With a new and illegal domestic supply, we reveal how this mercury is being used at thousands of mines and investigate how NGOs have found increased rates of children born with life-changing defects. We meet the miners and the people fighting for change and take viewers into the illicit mines that have been hidden from public view.
With Indonesia bound by international agreements to stop mercury usage by 2025, we learn what is being done to meet that target. We also explore some of the greatest challenges the country will face if it is to protect its citizens from this metal that becomes toxic when used in the wrong ways.

As an Indonesian i would to give applause and big thanks to CNA Insider for covering this matter. These individual gold mining is not only appears in Lombok but also in Sumatera, and Borneo. In my place (Sumatera) peoples often used revolver to cover their dirty job for these mines.

This topic is easily the most 'shadow banned' from our Indonesian government, as they don't want to show the true side of gold mining impact on local workers, aside from Indonesian government sell specific region full of gold (which wouldn't be named for obvious reason) to foreign investment in the 1980's. I spend alot of time with miners in Lombok and Sumbawa. They know the dangers. But poverty scares them more.
They're just trying to make a living, but they end up paying with their lives 😭 how often is this theme found all over the world.
the hard reality is they risk their families and the environment for a little bit of money, while the trader got the big chunk of their hardwork.
The miner get $1300 per ounce while the market price is $2000. So ya he is selling too cheap. But even if he got $5000 that’s still too cheap for his his family’s health plus all the other people his toxic vapor will affect negatively.
Jokowi is allowing this to happen on his watch? I’m shocked.

They don't care about the new generation, it's a corrupted country. Look at the case of a policeman committed rape on his 10 years old step daughter and he was only sentenced a year and ten months in jail.

I was born at Cambodia and exposed to Agent Orange chemical during the war. I’m in my 50 and have many health issues and my younger sister passed from cancer. Thanks and sad for them

We have the same in the Bay Area California, we have gold, silver, mercury. There's an area south of my city, San Jose, that's so contaminated you can't eat fish from there.
Same for parts of Idaho.
San Jose was one of the biggest mercury producers on the West Coast of California .From 1849 and on into the twentieth century mercury was mined there.Their newspaper is named the "San Jose Mercury News".The mines produced mercury for prossesing the gold coming out of The Sierras during the famed gold rush of 1849.Mercury made some men fabulously wealthy .Just as if it were gold itself.
And as far as fish go ,there has been a warning on mercury levels on practically all fish in SF Bay and rivers draining into it.Even in the ocean ouside of SF in the fish and wildlife eg seals, birds ,mullusks,abalone, etc.Traces of mercury in all.Along with pcbs.

At bare minimum, he should be chasing away the wife and children when he is burning off the mercury. And then he didn't even wear glove or anything.
And frankly, it is for the Indonesian government to deregulate and to encourage use of that other alternative that give them the gold yield.
It's in the air all around the house\village and in the water supply, crops they may grow and fish they may eat, having the wife and kid leave the immediate area is of no help.

I’m only halfway through, but I will say it truly is a shame that the island or land cannot speak for itself in the regulating or banning mining all together so it can continue to make gold and perhaps reserve the gold later maybe… bottom line is everyone is watching this happened and no one is regulating, and there’s nothing the land can do about it except produce less gold, and fall victim to worse habits that have it eventually leading to its demise and the misuse and demise of future generations to come up on it

Cinnamon is good for health but cinnamon from Indonesian and China are not good as it contain poison probably mercury. So is the popular aphrodisiac which is known as Tongkat Ali.
Best cinnamon is from Sri Lanka which not commonly available in local shop or market. Mostly available in high class Health Clinic.

This has nothing to do with China. Only Indonesian has the power and responsibility to regulate pollution and prevent toxins from entering their environment and food.
Do not throw away the mercury contaminated water from the ball mill. It can be reused over and over and over again. So you are not dumping mercury water back into the enviorment and you are saving water because you don't need new water everytime.
