    This Cuphead documentary details the development of indie 2D platformer Cuphead and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover more about developer Studio MDHR and its two founders, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. Growing up as brothers, Jared and Chad loved watching cartoons from the 30s and playing run-and-gun video games such as Mega Man, Contra and Gunstar Heroes. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Studio MDHR made and shows how the 1930s cartoon style started as a joke.
    It also takes a close look at all the hurdles the team had to go through. The two brothers and other members of the team had no prior development experience before working on Cuphead so the learning curve was steep. Additionally, the studio decided to stick as closely as possible to the traditional techniques of early animation, meaning drawing every single frame of animation by hand. This unfortunately slowed down production by 80%. Furthermore, the team went through more than 150 designs for the titular character Cuphead before they landed on the right one. Lastly, Jared and Chad share some advice for aspiring indie developers and talk about what’s next for Studio MDHR.

      Ambitious and incredibly risky. A lot of indie games have struck gold by hitting the ground running coming out at the right place at the right time. Unfortunately if AAA devs are even small enough to be in a position to make their own creative games, the publishing corporations tend to be the ones that kill off or stall fledgling franchises. My favorite AAA game series have been from early studios that put their all into an experimental game before it deviates from its core gameplay to chase trends (Battlefront/Battlefield series), changes enough to become a casual formula (Far Cry series), dies as a trilogy (Crysis series), or worse is stuck in limbo before it gets there (Half Life series, Deus Ex (Edios) series, Titanfall series).

    19:18 I’m extremely happy that you are one of the first people to actually mention this in a video. People who don’t actually know much about classic cartoons or jazz music claim that Cuphead’s soundtrack was accurate to the music that were featured in similar cartoons and simply label Big Band as “jazz” but that’s just not the case. As good as the soundtrack is and although they do use ragtime as their choice of music for run n’ gun levels which MIGHT be used in rubber hose cartoons, Big band is often not the type of music that you will hear. If anything it was more of blues, classic jazz, and orchestral scores were used. I know this isn’t necessarily an addition to what you said but I just wanted to point out that I’m glad someone felt the need to add that bit of information

    • @demianrusso9439
      @demianrusso9439 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      for the most part, yes, this is true, but you also have to take into account that when people make statements like that, they're likely referring to music of that era rather than music specifically tied to old rubber hose cartoons and such. and most gamers i know aren't really aficionados on old music either

While Cuphead wasn't the *only* thing that made me go "yeah I wanna be an animator when I grow up," still to this day every time I play it, it takes me back to that time me and my older brother started up the game only to be shown a beautifully animated intro with a lovely song, just watching in awe. The creation of Cuphead is very inspiring to me. I've been wanting to make a game for a while now, based on a combination of random things like Dungeons and Dragons and some MMORPGs like Runescape and semi-inspired by VRChat. I essentially want to make a fantasy world that's customizable to the player and gives the ability to make it whatever you want. I'd feel uncomfortable marketing it to children, being that having a lot of freedom can have its bad impacts, so I'd probably give it a T or M rating, but I've never felt like I've had the level of freedom I wanted in an MMO before and I want to make that possible for myself and many other people. Seeing how this game was created by just a few people as their passion project after having little to no experience in the industry, I think it's something I'll be capable of in the future. I'm currently 17 and am studying some things like Art and Blender. I will also learn Unity in the future and hopefully get a paid version of the program at some point. So hopefully my project will go the way I want it to.

    I remember watching the first trailers and gameplays back in 2014 and became obsessed with it. Searched the web for every bit of information I could find. I doubted that the gameplay would be any good, I even doubted it would ever come out, but I'd already decided I desperately wanted it. I also grew up watching old cartoon shorts by Disney, Warner, Universal and MGM on VHS tapes and Cuphead looked so authentic it was hard to wrap my head around. It came out much better than I hoped, and yeah it was hard. Sometimes it took me 20 or 30 attempts to beat a boss, but who cares, look at that art. It's jaw-dropping. My only problem with it as that it's always been hard to find co-op partners because the difficulty intimidates people.

    This kind of reminds me of how the game Hades was originally going to star Theseus and the roguelike maze elements were going to be about the maze of Minos, but were having a really hard time working with the character and felt the maze itself didn't really fit their vision of the narrative storytelling continuing to flesh out with each run. After some more research on greek myths, they ended up becoming interested in the character Hades, as he was very often underrepresented due to the other gods fearing and generally ignoring him. This also led to the idea of changing a story about escaping a maze into one of Hades' only child escaping a dysfunctional family through the notoriously terrifying gauntlet that is the underworld. They even threw a deceased Theseus in Elysium, aided by the Minotaur who was slain by him in life, now having nothing but respect now for the dead hero for rescuing from Erebus where he was cast after death for being a monster. Great game, I fucking love it.

    Cuphead fulfills the role of balance within challenge in games. It's true, most people nowadays complain about how a game is difficult, but there are some who can't differ between a plain hard game to a hard and fair game.
    Hard and challenging games fulfill the role of accomplishment when finishing the game entirely, but a hard and challenging game needs a crucial requirement, and it's called making it fair. Cuphead is hard, but it's definitely not impossible and it definitely needs some time to finish.

The fact that they later enlisted spouses, family members, and childhood friends to their team to do the same is mind-blowing. What a solid group of people.

      This really is the truth though! It was Glen's video on Stardew Valley (one of my favorite games of all time) where I learned that it was created by just Eric Barone alone. That revelation has sat in the back of my head for months now and is ultimately what gave me the inspiration to get started on the next stage of my artistic career. Just earlier today, I purchased a few courses in C#/Unity and got a sub to a coding site. I don't know where this will take me but if it takes me somewhere good... it will owe a great debt to that video.

    • @noah.2B
      @noah.2B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meerdeadpool I knew Eric Barone's development of SDV was a solo affair, but learning what that was really like definitely inspired me more.
      I wish you good luck on your journey.
      I know for me, I need a bit more direction and grounding in what I'm doing than just programming courses, so I would say not to get discouraged if you don't find yourself loving them.
      I find the tiny bit of programming/scripting you'll do just to get something to work in Unity to be vastly more educational than hours of lectures I had to sit through in college.

    6 million copies sold in 2020
    times $15 per sale average
    minus 30% platform fees
    is $63 million
    With between 3 and 20 workers from 2013 til 2020. Assuming most of those people were added in 2016 and 2017 comes out to ~75 worker years from 2013 to 2020?
    That's around $800k per year of labor before taxes.
    That's definitely respectable income. But I hope their next game takes less time and sells better because for the crazy risks they took that's not the greatest return on investment. (Though I didn't really account for merchandise sales, hopefully that's put them in F U money territory)
