Cutting Uprooted Oak Tree into Firewood

- Today we are heading out I to the woods to cut up an oak tree that uprooted last fall. The tree was on the bank of our pond, and luckily fell away from the water. This is a decent sized tree and will provide a food amount of firewood.

The Stihl chain seems to be dull. It takes too long and produces dust.

If you are not taking advantage of the wood that's less than 4", you are leaving good, already downed wood behind.
Anything less than 4” in diameter is t worth the time it takes to harvest it and stack it.
It burns up too quick and doesn’t produce much heat
@Nick Price Takes less time to cut it than to split larger wood. And some of the wood is being split down to 4" anyway. 4" split wood produces the same heat as 4" non split. In fact, the branch portions of a tree often produce more btu's than the trunk.
@@shanebrewer530 ask anyone that uses a wood stove to heat their home or shop and I bet they all tell you the same thing. A 4” piece of split wood produces more heat and burns better than a 4” solid branch. Un split wood just doesn’t burn wel

Amount of time but are smaller (take longer to get big) and are therefore more dense
Need to take care of that back.

Great video, thank you for taking the extra time to set up the camera. I did think it would be much easier to just move those large branches than negotiating the buggy over them.
You did a good job with the oak tree and you have a good supply of firewood.

I use my Ohio Steel wagon the same way. It's a great tool.
That Fiskars makes quick work of those rounds. Nice looking wood lot.
Watch out of the up root trees. You start cutting off the weight and it can flip back up and you won’t see it coming
That’s a good idea to split it right there when they get to be heavy. I never thought of that .
That is the power of a log arch with balloon tires it can haul logs out of we swampy areas you would never want to bring equipment into using a winch to pull off other trees to get it to a spot you can hook up to it with a truck/tractor/atv to haul back to saw up or cut into rounds to split. Also no destroyed ground or mud in the bark of the tree from dragging it.

I've found wood is easier to split if the round is set to where the portion toward the top of the tree is on the top side.
I cut my own firewood, so I can use everything that will fit in my stove. LOL I drop the tree then get rid of the small stuff anything smaller than my thumb. then start at the top and cut everything bigger than my thumb into 16" lengths , I try to use as much of the tree as possible, as little waste as I can . I know this may take a little longer than some will want to take but I work by myself and only use it myself. I am 76 years old now and I like spending time in the woods doing something I enjoy, about 2 1/2 months a few 4 hour days a week and that get me about 6 cords.
Watching you do all that just wore me out LOL. Been there done that plenty. I do try to take my splitter to where the tree is if possible. That way when I cut it I can split it then haul it to a wood stack saving me from having to handle it as much. I realize that it's not always possible to do so. I just cut up and split a bunch more Oak and Hickory that will hopefully be ready next season.
I do know what 12 hour shifts are like for an extended period of time. I did that while I was in the Navy (which it's normal on a ship). I also did so in my civilian job after 9/11. It's not fun and is taxing. One key thing, at least for me was to eat well and stay hydrated.
On a final note, I hope you and your bride are doing well during this pandemic that we are going through. If I recall correctly she is a health professional. I do hope that she is able to have access to proper PPE. We will get through this and your videos are even more of a help to me being "quarantined" at the moment. I don't have the illness, but as a safety precaution we are supposed to do so. I just wonder how long I can take it before "cabin fever" kicks in.

I worked those 12 hour night shifts and they are not fun, but when I went back to 12 hour days, I liked it a lot better!

liked vid, If I may tell you look into some log tongs, got mine on amazon. (think mine are 8" & 12" They really help your back you're not bent over as far and can be used on bigger logs than you might think.

Evan, rounds look a little short. Are you cutting 16” for the fire place. Beautiful log would have been nice for lumber as well but great for firewood

Actually trying to chop up a downed oak tree and the chain I currently got isn't doing the job, would you tell me what type of chain you're using?
I would of grabbed biggest pieces 1st. Then move up the trunk. So by the end, as toredness hits,pieces are small and light

Great video as usual. Hows Rebecca doing at her job with all the coronavirus stuff going on? I'm a paramedic with my first kid on the way so it's a bit more nerve racking than if it was just myself! Hope you guys are staying safe. Be careful on the night shifts both of you. Do you plan on keeping up with videos with everything going on?
The world is changing fast. Rebekah is doing good, lots of shifts for her to pick up. We take it one day at a time. But I still hope to make a few videos while working nights.
Jkdubs2 have you considered home birth? It is safe, and would avoid having to subject your wife to a hospital and sick people, especially since you are a paramedic. Do the research, you may be surprised.

That wood isn't stacked up. It's piled up. I used to do that for my older neighbor. Once her husband died. My brother would cut and I would use wedges and sledge and split then stack rows.
One of the things I enjoyed the most doing... Now I have no land and I have to buy my firewood... Lame...😕

Nice stack of firewood you have there . 12 hr night shifts can be rough . I'd rather work a night shift than a day shift . I'm night person . I have worked many a night shift . LOL . If I wanted to do anything it would have to be first thing after got home . Once in bed I was done and there was no way I was going to get up early and do some work around the house . That's what days off are for . LOL

Bernie Delaney lots of high winds (60 mph ) can knock them down. Oaks have a wide but shallow root system.

Bernie Delaney in the Northeast, the European gypsy moth has been devastating especially for oak trees
Sometimes it's from storm damage. They don't fall but failed to recover. They also fall victim to invasive insects or diseases.

The stihl is a brand new saw. Third tree that I have cut up with it. May new to sharpen it for the first time.
@@CountryViewAcres should have been sharpened multiple times by the third tree..
It also depends on the chain. Usually you get an anti-kickback or low-kickback chain with a new Stihl saw. They don't cut as deep, which gives you smaller chips and dust.
@@karlrovey I disagree. Even a safety chain cuts better than that. He is really using the dogs for leverage.
