- We set out to do as many mods as possible in just one day on this budget VW UP! In homage to our original episode on our Daihatsu Cuore back in 2008, these mods will be cheap and quick, unlike the car which is cheap (and slow)

He was an old man who was holding out in his simple nice house, while the world around him moved on to sky scrapers and apartments. This is much like the Up with it's basic mechanicals and lack of fancy new gizmos. The boxy shape of the Up is also like Carl's square head hahaha Also it's just a great film and so is the car!

Here in Brazil we have the turbo engine available, its a commom car among young car enthusiasts so we have some of them pretty modified. Its kinda of hard to find one that haven´t been remaped, we have a lot of recipes and kinda of go-to parts to make'em look better too. Really love this little car.

I live in Pernambuco, Brazil. It's rare to find an Up because it came Out of Line and when i had a Up TSI, it was completaly original and it was a mini Bugatti. We already found an "Level 2 Engine" Up, with 170hp it already was a rocket. So he just accelerated because of my Up, And also i accelerated too, why not? To tell those Brazillian Up's rocket, first i say that my Up was behind that Up Level 2 while hes accelerating. But i didn't knew it was accelerating too much, so he accelerate all max 100%, All i have to say is: That will start flying one day because of it's torque.

In europe, VW sells an EV version of the up, the range is only about 200km, but its actually pretty fun to drive because of the instant torque.
Its one of the few sensible EVs out there.
It is affordable, looks like a normal car and the package makes sense.
But the range is simply shit and they governed it to 130kph.
Probably tp not take the glory from their dogshit "ID" models away which are so expensive you might aswell just finance an A Class.
If it ever bothers you enough to change it, wheel options can be opened with a set of hubs from a Polo 6R, a fair bit of the running gear is shared, and rear discs can be fitted to the Up also ;)

I love that you guys remain true to the roots of this channel with this stuff. When I was in HS I would watch the blue turd videos and it was nice because it related to my car. It's nice to see y'all work your magic on regular cars that people actually drive. Thanks for doing it all these years!

Some quick tips from a guy who services and works on these almost daily.
Pull out the entire airbox before removing any screws, just pull the airbox up until loose and push it to the left to get the little plastic piece on the pipe out of the rubber grommet on the valve cover. When you have to remove the ignition coils, run it really nice and warm, it'll make it MUCH easier to pull them out, also get some dielectric grease INSIDE the ignition coil boot. If they're still stuck or if you for whatever reason can't go out and drive it till it's warm, pull the top of the ignition coil off the boot and put an airgun in the the hole of the rubber boot and blow, they should come right out and the coils can just be put back together.
You're all wrong if you don't call this thing 'Updog' ...
Misha Charoudin has (or had) a well-modified Up on the Nurburgring, but he's in Germany so it's a little easier to get parts for it. The Up is a great car; you won't set any speed records, but it's very chuckable, and as Marty said, a surprising amount of interior space for a modern compact - 4 adults over 6' will fit quite comfortably.

My missus fell for the Up as soon as she saw it, so she has a 4 door one. It is brilliant around town I have to say. The one hint I have to give you is if you park it for any length of time do not leave the hand brake on. They quite quickly lock onto the drum and with ours I had to spend an uncomforatble hour or so spraying the drum full of any solvent available and pounding it to break the hand brake loose. We cant fault it otherwise. Enjoy it, I know you will and I love what you have done with it so far.
Great content, if you guys are going to be doing the coilover conversion, a very easy way to replace suspension is to unto the 3 nuts on the ball joint, remove track rod end from hub, remove drive shaft, remove calliper, and droplink, get the whole thing out on the work bench, it will take less time to do so, and much easier to fit the new shock in :) (special tool to split the collar available in most stores, 10mm splitter tool) HOPE IT HELPS :D
In Brazil we got the turbo version, it's very used as a track car, even the stock ones are pretty quick.
I believe Brazil is a good place to look for parts, surely will be cheaper than UK.

The 'technology' behind making a 'hot air intake' work is the spreadsheet that someone made at one point showing how much cheaper it was to produce that way

I know this can be a fairly straightforward, nothing too exciting episode but Moog's short bit about replacing the interior air filter got me thinking - hey, I've ever even seen the filter in the car I've owned for nearly 10 years. And I don't recall seeing it being replaced in a service. I might quickly google a video about how to access mine to see what condition it's in (while I love this channel I haven't ever modified or really serviced my own car... shame on me, I know!). So I google how to do it, straightforward enough OK let's go and UH OH there is NO filter! How long have I had no filter!? Forever!?
So hats off to you MCM - I will now order an interior filter thanks to this video
I'm sure you'll find less dust and leaf particles in your interior after installing the cabin air filter, makes a huge difference lol

Amen, I’m scared to see the one in my classic if it has one, and I gotta know what the one in my Volvo looks like.. I got it at 120k (1989) so I’m not sure it ever has been replaced ether.. lol
Time for a new mechanic!
I have a Seat Mii, which is the same car, and I have that because "the reason" but I have it with some cool wheels from the Mango version, just for breaking the boringness good combo color, but that's it. Super reliable, super fun to drive, lacks bit of a power, but it's quite comfy, has power windows, abs, esp, power steering, radio, and that's it! you don't need anything else. I made 1000+ km in a day no problem, my back didn't ache at all... Love it.

Take a look at the Brazilian scene for modding the Up. It's a very popular vehicle. You can get a new OEM 1L turbo engine for around 1k USD. People here swapping turbos have reached whp 150+.

Hey Marty and Moog, i suggest adding disk brakes at the back which will help you guys a fair bit on the track. My dad had one and he sourced hubs and suspension components from a Polo 6 if I remember correctly.
Also the engine is also used in some Polo's, so it might be easier to search for engine mods for Polo.
Oh and name suggestion : Upto. (spelled as OptO)

I think "UP YOURS!" done in a reverse image on the front would be perfect for track day as everyone whizzes past you.

My mods included cold air in, home made; 1.8mm spark gap to advance timing for higher reving; accelerator chip to make it respond much quicker; tiny 165/60 14 tyres to solve over gearing problem and exhaust to reduce back pressure at higher revs. Fun and nippy town car.
I had a Up! as a loan car while they were repairing my knicked polo gti. its slow. but comfy and a blast to throw around in a congested city

Those coils are the same design as the EA888.3 (2.0 TSI) and EA855 EVO (2.5 TFSI). Using mechanical leverage can tear the boot as the rubber grips on to the plug porcelain. Get the engine warm and stick a long nose air duster down and blast. The pressure sneaks up the plug and breaks the grip and the coil just slips out.

I actually came across might car mods many years ago from a forum discussion on why performance air filters didn’t work and their video was referenced. Now her I am still watching them now =)

Here in Brazil we have the VW Up! TSI version that runs on ethanol, offering 105hp stock, but with some ECU tune it goes arround 130/140whp and 250nm of torque. Its a really fun daily car!
I own an Up, and I must say it's the best car I've ever owned. Definately not ugly or boring as you claim. It's not the fastest car in the world, but it's spectacular and well-built.
Tech tip in regards of the ignition coils: get the engine to operating temp and then remove them. Makes removing them a whole lot easier
dielectric grease inside the coil boot helps in the future too.

Also another tech tip. If the top half of the ignition coil comes out but the rubber boot is stuck, remove the spring inside and use an air gun and blow in the boot to pop the boot out.
I also use a zip tie to remove them. It’s easier to pull them with some leverage!
I’ve driven a few Up!s as VW dealer loan cars while my Golfs were being serviced. Happy little things with sweet overall manners and particularly good steering feel/feedback. The rev-happy 3cyl and a slick clutch/gearshift combo provides much more fun than the spec suggests. A small amount of lift-off oversteer as per Golf Mk1 & Mk2 is the icing on a diet-friendly cake 🙂 Name suggestion: sorry, but it has to be BallsUp 😁

My wife bought one new in 2012...I wasn't sold on it...then I got in and drove it...what a little beast! fast forward to 2022 and we still have it and still fun to drive (my daily drive is a 2009 AMG C63), we changed the plugs and also added the same K&N filter, and it did make a bit of a difference.

We have these in most of the carsharing services in Budapest, Hungary (mostly the electric ones) and they’re the perfect beaters. Also, their prices are super low in Europe too (with all the Skoda and Seat rebadged models too) so these are probably the next generation’s loud-at-night Honda Civics

After marty mentioned it in the previous video, I feel like MCM should really try a french car at this point, a 306GTi or something similar. Maybe a Peugeot 505 (RWD) with an RB, 2JZ or a barra, that would be epic! Also keep up the great videos guys!

I was thinking 205 GTi as I've driven one with some basic modern upgrades and was amazed at how much fun it was. Probably get a 306 in AU for less than a 205 however.

@@ZagatoZee A 205 GTi is iconic, and ive seen some epic builds with them. Another interresting build might be a 405 4x4, though im not sure if they have had them, and the awd isnt all that strong apparently. A 3.0 V6 406 coupe or sedan would be pretty epic as well, but there isnt a big aftermarket for the engine. Either way, it would be super interresting with MCMs twist on it
The air box can come out as one piece, don’t have to remove the cover first. There’s not much room to spare, but it’s possible. Also makes it a lot easier to change the air filter. (Just a tip for the future, I work on these cars daily)
Funny engineering. Airbox comes off the throttle body just pulling it, and replacing filter needs unscrewing about 10 screws. :D
I spotted that the air box on ours had not been seated back down properly after its last service. Looked for ages to see how to tighten it back down 🤦♂️ then see a video on servicing
@@tdmtam yeah, just push it down haha. The little rubbers on the bottom can wear out and it becomes loose, but it’s not very common
@@pikadkalsarid yeah it’s funny right? On some models that use the same filter there is a screw on the front instead of a rubber. Always have to check, because otherwise you break the plastic haha.

People out here in Brazil love to modify these, there are lots of projects due to the low cost and what you can get out of it without spending too much money, you guys should check out the TR1 VW UP from Tork One, they reached up to 200whp on these little things. Anyways awesome project!

I have one from 2012 and love. I have the VW up white and has lovely alloys. It's also has chrome mirrors. You'd be so jealous. Their is wrap stuff I like for it. Do the plastic boot protector. Well worth it.
actually here in argentina we have a pretty decen scene of modified vw up. Specially with the up pepper (the southamerican version of the gti) with the 1.0tsi. With basic mods (downpipe, full exhaust, and intake) they go up to 150hp pretty easy. And on a 950kg car it makes it a pretty fun hothatch. I´ve seen the giving a hard time to stock civic si´s. There is also a huge market for suspension parts.

In Denmark, this is the most seen cars on the roads ! Small city streets in the major cities, it's very cheap 15.000 $ for a new one. (Cars are very expensive here) It's realiable, and can go pretty far on a full gas tank. I my self have the facelifted version of this, and I love it !
Here at Brazil we got the turbo one (1.0 TSI), It came with 105cv for the factory and people managed to get it to 140cv+ with remaps

I don't know what options you guys have in Oz, but where I thought the Up!'s had unique engine and boxes my Skoda mechanic friend assures me they're exactly the same as 1L skoda and polo's if you want to get turbo'd easier.

A new complete turbo 1.0 engine for the UP! is going for around 3.900 AUD (direct conversion) here in Brazil from Volkswagen. A used one, also complete is around a third of that.
A new 1.0 turbo gearbox is 790 AUD directly from Volkswagen. Maybe there's a way? You guys might know someone
We had one of these about 8 years ago as a company fleet car. We called it the S’up (the business is called S group...)
The rotors wore out before the break pads, and it seemed to have a heavy fly wheel which carried a lot of inertia, so if you dropped the clutch a bit at higher than matched revs, it would lurch forwards
To get the air filter out you just need to unscrew the front bolt, then pull up the whole thing. Once out you can unscrew the rest of bolts with much more space.
JP Performance from Germany crammed a 1.8t + AWD in there. It was a cool car too.

As a VW specialist, I can say that.
I got my mother to buy one of those, so she didn't have to call me every week to complain about there being something wrong with her car.
Here is my official suggestion for naming this project car: "Thumb's UP!". This project really made me "Wake Up" and see how much fun it is to watch MCM guys get "Revved Up" over their cars. Once this thing gets "Tuned Up", I can't wait to see you guys get it "Fired Up". Its a lot like when Super Mario gets a "Power Up'...I could go on and on about this project too, but it appears that "Times Up".
Here in Portugal, the Up! is a very common choice, since it has a fair good quality on the build, with low tech stuff (most of people doesnt use properly the gadgets, so it's nice), with a nice engine and good gas/km.
People dont modify them here, but those who did juts put some wheels spacers, new rims, dual tip exhausts, lower suspension, hybrid turbo, ecu tuning and that's it.
Far as I know, that engine, with a little work, can double the factory power (68hp to 130hp). Atention to the gearbox, she doenst like the extra power...

We rented one in Copenhagen in Denmark and drove it to Stockholm and all round Sweden. Was a great little car and did it easily.
Call it the UP-start! Its a bog standard econo car. With mods and a big block engine swap it will surely shake up the establishment on the road. The VAG UP-start!

Literally just a few minutes ago finished installing an exhaust system on my car and had to spend like an hour with the dremel to get some of the holes to line up and the whole time I could hear moog's voice in the back of my head saying "it bolts straight on, Martin!" 😂😂😂

Always makes me happy to see an Up GTI on the road (which is frequently here in Germany), as they really are fun little cars. And it makes me no less excited to see this one getting where it needs to be.
Even with this episode only doing the most basic things, it is the appreciation of this quirky stuff that makes mcm to what it is. Love it!
And also: "Geht Up!" (pronounced the same as the German term "geht ab" roughly translating into "it's awesome").
It'd be a very niche name for the car that but still... it would fit on an Aussie number plate :D
Jp Performance in Germany did a 1.8t, 4wd swap on an Up! and Upped the power to about 400bhp.
Kept the stock steelies, wheel covers and stock height.
That’s a sleeper.
Although it does not have German Tüv 😕
