This should have been a video about how content creators can use various filming and editing techniques to make viewers think legitimate businesses and the hard-working people within them are scammers when they're not. I particularly enjoyed how the bank's antifraud service was the result of Moog's user error and entering an incorrect name. Still, we were led to believe something nefarious was going on. Bravo.
Thanks for being honest about the dealership not being a scam in the end. But, still be careful. I saw another comment mentioning that it could just be a money laundering operation instead... Love the show and will continue to watch it but just be mindful of the possibility that selling cheap cars with e-transfers, it would be pretty easy to move vast amounts of money around and launder it if needed...
Very rich Asians in China, Singapore, Korea etc, will send their kids to top universities overseas to get their education. While the kids are there, they buy near/brand new cars because they are so much cheaper than in their home country. When they leave for home, they sell the car for dead cheap because they don't care about the money. Those are the unbelievable deals you see sometimes that appear to be scams. I'd say the dealer in this case knows where to get leaving-the-country cars.
This is legit the secret sauce in the states. Go to a college town and buy a week before graduation - but be very careful, because a whole lot of them have never gotten a single oil change because they know they are going to be thrown away.

I had a bloke buy a car off me during Covid. He was in Hobart and I was in Sydney. He had a mechanic check it over, transferred the cash into my bank account. Waited for me to confirm it was in my account and then organised a truck to come pick it up. I couldn't believe it! I felt scared on his behalf and he was buying from me!
I did something similar during covid. Wasn't allowed to travel to inspect car so the whole deal was made over the phone from the details amd photos. Paid a deposit sent a tow truck and said once you send me a picture of the car on the tow truck I'll send the final payment and that's how it was done. Luckily the car was 4k under value cause it wouldn't start thanks to a broken fuse. Another guy bought a motbike from nz and paid me to deliver 4hrs away for when he came on holidays he had a bike to ride and then gave to his son when finsnhed.
I had a guy in Northern Scotland take a taxi to Inverness Airport, and fly to London, to pick up my 2008 declared previously crash damaged (I declared this on the advert and the fella was happy with it) Seat Leon - all the way to Southend airport, around 500 miles away. It was only a £2000 car but I had to confirm that he knew it wasn't like an Audi R8 or something but just a 1.9 TDI Seat Leon. He drove it back upto Scotland and it took him over 8 hours to drive back. He paid £1000 deposit via bank transfer and I thought to myself I'd never take such a monumental risk and find one closer to home, they're not exactly rare cars. He was ecstatic with it!
@garthor Corruption is probably one big reason, especially in developing nations, corrupted authorities and scammers end up making those places scam central. Even with expose from scambaiting channels, the police in those places did nothing. Even if action was taken, it's all just for show. Scammers were tipped to go into hiding ahead of time, and when the storm dies down, it's business as usual, or they'll just keep on scamming as a different entity. An endless cycle.
It's absolutely looked into. It's just really hard to enforce because it often crosses international borders. And in some countries the law enforcement is bought and paid for. So even if it is looked at in the location the scam occurs, it's not enforced where the scammer is
@@stephensteele3553 Corrupted officials and scammers go hand in hand in making these regions scam central. Sometimes the officials are directly involved too, cheating both international and locals. No matter how many expose videos done by those scambaiting channels do, the police won't do anything. They would only take action if there is media pressure, and even that is just a PR song and dance, as often those involved are tipped off in advanced to go into hiding. Once the storm dies down, it's business as usual.
as someone who just sold there car on marketplace in sydney, the amount of people that were trying to scam me was absolutely crazy. ( also had scammers from Carsales )
Its ridiculous everywhere. I used to deal with it flipping cars here in the states. I also live in a little podunk town in Ohio. You wouldnt think it would be so bad in smaller areas but it is literally everywhere.
Great topic guys. FYI - a few months ago I contacted Facebook themselves to try and get a scammer blocked...and was told on many occasions that there was nothing wrong with the ad (or many ads).
MOOG! We bought a car from the same lot about 6 months ago. I recognized the guy straight away. In our case he wasnt much help but the main dealership did the sale for us. We picked up the cheapest JL Wrangler Rubicon in the country at the time. As you were sus so were we.. We did all the same checks and felt quite nervous. The only reason we didnt walk away to be honest is that the i am very familiar with these Jeeps and have built one up myself. I knew where to look and and what to ask. The dealer knew nothing about the vehicle. We have built my mates JL into a big rig and its running flawless. Risk it to get the biscuit. Well done on the episode!
its just same here in the Philippines, all you have to do is to find the real owner and mostly the real owner sell's the car in smaller amount than the others. I also ask my friend who's in Australia to buy me your merch's and she agrees...I can't wait to wear those shirt. I'm a fan here in the Philippines. I just love cars and your modifications and actually learning from you guys❤
I live in Germany and I found a car in Finland. Nothing unusual. The car was on German plates. Perfect. But. The "owner" works on an oil rig and he needs to get rid of the car, and that's why it's 30% cheaper than the others with same age, mileage, etc. So I told him that I will be in Finland in two days to check the car. Never heard from him again.
As a Finn, why would you buy a car from here? We salt our roads and the cars get used a lot since the distances are long. Some of us buy cars from Germany, because they are better equipped, less driven and in better condition.
@@DG_427 because it was an "Invincible" package on an Hilux. And on "german plates". So the "owner" left it there when he went to "work on an oil rig". And as I work for a car transporting company, transport would not be a cost for me.
@@DG_427 We also have salt on the roads for at least 5 months of the year. Also I'd rather buy a car with 150 000km on the clock that has been driving long distances, than a car with 90 000km that has only been driving short trips. Btw I thought you guys have less or no salt on the roads and drive with spikes 🤔 What I can definitely tell you though is: the warmer it is, the worse the salt becomes. When it's significantly under 0°, the salt tends to stay solid and not get so slushy. In most regions in germany the temperature doesn't stay below 0 for long time spans. So winter is pretty wet here. The salt mixes with the melting snow (that already melts without the salt) and you have a brown salty slush on the roads for about 4 months. Since climate change started to kick in the winters in germany (or at least my region) are terrible.

“Fake buyers offer to buy the car, often with minimal questions and without inspecting the car first.” Isn’t this the MCM car buying rules according to Moog?
At 12:11 when Moog says "Do you know what we need to do". I was fully expecting him to say "buy it now sight unseen". Was actually surprised he went to look at the car.
I constantly report facebook marketplace accounts that have duplicate listings with extremely low prices/kms and have yet to have one single one actually removed
There are obvious scam sellers with too good to be true prices, often for motorhomes, with dozens of listings for different vehicles and all the photos are stolen from other advertising sites. Reporting to Facebook is useless.
Same man. My dad's car got written off recently so I had to spend hours and hours on FB Marketplace trying to find him a new one. I saw sooooo many cars advertised as "great condition, blah blah, clean title, no liens", which is obviously a scam as we don't tend to use the terms like "clean title" in the UK. Like you I would report loads of these listings as scams (and almost every account was clearly a compromised account from a real person locally) but every time FB would get back to me with some generic reply like "we checked out the listing and found it didn't violate our community standards".

Tip for the parts buyers: when looking to buy used parts and they send you a picture, scan it with google lens. You will soon find out if its a picture taken from the internet and then probably is a scam
@@neilrobertson1345 Its an app you download on your phone and when in the app, you can scan anything with it such as a photo and it will show up relevant or similar photos online

He never heard from him again. 300 bucks down the drain. I asked dad to send me the pics and I put them through google reverse image search and sure enough found the item for sale in Spain 🤣
I always live by the rule " if somethings to good to be true , it most probably is". One of the best things about being computer illiterate is that you can't be ripped off by people asking you to send them money for something as you don't know how. For those reasons I will never buy a vehicle unless I can check it out in person.
In smaller european countries the issue is becoming more in person: Example fake cops, they knock on your door and explain your identity has been stolen and they are investigating it. They take all your details!
12:20 It’s reassuring that, even after 16 years working together, you guys are in no danger of knowing what each other is thinking, let alone finishing each other’s sentences! 😂
The common one I've seen recently is suspect kilometres . Now, being able to check the last 3 rego check kilometres in Nsw, there were many cars that had 3 rego checks within weeks of each other, disguising the real kilometres. Called out few sellers asked why 3 rego checks in a month and they all promptly blocked me
Unfortunately new cars don’t have rego checks for 5 years so something as new as this mini don’t have any odometer readings recorded on service NSW (I did a check on this mini while watching) It works well for older cars though
Yeah I heard about this type of scam as well. It's so damn scummy, and even worse that it works. The site should let you see all the readings, not just the last few.
after seeing how easy it is to wind back kms on most modern cars I always judge a car based not on mileage but on its physical condition as its presented to me, also wear depends hugely on how the car was driven and how it was cared for. you can have something that was abused for 100,000km but then there's another really tidy example with 300,00+ and you'd never be able to tell it had that high of kms by its condition
The main thing to take away from this is: research research research. And also be prepared to take an L cause everyone has a plan til they get punched in the face. But, when the stars align hopefully you'll be left with a nugget of gold and not a pile of shit.
Sometimes its worrh the risk. I got an Alfa romeo 159 for £300 because it had been up for two months and looked sooooo fishy. Its was a guy selling it for another guy but it was stored somwhere else. But after risking it and going to view it twice i low balled and he accepted. Been a year now and the cars faultless. Full red leather interior. Every optional extra. Been the best deal of my life so far.
The thing is though losing £300 isn't really a life changing amount if it's a scam for 99.99% of car buyers - it sucks for sure, but your credit rating isn't going to get hammered, your lifestyle isn't really going to change too much. I'd take that gamble as well. But once once you get to £5000, £10000 or even higher average joe is going to take time recovering.
Thank you guys for clearing a few things up, I'm currently looking for a car and see so many dodgy looking ads it's unbelievable. I'm a bit less anxious about it now
re: bank transfer names not matching - i transferred money to mate for concert tickets. i put their nickname in the "account name" section, and before it even let me transfer the money it popped up and said "this name isn't what people usually call this account, are you sure?" which was cool
The fact that Australia has had this kind of protection on money transfers for over 10 years is great. I first got a letter from the bank telling me the money has been put in hold until I can verify the account details and it will take two weeks to clear once I confirm it's correct or incorrect
While I was getting scammed (sadly, bastard pulled it off), while sending money tranfer my bank didn't even let it out at all. The second I pressed send it was returning some error. Sadly error was something vague like "Unable to execute" but later when it finally dawned at me what has happened, I concluded that his account must've been blacklisted and system was trying to protect me.
Great work calling this out. There are so many cars (and other items) that are being sold like this. Sad that this is not being addressed by the authorities. I did buy a cheap 3 series BMW with an N55 during Covid lockdowns from Victoria only relying on pictures and descriptions. It was through a legit auction house. Thankfully, it was legit and is a good car.
Pretty sure this was just an excuse for Moog to buy a mini making us think it was a video about a scam, so he has a valid excuse for buying and owning it.
There’s another one doing the rounds in the UK, the buyer asks you to get a vehicle report and suggests a website to use. You pay the money and get no report!!!
Yeah, I had that twice here in Australia.. One .EU page and one somewhere else. $55 bucks to do it. When I asked and mentioned that VicRoads has one similar for $30 , they said something along the lines of, this is is the best site, blah blah blah. I had the sob stories of them being ripped off with other cars.. I didn't do it, but I wrote back saying I did and it failed with a repairable write off.. They then said, eh, I don't want it now. HAHAHA
I recently sold a car and I had one potential buyer who asked seemingly genuine questions then send me a link to get a roadworthy through a particular company. Seemed odd so I did some research and the website was only a few days old. Yeah nah.
Marketplace is just trash. Never tried to buy anything because selling has always been such a nightmare. Not even scammers. Just trash people doing trash things.
I tried selling on Marketplace once. And I attempted to sell one of my tech gadgets, following the average price of other postings. Massive waste of time. What I got was just a bunch of people messaging "Is this still available", only to never hear back for them when I replied. And then there was this one guy desperately trying to lowball me. Kept sending a message saying "I'll give you cash for this, close the deal right now" almost everyday even after I ignored his messages. Gave up and took the listing down. To be honest, what can we expect if Marketplace is easily accessible to the users of a massive brain rot platform. Whatever good online sales page local to you, best just to stick to that. At least they're made by and for the people who knows how online sales platforms should work.
Sold my VW Amarok recently through Trademe, a New Zealand website which is similar in ways to eBay. Within 24 hours of listing the vehicle, I had several scammers contact me who wanted to inspect the car. After they asked basic questions, they then demanded I pay for an online vehicle history check from a dodgy website based in India. The website required a VIN number, and claimed to generate a report after entering credit card details. Yeah...nah. Would love to see a video that exposes car parts scammers. The kind that pretend to have parts for sale...but don't. And those who clone Facebook pages of legitimate companies, then use photos from other countries of stock / parts.
I was selling a car last year and had the same thing, trademe and facebook marketplace. Multiple different people with the exact same copy paste message. Didnt even click the link, told the first couple to fuck off and then just ignored the rest

I love how you talk about dodgy buyers, that buy quick and sight unseen.... When that's exactly the kind of buyers you are 😂😂😂 Some excellent advice in here 👌👌👌 it's a bloody minefield!! But the simple truth of being honest both as a buyer and a seller, just be a decent person. It's not that hard to make the world a better place 😊 And 'Danger.... To manifold' was brilliant 😂
My favourite type of scam is when you’re looking at a car with a combustion engine and you see in the description “good on electric” 😂😂 At least that’s a popular one I’ve seen in the UK on Facebook marketplace when I was trying to buy a jaguar XF from around 2010 lmao
My dad had a BMW Mini. Silk green, black roof. It was great fun when it worked. Reverse sorta fell out, got that fixed. Rear hatch latch failed, got that fixed. Electric throttle randomly failed to open, dealer couldn't figure that one out. He ended up selling it and buying an old Triumph instead. Similar reliability, but easier to work on. I think his was the first year, though--hopefully they've got their shit together since. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours!
Canada has something called a UVIP (used vehicle information package) that must be supplied by the seller legally but we can also use Carfax... Usually Carfax is for if you want to be extra certain you're getting a good car. UVIP is a legal requirement but it's also one of the last steps.
3:01 you forgot "too poorly made". The engine bay and interior of the modern mini is... just about the most disappointing interior i've ever been or worked on (cousin of mine had the misfortune of brain damage to buy one). The modern mini is the definition of "made to appease to old fame". It's probably an even bigger scam than the ones presented in the video given the fact that BMW had 170% the ability, know-how, and monetary power to put proper guts in the shells (which don't look too bad). And i mean, i can get it being as big as it is, but i cannot forgive just how bad it is under the thin veneer of "old mini". For shame.
I don’t man I own a 2015 Cooper S and I love it. I also owned a gen 2 and while it was a great handling car, the reliability was complete ass. I’m coming onto 100000 miles on my mini and hasn’t had one issue besides regular maintenance. I wish I was able to get my hands on a gen 1 lol

Scamming really needs to be more looked into as a crime. Its absolutely everywhere
That's the problem really... there's more money in scamming than catching scammers, which means there's more scammers than people catching them...
So even if it is looked at in the location the scam occurs, it's not enforced where the scammer is
Internet and online shopping sure has made scamming a real issue
@@stephensteele3553 Corrupted officials and scammers go hand in hand in making these regions scam central. Sometimes the officials are directly involved too, cheating both international and locals.
No matter how many expose videos done by those scambaiting channels do, the police won't do anything. They would only take action if there is media pressure, and even that is just a PR song and dance, as often those involved are tipped off in advanced to go into hiding. Once the storm dies down, it's business as usual.

@@DG_427 Depends on the car, rare JDM's you might not have a choice.
Btw I thought you guys have less or no salt on the roads and drive with spikes 🤔
What I can definitely tell you though is: the warmer it is, the worse the salt becomes.

I always live by the rule " if somethings to good to be true , it most probably is". One of the best things about being computer illiterate is that you can't be ripped off by people asking you to send them money for something as you don't know how. For those reasons I will never buy a vehicle unless I can check it out in person.
In smaller european countries the issue is becoming more in person:
Example fake cops, they knock on your door and explain your identity has been stolen and they are investigating it.
Called out few sellers asked why 3 rego checks in a month and they all promptly blocked me
Unfortunately new cars don’t have rego checks for 5 years so something as new as this mini don’t have any odometer readings recorded on service NSW (I did a check on this mini while watching)
It works well for older cars though
@timsminigarage Yes, good point!
Yeah I heard about this type of scam as well. It's so damn scummy, and even worse that it works. The site should let you see all the readings, not just the last few.
after seeing how easy it is to wind back kms on most modern cars I always judge a car based not on mileage but on its physical condition as its presented to me, also wear depends hugely on how the car was driven and how it was cared for. you can have something that was abused for 100,000km but then there's another really tidy example with 300,00+ and you'd never be able to tell it had that high of kms by its condition
thanks for having a great clip on scammers.
also really great to see your mini again

The thing is though losing £300 isn't really a life changing amount if it's a scam for 99.99% of car buyers - it sucks for sure, but your credit rating isn't going to get hammered, your lifestyle isn't really going to change too much. I'd take that gamble as well. But once once you get to £5000, £10000 or even higher average joe is going to take time recovering.

re: bank transfer names not matching - i transferred money to mate for concert tickets. i put their nickname in the "account name" section, and before it even let me transfer the money it popped up and said "this name isn't what people usually call this account, are you sure?" which was cool

The website required a VIN number, and claimed to generate a report after entering credit card details. Yeah...nah.

Canada has something called a UVIP (used vehicle information package) that must be supplied by the seller legally but we can also use Carfax... Usually Carfax is for if you want to be extra certain you're getting a good car. UVIP is a legal requirement but it's also one of the last steps.
