A stunning gloriously perfect example of Chrysler's stylist Virgil Exner at his wildest and best 1955 to 1963, an artist in steel!

My thoughts exactly. This was Chrysler at its best. Yes Virgil Exner knocked this out of the park, a real home run in style and design. This is certainly a far cry from hauling rocks in Mexico to a concours winner. What a car, this is absolutely stunning. Have a gr8 God blessed day Lou.

  • @Clarkecars
    @Clarkecars 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Stunning! I take particular pride in knowing that these MOPARs by Exner are more valuable than bowties and ovals of the period (of course there are some fuelie vettes that are exceptions). This is truly a beautiful unit.

My favorite 50’s car. The D500 convertible, with record player is so rare, I can see why this miraculous restoration was done. I saw a two door hardtop in Cuba, in this magnificent color combo. The gentleman used painted coke bottles to repair the tail lights (as parts are hard to get there).👏👍Thanks Lou and Ken!🙏🇺🇸

“HIghway HiFi”...what a hoot!! This car is probably the absolute epitome of Mid-century automotive design and colors of any car manufacturer. This chrome is when chrome was actual chrome and unlike chrome-plated plastics pieces of today’s cars.

Highway HiFi is an unusual recordplayer in that both grooves on record & stylus tip radius are half the size of a normal Lp.Higher than usual music storage 16 & 2/3rds RPM records playing for 1/2 hour per side.Contemporary reports give the unit favourable reports on account of it being near impossible to make the pick up arm skip no matter how rough the road. The shortage of record titles for this format means that these players are rare today.Kim Gutske will cut records with music that you want to listen to for these machines. Both car & music system are examples of the world's highest standard of living-written by a non U.S. resident.

If grew up in a Mopar family. We had DeSotos, Dodges, and Plymouths. I had mostly the late 60 muscle cars, GTX, Road Runner, and 340 Duster etc. Of course we loved the power, and torque. As a kid I loved that, as my own cars rusted out, they became even faster. The best part about the late 50s and early 60s Mopars, is they all looked like they were designed for intergalactic space travel. Love the Custom Royal Lancer Super D convertible. It's sweeeet !

Thanks Lou. Really love the detail art and color designers were creating in this era. Cars have become slightly more interesting in most recent years but we'll never get back the fluted, filigree, cloisonne brocade etc details we had back then. One thing I hoped I'd see in the video was a demonstration of the swivel seat operation. They turned out only about 45 degrees, not like the 90 degree swivel seats available in some GM cars of the '70s. There are illustrations of this function in company sales literature showing how a long legged lady in an evening dress could maintain her modesty during entry and egress.

My grandpa had a 1957, Dodge Coronet, D500, 8.75 posi rear, 4 door sedan, red/ white.
He had lots of issues with the transmission...he said it was air cooled...must have been the 2 speed. My Mom used to drive it some...she said it was powerful.
He had to get the cylinder heads re worked also. So, he traded it in on a 1963 Dodge 330, 318 Torqueflite 727...Aqua Blue.
I wish he had kept the 57 longer...I would have it today.

Virgil must have had a mild OCD because the details show that he had a Theme to every area .
Take a look at the LIGHTER knob at 00:06:06 and then go to the Wheel covers at the 00:08:48 mark to the same 4 prong design in a larger scale. The record player was an Option in the 1957 Bel Air..... but even after the breakthough for Transistor around 1956 where the price came down , that 1959 Player still needed time to warm up the Vacuum tubes because the high-end 1959 Tbird actually boasted about the Optional radio with 6 Tubes .

Interesting construction note: the fins on the 59 Dodge look grafted on, not flowing from the body panels. Compare these fins with 59 Plymouth, Imperial, DeSoto fins. Virgil Exner was really having fun with the Dodge styling. Very much influenced by jet and rocket designs, including illustrations for science fiction art and comics. Just look at those tail lights. The paint just screams 1950s and exotic tropical locations. Another great find Lou.

To be honest ......1958 was very cruel to Detroit after the sales boom post-war that saw 12 good years . FORD had cut back the spending for the Designing dept and had axed the make-over for the 1960 Tbird , it was made it clear to take the 1959 and make it look Fresh to sell in 1960 .
The Tbird was given more Options and colour choice inside and out , the rear now had 6 lights while the 430 Lincoln engine stayed as an option that saw about 250 paired with the Sun Roof option . Sales jumped almost 50% for a record year of 93K produced but the 61-63 did change much where sales dropped and FORD needed the new 64-66 body to bail it out .
What surprised people was that in 1959 we saw Rambler as the only Detroit based maker having an increase in sales , the value and wide car with a big 6 and heafty V8 was also popular with the police departments and Taxi companies.

Also, that's 16 2/3 RPM, not 16 1/2 RPM on the "Highway Hi-Fi" record. It happens that 2 x 16 2/3 = 33 1/3, which is the RPM for LPs. So it seems obvious that they slowed it down to 1/2 speed. Keep up the good work Lou! I love your Ancientmobile vids!
