hawk's games, just to name a few. Each of the games I've mentioned are built in just such a way that they do in fact, while still of course having their limitations, encourage in their own ways, just wandering their world spaces to some extent or another.
My intention in replying to your comment is in no way at all meant to argue or suggest that you are incorrect, but more so, to give you credit for a completely valid point and question, again, if it was meant that way, that really should be brought to the conversation around all of these games. Still, Skyrim accomplished the same goal, in a way that the others didn't.

For me it's the modding. I share most of your grievances about Skyrim, but I have addressed them with mods, at least in my game. There is no game that exist in which I have interest in playing for more than 200 hours except for Skyrim. I even admit to say that I have never or have any interest in completing the main Skyrim quest line, but I'm still excited to play it today like it's a new game release. I play Skyrim with multiple modpacks that vary in focus which keeps gameplay fresh and nearly unrecognizable from the original release. I'm very grateful to Bethesda for allowing us to modify their games.

Ive put countless hours into Skyrim. Own a copy on steam. Both vanilla and Se, ps4 and switch. And I never completed main quest. And recently I restarted a playtrough. Updated my mods that became outdated and having a go again.
Favorite gameplay is sneaky character using bow. Switching to 2 harder when in melee with adding runes into the mix.
    Good vid. Subbed.

There is a 3rd option with love triangle with you clearly missed by rushing. There is the option of romancing Camilla. In my opinion Skyrim is worth playing both without & with mods. It’s a modders paradise so what’s the problem ? I’m guessing if some players don’t like Skyrim it’s because they have been spoiled by Witcher & other games. But for me i like Skyrim worts and all as it stands given that it is a fully RPG for my basic needs😊

For me, it's because it's believable as a world. It makes you feel like you're really there. This is mostly because Elder Scrolls games are not just Open-World; they're sandboxes. They go so far as to let you pick up random items. And that doesn't just mean "add them to your inventory"; it means you can literally pick up and manipulate the items in real-time. Shout at a table, and watch all of the random items get thrown all over the place, using realistic physics for each individual item. Come back days later, and see all of those objects still lying right where you left them.
That's what sets Elder Scrolls games apart from the rest, and it baffles me that no one else tries to do it.
I also cringe when people try to make the combat "souls-like", since that requires a 3rd-person camera, completely defeating the entire immersive point of the games.

I agree with your approach and thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I'm a fan of third-person cameras, so I would have liked combat animations to be taken a bit further. Even so, thanks to what you mentioned earlier, I really love Skyrim.
