    Very nice...the drone looks great in blue. My two cents: It would be nice if you could've measured with the drone up in the air. The air hitting the ground can create a lot of noise, therefore what we're hearing may potentially not be the sound of the propellers themselves, but instead the sound of the wind hitting the ground bellow. Also, you may want to double check the 3db thing...as far as I understand, 3db is double the sound pressure level. Cheers

    • @MatthewHaines
      @MatthewHaines  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, Rennedy. I did consider the idea of measuring it in the air. However, the drone wouldn’t stay motionless and then the measurement would change. Distance from source to mic is critical, as you know. I suppose I could have placed the drone on some sort of pedestal. I’m not sure if that would have yielded a different result.
      3db is the doubling of sound intensity from a physics standpoint, but from a human perception standpoint, 10db is the commonly quoted change for a doubling of volume. We hear logarithmically.

    Only way to tell is in the air and at the same height. For instance your drone may have a completely different sound hovering than on the ground. Because what really counts is the work load on the motors and the speed of the prop that is going to give you different sounds. So if the prop is bigger or has more pitch the rpms are going to change to make it hover in place.

    • @MatthewHaines
      @MatthewHaines  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that in the air would be better, but I couldn’t find a way to reliably measure it in the air. It doesn’t change the major problem though: Master Airscrew claims they’re “stealth” and that you’ll hear a difference, and yet they only claim an almost inaudible change of 2db.

  • @PacificOceanQuest
    @PacificOceanQuest ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I hear a different pitch in sound but your right . The volume of sound , it sounds the same to my ears. For me it’s just getting off the ground with the original DJI propeller angry Bee’s sound. But once I get up over 200 feet the sound is hardly noticeable. So it doesn’t really matter at that point.

    • @MatthewHaines
      @MatthewHaines  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lisa, and thanks for your comment. You’re right, the drone is next to silent when you get to proper flying altitude, so “stealth” becomes irrelevant. I was just testing a very cheap drone recently, and even when it was 200-300 feet away, I could hear it in my voiceover recordings. Definitely not as quiet as the Mini 2!

But I will still keep my mini 2 . because I do love flying it. It’s so much fun. On the mini djis. The very flexible props is by design. They are like cushion or suspension. The stiffer ones react quicker because of no cushion ect. It causes vibration to travel threw the arms as well. I tried the cf ones so far. They are stiff. Think they would be great if thinner flexible and of course strong. Air screws im guessing the same. Better maybe..., ones will check me. For now stock is tops for me. Want brite orange? Air brush and outer 3d of your stock ones. Cake.

    From my own understanding having been helping out with audio tech in theatres for years (not professional, hobbyist): pitch changes how sound travels. So while it may be a negligible difference up close, when distance starts to factor in a higher pitch won't travel nearly as far - take cars with bass-heavy tones as an example. Those you can hear for blocks, while the little high-pitched EV you can hear up close (because of the different distances the sound waves can travel).
    This is much the same as in radio frequency, where a higher frequency won't travel as far before dissipating (2.4GHz vs 5GHz WiFi, for example).
    With both frequencies/pitches having a fairly low volume to begin with, I doubt that they make much difference - but there is the different tones to consider.

    I think that it's a matter of “perceived” volume - on my Mini 3 Pro, the MAS “Stealth” props definitely had a lower pitch vs the OEM props, which takes into account that higher pitches are perceived as louder, despite the decibel level being the same.
    Now that MAS has come out with their “Super Stealth” series, I'm curious to know how they compare.

    Hey Matt, love the blue props...! Appreciate your approach to measuring the difference, but there are so many variables in measuring sound that each video made on these props has some flaws. Sound measurements need to be highly controlled, not just for distance between the sound source and the microphone (as your tape attempted to achieve) but for many other factors (e.g. what was the ambient noise in the environment at the time of the recordings, the microphone's characteristics, etc).
    Your sound recordings results showing a higher pitch and equivalent sound levels are valid for your experiment, but do appear to contradict the results reported by other experimenters. Such is the scientific method..! In any case, my ears tend to support the lower pitch claim (less 'perceived' sound level), and my eyes love the red colour I selected for my Mini 2...so happy with my setup. Cheers,

    • @MatthewHaines
      @MatthewHaines  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment! None of the videos I watched on these props had any controlled testing at all. It was just based on (very fallible) perception. If you’ve got some links to videos that tested properly, I’d love to take a look!
      But even beyond that, the fact that MS only claims a 2db drop in level, should give the buyer pause. That change is below the threshold that many people can perceive. Whether one can perceive the difference or not, it’s hardly “stealth” IMO.
      Thanks again! And red would have been my other choice. 👍

      Du hast Recht, aber mir reichen die Videoaufnahmen, wo deutlich der Unterschied zu hören ist. Eine Compakt Range ist dafür nicht notwendig, weil ja dies nicht der realen Umgebung entsprechen würde. ...wissenschaftliche Aufnahmen braucht kein Mensch dafür. Matt hat das fantastisch gemacht. 👍

  • @leathleyg5995
    @leathleyg5995 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's a host of potential tests at various altitudes in different air temperatures, humidity levels and pressures. The variables are almost infinite so there comes a point where differences are so negligible that testing is just academic. I think to develop a product that would really give a noticeable sound reduction would require alteration of the prop RPM, a significant increase in prop size, and probably some software tweaking.
    Earplugs are on special offer a Amazon if it bothers you that much.!

    I bought a set in Orange so I could see the drone easier. I too like color in the props so I think I'll get a set of Blue ones ( wish they were darker Blue and put them on the aft motors, that way I can tell which way the drone is pointed if I can't see my screen or during landing. One thing I did notice is they are bigger than DJI props so be VERY careful when putting the Prop Bra on for storage so they are not being deformed. I actually only put 2 prop blades under the top strap and secure the other 2 with a rubber band. Hmm- orange and blue - GO GATORS!

The very first ascent you do with stock, it's like a rattle almost or a flapping sound at approximately 100-120hz, and comes and goes, due to some variable I can't identify, perhaps simply wind. 😀 Put the Stealth back on, carefully- the big ones are also razor sharp on both leading and trailing edges- and whoosh... so nice and smooth, it can easily outperform the "fwrawgh fwrawgh fwrawgh fwrawgh fwrawgh fwrawgh" -hope I spelled that right! the rubber tipped DJI Mavic 3 props. @@MatthewHaines no I was only aware of name. I went to youtube to see what people say, I live next to a 2 million acre national park with water falls and canyons and was looking for a drone that is reliable.
      I am disabled in work accident and drones were just starting and I said to my brother this will change the world.

    Next they will claim the military use them lol , when ever a product uses these tatics to sell stuff by putting fulse claims on thier product it makes me go get other products , funny how a company with hostory in RC community would make fulse claims to sell stuff , instead of just trusting thier customer base , reputation means more then sales in my opinion and this company just showed they will do what ever they can to sell a product , see if they had just put ,,,been makeing RC blades since the 60s on the box i would be more intersted in buying them , instead they claim thier stealthy , come on guys if they could make silent blades dont you think they would have them on real vehicles first , planes , helicopters,,air boats .....ya to believe they will be stealthy is silly really ....i did find a way to make it stealthy though , go to 100feet elevation.....done .......
