The jarring contrast between the cartoonish violence of the Acrobat Silky fight against the hyperrealist violence of the debt collector scene dropped my jaw. My god, I was there in that room with them for a split second...I'm flabbergasted by the amount of detail that was put into this sequence, what an incredibly tender and heartbreaking episode from the lol-granny-took-my-bawlz anime 😭

Same here. That scene was so real and I was not prepared for it. You described it perfectly, I felt like I was there too. I was seriously concerned for the little girl for a second, asking where are they taking her (Eventhough we actually know it). How quiet it was all of the sudden after the door was closed... That shook me.
Heck, I hate spoilers but after this episode I really needed to know if Momo and Ken would probably meet that girl later on during the series.
Than I started bawling my eyes out again, after learning how the Manga ended in that chapter...

It evokes strong feelings of protection and helplessness from the viewer. Animes that rile up your feelings like this one, are the ones that become legends.

Adding a first person view to the final moments of the kidnapping was an inspired choice.
You've spent this time learning about this loving family, but suddenly you ARE the mother, YOUR kid has been kidnapped and YOU are fighting through the pain and anguish, desperately clinging to hope as your world falls apart.

    • @mirohs
      @mirohs หลายเดือนก่อน +4

that made it so real. you could feel just how terrified that poor woman was. it almost gives you hope that everything will be okay, and then it isn't. because even if she had survived, her life was over because that little girl was her everything.

this is a minor detail but i LOVE that they drew the kid with baby fat on her body and face and the imperfect but confident movements only a young child could have. SO many anime often have children who dont act like, and more importantly dont LOOK like young children, so having her movement and face be so realistic really makes you believe "this child is REAL i could believe they were alive and happy and loved so much", and then the episode tears your heart out with it

    • @boohonkers
      @boohonkers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

Thank you for mentioning it! I literally gasped when i saw the child's design on the anime. My surprise may be just an overreaction, but given how many children are 'moe-ified' in anime these days, seeing a kid realistically designed like her is such a fresh breath of air

Same, but how she would've managed to get up to a rooftop while blinded and suffering from injuries and blood loss, I couldn't begin to guess. Before now, I thought she was already dead in that scene, and her spirit was dancing. I could understand her suddenly regaining consciousness and tearing out of the apartment on adrenaline alone, but if after her second collapse she'd given up and resolved to throw herself off a building, I can't picture that having been driven by a secondary burst of adrenaline.

I wanna give a huge shoutout to Yuhki Kurihara, who arranged Kensuke Ushio’s backstory song for the orchestra and really did a lot to make it sound so tragic and powerful at the same time. Ushio was the mastermind behind the soundtrack, but Kurihara helped bring it to life in one of the defining moments of Dandadan and she deserves her flowers for it

What made the scenes with the girl just gutwrenching for me was the realism with which she was drawn. How her face scrunches, how despite being a kid in an anime, her facial features werentjust established "symbols" for "kid", but they gave her skinfolds which were immensely adorable, while fealing so much more real.

4:09 THAT. That. That cut was one of the many that made my artist _soul_ do a screeenshot. I had to pause to let the serotonin rush through me as I hyperspeed replayed it in my head to haphazardly break it down - not necessarily the technique, but the _conceptalization_ of it. It's nothing new and nothing terribly difficult, one of those things that you'd definitely seen but makes you think "That's genius, why didn't I think of that". But the _placement_ of that shot is what makes that genius, and what makes a great storyboard artist.

This episode show just how much more emotion motion and music (and great animation) can add to the story, even knowing what was to come this episode had me crying just by seeing they being a happy family and know the devastation that was to come.
Also I think this is the point that Dandadan show that it can be more then just silly ghost and aliens after Ken's dick and balls, it probably what get people to trust the story there forward.

Haven’t seen it animated but have to say that moments like this is what makes me love the manga. You rarely see a monster or alien kill someone, but the couple of times ( this and a few in future chapters) we see a person being killed is by another person. And every time it really takes its time grounding the reader in that reality. Going from funny haha and action packed to showing who te real monsters are takes a lot of skill.

The Artists working on that show give it their all. I can't wait to see, what they do with the other Backstories.
The final jump could have been handled a bit more direct though. They added a "thud" sound to explain what happened, but the panel in the Manga, that showed her backwards dive was more understandable in terms of progression.
Regardless, it is so cool to see them actually use the medium to enhance the adaption.
It reminds me a lot of early MHA, before Studio Bones decided to just use the Manga as their Storyboard.

The dancing sequence on the roof is one of the most powerul animated scenes I have born witness to.
I was already shocked by the gritty and raw realism of the back story to that point in sharp contrast to rest of the show: the love feels grounded and realistic; the violence feels violent, evoking helplessness; the mother's daily grind is all too plausible; etc.
Her suicide scene serves, in a morbid sense, as an archetypal rape victim's reclamation of their body, dignity, identity, and agency. I know she is not explicitly shown as having been raped, but it metaphorically fits (and it is reasonable to assume she has been at some point: vulnerable single mom involved in sex work indebted to loan sharks/pimps; not a huge leap).
The scene is where we witness the mother at her lowest point (physically severely wounded, daughter lost, it was all for nothing), but also unleashed at her most beautiful, powerful, and transcendant.
Add the musical crescendo, the gorgeous colouration, the stunning animation. I was intermittently a sobbing mess the rest of the night after I first watched this episode.

I actually stopped watching a few seconds into this scene when it aired and came back to it today. For a minute I was wondering if I accidently clicked on a different show. It took me a minute to realize this was Silky's backstory.

To be fair I didn't cry from this episode simply because I'd had my heart pulverized by Violet Evergarden, Wolf Childen, and Maquia... which while they hit differently hit me a lot more often.... through their runs.

i just finished episode 7,8,9 and found this video immediately (like i dont need anymore reason to believe that all my devices are listening and tracking me) but i did not realize till just now that Ira was seeing a ghost, i didnt notice that ledge she stepped off was a building and she (unalive) herself from the loss of her daughter in the kidnapping. I felt sorry for her in the episode but omg, i feel like i didnt feel sorry enough, because of not knowing her fate.

I wasn't strong for not being able to cry to this. I hated how I couldn't cry. I felt my humanity slip off with the rest of Acro Silky as she fell when I watched it. But I couldn't cry no matter how much I wanted to.

I fucking LOVED the whole sequence of this episode. Such an intense tone shift with a great payoff! Ive noticed the first 2 yokai that theyve delt with, Turbogranny and Silky, both have had some connection to violence directed at women. I hesitate to say sexual violence, but an argument could be made i think...

I think my only issue is that a lot of people misunderstand the rooftop scene due to how they had to censor the suicide. Personally, I also just prefer the simplistic way the Manga told the backstory with a few images, but I do appreciate how beautiful they made the anime.

Don't do ballet myself, but someone I watch explained that the type of ballet she's doing is free form. Ballet is based on precise movement and following the lead of the music or someone else, but on the roof, she's doing her ballet purely off of emotion, spinning and jumping wildly without much rhythm as a way of expression and release.

On the Netflix version there is not 5 frames showing her jumping, they just deleted that, all the violence and gore shown were ok, but slightly eluding to someone jumping off, that's off the charts.

I love these breakdowns so much, I've watched a few of your videos by now and I'm always amazed at how deep you go into it. where do you get the information on which people did specific storyboards, frames, or scenes? I find it so cool and want to look more into who's animating my favorite shows (which heavenly delusion is one, and I definitely noticed the stylistic similarities that you mentioned but had no idea how to connect the two!)

There are a few websites that list basic credits like storyboards and such, like AniDB and animenewsnetwork (with varying degrees of reliability). For the individual animation cuts, ultimately the information usually comes from either the studio's or the animators' twitter accounts, but people do a pretty good job of aggregating it on sakugabooru dot com!

It really was an amazing adaptation of a fairly short scene but I hate that they cut the shot of her last grand jeté off the roof's edge. Like you said it's easy to miss, and it was such an iconic, powerful panel, a literal dying swan dance!
