  • Between 2022 and 2023, over 300 children in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Indonesia died after they consumed cough syrup. It sent shockwaves around the world. Investigations revealed toxic ingredients in them. Diethylene and Ethylene Glycol are deadly chemicals which should never be found in medicine. The cough syrups were manufactured by pharmaceutical companies in India and Indonesia. The manufacturing firms deny wrongdoing but, in the months to follow, the findings would open up a pandora’s box of dirty truths.

If you are manufacturing medicine, it’s your company's responsibility to test the raw ingredients BEFORE manufacturing the end product. The raw ingredient could be tainted during manufacturing, transport, storage, or industrial espionage. If you don’t want to do the test or buy the equipment to do so, then your company should not be in the drug manufacturing business in the first place. If testing is part of the cost to do that specific business, failure to take into account that cost will eventually lead to the downfall of the company. Lastly, my condolences to the families who have lost their children to this toxic medicine scandal.

Apparently, it's not their responsibility according to international standard of practices.
Not to say it actually should not be their responsibility of course, but that the international standard still haven't required them to be. Which is wrong and must be amended.

@@sastradana9222 if you have not watched the documentary in full or in detail, stop giving the wrong details to the public. It is clearly stated in the video (time from 25.00 to 26.00), it is MANDATED by GMP the mandatory testing of ALL raw materials... As such it is the clear-cut responsibility of the drug manufacturer, to test the raw materials as the risk of contamination is always there. Look making medicine is not rocket science, it is just mixing a batch of raw ingredients based on formulation and process control. It is not like aeronautical engineering where, you need specialized engineers, technological know-how, 8 axis tool set, and other manufacturing equipment to make a single turbine blade… All engineering trade requires passion in the job, and attention to the smallest details to deliver a successful product.

7:05 The toxin found in the children cough syrup was Diethylene Glycol, a powerful INDUSTRIAL solvent, used as a cleaning agent, used for degreasing, as a solvent, found in paints, fuels, adhesives. How could anyone be so evil to let children drink poison? It’s so heartbreaking especially for the families, to see their children suffer permanent kidney failure, health issues, death.

And it’s not only one company that switch their additives from the safe propylene glycol to ethylene glycol. There are two in india . There must be the same raw material supplier that encourage the drug company to switch for cheaper blend but end up deadly . Recent eye drop contaminated with P Aeroginosa causes 4 dead and 40 lost their eyesights here in the US . The eye drop was imported from india. I designed many pharmaceutical plant and current cGMP is to test all incoming raw material and test all outgoing product with sterility , stability and efficacy. Get your expectations right, cost cutting is bound to happen when a country is not rich enough, just like how poor people often do not have a insurance as they can't afford even the monthly payments.
And why would we take action against Adani? Are they favoured by Modi ? Yes. Did the supreme court find any counts of fraud during their hearings? No. Did the US courts find any fraud? No. Are adani companies profitable? Yes.

If you read the instruction, the composition says about propyleneglycole, which is ok to consume, but after several death cases it was rechecked and found ethyleneglycole, which you cannot even taste. Speaking with a farmacy worker in Kazakhstan, found out that this syrup had been in sale much time before the death cases arrived and there were no such cases. Only since 2022 came out such cases. So it makes to suppose that the first lot was made and checked according the norms, after the manufacturer changed the ingredient to make the product cheaper for him, but the new lot passed without new control, it means. So, the control of every lot is important.

Quality Control can only be performed by people/agents who work within the organizations and are able to whistleblow to the authorities without fear of any punishments by their employers. This can only be done if the authorities foot the bill and send these foot soldiers out into the field. And once the whistle blower sends the alarm, the people responsible for these faults must be made to pay very painfully (including mandatory imprisonment) for even attempting their vile acts. There is no better way. Because once the product is finished, it is very difficult to detect deficiencies/toxins in the product.

"On New Year’s Day, 4-year-old Isha Darboe died at the Edward Francis Small hospital in Gambia. She’d been dosed from a bottle of anti-nausea syrup that had somehow escaped the recall. Her father, Lamin Darboe, says he had heard about bad medicine circulating in the country, but a woman at the pharmacy had assured him this one was fine.
At his home in a fishing village on the Atlantic coast, Darboe lights a cigarette and scrolls through photos on his phone. There are dozens of Isha - showing off new dresses, posing with her younger brother, sticking her tongue out for the camera. She had been looking forward to starting school this year when she would have turned 5. He tears up when he recalls her final days in the hospital. Too weak to speak, she communicated with her father mostly by pinching him, he says. “She was dying in pain.”
He scrolls to another snapshot: a picture of the box of Maiden drugs that killed his daughter, an “M” logo indicating its maker. The liquid in the 100-milliliter bottle had completed an astonishing odyssey made possible by the pharmacy of the world, crossing seas and oceans to wind up in Isha Darboe’s mouth. National borders meant nothing - until it came time to determine what went wrong."

Because once the product is made, it is very difficult to detect deficiencies/toxins in the product.

A proper sampling will help to weed out bad batches or refuse sale of batches that have toxic medicines included in the batch. If even one is contaminated then the sale is off and the deal is off. I don't know HOW long such trials take, but even for small scandals, final incident reports and investigations can take many months, if not a year or two to finish.

And the mystery of what it even WAS, was only solved at the end of *last year* and the beginning of this year! There are *still* things being uncovered, investigated and found out *today*.

problem with regulation. FDA only reactionary. will only react when tragedy strikes. pharma companies also become very greedy, exchange life for profit.

We must not spare doctors they are the one who prescribe these cough syrups , pay them good kick backs they will prescribe even cow dung. They must be held accountable and punishment so that no doctors will dare to do this crime in future. They are let free and Scot free so these companies work hand in hand with them.

Another good reason for natural remedies. Healthy babies and toddlers who get sick, should not be given chemical medications. Give vitamins, nutrients and liquids to prevent dehydration. Let them run slight fevers, that’s the body doing it’s job of self healing. If the fever gets too high, give a cooling bath or wipe down skin with cool cloth. If a bad cough, put diced onion in socks and put on baby. The onion will relieve the cough.

@@perpetualanyanwu9567 just dice up about 3 slices and put half into a sandwich baggie on each little foot, then put a sock on to hold them in place.

The right answer is to use common sense. As this comment says, you do not necessarily need to treat every symptom - and whether or not onions in socks really works, it will not harm! But you need to recognize when your child needs to see a doctor and be willing to do it when needed.

Kindly do not prescribe onion as u deem fit. Ppl can follow this advise and face bad adverse effects. Also, fever above 38.5 degrees must be cooled down using proper medicine. U dont want to give wrong advice then someone's baby get nerve or worse health issues.

They should sue the indian government and the indian pharmaceutical companies. Both are complicit. Also countries should ban medication made in India. In many cases generic drugs made in india are not up to standard.

Not possible. There are good manufactures and bad manufacturers in India. If medicines from India are banned then world go into a serious problem of lack of essential affordable medicines.

That is why I don’t like buying generic drugs, the reason this drugs are cheap because the companies that made it don’t use the quality ingredients. This is now the result of cheap drugs and the greed of companies.
