    Take it from someone who's seen this car, it's a wowzer, absolutely gorgeous. He was robbed best of show at a recent Chrysler club car show. They chose a '57 Ford retractable, go figure. You not only won't find another '57 D 500 Royal Lancer you won't find a prettier one. Love that coral and white! My bad I thought it was a Royal lancer it is a Coronet lancer.

    I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but that is not a Custom Royal, it is a Coronet. If it were a Custom Royal, it would have Custom Royal name plates on the front fenders, wider fin outline mouldings and a fancier interior. Lancer was simply Dodge speak for a pillarless body style, two door, four door or convertible. Therefore, the car is a Dodge Coronet Lancer convertible.

      @danielulz1640 thanks for straightening me out. I'm a little confused, I thought the Coronet was a Coronet and the Royal Lancer was a Royal Lancer. Didn' know their was a Coronet Lancer. That's all right I'm still havin' trouble with all the De Soto models also.

      Nice, racy lines! My Dad said that the “Forward Look” Chrysler cars were “freaky” looking, and the 1958 GM cars had excessive “gingerbread trim”. LOL! He did finally buy a new 1958 Buick Special Riviera 4 door hardtop.
      Many years ago I bought a well done hardcover book, “Chrome: Glamour Cars of the Fifties”, by Brian Laban. 35 cars have write ups, specs, and MSRP’s. One of the cars is a 1954 Dodge Royal Convertible Indy 500 Edition. If this book is still available, I am sure you would enjoy it. “Thanks for the Memories”.

    That little capacitor on top of the generator plays an important role. The power that comes from the generator is a pulsed power. The capacitor holds the power from the pulse (like a small battery) just long enough for the next pulse to arrive. Thus it smooths out the power and also cancels out that nasty AM radio interference that you'd get without it. Such a tiny piece but plays a very important role. Cheers Lou, another awesome vehicle from the age of the awesome!

    • @loucostabile

      HI Justin Case, Thanks for share the importance of that capacitor. Cheers, Lou

    • @ronwaters478
      @ronwaters478 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, not exactly. The condenser/capacitor is used for radio noise suppression. That's its only role.

    • @zulumax1
      @zulumax1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ronwaters478 Perhaps, but how he explained how the capacitor absorbs the EMF flyback pulse when the brushes make and break the circuit is not incorrect. Probably just too much information. You would also cause excessive sparking of the commutator/brushes and cause them to wear out sooner without it, but everything would function except for noise in the radio. Sometimes there is a capacitor on the fuse box or near the radio as well.

    • @ronwaters478
      @ronwaters478 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zulumax1- Not on late 50s Mopars. It's just a noise suppressor. Read the shop manual.

    Hi, Lou! The Dodge Boys described their 1957 cars as having "Swept Wing" styling, and indeed it looked like it could fly! It truly stood out back in its day with that massive front end with the big twin-bar bumper, floating emblem, headlights paired with parking lights and no grille, and that sweeping fin-tastic profile! You could get it painted in a single tone or one of three ways to two-tone: with the second color on the roof only, on the roof and fins, or on the roof, fins and lower body. Buz' car stands out even more now with its coral paint in today's sea of black, white, gray and silver, and the D-500 engine is truly the icing on the cake!
    Congratulations to Buz on this recent acquisition, and thanks to both of you for taking us along aboard this Queen of the Highway!

    I am a Packard and early ford guy but the Lancer is my favorite 50's car and I own a 55 constellation. This one is more than special - first, it's the top of the model line being the 'custom' Lancer (specials, just coronet is the low end) then the 500 package on top which was expensive and powerful at 290 hp. Someone did an excellent restoration to stock.
    It is a capacitor to protect the circuit from inductive surge. Must be replaced every 25 years, probably protecting a solenoid or relay.
    A Lancer is on my list but I like the 55 a little more - this car is super rare with this top of the line package. I love the color and this car - pure space age art.

    Beautiful classic mopar car !! That's a Awesome 1957 2door Dodge Coronet Custom Royal Lancer D500 convertible car , Especially with that baby hemi V8 engine ,just beautiful Condition !! The only thing that bothered me about this car and it's constructed criticism !! But that car has a 12 volt starting system, so either there's some Connection issues , Or a weak starter , or a weak battery, or It's to far advance on the timing making it to crank slow like that !! Because that car should start stronger then that !! But I would highly recommend for him too care of that issue !! But definitely a beautiful car 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😃😃💪💪💪👍👍👍

    This model also had the available option of the D-501 engine package, from Hemmings "1957 Dodge Coronet D-501; an all-out performance car that most enthusiasts, including the bulk of self-proclaimed Mopar authorities, barely know existed. It was an early homologation special, of which only 56 were confirmed built. Almost no normal open-source documentation about them can be had. To get it, you've got to know the right people, the few that knew the D-501s intimately....the D-501 utterly nailed the recipe for speed. It was the evolution of earlier performance Dodge options, the D-500 and D-500-1 engine groups, which could trace their lineage to the original Chrysler Hemi of 1951. The early Red Ram V-8s had Hemi heads, as well, but to save both weight and cost, the D-500s were using the Chrysler Poly head by 1957, which didn't require dual rocker shafts. They displaced 325 cubic inches." So it seems the D-500 in 1957 was not a true Hemi.

    This Coronet Convertible has the three speed, famous Mopar Torque Flite transmission with three speeds, very possibly the best automatic transmission ever made. The Power Flite, which had two speeds, was the original Mopar fully automatic and remained available as the economy automatic for several years after the Torque Flite Was introduced in summer of 1956. The last 1956 imperials had the newer three speed transmission rather than the older two speed from earlier in the model year.

    Of course I had to peep this being that I was driven around as a kid in '57 in a new Plymouth Custom Suburban wagon. Would've been nice to see this Coronet Lancer next to a '57 Belvedere convertible just for comparison as they are both sub top o' line models. But it would show you that the '57 Mopar convertibles all used that bulgy "compound radius" windshield which you will see the hard tops and sedans (and wagons) didn't use. GMs still had a simple bent flat piece. Love it, Lou! 👀

    My father bought a 57 Dodge. Pretty sure it just said cornet, but it had the Lancer and the knights head on the rear quarter panel and it did not have the fancy spinner hubcaps like this one did but it was a beautiful car. I’m thinking it was turquoise and white, pretty sure I was 10 or 12 years old and this was one of the first cars that I could reach the pedals and dad would let me drive it around the neighborhood or dirt roads. I always wish it had on the back and didn’t have that motor he had the smaller Poly and I remember him going down the road with the top down and the needle on the speedometer went just a shade past 120 and because the carpet was floating up off the floor made it feel like quite a surreal ride and I do remember it had a two barrel carburetorbut it seemed to run awful fast. I didn’t see too many other full-size cars taking the speedometer needle up to and maybe even a little past 120.

    Racy car Lou! My Dad once stated the Forward Look Chrysler cars were “too freaky and the 1958 GM cars had “too much gingerbread”. LOL! He did buy a new 1958 Buick Special 4 Door Riviera (hardtop). I bought a hardcover book many years ago entitled “Chrome: Glamour Cars of the Fifties”, by Brian Laban. He featured 35 cars with write ups, specs, and MSRP’s. One car was a 1954 Dodge Royal Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car Edition. You might like to see if you are still able to get a copy. “Thanks for the Memories”.

    …where do you find guys like Buzz, Lou…do you have one of those old giant Rolodex; and just spin the thing and say “…oh, yeah…Buzz, the big Mopar guy…about time we did another episode with this dude…great cars”…am I close??
    …anyhoo…Buzz’s Coronet Custom Royal Lancer was the cream of the crop for Dodge in the intro year for Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look” finned cars…that, quite literally, took GM and Ford by complete surprise…making their entries looking rather dowdy and hopelessly old fashioned by comparison…
    …these Dodges were lavished with chromed stainless decorations galore…everywhere you look, it carries some manner of adornment…
    …though standard power was from a 230.2cid/3.8L single barrel inline 6 cylinder and a column shift 3-speed manual…almost none were so fitted…the vast majority of dealer machines inventory cars got either the 325cid/5.3L 4 bbl. Hemi V8 mated to the 2-speed push button Power Flite automatic which made 285 horsepower; though a dual 4 bbl. version brought potential hp to 340…
    …Buzz’s beaut…in Glacier White and Tropical Coral is just soooo 50’s, and I trust that you felt like a pretty snazzy dude riding in this ultra-sharp car…
    …contact with your charmed life, Lou…and we will just tag along for the ride…👀👍🏼💞🆒😎

    THIS car is NOT a custom royal lancer, it IS a Coronet - those are model trim levels. You had the highest trim level being the Custom Royal Lancer, the Royal, and the lowest being the Coronet. It's also NOT a real D500 and didn't have power brakes. I owned and pieced together THIS car from 09-13 when I sold it along with a real D500 equipped 4 door car to a man in WA who did the restoration and a good job at that. I included the real D500 sedan as a parts car because the original 325 POLY motor was apart as well as a search tune radio. This car originally had a gold and black interior but the man I sold it to opted for black, I still have the original speedo and gold conv boot, IA dealer badge, and one of it's original CA plates from this car.. the only thing I was unable to find piecing this car together were the sunvisors. I just love how once this car hit the resell circuit the falsehoods and deceptive misinformation about the trim and model level and it being a "D500" just flows and flows... can't just tell the truth about what it is and let it be what it is as if it needs those things to be cool.. show the chrysler historical build sheet.. it was with the car and if its not not it can be gotten from FCA. I know this car well.

Neil was VERY helpful to my finding and completing most of the missing parts for this car as well as being a wealth of knowledge. I miss talking to him. I never intended to sell it but had a death in my family and had no intention of parking this car outside... and yes this car in its original and current form is beautiful. I was partial to the gold and black interior but that wasn't my choice. It's still beautiful the way it is.

    Lou, you should know the Coronet is the BASE Dodge, the ROYAL is mid level and
    CUSTOM ROYAL is the top trim level, and LANCER designates the hardtop.
    THIS is a CORONET, NOT a Custom Royal!

    I saw in another of Lou's videos that the push button transmission is supposed to be in neutral when parked. The only thing keeping it parked being the parking brake. Needs to be in neutral when started, not the other way around, but maybe they had it wrong in the other video. Or maybe it doesn't matter either way

      Hi Andrew, At 10:35 of the video of the interior, the vent window does not have a crank. The Vent window has a "clip" on the lower corner that you open that window by hand. So the "cranks" you see, are for the windows. Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou

    Ward Cleaver left June, took up smoking and wearing silk pajamas. His new Coronet attracted snappy women in European skirts who on occasion would ask for a pearl necklace. Yep, Ward is a changed man since leaving the Beav's mom ... To seek a variety of small furry friends.
