L-theanine for ADHD

  • The amino acid L-theanine, abundant in tea and in certain mushrooms, as well as being available as a purified supplement, is frequently advertised as helping with attention. It also has a reputation for improving sleep, and decreasing anxiety. It is frequently administered with caffeine. L-theanine is one of the more commonly recommended supplements for those with ADHD.
A few studies support these claims, but have included very few individuals, a narrow range of dosages, and several of the reports come from the same laboratory. While L-theanine appears to be quite safe, whether most individuals with ADHD are likely to benefit from it remains unknown.

I find myself less agitated on coffee/caffeine, makes me feel calm and relaxed, actually slows me down and I feel more focused compared to baseline

    Hello again,
Just wanted to bounce off the comment about lacking viewers despite great and informative content, which is true.
As a general rule, livestreams are great tools for already subscribed viewers that are fans of the channel. It's utility is that it converts an engaged viewer of the channel into a participating one, which makes them even more engaged.
On the other hand livestreams are very bad tools for creating a community and building a fan base. They require daily, systematic streams so that people can find the stream, know when it's on, and build a viewership on the long haul. Not to mention livestreams are not promoted by youtube's algorithm to basic youtube users, so you're also losing on discoverability.
In this case, semi-regular streams to a small fanbase is the worst case scenario. It makes it so the only people who will be able to participate in a live stream will be already hyper-engaged fans, who also happen to manage to catch the livestream on their timezone and in their schedule. This is a very small minority of your fan base.
This is why you aren't seeing the kind of growth you should be getting on a channel with such amount of quality content.
In my opinion you should favor standard TH-cam videos, on a regular schedule.
This will not only help discoverability thanks to the algorithm that will push it to other users, but most importantly it will also help keep your fanbase active, I'm sure most of your subscribers don't even know you have new videos this past year because they only appear in the live section, therefore if you ever get a new subscriber you will lose out on their engagement, and thus no growth.
Other upsides of videos over livestreams is that you can edit the video if you want to, you can also prepare some form of a written outline to better focus the video, and you are free from daily occurences that might happen as you can start and stop the recording as you chose, and finally the audio/video quality will be slightly better because the processing won't have to be put through the streaming processor and thus be more optimized.
The downside is that you lose that back and forth of a livestream, but with a small amount of live viewers, you are taking the chance that on each stream you might not have many or any chatters.
If the back and forth is important to you, my suggestion would be, through the video format at the end of every subject encourage the viewers to ask questions in the comment section and say that you will answer them in a seperate video.
Not only will that make two videos to engage with, it will also give people time to formulate more thought out questions and select the most interesting ones, and also give you time to better flesh our your answers.
This will also lead to double the videos on the channel, and thus a scheduled release of 2 videos per week, which is not bad in creating consistency.
Another benefit is that you can also record multiple videos in advance and schedule them to release later, therefore if you ever take a break, or go on vacation, there will always be releases.
Those are just my thoughts about community building on youtube, hope they help!

I really appreciate the time you've put in to trying to help me navigate TH-cam more successfully. I did have some questions I would like to bounce off of you, but it might be better to do so via email drjohnkruse@gmail.com, or even phone / FaceTime, if you have any time over the next few days (particularly Friday or Saturday). Thanks.

No problem, I'm happy to help!
I sent you an email last month when we talked about transferring your livestreams to the video section, but it must have went to the Junk folder.
TH-cam won't let me post my email but it starts with maximepoli (My first and last name).
I'm free to chat over the next few days whether by email or phone, no problem
I'll send you another email with my information.

My anecdotaly it's better than nothing. Still it's nothing compared to meds even the non stims. If i take my vyvanse normaly i can't take coffee, but green tea is fine. I think it's not so stimulating due to the theanine. Before i got my diagnosis used to self medicate myself with nicotine replacement products. They were greatest of the non medications. Still they were nothing compared to vyvare or concerta. Also i don't recommend smoking or anything like that.

Caffeine and theophylline have diuretic effects. I didn't run across any evidence that theanine, which is in a completely different chemical class, would have these effects.

Dr. Kruse-do psychiatrists still perform psychosurgery? 🪄🎩🧥

    • @DrJohnKruse
      @DrJohnKruse  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Psychosurgery is still being done - generally not lobotomies, but implanting deep brain electrodes for stimulation in depression or OCD that hasn't responded to previous treatment, and also internal capsule lesions. But it is almost always neurosurgeons who are doing the procedures, in consultation with a psychiatrist/mental health team.
