Tatsu is a modern day Akira Toriyama. In terms of making stuff up as the story goes along, but finding a way to make everything come full circle, at least.
Funny enough just like the late Toriyama. He also puts blatant ultraman references into the show. Just like how kid bulma's outfit can shoot lasers out of the gem on her forehead and the head crest detaches and becomes a bladed projectile (referencing Ultraseven's emerium beam and eye slugger) And the entire capsule corporation's gimmick being a big reference to Ultraseven's capsule kaiju (fun fact. Seven's capsule kaiju is what inspired pocket monsters a.k.a. pokemon)
Is not exactly that he mades stuff up, he picks elements that already exist from all over the place: Ultraman, Japanese folklore, OOPArts, Kaiju, aliens, Minecraft(yes, minecraft), etc and blends them into a very cohesive, hot and tasty soup. Which is impressive in its own right, he is kinda inserting the square peg in the triangle hole, over and over

14:14 A piece of scene which stood out to me was when serpoians are first seen by momo in the hall way. The manga uses a method where the panels are shrunk until the last one, and then the next page (literally hidden behind) shows an entire image Like a curtain of reveal, with very dark shading to induce the fear of "unknown", to sort of create a sense of impeding fear, a jumpscare. The anime can't change it's panel size, so instead it uses the light coming out of the window as a curtain of reveal. The lights slowly go out, making the room darker aswell, ultimately revealing the aliens, which is a jumpscare aswell. It's a nice effect. There's another one, when momo is venturing around the abandoned hospital we see some glimpses of the aliens.
Yessss I knew you wouldn't be able to keep away from Dandadan. I don't know if you got to see the preview in theaters but it had an interview section at the beginning where Fūga Yamashiro brought out the big book of storyboards again, and talked a bit about the challenges of adapting manga to anime (specifically about those page turn smash cuts that work well in manga but have to be reformatted in animation). I hope they release the interview featurette online soon, seems like it would be right up your alley!
The fun part is that it just gets weirder and more hype from this point forward. Once we enter the full on alien invasion arc, Shibuya Incident arc in JJK will just be blur in the memory of the anime community. Which isn't that difficult considering the many production blunders Mappa had during that arc.
Would love to see a more critical breakdown of how uzumaki went sideways. I am especially curious what animation challenges they faced in the first episode, it seemed they may have needed to pioneer some methods to make the style work. Like how hair is animated with consistency.
I love the use of lighting color theory choices in here. It really does scream of an extreme movie buff. Red lighting has been used for violence, death, and danger since it could be, but in the 70s film really leaned into it for the horror genre. Hitchcock was huge with red. Some French directors created masterpieces. Even guillermo del toro cited these older movies using red lighting in Crimson Peak to foreshadow ghost and danger activity. So when we are using ghosts, we get red. Aliens have always gotten blue with the connections to futuristic and advanced civilizations getting blue lighting. The super, high contrast when the two overlap is staggeringly compelling. I know there's a bunch of connections to red with spirits in Japan. Just look at the shrines, but I'd love to know what inspired it for Yamashiro with in films and shows. I would totally watch them.

Really looking forward for u to break down the rest of the episodes! There is just so much to unpack in every scene and its so interesting to see the comparison to the manga
I just discovered this anime a few days ago and have been rewatching and studying it! My favorite scene that stuck out to me as being a fantastic "show dont tell" moment is the scene in the ep called "First Love" after they chase the mannequin into the dump. Okarun doesnt even have any lines during this scene but you can tell exactly what shift is happening in his mind, as he watches Taro and Hana reunite and hears Taro proclaiming his love. The shot choices and Okaruns subtle expression change from astonished to determined tell us everything. The mannequin love story and the over-dramatic acting during their reunion (complete with the glowing rays of the setting sun) would be comedic as a stand-alone scene, but its more than that- it has that dual purpose of showing us an epiphany inside of Okarun's mind, using only Taro's dialogue and a brief flashback to episode one. I just find that scene to be extremely effective and touching. LOVE THIS ANIME.
This is such a great review of Dandadan! I’ve seen a few but non of them cover things like usage of camera angles, colour and the creator’s and their influences that make this anime so good.
13:44 Ohhhhh, so that's why... I was wondering why they were 'hiding' Okarun in that scene, it made me frustrated because I wanted to see his entire self, not just him in the corner...
I'm glad you kept on making videos, they're so good. Hopefully there's an anime this season that captivates you as Dungeon Meshi did so we get a buncha videos :P
youre not gona believe this but its 2:45 am on a tuesday for me and i had the most fucked up migraine that i just recovered from and i can confirm this is the song i heard. this is creepy af
I wasn't sure about the show because of the same concerns you pointed out from the first episode, but that changing scene with Okarun framed in the mirror was so beautifully done and communicated the story it was telling so effectively, I got over it and have stuck with it so far. (And I've been rewarded with more great animation and really well-written character dynamics so far.)
@oldylad Or I just want to avoid media produced by someone who gets off on it. Or I just don't like it. You really can't make that kind of judgment about a person.
Loved this breakdown. Gives me even more respect for the artists behind this. I've been a big fan of anything coming out of science Saru and I'm so exited to be able work with Yuasa himself on an [undisclosed] project. 😛
Please do more of this! I suppose you don't want to do weekly episodes again, though it was a great companion to Dungeon Meshi that I anticipated every week.
I just want to point out that one of the coolest choices between the manga and the anime was the choice in the anime for the alien space ship to actually be the moon floating behind the abandoned hospital.
I'm reminded a bit of Dungeon Meshi but the adaptation this reminds me the most of is actually Bones's adaptation of Mob Psycho 100 in the sense that it trades in some of what makes the manga art unique and interesting but in exchange you get an adaptation filled with choices in framing and animation and techniques that feel for the most part completely correct for the story and what it needs. The Dandadan anime also knows what needs work and what can be left as it is. I actually think the weakest parts of the Dandadan manga is it's action sequences. Tatsu's art is always well drawn (and his splash pages are fantastic) but the composition can sometimes leave scenes confused or not as fleshed out as they could be. Episodes 1 and 4 I would call the most improved episodes of the anime because of how they add to the action in a way that feels like they should have always been there. That kind of leads into favorite changes and additions which to me is probably all the changes in episode 1 that I really adore from the first person turbo granny shot and Okarun running away, to matching up the two kicks Momo does in the episode (maybe the intent of the manga but the angles and impact are different), to the ship crashing into the side of the hill to what I think is the best shot of the show even still which is the explosion shot of the UFO that ends the episode. It's a shot that's so well animated and also so well placed into the story and emotions of Momo that it's honestly stunning to me that it wasn't in the manga (saying as someone who read the manga first). That's just getting into the new shots and framing and not all the subtle changes animation and color adds to the story. The manga also knows when to pull from Dandadan's direction and framing as seen by the newest episode at the time of writing this comment (episode 5). In contrast to the action I think where Tatsu's art really excels is actually in the quieter and more intimate character moments. The way shots are framed and characters emote like the two leads saying good bye after defeating Turbo Granny or thinking about how much they want to talk to each other after class are the panels and monents that I think takes Dandadan from good to great. While episode 5 of the anime feels like the manga in motion I think it was still a big success in adaptation that it kept what made those chapters great to me. Had a lot to say whoops.
Dolly zoom, or as I first noticed the technique, the Event Horizon shot :p it was the first film technique I ever went out and learned on my own. I love it SO much :)
Yo, I've been following Swamp Jawn since before he had 2k subs and seeing literally my favorite anime commentary and analysis channel grow like this makes me chubby in my pants. This isn't a Dan Da Dan reference. I'm just an awkward guy..
Episode 5 at 4.05 in the windblown curtain mirror reflection starts what I think is a masterpiece in art (all art) that ends when they switch to grannies house the music ,pacing, framing, colours the zoom in and flicker of 1 eyelash right before she drops the washtub on the girls head etc. It’s one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time ,after watching I sat for a long time wondering what I had just seen . Al the film influences make a lot of sense if you go back to eizouken and the where they say anime is also film . Thanks for the video great to get al the background information!

LOVE THIS ANIME.
glad to see you also recognise the ultraman references in the series
This is such a great review of Dandadan! I’ve seen a few but non of them cover things like usage of camera angles, colour and the creator’s and their influences that make this anime so good.
13:44 Ohhhhh, so that's why... I was wondering why they were 'hiding' Okarun in that scene, it made me frustrated because I wanted to see his entire self, not just him in the corner...
I'm glad you kept on making videos, they're so good.
Hopefully there's an anime this season that captivates you as Dungeon Meshi did so we get a buncha videos :P
4:15 the moment he said "like this scene" I got an ad to donate to gazan families
I mean it is cool to do charity
This is my second watched video in the channel, and it already is one of my favourite pop culture analysis channels EVER!
The comp and style of this show is so freaking good
When I saw that dolly zoom in episode 2.. ooh boy. Oh man. Absolute C I N E M A
He really is an awkward guy. 10/10
the song in the back ground is what i hear in my head when i have a migraine at 2 am on a Tuesday
youre not gona believe this but its 2:45 am on a tuesday for me and i had the most fucked up migraine that i just recovered from and i can confirm this is the song i heard. this is creepy af
I love how you breakdown animation and cinematography. I always learn something watching your videos.
Great work! Ain’t nobody doing it like you do😆
I still can't brain how they managed to make a peak of a manga to reach the next level of peak with the anime.
I caught up to the manga in like a week or too, it only gets better and crazier
bro you deserve more subs wtf this is fire
I wasn't sure about the show because of the same concerns you pointed out from the first episode, but that changing scene with Okarun framed in the mirror was so beautifully done and communicated the story it was telling so effectively, I got over it and have stuck with it so far. (And I've been rewarded with more great animation and really well-written character dynamics so far.)
giving up a show that does weird shit like that is a sign that you’re trying to avoid thinking about something you’re attracted to
@oldylad Or I just want to avoid media produced by someone who gets off on it. Or I just don't like it. You really can't make that kind of judgment about a person.
4:18 “like this scene” (immediate cut to an old spice ad) 😂😂
I'm glad I enjoy deeper dives into things I enjoy. It broadens my appreciation for the whole, not just the product at the end.
HOW do you only have 24k subs!!! This is some of the best, funniest, most well-researched analysis of any medium I've seen on youtube!
Sharing this on socials. This is how I felt about the anime.
"Give us your, animation breakdown. Please."
Found this channel from the Dungeon Meshi animation breakdowns, and was REALLY hoping you'd cover Dandadan. Wishes do come true sometimes.
SWAMP JAWN IS BACK BABY🗣🔥💯
Ping Pong mention :) Thank you for continuing to talk about animation in an interesting and enlightening way.
This show has some of the nicest looking backgrounds I've seen in a while. I'm always pausing to appreciate them.
Bro you are hilarious, didn't think I'd have this amount of fun watching a video appreciating Dandadan's director.
I just want to point out that one of the coolest choices between the manga and the anime was the choice in the anime for the alien space ship to actually be the moon floating behind the abandoned hospital.
I did not the first aliens were 3D in places!!! That's so cool and I would love to notice thay more as well! The 3D is so good!
easily my new favorite anime of this year
your analyses are always sooo interesting and i genuinely learn something new every time. thank u i loved this
The best analysis of Dan Da Dan I’ve seen. Very good work!
He is making it up; his process was to not plan so much after several failures that he put a lot of planning into.
Its so ridiculously good. I haven't enjoyed a new anime this much in a loooong time
I'm reminded a bit of Dungeon Meshi but the adaptation this reminds me the most of is actually Bones's adaptation of Mob Psycho 100 in the sense that it trades in some of what makes the manga art unique and interesting but in exchange you get an adaptation filled with choices in framing and animation and techniques that feel for the most part completely correct for the story and what it needs.
Had a lot to say whoops.
dude.. honestly, aside from the comedy part of your vid here... solid description and background of this anime. well done bro 👌👌👌👌
Great video!!! i really love your longer format
Dolly zoom, or as I first noticed the technique, the Event Horizon shot :p it was the first film technique I ever went out and learned on my own. I love it SO much :)
YES I HOPED YOU'D DO A VID ON IT!! Are you gonna do an animation recap of every episode or just the one ? Either way this is so cool!
Yo, I've been following Swamp Jawn since before he had 2k subs and seeing literally my favorite anime commentary and analysis channel grow like this makes me chubby in my pants. This isn't a Dan Da Dan reference. I'm just an awkward guy..
An excellent video for sure!
Like this scene: ARBYS ROAST BEEF SANDWICHES - our first introduction to the..
9:12 YEESSS DOFLAMINGO WALK 🔥🔥🔥😍
And Kuma just walking behind them*
Begging on my knees for you to cover the newest episode 7 of Dandadan it's peak cinema
Ok ok I'll rewatch it while I wait for the new episode ❤
Literally couldn't hear anything you were saying for 1min 50sec once you started the timer. Had to rewatch lol
was hoping you'd do vids on this, hyped!
I am happy to see I wasn't the only one who saw this anime really good when it comes to cinematography.
Dandadan reminds me of a quote from Nora Night in Warframe. “Style, baby. It’s about knowing who you are and not giving a damn.”
7:19
😂😂😂i love your humor bro your fucking hilarious 😂
Episode 5 at 4.05 in the windblown curtain mirror reflection starts what I think is a masterpiece in art (all art) that ends when they switch to grannies house the music ,pacing, framing, colours the zoom in and flicker of 1 eyelash right before she drops the washtub on the girls head etc. It’s one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time ,after watching I sat for a long time wondering what I had just seen . Al the film influences make a lot of sense if you go back to eizouken and the where they say anime is also film .
Thanks for the video great to get al the background information!
Man the recent episode made most people cry, that makes this that much better!
