📢 I've just uploaded an update to this video with my new recommendations for a beginner car washing kit, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/7sj748OCnRs/w-d-xo.html
Great recommendations. Having detailed amateur and pro for 25 years, I recommend ditching 2BM! Instead use 1 bucket and 6 cheap noodle mitts per car. Use each side of each mitt just once, then discard to laundry pile. It is far safer than constantly rinsing mitts mid wash to reapply to car, it’s uses far less water, and also means carrying far less weight around. Back problems got me to this method, but time saving keeps me there. Great vid btw.
Wow - this was an excellent video, just what I needed. I've recently bought a new car and want to keep it in good shape, but found the variety of car products to be mesmerizing ...you scratched your brains and produced this honest, insightful and extremely helpful vid ... many thanks.
One thing to consider when choosing a pressure washer is the length of hose. B&Q have their own Karcher models which have shorter hoses to save them money. My K2 has a 3m pressure hose which means I constantly have to move the washer around. I'd say make sure you have at least 5m pressure hose or it'll drive you nuts.
I got a K2 with a 5m hose and even that is annoyingly short. I've ordered a 10m hose for around £20 so now it will be easy to go around a whole car without moving the washer
great video Heather, I love your honestly, and advice that you give. your channel is my favourite and always look forward to seeing your next one. keep up the great work
Thanks for a really helpful video. I've been thinking about starting a car valeting and detailing business for a while but wanted to start off part time while still employed so this basic kit list is really helpful. There so so many products out there and sometimes it's hard to know where to start. Thanks!
Thanks very much for watching 😊That’s a great idea, it’s very sensible to build it up whilst doing it part-time so all the best with it! Btw if you’re in the process of setting the business up atm and are looking for a website please feel free to get in touch. I only detail part-time and am a freelance web designer and have helped some detailers get set up with websites so just give me a shout if you need any help with that 😊
I had this happen recently. My friend bought a car, and wanted this to be the first one he didn't take to an auto wash. So he asked me which products he should start with. It was actually great fun to stand in front of my cabinets and try to pick one of each product for him.
Thank you for the video Heather. Sound and wise advice you gave. As you rightly pointed out, there's no point buying a whole host of stuff when starting out. Give it a few months though and I'm sure the person will bought countless products if they're hooked.
Cheers Karl! I completely agree. I think that the amount of products out there is so overwhelming that it makes it hard for people who are just getting into it to know what they want. It's definitely much easier to start with a small kit and then slowly start growing it if it becomes more of a hobby where the process makes up as much of the enjoyment as having a clean car!
Really well presented articulate and concise 👌. You managed to stick to the "essentials" message whereas most vids end up recommending dozens of products which just scares people off. Recently started using the GT Tyre Serum on your recommendation and it's a winner, many thanks.
Cheers Patrick! Yeah it's really good that GT have such a full range now I find myself reaching for a least a couple of their products on pretty much every wash
Good selection of products. Green star is a solid choice. You got it cheap. We have to pay around 17£ for a bottle, but its worth it! You can use almost everywhere.
Thanks for taking the time to produce this video, I took delivery of my MX-5 RF on Monday and have been watching a few of your videos for cleaning advice 👍😊
Looking for some advice please, l've just washed my car thoroughly for the first time and have noticed what appears to be water spots that I can't remove with standard cleaning products or polish. This is concerning because my car is only a few days old. I believe what has happened is that I rinsed it down with water and left it to dry, l didn't realise that this would be harmful to the paintwork. I live in Spain and on the two days l did this it was sunny. It's probably the worst thing l could have done. Is there a product that will safely remove water spots? Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you
Don't worry, they'll come off! I like using the Tac Systems Water Spot Remover spray for that if the water spots have been there for a little while. If you can't get that product in Spain then any dedicated water spot remover should be able to tackle them. I'd recommend washing the car first as normal and then drying it off with a microfiber towel. After that you can use the water spot remover and a fresh microfiber towel to wipe the surface and remove them
@@AutoCareHQ thanks for the advice, I was all prepared last night to use a solution of distilled white vinegar and distilled water 50/50 as the first step. I washed my car as usual in preparation and to my surprise and delight they had all disappeared! 😊 I have put two coats of Shine Armor quick coat on and was wondering if you could recommend a spray on ceramic coating with specific properties to protect against the strong Spanish sunshine
That's good news! I use the Garage Therapy Ceramic Sealant quite a lot as it offers very good durability, protection and gloss. It's a bit hard to find outside of the UK, but if you check a website called www.reincarnation-carcare.eu/ then they may ship to Spain :) I've got a couple of videos if you search on the channel as well if you want to see some more info about the product
Thank you for this video. I’ve just ordered myself a brand new car for first time and I am going to clean it solely myself and never go near a drive thru car wash machine
I loved this, just wanna get a budget solution , get all fronts covered, lots of detailing videos and beginner kits, they list 500$ of shopping list... Jesus... Thanks for this, you are awesome🎉
Very good starter kit Heather! The points you made in this video are very valuable for anyone who just starts out, but want to be wise how to spend their money and get great results. Wish I could see this video when I first got in to detailing, thus I could have saved myself from burning money with things that don't even worth a penny😅 Keep it up 🙌
Cheers Viktor :) I definitely found all the products very overwhelming when I first started getting into it! I was relatively sensible for the first couple of years and didn't have tonnes of stuff but now my addiction to detailing products has become quite uncontrollable and making this video reminded me of that 😂
Thankyou so much for this video all your tips and tricks are very much appreciated , you are changing the way I wash my car , the pre wash the several buckets to wash out the mit between Panels all of your advice is very much appreciated THANKS.
Just found your channel here today in Ireland.Got myself a power washer this weekend and autoglym shampoo, bucket and grit guard .I'm set for the morning job.
Cool videos! I use a microfibre wheel brush on a stick. Works great for a quick clean, then I just use a microfibre mit to get rid of any bits i've missed. The bristles on the other cheap armorall brush I got felt way too harsh. I've also started using the marolex axel foamer which makes the BH Autofoam nice and thick and dissolves the tough bits. Then I just get 2 buckets of turtle wax and that blue simoniz snow shampoo for the contact clean. Tyres i use the instant tyre dressing from autoglym or some random stuff in a can. 🙂
i got a really good deal on my k4 from the karcher outlet mine was only 97 pound plus the tenner for the extra 6 months warranty. doubt it will ever go that low again.
Cracking video Heather and it will be really helpful for those who want to up their game from a sponge and chamois regime. I agree with you about Sigma as a protection product, so easy to apply and such great results. It can work quite well as a stand alone as well if you keep it topped up.
Cheers Peter! It was really hard to pick just one protection product as you know I'm quite addicted to trying new ones 😂 Sigma is such as brilliant product though, I think it's a great all-rounder
@@AutoCareHQ I just applied Sigma V2 to my car today. Phenomenal product. Don't know if you have noticed Heather but I honestly think that it repels dust and dirt very well.
That's a really good point about it! Especially at this time of year when it can get a bit drier and dustier it does seem to keep the car looking cleaner for longer
Great advice 👍🏻 it’s crazy when you look back at what you start with! I’ve only been into it for about a year but I still cringe sometimes looking at some of the kit I used, it does make you appreciate the ‘higher end’ stuff you eventually buy though 😂
To be fair though no one gets into this and looks at something like an EZ wheel brush and thinks “yeah £20+ for a brush is reasonable”, so you naturally look for cheaper options at the start haha
Fantastic channel really easy to understand and follow advice very enjoyable but i would keep it super simple and use 1 bucket BUT use 3 or 4 noodle microfiber mitts and snow Foam onto dry paint rinse off then re snow foam shampoo the vehicle and then with fresh water and shampoo use your noodle mitts 1 for roof and windows 1 for bonnet and front grill and bumpers 1 for each side working from top to bottom and 1 for the boot tail gate and a couple for the wheels after brushing the wheels and start with the wheels
Great and very informative video , i had no idea how bad sponges can be for my car , which has Metallic paint , so i ve washed it couple of times tll now and noticing scratches around all corners so i was just desperate to see what i can do prevent this thanks again good one
Hi Heather another good watch and very informative I wish I had seen this when I started out as it would have saved me a fortune but I have tried a lot of products and had fun in the process. I agree with most of your choices. I bought Autobrite Direct Citrus 5L in one of their promotions very cheap and for general cleaning it is diluted 50 to 1 I think it will last years. Like a lot of things if you have money upfront and buy in bulk it saves money but you do need to know what to buy so these videos are really helpful. Thanks.
Great videos, I’m doing some things right but others not so much. I started using a local car wash a couple of years ago but now that it costs 7-10 pounds to get a car washed (probably badly), I might get off my @rse and invest in a couple of bits and bobs to do it better myself! I’ve tried cherry snow foam before with pressure washer, initially with a karcher snow foam lance but that was rubbish, so got a different one off eBay that was better. Was never that impressed with the snow foam though, or the pressure washer. Wasn’t convinced it did much, but maybe time to try again with the correct products.
Recently got started with handwashing my car since I just bought a new one - I use the pressure washer at my local DIY carwash, costs about 6 euro's each time I wash my car - 2 buckets with dirtguards and lids - microfiber washmits - microfiber cloths to dry the car after - Car shampoo & wax for the car - microfiber washmits with fingers (for the wheels) - Turtlewax wheel cleaner 110 euro's total
Nice video Heather. Probably harder to decide on which products to recommend out of many shelf fulls than to buy from scratch as a beginner! I know I'd find it difficult! 😄
Another superb video Heather, lots of top tips and advice, most of which I wish I had known before starting my obsession with buying detailing products 🤣I think you're right and you can't go wrong with having a predominantly Garage Therapy set up. Hope to see you at waxstock and thank you for your tips and advice 👍
Do you think you'd change anything you mentioned if you were to do it again now? E.g. with new products always coming along, maybe something might take the place of something you mentioned?
If you're using GS from KochChemie and you're happy with it, a very economical solution and practical for protection from the same brand is PW(protector wax) that can be used in a foam canon, you run rinse it and creates a hydrophobic protection.
Very good video and well explained. In relation to the foam applicator, I already had the Karcher K4 and recently purchased a foam applicator that attaches simply and gives great coverage. If you already have a K4 I would certainly recommend it. If you don't have a Karcher power washer then certainly the recommendation in this video would be a good alternative.
Great video, I like content like this as it highlights just how much marketing/snake oil there is thats capitalising on the detailing market. The reality is, you only need a handful of products to do everything. With that said, i'd probably replace KC Greenstar with Bilt Hamber Surfex HD, its the class leading APC and is cheaper I think. Id also replace your GT Sigma with Autoglym Aquawax/Express wax. More wideley available, cheap and easy to apply as a drying aid. Keep making awesome content!
Great informative video. I have started using a wash less cleaner, spray on buff off but was wondering if you would recommend doing the prewash stage before using it. Thanks for the great content.
Grest upload heather. definitely valuable information for new people looking to start detailing cars. personally i like my nilfisk each to there own i suppose 😁
I also recommend the Worx Hydroshot. One of the best things I ever bought. I use it to wash my articulated lorry. Saves so much time rinsing off the suds on a big truck.
Really great video, I'll be getting myself a starter kit using your list. What size buckets do you recommend as the link in the description just takes me to an eBay page with lots of options?
@@3DCineTech No problem :) Ideally it's best to have a grit guard for every bucket but at least get one for the rinse bucket. The next priority then would be the wheel bucket for me personally
I actually liked the idea with pump-spray, but how effective is it compare to thick snow foam you can normally see in videos? I’d love to try this method as the amount of foam is minimal and I can’t use too much foam when cleaning the car on my driveway as don’t want to create nuisance for my neighbours. Thanks for the video!
Great video Heather (Love the channel!). Was wondering....how do you store your towels/wash mitts? Are the wash mitts kept in your buckets, for example, or are they stored elsewhere.....? *Could be the subject of another video?! 😊
Thank you! I've just got a few plastic containers and a holdall that I keep them in. I also separate each type and put them in plastic bags but that's probably a bit over the top 😂
Another awesome video!! I’m always interested in seeing how other detailers approach things and the products they use. If money was no object, what you be your dream toolkit of products? Keep up the great work!! 😊
Thanks very much! Now that's a good question! My new Kranzle K10 TS actually arrived yesterday which I'm very excited about, but I'd also love to get a Rupes/ Flex polisher but just can't justify it as I don't do that much machine polishing. I'd love to have a garage at some point and have a really nice organised setup so that's definitely what I'd do if money was no object!
@@AutoCareHQ Very nice!! I’m looking forward to your Kranzle review very soon then, I’m looking to upgrade my K4 to a Kranzle, I just to need to justify spending the money!! I don’t do much machine polishing either, but highly recommend the Rupes Bigfoot, I bought the 21, but ended up changing the backing plate to the smaller one. A garage would be nice, do you do any mobile detailing, I noticed your videos are films at the same location, or would that be something you would like to do in the future?
@@mosesdetailing The Rupes Bigfoot looks brill, I'll have to seriously consider upgrading when I recover from the Kranzle purchase 😂 I'd definitely consider it in the future but I know it's very exhausting work! I don't do detailing professionally atm but I am considering it maybe in 2023/24
@@AutoCareHQ Bigfoot is the go-to polisher for sure!! Have you discovered this is an expensive hobby yet!! 😂 I agree, it’s a very exhausting job but also really rewarding, but I reckon you’d make a great mobile detailer!! I noticed in a lot of your videos you dilute your products down, how do you work these out? I’ve made an app if you’re interested in taking a look, it’s currently in testing as I’m making some changes, but let me know!!
I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos and youve inspired me to step up from my simple washing routine and have bought a few of the products you recommended. I have just took delivery of a brand new skoda Kodiaq in Meteor Grey and the colour begs to be kept nice and clean. I am looking forward to trying out my new products. Quick question on the sigma spray, would you recommend using this on alloy wheels to offer some protection against break dust etc or would you suggest any other product. Thanks anyway and keep you the brilliant work. (Thx also for the discount code for in2detailing! Very useful!)
Thanks for watching and congrats on your new car! Sigma can definitely be used on wheels but if you don't mind buying an extra product I'd go with a spray and rinse sealant instead because they really speed up the application and last a similar amount of time on the wheels. Some good ones to consider are Stjarnagloss Glatt and Gyeon Wet Coat :)
i need something you just get rid of the main thick dirt as ive cleaned before and there are dirty streaks everywhere, even when ive used a soapy sponge
Hi, thanks for the videos, really good! Getting prepped for a new (to me) car arriving, and your videos have gotten me interested in keeping it looking good. One question if you have time - with the GT TWO Sigma, can that be used on the alloy wheels as well as the body work, or is there something better for the wheels?
Thanks for watching and congrats on your new car! Sigma can be used on alloys but it usually only lasts a few weeks. Instead I'd recommend a spray and rinse sealant (something like Gyeon Wetcoat is a good choice) for the wheels as it's so quick to apply few weeks or so. You could always go for that on the paintwork too if you only want to get one product :)
@@AutoCareHQ Thanks so much for replying! I'll take a look at that product. Think I'll have to clear one of the garage shelves off to make way for all the new cleaning kit!
Excellent video Heather. I have been using Soft 99 Fusso for some time. I find that this is long lasting and and provides excellent beading. However, rain drops seem to sit forever on the paint and then dry to form 'water spots'. The Fusso also seems to attract dust so the car quickly looks dirty. I am thinking of trying a sealant like Menzerna Powerlock or the GT Sigma you recommend. I assume that the Sigma does not reduce the appearance of minor swirls in the paint? How does it perform in terms of keeping the paint 'clean'?
Cheers Steve! I found that issue as well when I used to use the old version of Fusso. Sigma is definitely a slicker product which I've noticed helps to keep the panels cleaner between washes. I don't think it has much filling capability unfortunately, however GT are releasing a new wax very soon which does more in that respect. I've been testing their development version of the wax and it's really impressive. Great durability and water behaviour and the darkening effect it has is unreal. Could be worth hanging on for that if you wanted to try another wax!
Hi Heather - some good points here but would disagree regarding the microfibre products for contact washing. I have a ceramic-coated PPF car and use rinseless wash products like ONR for routine maintenance washes - there are a couple of specialized sponges that are designed and ideal to use with rinseless washes and I can say for this type of wash i wouldn't use anything else - a far better product than microfibre mitts.
Do you use the same rinse bucket for both the car and wheels? If so, would that rinse water contaminate the wash bucket used for the car (if you wash the wheels first, then car)?
Nope I keep the rinse bucket for paint only. I jet wash my wheel brushes/ mitt after each wheel to stop the wheel bucket getting dirty so I don’t need to use an extra rinse bucket for the wheels
Hi just found you…. I'm looking to start of detailing. I have a big budget so what do you recommendme getting starting from power washer, to tools to chemicals.. Thank You
If you have a look at this area on my website it has links to all my favourite chemicals, accessories, equipment etc. 😊 autocarehq.com/recommended-products/
Great video Heather! I definitely recommend Gyeon Wetcoat. Spray on rinse off protection. Brilliant long lasting . Green Star is definitely my go to at 1:4 ratio on the paint as a prewash and on wheel wells assisted by Brake Buster.
Cheers Jeffrey! I'm a big fan of wetcoat, it was probably one of the first "detailing" products I bought actually! I really like spray and rinse products for wheels especially, it's so much easier than using a wax/ sealant
One BIG mistake. You didn't show your beautiful Soul Red Crystal MX-5 RF in full at the end! Seriously though, great advice and lovely car! (I have the Machine Grey version and the advice you give is spot on!)
Well thought out starter kit👍🏼 When you think about Green Star or other good APCs does make you wonder why we bother with so many dedicated products doesn’t it 😅
One thing you can't have is to many car detailing products. I started dabbling about 10 months ago when I got my new MX5 and I've been slowly building up my collection

I’ve only been into it for about a year but I still cringe sometimes looking at some of the kit I used, it does make you appreciate the ‘higher end’ stuff you eventually buy though 😂
Cheers Craig! I used some right rubbish on my first car when I was getting started as well 😂
To be fair though no one gets into this and looks at something like an EZ wheel brush and thinks “yeah £20+ for a brush is reasonable”, so you naturally look for cheaper options at the start haha
I wanted to see how to clean a car… but I fell in love 😍😍😍.
Thanks.
Cheers John! That's a very good point, 5 litre bottles end up saving you loads of money in the long run
My new favorite channel by far.
Thanks very much!
Recently got started with handwashing my car since I just bought a new one
- I use the pressure washer at my local DIY carwash, costs about 6 euro's each time I wash my car
- 2 buckets with dirtguards and lids
- microfiber washmits
- microfiber cloths to dry the car after
- Car shampoo & wax for the car
- microfiber washmits with fingers (for the wheels)
- Turtlewax wheel cleaner
110 euro's total
Nice video Heather. Probably harder to decide on which products to recommend out of many shelf fulls than to buy from scratch as a beginner! I know I'd find it difficult! 😄
Cheers Steve! That's very true!
Another great video! I don't think I can disagree with any of your recommendations. I am also a massive fan of Garage Therapy. Love your content!
Thanks very much Christopher!
Can you please show what spray gun nozzle connection you use with the karcher?
Another superb video Heather, lots of top tips and advice, most of which I wish I had known before starting my obsession with buying detailing products 🤣I think you're right and you can't go wrong with having a predominantly Garage Therapy set up.
Hope to see you at waxstock and thank you for your tips and advice 👍
Thanks very much Paul!
Use fairy liquid, good for all areas of the car and the best part is you can dilute it and drink it in the summer when you get thirsty.
How long time you need to do a completely washing treatment on one car?
Hello Heather don’t forget the safety glasses 😎
Hello from Australia Heather ;) Great video as always and a nice choice of products to use for the results people are looking for..
Thanks for the support!
Do you think you'd change anything you mentioned if you were to do it again now? E.g. with new products always coming along, maybe something might take the place of something you mentioned?
Great video.
Brilliant video .. well thought out and excellent presentation .. just awesome... thank u.
Thanks very much!
Very informative, thank you. And clearly explained.
Excellent video! I have to check out this Garage Therapy brand. Hope I can get it here in Australia.
Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks Nick! I'm not sure if GT have made their way over to Australia yet but it's worth having a look, their range is really impressive!
Informative video with good explanations. Refreshing to see someone simplify the car cleaning process for beginners
Thanks very much!
If you're using GS from KochChemie and you're happy with it, a very economical solution and practical for protection from the same brand is PW(protector wax) that can be used in a foam canon, you run rinse it and creates a hydrophobic protection.
Another brilliant video... is there a difference though between Garage Therapy/TWO Sigma and Garage Therapy/TWO Quick Detailer 🤔
No worries, I've found out via your previous videos. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks for watching! I'm still yet to try the QD actually but I have heard some very good stuff about it
Very good video and well explained.
Another great video
Thank you!
Grest upload heather. definitely valuable information for new people looking to start detailing cars. personally i like my nilfisk each to there own i suppose 😁
Thank you! The nilfisk machines look really good
Really refreshing to watch a girl detail a car, great job.😊
for those in flats, the worx hydroshot does a commendable impression of a power washer
I also recommend the Worx Hydroshot. One of the best things I ever bought.
I use it to wash my articulated lorry. Saves so much time rinsing off the suds on a big truck.
Tu es un trésor merci de partager ta précieuse expérience 😉👍
Thanks Heather, good video
Really great video, I'll be getting myself a starter kit using your list. What size buckets do you recommend as the link in the description just takes me to an eBay page with lots of options?
Thank you! Ahh apologies for that, the listing must have ended. I go for 20 litre buckets
Thank you 😁 Would you recommend getting a grit guard for every bucket or just the rinse bucket?
@@3DCineTech No problem :) Ideally it's best to have a grit guard for every bucket but at least get one for the rinse bucket. The next priority then would be the wheel bucket for me personally
@@AutoCareHQ Thank you so much for getting back to me, hope you're having a great day 😁
Great video. Thanks and keep up the good work :)
Girl, for us detailing maniacs, you are wifey material! ❤ Keep up the good work! Love your channel
Creep detected and sexist🤦🏿♀️
Excellent. Thanks
Brilliant vid. Thank you
Great vid 👍
I actually liked the idea with pump-spray, but how effective is it compare to thick snow foam you can normally see in videos? I’d love to try this method as the amount of foam is minimal and I can’t use too much foam when cleaning the car on my driveway as don’t want to create nuisance for my neighbours.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! If you have a search for “auto foam” or “pump sprayer” on my channel you should find my comparison video
Thanks!
Great video thanks!
Excellent again 👏
Thanks John!
Hello, do you detail the interiors with diluted or concentrated chemicals?
Another good video Heather, for easy of use plus it works great then it Gyeon wetcoat 👍👍
Cheers Richard! Agreed, wetcoat is brill
@@AutoCareHQ Thankyou for getting back to me. I will have a look into your recommendations. Keep up the great videos! 👍🏻👏🏻
i need something you just get rid of the main thick dirt as ive cleaned before and there are dirty streaks everywhere, even when ive used a soapy sponge
Hi, what’s the Karcher outlet?
What size are those buckets please?
TAC Systems. Gyeon, Bilt Hamber, Bouncers are the best brands with Menzerna for polishes and Rupes machines, scangrip for lighting
Also garage therapy are good the decon shampoo is brilliant for dirty vehicles.
Thanks Heather. Will give the GT wax a try when it is released.
@@AutoCareHQ ahhhh ok.
Thx for your reply!
What's the best TFR/Car Shampoo you've tried, and what is the best Iron and Fallout remover for the paintwork you've tried?
Pressure washer is the essential kit. The battery type dont work as well, but do in a pinch
Hi just found you…. I'm looking to start of detailing. I have a big budget so what do you recommendme getting starting from power washer, to tools to chemicals.. Thank
You
If you have a look at this area on my website it has links to all my favourite chemicals, accessories, equipment etc. 😊

Haha thanks very much! The machine grey version looks amazing, great choice!
hi heather how often do you wash your drying towel and is it just a question of popping it in the machine ?
I wash it every time I use it just in the washing machine on a 30 degree wash with a non-bio pod and without any fabric conditioner :)
Great video 👍🏻
Thank you!
Well thought out starter kit👍🏼
When you think about Green Star or other good APCs does make you wonder why we bother with so many dedicated products doesn’t it 😅
Cheers Nick! Haha you've got a good point 😂
One thing you can't have is to many car detailing products. I started dabbling about 10 months ago when I got my new MX5 and I've been slowly building up my collection
