The really big question here is WHY doesn’t Honda’s extended warranty cover the audio unit? I thought the warranty was a ‘bumper to bumper’ warranty. The next question being, does Honda know there is a design flaw in the audio unit and that being the reason for non-coverage? I just know that more and more shortcomings I hear and see about with the new Goldwing makes me wish I had my 2005 model instead of the 2023 Tour model that I just purchased. If for no other reason than the fact that the ‘05 model is a hell of a lot more comfortable……especially the seat!

Good ‘PSA’ . I know there is a lot to consider when touching such intricate machinery as our latest GL1800! Fuse 25 is easy to remember, and right there next to the battery. Thanks from all who received this message. I just put a trickle charger on for keeping battery up, via a quick connection ( standard polarized two prong push/pull insulated)

Merry Christmas Cruiseman and thank you for the tip. I purchased a new GL1800 Tour back in July 2023 and keep the battery hooked to a Battery Tender in the garage. No battery issues thus far and no jump starts. I will definitely be interested to hear what Honda has to say about this subject. Enjoy your time in Midland with your family. Cheers, James. Thanks for the heads up.
Last summer, during a 5 week tour on my ‘21 GoldWing Tour, my battery showed signs of failing. For the last 10 days or so, I had to jumpstart it every morning with my Scosche booster pack. Once started, it was good for the whole day. It didn’t cause any issues with the bike whatsoever. That’s not saying that it never would. I replaced the battery as soon as we got home. I carry the jump starter with me every day, just in case and if I ever have to boost the battery again, I will do as you suggest and remove that #25 fuse. Better safe than sorry.
Thanks again. Have a great Christmas!

In Colorado I was overjoyed to meet an old friend, hopped in his car & went to lunch, leaving the ignition on. Upon return, bike wouldn't start, so brought out plug in jumpers for Powerlet plug, but that didn't work. Later found I used too small a fuse, which blew, so jumped directly from his old Rover. Started right up & no problems since. Later converted to lithium, which is great.

Merry Christmas cruiseman. I’ve been seeing these post on FB and the forums pop up for several years now with the Audio Units failing and will pop the 15 amp fuse immediately. Everybody that has had this issue have a 2018 model bike. 19-23 I haven’t seen any reports. When the audio unit fails it does t allow for the ride modes to function which is a major safety issue. A couple have had Honda warranty this audio unit but the way they worded the claim as being a safety issue where they can’t access the ride modes, or the different modes for riding 2up etc. The owners that went to the dealer and said my audio and screen no longer works that’s the ones that the dealer pretty much told them to kick rocks and pony up the 3-3500$ repair bill. If this is only happening to 2018 bikes leads me to think that an update was made to the audio unit in 19 and newer to have better circuit protection for voltage spikes.

A friend of mine has the 2017 GL1800 and of course his display is different than the 2018+ models. He told me last week, they are replacing his display screen again, and this makes it the 6th time. He told me it has been covered under his Honda Extended warranty. He says the screen pixels start going out again. I checked the price on his LCD display and it retails for $2,654.85. The one on the 2018+ retails for $3,072.13. I have also heard that Honda will replace the 2018+ display because it shows the bikes information such as what gear you are in, suspension setting, mileage, and all that stuff so it is covered under warranty because you need to see all of that. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Very interested to see what Honda has to say. I've used a jump start kit at least twice on my '18 Tour, manual. I may have been lucky, but didn't have a problem. I was told, years ago, to never jump a bike from a vehicle, with the vehicle's motor running. The vehicle's charging system could fry the bike's electronics.

It doesn't matter if you put a giant caravan battery in there it makes no difference if you jump it or not because it's absolutely no different from the voltages and amperage is that you would use normally. My initial thoughts on this as a retired electrician, would be directed to the auxillary voltage source (booster pack, secondary vehicle, or plug-in charging/boosting unit) as the culprit for the issue rather than an achilles heal of the GoldWings. Most of today’s vehicle (motorcycle, auto, tractor, etc.) electrical/ electronic systems are protected or engineered to work within a certain voltage spread. If the supplied voltage is too low, things either just don’t work or become erratic. If the voltage is too high, some components shut down or just burn-out. But a point to consider is that fuses do not protect against over-voltage. They protect against over-current or over-flow of electricity within a circuit. Yes, the level of voltage does play a role in the level of current flow but there can be circumstances where a high voltage can be applied to an electrical or electronic component before there is any level of current flow to be sensed, or measured, by the fuse or circuit breaker. If the circuit resistance of the component isn’t great enough to control or withstand the higher than normal voltage, in most cases it will be damaged to a point of non-function along with further effecting the voltage and current flow to other components. Maybe a good analogy would be to consider taking the extremely high voltage present at the primary side of your home’s transformer and applying that to your home’s electrical panel. With all circuit breakers turned on when the high voltage is applied, this voltage will will get past the circuit breakers to the home’s appliances and lighting fixtures before the circuit breakers can react to a level of current beyond its trip level. The high voltage is able to either burn through or short-circuit the electrical and electronic components. So the point here is that depending on what is being used to supply the “jumping voltage”, could have a damaging impact on the GoldWing’s electronic and electrical components. I would agree with CM in his advisory for the removal of the fuse, if only to reduce the likelihood of a higher voltage getting to the audio unit by the inherent disconnection of one of the two (+ & -) voltage supply lines. But, I would also note that there will be at least some energization of electrical, and more importantly electronic components, even if fuse #25 is removed for the jump-starting. Hence, if the secondary (booster) voltage supply is putting out an overly high voltage, other things could be also damaged. Hopefully the take away here is that the use of well engineered and manufactured (quality) chargers and booster packs are key to reducing the odds of having a very costly issue.

I would like to mention something related that might be of interest. Some time ago, I placed a “smart” charger on my 2018 wing, not because the battery was discharged, but more to maintain charge, as it hadn’t been ridden for 10 days. As you may know, many automated chargers use SCRs to efficiently regulate power, as opposed to the older, more traditional chargers that use a simple transformer and rectifier; unfortunately, the clipped AC output possible from a smart charger can create a large amount of electrical noise and harmonics. Not a problem for a battery, but I did not disconnect my battery cables. Later, I found that my original key fob no longer started the bike (I was so glad I bought a spare fob earlier). For whatever reason, the bike would not recognize the fob, but in doing the fob program procedure, it began working again. An isolated incident? Possibly, but it seems to me that the electronics of this bike should have been designed with some real world safeguards- such as being harmed by a simple jumpstart described here. Hey Cruiseman, I own a black 2021 touring DCT. I have completed over 8 different Iron Butt rides on this bike and I love it! Once on a SS1500 Gold my bike died at a truck stop. I tried to jump my bike, and I may have connected the cables wrong. As a result the check engine light came on, but that was about all. There was a honda dealership in the local town, and I stopped there after jumping my bike (with a portable jumper the next day). They checked out the bike and could not find any issues. I had to change out the stock battery because of the issues it caused. I'll keep your suggestion in mind of removing the fuses to jump the bike as it makes sense.
I also change how I start my motorcycle ever since this incident (and a similar one that occurred afterward). When I put the key in the ignition I start my bike right away because a lot of the electronics (ie: radio/sound-system) will quickly drain the battery. Also if your battery dies because of extended audio usage (Or accessories), It takes roughly ~150-200miles of highway riding after a jump start for the regulator/rectifier to completely recharge the battery. I carry two different portable jump starters as I have found them to be unreliable as well. I try to keep them charged the night before a long ride. But If I forget I'll charge one while on a long extended ride. $2k for a new headlight? OUCH! How often do you need to replace the headlight?

Hey brother, been awhile. Probably a good thought for other rides as this type of system may not be unique to Honda. Systems are Systems. Merry Christmas.

Hiya - I live in UK and own a 2019 GL1800 Goldwing. In April 2023 I fitted a new battery (as per your advice saying it might be prudent to renew the battery every 3 years.
In December 2023 I accidently drained the battery after leaving the bike powered up whilst updating my Tom Tom Rider Satnav that I had added to the bike to provide speed camera alerts and additional route facilities that the built-in satnav does not provide. The battery was totally flat. I always have my bike on an Optimate trickle charger 24/7 too.
I left the bike charging overnight but the next day the bike ignition would not illuminate or do anything. The Optimate charger indicated it was fully charged - both green LED's on. I checked the battery voltage and it was 13.3 volts but the bike ignition would not come on. At this stage i did not know if there was a fault with the bike so I used some battery jump cables onto another battery and the bike started up first time.
I kept the bike running for 10 minutes after removing the jumper cables to hopefully boost the bike battery. I then turned off the bike but yet again no ignition lights came on and hence would not start again.
I purchased a GooLoo portable battery jump starter device and wired it to my bike - it worked flawlessly without damaging the audio functions on the bike. Hopefully it will stay that way but I do appreciate your advice on removing Fuse 25. It will be interesting to hear any response from Honda that you may receive.
I then decided to remove the battery and placed it on a more powerful Optimate with a deep recovery function but again after leaving it overnight the bike failed to respond to anything. In total frustration i put my original battery back on the bike and it started first time!
I bought the new battery off eBay in April and it had a one year warranty. The seller honoured its replacement and have now fitted this to my Goldwing. It seems that the battery voltage was correct when charged but when any kind of load was applied it just catastrophically failed.
I hope this comment will help other riders if they do come across a similar battery failure.
Thanks for your very interesting videos and advice on the Honda Goldwing. I always enjoy them. I apologise for the long comment too :)

I've heard for years that on newer cars with lots of electronics you shouldn't jump car to car with the other car running. It causes a sudden surge from the running car's charging system that can fry delicate electronics. A good jump starter unit is safer, but knowing how to use it properly is equally important. I'm sure this could be a problem on a lot of motorcycles and cars, with all the electronics used these days.

This seems to only affect the 2018 Goldwing. Honda is well aware of the issue and made changes for the 2019+ bikes. Lewis at EC is working on a repair for the board. Plenty of info on the most popular Goldwing Forum.

Always connect the negative last and disconnect the negative first, motorcycle, car, whatever, on the vehicle being started or the one supplying power. I work on modern transport and deal with these things on a daily basis, be careful and think about what you are doing when involved with these procedures, CAN systems are robust but care must be taken when working with them.

Makes sense jump box may cause damage because if bike battery is open cell or high internal battery resistance with a bad battery; as a result, if external jumper box can output a higher voltage than the bikes OEM battery; as a result, then jumper box, with higher the normal 12 V battery output voltage, damage many electronic components that are now standard equipment on most motorcycles. I believe that most jumper boxes rely on the vehicle battery to hold the Jumper box output voltage to a controlled reasonable level. A motorcycle battery might just be too small to do that voltage maintenance required

i read something about this and the issue seemed to be jump starting from a vehicle with its engine running. Possibly transient spikes coming from that vehicle charging system.
    Via the alternator.

I have actually damaged a running car's alternator while jump starting another car that was completely dead, but the dead car had a push button start system, and it acted weird and switched the starter off and on which I wonder perhaps as to why it had damaged the running car's alternator?

I am experiencing this right now. I haven't jump started my Goldwing, but I had the battery on a charger all winter. I started her up last week and found that my audio unit (and display screen) was dead in the water and the audio fuse was blown. I did some trouble shooting, but can't get it back. Going to have to make an appt with Honda I guess.

I’ve jumpstarted my 2019 Goldwing Tour DCT a few times already. Each time there was something weird about it. The dash would display straight lines across where the “TOUR” would be displayed. It would stay like that for the ride. Then a shot off for a few minutes. Turn back on and everything was back to normal.

Merry Christmas, 5:48 Cruiseman. Thank you for the heads up. Great suggestion.
I’m confused about your comment though (5:45) “…turn it off, put the fuse back in, start up the bike like normal…” I doubt the bike would start up again if I turned it off right after having to jump start it. Maybe that’s not what you meant. I suspect leaving the fuse out until I put a new battery in would make more sense.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I suppose that depends on the level of damage to your battery. You are correct that in some cases, your battery may be completely shot and will not crank the engine, even after building up a charge. I will clarify this in a future video.

2018+ Goldwing tour here. I have used a jump battery pack without issues at all. Consider this: There are a plethora of cheap quality jump starts available out there. Perhaps the problem is a faulty jump product or simply misuse during implementation causing a short in the attempt to jump. I guarantee it's a minuscule number of issues amplified by social media per usual suspects.

    • @cruisemansgarage

It is not just using a jump start, the 18 and 19 models may fail for any voltage spike, even the ISG will blow it. Source? My ‘18 did this with a good battery and not being jumped. The ISG did it. Cost $4,000 to repair. Honda will NOT warranty it.

  • @donmunroe8148
    @donmunroe8148 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Certainly the safe advice until clarification is made from Honda. My concern is jump starting can be anywhere from a portable jump start battery to hooking jumper cables up to a running car or truck. I have “jump started” my 2006 wing before off a car battery but the car MUST NOT BE RUNNING. Just hook up to the battery and you’re fine. I have not done this on my 2018 so I am inclined to be safe and follow your procedure until further information from Honda. I suspect maybe somebody hooked up to a running car and fried the electronics? That will happen with any motorcycle regardless of electronic stuff. Wing owners are prone to think that since, at least the last generation, had an Honda Accord alternator that they could jump start off a running car - Don’t! Not worth it - just jump off the car battery with the car not running.

I do not SPECIFICALLY show how to replace the air filter on an airbag model, but it is virtually identical to the non-airbag. I will be amending my air filter video soon to go into more detail on this. The airbag canister is in the same location, and mounts the same as the center pocket. You don't even need to unplug it and remove it, you can just move it off to one side to gain access to the air cleaner box. HOWEVER, *IMPORTANT!* _Always disconnect the negative cable on your battery before working on an airbag model._

I have a 2018 GW Tour. I have used battery tenders in the past for winter storage. This fall my battery was slowly dying and while I was at Home Depot, I couldn’t start the bike. My wife drove to me and I jumped from her car battery. I then replaced my battery with a new one and bought a battery jump starter for future issues. I have not used the jump starter and I have not had any issues from the jump start from the car. Could the issue be the jump starters vs a jump from another motor vehicle?

Merry Christmas to you all !! I had a catastrophic failure of the Audio Unit in autumn last year. The fuse (No.25) was blown and the screen was completely dark. Also I couldn't select any gear and driving mode. So the bike was completely INOP. We discovered, that the audio unit had a severe internal failure. Luckily we found a specialist, who could locate the faulty part on the board of the audio unit (High Tech with Infrared Thermal Scanner). After replacing the faulty part and reinstalling the audio unit, we still had a failure message in the Rear Can Bus Control Unit. So we replaced also the Rear and the Forward Can Bus Control Unit (you can't repair them, they are kind of shrink-wrapped in a plastic housing). Before the mess, I did some Jump Starts a couple of weeks before because of an empty battery. Maybe that was the reason why the fuse was blown. After all, it remains a mystery. I think that's a very good hint !!!!!
