  • In Indonesia which is Asia’s largest gold producer, informal gold mining is a crucial source of income for hundreds of thousands. But this once traditional livelihood hides a deadly secret that may be poisoning its most vulnerable residents and causing irreversible environmental harm.
We reveal the scale of Indonesia’s multi-million dollar trade in mercury, the toxic element used to extract gold from its ore. With a new and illegal domestic supply, we reveal how this mercury is being used at thousands of mines and investigate how NGOs have found increased rates of children born with life-changing defects. We meet the miners and the people fighting for change and take viewers into the illicit mines that have been hidden from public view.
With Indonesia bound by international agreements to stop mercury usage by 2025, we learn what is being done to meet that target. We also explore some of the greatest challenges the country will face if it is to protect its citizens from this metal that becomes toxic when used in the wrong ways.

As an Indonesian i would to give applause and big thanks to CNA Insider for covering this matter. These individual gold mining is not only appears in Lombok but also in Sumatera, and Borneo. In my place (Sumatera) peoples often used revolver to cover their dirty job for these mines.

Thanks CNA for uncovering this topic. This topic is easily the most 'shadow banned' from our Indonesian government, as they don't want to show the true side of gold mining impact on local workers, aside from Indonesian government sell specific region full of gold (which wouldn't be named for obvious reason) to foreign investment in the 1980's. Keep it up on making great content and uncovering truth!!

The miner get $1300 per ounce while the market price is $2000. So ya he is selling too cheap. But even if he got $5000 that’s still too cheap for his his family’s health plus all the other people his toxic vapor will affect negatively.
Jokowi is allowing this to happen on his watch? I’m shocked.

The economics and the poison are wrapped around each other like two big strong snakes. The solutions are sorely needed but the current realities are bitter barriers. The plight of the future generations must take center stage. 🔜👊🇺🇲 Kudos CNA INSIDER ❤

yeah... this is a lost cause. As long as corrupt officials still exist, and as long as the mindset of the people is "looking for short cuts" - because well, mining gold pays more than fishing, didn't he say that? So even if the government were to give him a job, as long as the pay is lower, he'll still go back to mining.
This is the mentality of many Indonesians, especially those who've already gone against all reason for money.
I know this. I'm Indonesian. Can't really educate a mindset, you've gotta change it and that will take generations.

The root is economic problem stated by Faturrahman. Economics can effectively shift human behaviour, more than education. Next is how to offer better income to everyone so everyone happily abandon mercury? It is next to impossible. Even if Locals-Owned-Legal Cooperative kind of company establish, it may be new breeding ground for corruption and bribery. 😢

San Jose was one of the biggest mercury producers on the West Coast of California .From 1849 and on into the twentieth century mercury was mined there.Their newspaper is named the "San Jose Mercury News".The mines produced mercury for prossesing the gold coming out of The Sierras during the famed gold rush of 1849.Mercury made some men fabulously wealthy .Just as if it were gold itself.

I’m only halfway through, but I will say it truly is a shame that the island or land cannot speak for itself in the regulating or banning mining all together so it can continue to make gold and perhaps reserve the gold later maybe… bottom line is everyone is watching this happened and no one is regulating, and there’s nothing the land can do about it except produce less gold, and fall victim to worse habits that have it eventually leading to its demise and the misuse and demise of future generations to come up on it

In actuality most Asean countries has ties with European powers much earlier than the current China government. Most has been colonies of western power before. However due to neglect from EU and expansion of China power in recent years, Asean has to be wary of China since they become a major player that's really close geographically.

@@Changforworks up ini benar sekali . Seharusnya @herifebi belajar sejarah bagaimana singapur bangkit dari keterpurukan. Kita sebangsa Indon harusnya belajar.

There's things we could do especially in a rich country like america Instead of giving all this money to Ukraine for war biden should be pumping money into helping the poor people around the world so that they don't have to do this kind of work and hurt themselves And not just their self but their family also Its very sad God bless them in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and savior 😢🙏🏻
