Hollow Knight really made me feel a sort of happiness and intrigue for a game that I've never felt before. Not only did it hook me with the art (being an artist myself, I was kinda blown away with the detail and love that you could see was put into it. And I LOVE 2D art with a PASSION), the music, the game play, and the characters, but it made me feel so excited to do EVERYTHING the game had to offer. A $60 game cannot give you the same amount of fun that Hollow Knight does. Even though I had to look up a guide for a lot of this game, it’s still so much fun. I can’t wait until Silksong comes out.
After all the free dlc updates are counted the game is around a 30 hour experience for 15 dollars with practically almost no filler. Massive respect for them charging such a low price because that allowed more people to end up being able to experience it

Not only have they said again and again that they aren't in it for the money, but they're almost guaranteed to sell millions of copies, just like with the original Hollow Knight. $15 times three million is a lot of money. $15 however is not, which is nice seeing as I am broke. In addition, the low price of the first game was one of the biggest draws. "If you have any doubts about whether or not you'll like this masterpiece, just buy it. Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I'm awestruck at the story of their humble beginnings - I work in web development but I'm considering switching to building games and this gives me so many ideas on how to get started. Thanks!
The art style of Hollow Knight is so impressive to me. It’s good that they had an animator handle the majority of the character designs. If an opportunity came around to create an indie game if and when I become a traditional animator, that’d be really awesome. I have so many ideas!!!😊
It's very interesting how they utilized almost every one of their design sketches in Hollow Knight... imagine if other game companies used the ideas and concepts they sketched in development, instead of making a bunch, choosing the best, and leaving behind the rest. There's so much potential in every sketch, and while I understand choosing the best options, there's so much more they could do with those ideas rather than scrapping them!
This was a greatly made video. Taking us through their journey, their comments on the game dev process, showing earlier videos, arts, music, dialogues, motives and scratched out plans etc. all makes us feel even closer to the studio and it's people. Also in a way that attracts more players to play the game without giving them spoilers. Great job Glen! And hats off to Team Cherry for keeping on believing and finally producing such a marvel of a game! Truly an amazing and inspiring journey.
I only started playing HollowKnight in May of 2021 and what an absolute treasure of a game it is. It feels so special and I'm proud of our Aussie devs for kicking ass on the global gaming front. One of my all time favourite games now.
It’s evident that you’ve spent a lot of effort and energy on this video and it can be seen in your other videos. The quality is incredible and when you point out your errors is always appreciated! Keep up the good work ;)
Wow, the thing that impresses me the most is how efficient this team seems. Really crazy what they were able to make with what they had. I love Metroid and Castlevania but Hollow Knight just wasn't very fun for me however, I get the love so many people have for it. Great video.
great video! i still haven't beaten the game yet because i'm a perfectionist and i want to get the monarch wings before i continue. i think i have lost to that mini boss over a hundred times now. all in all, hallow knight has become my favorite platformer of all time and has actually inspired me into beginning to learn game development. this video is a treasure to the internet and sir, i thank you for your efforts.
William Pellen's concern over the movement and combat was on point. It made all the difference in the world. A lot of triple A developers could learn a thing or two from him.
With the gaming industry being all........ saturated with the same formula and ideas , Hollow knight was a cake on a silver, heck gold platter. I spent hours piecing together the lore playing the game. Play it and it will not disappoint u. @ThatGuyGlen man just props to u. Thanks to u guys we know who to direct our gratitude to. Thanks man.
To be fair I don't think hollow knight brings any new or interesting ideas to the table it's just that it puts together the best parts of its predecessors

Thank you, glad you’re enjoying the videos! Yeah, people seem to really enjoy that aspect of the videos and it’s a blast putting them together like that :D
damn this is probably the most OP developer team. everyone is extremely talented. imagine making a game with only 4 people that studios with hundreds of members could not.
6:00 every battle mistake I make in this game I can only blame it on myself, its one of the many things i love about hollow knight and I never knew it was so deliberate
Man this development process was very straightforward. the devs even communicated their process. I wonder what happened in Silksong. It seems so different from before. Something terrible must have happened. Why 5 years radio silence when hollow knight was developed like this?
I hear just a few notes of the soundtrack and I get goosebumps instantly. One of the best games I've ever played, despite all the bugs! (Sorry :) Great video too!
Congrats on this video! It made me appreciate this game even more!!! I got this game as a gift on my birthday this year... and I'm obsessed. I love video games but I have never been too skilled, yet this game it's difficult but leaves the door open for you to improve easily and beat it. I think I hadn't spend more than 30 minutes in a boss. I lose but the bosses gives you enough time to heal, and hit and that helps you feel you can do it and go back every time. It's a challenge you know you can win, but you need to keep trying.
If it was then many people would have never been able to experience it. It shows you the developers main goal wasn't about making money like most gaming publishers. It was about their game being successful and as many people as possible being able to enjoy it so they could keep making more games
I always wondered about this game and keep mixing it up with Shovel Knight because of the titles. I think I'll consider this for my switch. And great video as always!!
Thank you! I play it on the Switch and it’s such a beautiful (and challenging) game. I would definitely recommend it if you don’t mind a more difficult game.
O wow very nice recommended video. and very well made , i love the way you pack the content into 1 of many high quality content you crafted , you deserve more subs and views man very wish ya a good luck growing the channel out
Amazing video my dude! I am very much considering buying this game on the Nintendo Switch, it seems like a great game on a handheld! (or I might wait for the sequel, we'll see haha) Also - your animation and narration is great, as always!
I'm playing it on my switch and it's totally worth it. I actually regret not buying the physical copy which came with a bunch of stuff. I just have the digital game.
I’m 23 almost 24 and can confirm hollow knight has made me rage like a 12 year old kid again. Almost cried once and find myself wondering why do I not feel over powered yet I’m so far in. But still a good game the satisfaction of beating a boss or complex platforming section feels amazing after being so emotional down after trying for so long. It’s almost like a drug!
I rewatch this video from time to time as I wish to become an indie game dev one day after I graduate, wholesome and inspirational, stories like this prove that video games are an ascended art form and the makers are artist in the truest form
Most incredible thing is the speed, they showed that speed in prototyping ideas quickly easily trumps long design documents that try to over-engineer concepts on paper before even trying them out in the engine

and then made the most rage inducing game i have ever seen
Other games: *pay 76,99$ to play and pay more 20$ to get 1 of 6 dlc's 😢
Team cherry: free dlc's and base game only for 15$, my brother 🗿
Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I'm awestruck at the story of their humble beginnings - I work in web development but I'm considering switching to building games and this gives me so many ideas on how to get started. Thanks!
My pleasure, glad it was helpful!
Who else is excited for Silk Song?
me
The art style of Hollow Knight is so impressive to me.
There's so much potential in every sketch, and while I understand choosing the best options, there's so much more they could do with those ideas rather than scrapping them!
that cut bone area looks very similar to an area we have seen in silksong, they couldn't let it go
There's a lot to like about this game, so learning the history is a real treat!
Glad you liked it!
It's awesome seeing more developers from Australia being able to make great games like this. I'm honestly surprised the industry there isn't bigger
I am so glad that this game is growing, I have been playing since the start and bought every single product they have ever released to support them
great video! i still haven't beaten the game yet because i'm a perfectionist and i want to get the monarch wings before i continue. i think i have lost to that mini boss over a hundred times now. all in all, hallow knight has become my favorite platformer of all time and has actually inspired me into beginning to learn game development. this video is a treasure to the internet and sir, i thank you for your efforts.
William Pellen's concern over the movement and combat was on point. It made all the difference in the world. A lot of triple A developers could learn a thing or two from him.
I absolutely love how deep hollow knight is as a game and a story
With the gaming industry being all........ saturated with the same formula and ideas , Hollow knight was a cake on a silver, heck gold platter. I spent hours piecing together the lore playing the game. Play it and it will not disappoint u.
@ThatGuyGlen man just props to u. Thanks to u guys we know who to direct our gratitude to. Thanks man.
Much appreciated, glad you enjoyed it! Indie games are full of gems. They’re just so refreshing after playing a big budget game.
To be fair I don't think hollow knight brings any new or interesting ideas to the table it's just that it puts together the best parts of its predecessors
How are your videos so well made?!!
I absolutely love these video essays, please do keep it up, I have been binge watching all of them
One of the greatest games I've ever played. It is absolutely amazing. Very cool to see how it was all built.
I have seen so many hollow knight videos lately, I think I'm gonna have to buy it... again.
Really well made video. I love Hollow Knight and I hope Team Cherry is able to live their dream for many years to come :)
Much appreciated!
Man that was one of the best informative videos i saw on youtube, you kept my interst so high thank you!
Much appreciated, thank you for taking the time to watch it!
I love your Channel. Thank you so much for putting these together, As a game designer on my own journey watching these stories is nothing short of inspiring. Keep it up!
My pleasure, thank you for the support! It always makes me happy to hear when they serve as an inspiration. I’m trying to lean more into that for future videos by looking for he most inspiring development stories I can find. I think you’ll like the next one :D
I sure hope the Boneforest will be in Silksong. That sounds cool...
Kinda confirmed. They have a lava area that either used the boneforest as a reference or the boneforest is some part of it.
Congratulations, it will be!
This video was one of the reasons I got Hollow Knight and it is a great video explaining the history of it. Thank You.
Also I hope your next video is good.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! I hope so too, it's almost ready to be released :D
Great video! You have an amazing editing style, I sense you're going to blow up on youtube in no time. Keep up the great content!
Thank you, will definitely do! Can’t wait to share the next video :D
I'm glad that TH-cam recommended this video to me. I watched a few others of your videos, and I really like them. I love that the "style" of the video is adapted to the game, with the fonts and all.
Honestly really surprised to see only 25k subscribers, but i think your channel will grow pretty quickly.
Thank you, glad you’re enjoying the videos! Yeah, people seem to really enjoy that aspect of the videos and it’s a blast putting them together like that :D
These two dudes are frickin geniuses. I've bought hollow knight on switch and pc because its that good. Can't wait for silksong.
The three downvotes were australians, thinking it was the upvote, i loved the vid, it was very well done! Keep up the good work
Thank you! More videos are coming :D
Team cherry is composed of three Australians lmao
damn this is probably the most OP developer team. everyone is extremely talented. imagine making a game with only 4 people that studios with hundreds of members could not.
more people doesnt improve the game development process
@@sugaristhenewwhite yeah. tell that to the last of us 1 and the last of us 2.
give this man a million subs
6:00 every battle mistake I make in this game I can only blame it on myself, its one of the many things i love about hollow knight and I never knew it was so deliberate
Man this development process was very straightforward. the devs even communicated their process.
I wonder what happened in Silksong. It seems so different from before. Something terrible must have happened. Why 5 years radio silence when hollow knight was developed like this?
Well 5 years of radio silence is kinda wrong, we heard from them this February in fact
17:42 im glad they decided to keep that idea and put it into silskong
14:01 No way! A metroidvania game was inspired by Metroid and Castlevania!!??!!?
Great video. You kept the atmosphere of the game in the video, and provided great info on the development of Hollow Knight. Thanks :)
Much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to watch it!
Wow just found you channel!
Your voice is super smooth and your videos are very nicely narrated and very informative !
Keep up the good work man!
Thank you very much! More videos are coming :D
Great video! Really informational and well edited. Easy to follow along with the text on screen. Looking forward for more.
Thank you! More is definitely coming :D
Thank you, glad you liked it!
This game should literally cost $60-$70
It is worth that much at least
If it was then many people would have never been able to experience it. It shows you the developers main goal wasn't about making money like most gaming publishers. It was about their game being successful and as many people as possible being able to enjoy it so they could keep making more games
Also basically only people from a few countries would buy it beacuse of different curriences that make the price 5x higher
Awesome job! I love consuming anything HK related and am always intrigued about the people who make my favorite games. Can’t wait for Silksong
Thank you!
My brain is having a hard time accepting that the first draft of the character is basically the final draft
i find it hard to believe that Hungry Knight was a thing :D
I love the background music, brings back so many memories
"Game Jams are an excellent way for developers to flex their skillz"
No better way to describe them 😂
The soundtrack you included with this video is really good. I especially love the music at 2:35. Thank you for your hard work 😀
The music is from Hollow Knight that he used. It's hands down one of my favorite gaming ost's
I'm just patiently waiting for Silksong by devouring everything there is on Hollow Knight.
“The old version of the game would take 2~3 hours long”
Me, looks at my 170+ hours: ...........
Still worth it! :D
i have 49 hours ingame and i got the game 2 weeks ago.
Try 230 hours
But really if u dont count me messing around
Then it took me 218 hours to get 112%
Im have put 21 hour into this game I still don't know if I'm near end of the game
I'm in part of the game where forgotten crossroads got change
@@basilplushie2534 so that means you killed your first dreamer, that means your in the very, very early part of late game
@@curseofbinding dude I already beat the game
O wow very nice recommended video. and very well made , i love the way you pack the content into 1 of many high quality content you crafted , you deserve more subs and views man very wish ya a good luck growing the channel out
Thank you very much!
They bamboozeld us so hard with sliksong trailer.
?
?
?
I think he just means that we were caught off guard by the trailer.
@@marionic6600 oh ok
The success story of Hollow Knight is such an inspiration to me
I hope I can be like them someday
Just don't give up. You can never know of something unless you try first. It's better to have tried than left wondering what could have been
Ay another video ! And its about Hollow Knight ! This is gonna be awesome.
Hope you liked it!
this was a great documentary!! your research shows
Thank you!
Amazing video my dude! I am very much considering buying this game on the Nintendo Switch, it seems like a great game on a handheld! (or I might wait for the sequel, we'll see haha)
Also - your animation and narration is great, as always!
I'm playing it on my switch and it's totally worth it. I actually regret not buying the physical copy which came with a bunch of stuff. I just have the digital game.
Thanks man! I’ve honestly only played it on my Switch in handheld mode, it feels so perfect on a smaller screen.
Just buy it! I think playing it in handheld is actually easier, you’re able to take in all that’s happening on the smaller screen.
Don't wait. You're missing am amazing experience.
Don't just wait for the sequel, the characters, gameplay, and world will be completely different so you should play both.
Absolutely! I hope you follow your passion and succeed...
Most incredible thing is the speed, they showed that speed in prototyping ideas quickly easily trumps long design documents that try to over-engineer concepts on paper before even trying them out in the engine
Wow this game has a lot of history! Hollow knight has always seemed interesting to me, I love metriodvanias but I havnt gotten the chance to play it. Now this intrigued me and i think I will buy the game!
Hope you enjoy the game! :D
@@ThatGuyGlen thanks :)
I didn't care much for metroidvanias until I played Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest. Those made me fall in love with the genre
A very well made video, good job! Also Silksong is one of the few games I will preorder. Imagine if silksong is 15 bucks again.
Thank you!
Love Team Cherry so much
I wish they have more money to make advertisement, so many people will know this masterpiece game.
I will help spreading this game in my friends, even my country
its astounding how such a small team managed to create such a masterpiece, I love this game
I have never played this game, but you made me want to so thank you! Your channel is great 👍😊
Much appreciated! :D I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy more challenging platformers.
the hungry knight is a seperate lil bug guy, it wears a grey cloak while the hollow knight (player who's truly hollow) wears a purplish grey,
"Silksong on the horizon"
💀💀💀
They they created this game feels flowy and serendipitous from start to finish. Even playing the game feels organic, it just flows.
