We were given this car during a rental deal and drove it around 2 months. It surprised us in all the aspects of space, handling, fuel efficiency, driving experience and enjoyment. We used it as a family, with our 3 yo boy and his little stroller, and it satisfied us all in both in-city and long drives...those rear windows was a big security relief even, as our boy keeps opening windows to lean outside. Long story short, I would buy one without a second thought (btw, we own an Octavia but still loved this little cute buddy)
The Up (and its sisters) are head and shoulders above any other car in the class when it comes to build quality and drive. The 75ps engine pulls great in this little car and the 90ps gets it really shifting. The suspension and steering are far more refined than you'd expect. I bought a top spec one for my daughter and I used to nick it for any short journey. Funky, cleverly designed, well built. Even giving it a bit...it always returned around 50mpg on short journeys. Brilliant little car.
Did any of you find the Easter Egg? It was the music playing on the stereo @6:43 - the theme tune from the movie 'Up'. Fun fact: in order to lift this VW up! from the ground, you'd need to attach it to approximately 71,500 average-sized helium balloons. So now you know.
Recognized the music and appreciated it. Cute car - clever front bumper design and like the phone interface. Printed dash is nice, too. It doesn't take leather and carbon fiber to be distinctive.
I have this car and I recommend it! It is cheap and small, but it drives really well. Choose the engine with the turbo if you're driving on the highway.
I've had an up! about a year. Love it! (it has stop/start) Very Eco, and for its size very practical. When we camp as a family we take both cars as have a new shape polo too. All the camping stuff for 5 goes into the UP! with the seats down! (large 6 man tent and poles, all chairs, sleeping bags, blow up beds, cookers and gas and 2 tables. It's also great fun to drive. We are so happy with it on many levels.
@Ibi many. I know people who have had them last years. Ive also had vw of different ages for the last 20 years and northing has compared to them for robust and reliability so I don't buy into the negativity around them after my experiences. Members of my family have also had vw or audis and recent years skoda and they've all found the same as us.
Yeah. Because the Miles Per Gallon in the U.K. is different from the Miles Per Gallon used in the U.S. because they are different fricking gallons! How about England just starts using Miles Per Liter... They don't even officially use Imperial Gallons for anything, anymore.
I watched 20 of his reviews but I'm still not sure what miles per gallon translate in metric. Putting 60 miles per gallon in Google it says 3.9l per 100km, but that is quite efficient, like really efficient. I have the 2015 model and in the city I normally do 4.8l per 100km.
I've got an Up! and it's brilliant - you really do not need any other car. It's fast enough and well-built and nice and easy to drive. Can't complain. Well, apart from the 60bhp is sometimes not enough. It is slow if you are in the wrong gear, that's for sure. So I want a Tsi asap. Nice review, by the way.
connor plaksin actually no, volkswagen is around 40 years late or something from being the first, ford is around their third scandal, its just because volkswagen is german so we have to pretend is evil. (i m not german btw)
Victor Rykowski Start stop literally cuts the engine out every time you stop, as soon as you stop. Might save a little bit on fuel but just wears out the starter motor. It’s not necessary and very annoying.., that’s what wrong with start stop
Victor Rykowski You can turn off start stop , but have to turn it off every time you start the car again, and it’s easy to forget sometimes especially when most cars have the button to turn it off far away from the ignition or actual engine start button
I bought this car new 2015 for my wife (Move Up model with all extras, paid 15,000 euros, white, four doora) and it is honestly fantastic car in every sense, strongly recommended! I drive big petrol fast cars all my life (Merc E, Audi A6, old Saab Aero, Golf GTI was the weakest i had) so i am not diesel or Hyundai driver so to speak.
I have one. Had to change the steering column right when I bought it. 4 years later the rear brakes were gone and the front ones still are quite bad. I dont think the mpg is that bad honestly. I've done maintenance.
As a former owner of Volkswagen Up! i have to say that by far the MOST annoying thing about that car is rear shelf which doesn't fall when you close a boot door. If you owned an Up you know what i mean.
Patryk Wisniewski got good news for you, I've had one (2015) and they fixed that, the shelf does come up and fall down, and there is even a light in the boot ;)
Yes, they fixed in the facelift. And if that's the most annoying thing, then things are pretty good, don't you think? ;) Still the best small cars after 8 years.
I have a few notes to add for people looking to get an Up! The maps and more phone mount is free when you get a High Up! model, regular MPG for my own TSI is over 65 mpg and 2018 UP! TSI come with stop/start.
My new 2018 Move Up 59hp, is the first petrol driven vehicle ive owned, where its possible to achieve the claimed fuel efficiency figures claimed by Volkswagen in everyday normal driving. VW claim my car can achieve around 64mpg on the combined sycle, well i have achieved that figure, and even improved on it as well. The car is superb on long journey's and is a great car to own,
This car looks like the ultimate small delivery car if you're anywhere outside the USA but I bet it would be extremely diffucult to drive it in USA because of all the ''huge'' cars, trucks, SUVs etc...
Best car I ever owned. Tuned the 60HP version to 75HP and it revs very enthusiastic in the limiter at 60MPH. Still prefer free revving NA engines. EIBACH springs, less flexible rubber (Audi TT) in the steering, 195 sport tires, Focal Combo speakers, and you really have a fantastic little car. Drove 148.000km's now. Maintenance: €600. In total, excluding a set of tires and brake disks (unbalance) of €80,- and half an hour of work and tuning of course. Roundabout fast car killer. Almost as much fun as my MX5, nothing beats RWD. More fun than my Golf GTI.
5:43 I don't know if you missed it. Our UP has a compartment for the tools, triangular safety reflector and the first aid kit under the bottom cover. It's made of fairly hard Polyurethane foam.
Nikola Nikola they do... this particular model does at least. You can get a port injected 1.0 without turbo or a direct injected 1.0 with turbo (same engine as in the Polo, Golf, T-roc,...)
Actually that infotainment system is pretty neat. I've got the Discover Pro in my Golf, which is something like 2500 Euro (so 1/4th of an up!), and the screen has a much lower resolution than my phone, the system is a bit slow etc. Yes, it is still superior to putting a phone in there, but not by much. Certainly not by 2500 Euro. Plus if you want a big screen, get an affordable tablet. I don't know what sizes the mount supports, but it's a smart, affordable alternative to built in infotainment systems. And it's not like Mercedes interiors look like someone just glued an iPad in there. Might as well get a real iPad and benefit from the better screen etc.!
It's a VW so half the comments are filled with anti VW bullshit and racial slurs against the Germans. Absolutely pathetic. But they do say jealousy is a human trait. People can't stand how successful VW are, even through the so called diesel gate scandal. Consumers dont care. The product is too good.
Oliver Newell my experience of VW's over the past couple of years has been truly shocking. Don't get me wrong I drive a mk2 golf now however ending up on the side of a motorway 5 times in 6 months in a brand new 2014 polo having had it "repaired" under warranty each time really isn't that great from them. Family buys Japanese now and haven't had a problem 👍.
You have switches from a golf and everything is solid. Have you heard the door thunks on these or the fit and finish of the car itself? Nothing can touch it in its class. Not t mention refinement. There is a reason why Ford and PSA tried to sue Volkswagen for the Up when it came out lol 😂😂😂😂
I had this car (facelift) for one year and I have to admit it felt very grown up, was pretty spacious for being such a small car and was extremely refined. The engine was a n/a port injected engine with no modern technology, so even though it was a little rough, I'm sure it's reliable and it was surprisingly good at keeping up with traffic! Put its power out way better than any of the other small engines they put it city cars and didn't need a crazy amount of revs to keep up on the highway at 120 km/h. Handled very well as well! The only thing that was absolutely horrible was it's single clutch automatic gearbox. They could've put a DSG in here (smart/Renault did it) or get a better single clutch one. PSA has a very smooth single clutch gearbox. That was the only thing that ruined the driving experience a bit.
Speaking of no air con, if you had to keep either car as a daily driver for a year, (even through the summer) would you rather have a base model VW up! that doesn't have air conditioning or... a G-Wiz electric car?
I can't fault our VW Up, our's is only 60ps but does a great job for the price paid. We had a better specced Corsa LE before but the Up feels like a better car in our opinion. Based on the GF's Up, I went on to order an Up GTI.
Christopher Reed i have the VW up to and put on it 160.000 km and is still like new! big like for the up GTI...fun to drive but daily low cost of gas and insurence!
Honesty as my second car (first was a Toyota aygo) I love this car. Cheap, comfortable (even though I’m 6’4) and as an extra the sound system is excellent
I would consider pop out rear side windows a distinct advantage...............I haven't had those since my Renault Fuego and a feature I appreciated after also having them in a Mk1 Cortina GT.......probably before Mat was born!!!
Hi Matt. I was told that the Start/Stop feature ruins the ignition motor and isn't very good for the engine either. Is this true? I have it in my car but always turn it off.
Matt, does the UP ride like the Passat B7? I have one and it drives quite horribly and the seats are quite bad. I am 186-187cm tall or around 6ft1. Please, let me know if it is a good alternative for switching the car.
Typically City car. The best smol lovely car in big City . Germanian technology. So if you don't have big family and don't live in the farm , invest in Wolskwagen UP automatic and 4 doors 🤠.
I just test drove a 2014 CNG ... The Gas Shower Thingy was in the blue range ... The revs kept on going up without an increase in power when I put my foot down a little bit .... Is it a feature to conserve fuel in the blue range , or is there something wrong ??? Its getting Cold !!!
Stop start doesn't make sense on a 1l engine anyway - it would take 10 hours at idle to use 1 gallon so in city at 45mpg, 18mph average and 18% idle time the saving is (up to) 4.5%.
I know the cars are similar but would you ever do a Skoda Citigo review as I am considering buying one as a first car for a 17 year old but am not sure if it will suit well

Oh look, people hating on VW, tho most of them have never even driven the car. A usual day in the carwow comment section.
Martin Alexander There is the price, emissions scandal and the UP needs your phone for a screen! and 42mpg is poor.
I'm Your Huckleberry Almost every car company has been involved with an emissions scandal. Volkswagen just happened to get caught first.
ford cars can burn, the brand already has 3 massive emission device scandals and no one cares. haters are haters

The parcel shelf can be stored in a slot behind the rear bench rather than on the boot floor.
Planning on this for my first car, but the 2012 version. Hopefully the High Up! but I'll take a Move Up! happily.
I have just bought my first car and it’s a 2015 Up! Picking it up next week... I can’t wait! It’s such a lovely little car 😊
My first car - 2019 vw high up. I want to keep it forever while my mates wanna get rid of their cars. Shows how good the up really is
