  • I just purchased a Stihl 391 Chainsaw with a 25 inch bar and chain. This is the biggest Farm and Ranch chainsaw Stihl has. To go better you have to buy a professional model of chainsaw. Today I am going to try it out for this first time. I am going to cut down 2 trees and cut them into firewood.

I am a stihl tech. the reason stihl only recommend a 20' bar with the 391 is the bar oiling system .I was told ,it will not adequately oil the longer bars. but i have seen many with longer bars . keep an eye on your bar and chain to make sure they are getting enough oil.

I run a 25 on mine, with the oiler set at the max setting, and it oils it just fine. Anything over 25 is where it becomes a risk.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

Love my 391, broke it in while cutting down an oak tree. Have had it for just under a year now, works great. Frequently did a muffler mod on the saw, pulls a 25” full comp chain like a champ (better than stock), definitely runs amazing with a 24” full skip chain as well.
It runs great with premium gas as well, recommend using it after break in.

I've had a ms441c for many years now and love it. Aside from the weight, which is offset by its performance it's an awesome saw. I use it for firewood and with an Alaskan mill. I use a 16 or 20" bar with my vertical Alaskan mill and the 20 or 28" bar with the horizontal mill. The 20" bar is my go to for firewood, but the 28" handles the larger stuff.

    • @ciphercode2298
      @ciphercode2298 ปีที่แล้ว

Bought me a ms250 to work in conjunction with my 441 and anything under 20" I just use the ms250. It's a fantastic light saw that actually cuts quite well,as long as you understand its limitations. I'm also working on an old ms310 that's sat for years and years. It needs the carburetor and hoses replaced and probably a new coil. Itd be an in between saw that I'll keep a 20" bar on for some mid sized wood or as a backup.

I love watching a new saw and sharp chain. Sometimes you wonder the way it rips through wood if that's the best day it's ever going to see. (until I finally got better at sharpening). WOW!!! what a price!! I was expecting 100 bucks more. Nice work on shopping around.

I run a 28inch bar with a skip tooth chain on it I have had it like that since the day I bought it never ever had an problems with this saw! Great medium weight saw I have a lot of saws this one was my first and it has never had any problems.

Those are great saws , I’ve got 3 of them. If you open the muffler a little bit it will run a 25” chain a lot better. I have 362 saws also but the 391 with muffler mods will blow the 362c away.

Once you get used to running a faster cutting saw ,you will use that saw more and more . With the longer bar you don't have to bend over to cut on the ground. That is also a plus . Congratulations sir

@Dave A I run a 24 " bar on mine and burn 22 inch logs . So I start at the right side of the log lay the saw sideways down the log and us the tip of the bar to score the bark. Then cut all the pieces and they are the same lenth

Good morning and a great video Evan and Rebecca. That saw is a great piece of equipment for your farm, read the break in instructions and see if you have to run it at full throttle a little while and then have to let it come to full throttle before touching the wood? The engine may be computerized and have to adjust itself? It will get better and you will get better at horsing it around so much 😉. The felling worked out great, good job. Thanks for sharing with us.

That certainly is a sweet looking saw . Nice Valentines Day gift for yourself . LOL .All engines need a break in period . The saw will get better in time . Even my diesel truck had a break in period . Couldn't go over 80 miles hr for 1000 miles . Then another 1000 miles pulling a trailer before I could pull my big 5th wheel . Break in period is important . So glad you got a longer chain . Was watching you hesitate there for a second and was thinking don't be lazy . Get the longer chain . Your truck will thank you for it .

Hey buddy.... It keeps dying because it needs carb adjustments for the cold weather. Also take off the air cover and there might be a cold air adjustment too. Look in your manual.
And try and refuse to pull the trigger all the way until it's broken in. 5-10 tanks have to run through it to be broken in.
    Arborist from Wisconsin. Great videos
Oh yeah ps. You'll love that 25"bar for bucking. Less bending over when you get good with it. :).

The 391 does have a cold weather setting. I believe the cold weather settings start at the 271.

LOL. My first thought was "oh no" when you talked about pulling on the tree with your truck. Glad you had enough chain to keep it a safe distance away.
I have a Stihl MS-271 Farm Boss with a 20" bar that I use for some of the larger trees on our property, and I have been very pleased with it. Even that smaller saw is a bit heavy to use for an extended period of time (for me). That saw that you purchased looks like a very nice one and should serve you well.
One other note, I hate bucking logs (cutting up into firewood logs) on the ground because my clumsy behind will always end up running the chain into the ground. You did a very good job.

But i like the 391.. we have a 25 on ours too. Ive used it now for five years. Ive replaced wear parts only. And a bar stud that got stripped .. all replaced by me in 10 mins or less. If its lived thru 5 years of abuse and use from us.. it will last you many more years.. i still use ours every day. Got a large live oak thats gotta be cut tomorrow. Im gonna square grind the chain, mod the muffler and let her rip

The saw should definitely run better after 6-7 tanks have been through it. Also make sure you're using at least 91, 93 octane, ethanol free would be best as you know. Before starting to cut the tree, pre-tension the line. Nice saw, thumbs up !

      Absolutely.
Find Premium Gas with NO ethanol.
You can ruin an engine fast.
The other thing is ALWAYS shake the heck out of your gas can before filling the saw, and shake the saw before starting.
This keeps water or and contaminants like ethanol from hitting the engine in one blast.

Run premium non-ethanol gas and you will get years of service out of that saw. I have a 250 Stihl I use to cut limbs and small trees and it sure saves the back. Enjoyed the clip son, god bless.

A new Stihl weedeater onetime and kept taking it back to the shop. The guy kept telling me to run only 89 to 92 Octane and it'll run fine. He was right. Another thing will help is mix your gas a little richer. Instead of using a whole gallon of gasoline fill your can about 8 tenth of a gallon. This works great for me.

Those are pretty good saws. I've got an ms 390 which is the previous model. You should have bought a pro model, theres night and day difference in ranch and pro saws.

@@noahranker4133 you get what you pay for. Buy once cry once is how I look at it. I've cut a lot of wood with my 390 and it's a good saw but for longevity the pro saw is the way to go.

@@jonathanfrecking1210 , a pro saw is nice but spendy and not needed most of the time. I've had both grades of saws they both work fine. As far as how long they last it all depends on how you take care of them.

clevis is right, because the pin is threaded. shackle is right if the pin is smooth and has a cotter pin,etc........g

    I’m a little jealous. I wish I had the 25” bar.
But as far as the 391 goes, I bought a used 390 several years ago, modded the muffler, pulled the plastic plugs in the carb to reset the fuel mix, got it running to 13,500 rpm.
The throttle response is much better, but still has a little lag.
But performance wise, the 39* line of chainsaws are as good as the 36* pro line chainsaws. The pro line is about $300 more, which is worth it for professionals using a saw 8 hours a day, but the 39* saws are beasts which perform like a pro saws, and give everybody, except perhaps professionals, exceptional performance for the life of the user.
    I love this saw!

New subscriber here. YT showed me this video. I'm trying to decide on whether to buy the Stihl 391 or an Echo 680. No one in my area carries a 391 with a 25" bar but I can order an Echo with a 27" bar for the same price as the 391 with a 20" bar. Plus the Echo 680 is a bigger saw. Thanks for the video. Look forward to watching more!

Buy can fuel for it. I use echo red armor fuel in my ms 271 and it runs so much better than mixing fuel yourself. I tried the stihl oil mix with eth free gas for a while..it ran like poop and lost power. The premix fuel it alot cleaner burning.

Nice big saw. When you need a big one it is great, but for small stuff use your old one. I have a large stihl and if you use it all day my arms and back hate me.

Looks like the 391 has plenty of power for that 25 inch bar and chain

Just got my MS 391 with 25" bar today. About that fuel and 'dogging' problem... as far as the 2023 models go, Stihl premix 0 Ethanol fuel is all it's designed to use. In fact, at the dealer today I was informed that using anything other than the specified fuel would void my warranty immediately. So, after the safety and operation training (apparently required in this State), I purchased 1 gallon (yes ONE gallon) for $42.43. Now about why I bought it in the first place... I had some pros come in and cut a historic water oak down in my back yard. The trunk 12" above ground level measures 9'10" across. Over 85 feet tall with 70 - 80 ft horizintals at 3'+ diameter. My job: make 5 years of fire wood. My prediction: Using the specified fuel and retaining my warranty will cost over $500.00 (not counting bar oil and lunches). Otherwise, it's the best saw I"ve ever owned/operated. It's fast, strong as all get out, and safe. I worked for a large tree company in the past so I've pretty much used everything. Good thing tho, nobody will want to borrow my saw if I tell them they have to furnish the fuel.

I just thought id give you this for general info. Echo has been the leader in all small hand tool warranty related items as they stand behind their product on a huge scale - 5 years on the engines/machines when purchased on a general consumer level. this has got to say something about their product, in fact I was told by the local distributor (not retail store but the actual local distributor supplier) that echo tests all the engine related equipment at a 200:1 fuel ratio for 100 hours. this has got to say something about their product. I've owned all my echo hand tools for over 10 years now which is used daily on a commercial level and have never had any problems other than minor things/wear & tear issues, the engines and machines have worked flawlessly for 8-10 years (I have purchased all my equipment over a 2 year period when I first bought everything) & I never once have had to use the warranty (in fact I have my equipment registered on the commercial level which is only a 2 year warranty and on that not its still a heck of a warranty considering my equipment it often abused on a commercial level - that being that they get ran daily). you may pay a bit more in cost but the old saying is you pay for what you get. to add to this I often think of replacing my old echo stuff with new echo machines but then I come to my senses and tell myself why - the stuff I got is working flawlessly, why should I replace something I don't need to - just to give you a idea on how reliable all the equipment I have is. (I have multiple items 4 -large 280 trimmers W/various multi attachments, 3 large backpack blowers, 3 smaller chipper/shredder vac/blowers, 2 hedge trimmers, 2 of each - small, medium & large chain saws - sorry I don't know all the model #'s, but each item has worked flawlessly for my company.) I own more than one of each piece of equipment for versatility purposes, I can keep equipment loaded on to trucks & trailers without having to remove them). www.echo-usa.com/Warranty/Consumer-Warranty

It’ll break in after 10-15 tanks. If it’s bogging like that from idle to a 3rd of the rpms you need to adjust your low speed set screw. Low speed supplys maybe 25-30% of the fuel required to run. Your high speed needle supply’s the other 70% plus fuel needed. If it’s bogging down already it’ll only get worse as the rings set. High speed set screw is from mid throttle to full throttle. The high speed adjustment is the one that if adjusted wrong it’ll burn up your piston and cylinder. Hope that helps.
