The levels from VS. Super Mario Bros. weren't taken from Super Mario Bros. 2, the other way around-- in fact, when they made Mario 2, the main inspiration for the higher challenge _was_ the handful of exclusive levels from VS Super Mario Bros.
What I find cool about the FamicomBox is that it uses NES cartridges despite or maybe even because it was exclusive to Japan (that could have made them want to use them because you wouldn't be able to play them on a regular Famicom that way, something they apparently didn't want you to do).

Same... Bros isn't a word. Its an abbreviation for the word Brothers, specially when used in a company name. Which is obviously the name of the Mario Brothers plumbing company. It grates on me when people say "bros*
@@mysticalbeing13 The cartridge says "Bros." with a period, which is pronounced "brothers". If it didn't have that period, then it'd be pronounced the way the person in the video was pronouncing it.
I couldn’t finish the video and came here to see if anyone else was talking about it. Hearing someone says “bros” out loud is not only wrong, but oddly disconcerting.
Ah, the part where you discuss Vs. Super Mario Bros. brings back memories for me. There is this brewery/pizza place my family sometimes goes to in San Clemente, and they have a tiny arcade there. It's mostly unremarkable stuff, but as late as 2013/2014, they had a Vs. Super Mario Bros. cabinet there, and I remember playing it years ago. Sadly, it must've broken at some point, because I recently found out they replaced it with a tabletop Pac-Man machine. Fairly interesting, but it's still no Vs. Super Mario Bros. :-(
As a Super Mario Bros. collector, I really loved this video, I was hoping someone made this video someday! I didn't know about the Famicombox one or the Syndrome one. Keep up the great work! I think the only version missing was the Nintendo Mini Classics from 98' (which is licensed and similar to the G&W anyways) and the Nelsonic Watch version.
Despite you not mentioning this in the video, there is a 2010 SEGA Genesis port of the original Super Mario Brothers game from someone by name of Mairtrus, as well as a Commodore 64 port/recreation fom ZeroPaige. However, the latter of which was hit with a DMCA takedown notice by Nintendo in 2019, despite ZeroPaige's C64 project taking about 7 years to make. Other than that, great video!
25:54 Mario had been to Russia! I grew up with the All Stars version of Super Mario Bros, so I'm always heartbroken to see that version of SMB1 to be hard to come by. I bought the Wii compilation just to be able to play the 16-bit SMB1 again (and SMB2, I already managed to get Super Mario Bros Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3).
Hey PatMac, even though it’s just a match-3 game, you won’t believe how many ports of Bejeweled 2 there are. There is SO many ports of what I consider the best match 3 game of all time.
Awesome video bro.. in the beginning of the video you touch on the Mario song, TH-cam “cocoa brovas - super Brooklyn” where Smif n wessun use the Mario beat to rap over, it’s really awesome.
I actually played the game in an arcade in the US around 1986. This was roughly around the time the NES got its national release. After playing it, the NES went to the top of my Xmas list.
Interesting side note to the Duck Hunt/SMB cart bundled.with the Action Set... in the UK at least is that it was slightly sped up when compared to earlier stand alone carts. Because it was faster it always felt more fluid and personally always found the game easier to finish using the DH/SMB version, especially once at world 8. By the early 90's the stand alone carts were also the faster version too.
IIRC it wasn't really that they were more powerful, but that they had hardware specialized for games that weren't really found in home computers. In terms of raw CPU power, AFAIK home computers were king but that didn't mean much due to having to do everything in software; slowing everything down. The Amiga actually had hardware designed for games to take advantage of, and that computer was where computer gaming was *at* until IBM-compatibles caught up.
One note about SMB Deluxe, the "Lost Levels" part of the game doesn't have the extra bounce Mario gets from jumping on enemies in SMB2/Lost Levels, so it's tough to beat 7-2 with Mario.
Mario dancing at 6:38 is so mario to me. I always picture him as that friendly chill dude that will help you unlike some cartoon animal that decided to DIE in the game's story.
As an Asian grew up playing all the games directly imported from japan, it is so interesting to see how Western gamer view those facts that seem to be so common during my childhood. Japan is definitely forging the gaming history in a unprecedented way.
I have the Sharp X1 version of Super Mario Bros Special (technically I have the other version as well but I don't play it because it's not very good), and I've played through it several times. There's actually quite a bit of creativity within the level design. I enjoy it.
Super Mario Bros Deluxe was my very first exposure to the original Super Mario Bros. It was actually mom's game I think but I played it almost as much as she did.
24:47 “…now try again” killed me. Btw, 25:58, if you’re curious, the first game says: “mario 3 around the world”, the game on the right says: “mario 4 space odyssey”, and both box arts have “Russian version” written at the bottom
I know Zelda would probably be the next logical one, but I'm curious about Kirby, or Pokemon ports, or even the original Pheonix Wright since I just started playing it, how many ports of those exist

@PurestBean Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) only contains seven Famicom games; Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Golf, Pinball and Tennis. Animal Crossing introduces twelve more Famicom titles, but with different methods to obtain the games.

I have always said Super Mario Brothers, not Bros. Hearing this over and over bothers me more than it should.
Same... Bros isn't a word. Its an abbreviation for the word Brothers, specially when used in a company name. Which is obviously the name of the Mario Brothers plumbing company.
It grates on me when people say "bros*
Paul Drybröugh though it says on the cartridge Bros.
@@paulpetroleum Super mario bros is how I will always say it.
The pure malice in your voice when you said, *NOW TRY AGAIN* is perfect.
Dude I was watching a smm2 1-1 remake and this came in my notifications
it's like 1-1 remakes are a common thing! wow!
I was not expecting to sit through 27 minutes of talking about game ports, but the history and screens for each game worked. Bravo !
25:54 Mario had been to Russia! Left one is translated like "Mario 3: Around the World" (probably, that was an adventure with a view to find some vodka) and the right one is translated like "Mario 4: Space Odyssey" (of course, after drinking vodka you may fell like in space and you may not remember where you are so you're going to have an epic odyssey)
You're gonna need vodka if you decide to play those
and a will of STEEL. i have been there....
And it's NOT pretty.
Yeah the Game Overs for Mario 4: Space Odyssey were creepy. There was one for basically every situation.
Wait, the SMB/Duck Hunt combo didn’t come out until *1988*? I always thought that combo was a launch release. Holy Mandela Effect, Batman!
9:14 the most underrated goomba, the fricken Mac tonight lookin goomba
14:00 I remember playing this on some flash website when I was younger. Ah, the memories
Did you notice the text at the 1-2 background?
Also did you know that at Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World Luigi's head was remastered
25:54 Mario 3: Around the World

looks like they haven't got a game over yet
@Figger Naggot 420 The game over screen is some stolen gory Mario fan art
This was an amazing video! Totally enjoyed it.
23:33 oh! It's a pegasus! That waa pretty much the polish equivalent of the nes and i live in poland! I was not expecting to see that!
Awesome video bro.. in the beginning of the video you touch on the Mario song, TH-cam “cocoa brovas - super Brooklyn” where Smif n wessun use the Mario beat to rap over, it’s really awesome.
The American Wii Shop Channel listed SMB's release day as October 18.
Wut
I grew up in the 90s playing Super Mario All Stars. I also played Super Mario Bros Deluxe.
im always hyped when your vids come out bro there epic
I actually played the game in an arcade in the US around 1986. This was roughly around the time the NES got its national release. After playing it, the NES went to the top of my Xmas list.
19:44 Mario: What neck?
Interesting side note to the Duck Hunt/SMB cart bundled.with the Action Set... in the UK at least is that it was slightly sped up when compared to earlier stand alone carts. Because it was faster it always felt more fluid and personally always found the game easier to finish using the DH/SMB version, especially once at world 8. By the early 90's the stand alone carts were also the faster version too.
Was it because they used the NTSC version, or was it altered to natively work on the PAL hardware?
Consoles being more powerful than PCs oh how things have changed.
@@LonelySpaceDetective doom and wolfenstein were some of the first PC games that consoles couldnt run
One note about SMB Deluxe, the "Lost Levels" part of the game doesn't have the extra bounce Mario gets from jumping on enemies in SMB2/Lost Levels, so it's tough to beat 7-2 with Mario.
I would absolutely love a version of this with the Donkey Kong ports. That's a game that has a crazy about of versions out there.
I love that you mentioned the mario and zelda big band album! It's such a classic but it feels like no one knows about it.
Up next: How Many Ports Of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (1992) Exist?
You satisfied?
Mario dancing at 6:38 is so mario to me. I always picture him as that friendly chill dude that will help you unlike some cartoon animal that decided to DIE in the game's story.
Since you covered Mario and Sonic ports. Can you see all of the ports of Tetris?
Are you trying to kill the man?
@@StCerberusEngel No... I just wondering on how many ports of Tetris are there. Hm... Probably too many.

As an Asian grew up playing all the games directly imported from japan, it is so interesting to see how Western gamer view those facts that seem to be so common during my childhood. Japan is definitely forging the gaming history in a unprecedented way.
I hear you. I grew up in the US but we imported a Super Famicom when we visited the homeland 😂
The Duck Hunt / Super Mario Bros cartridge is pretty cool
19:43 for an 'unaltered' mario rom, the plumber looks awfully like the hunchback of notre dam
The fact that the famicom box version uses a US style cartridge is the most interesting part
Maybe because it was a giant front-loading box
23:44 GRAND DAD
FLINTSTONES!?!?!
Learned a few new things from this video, great stuff, very detailed. 👍
I have the Sharp X1 version of Super Mario Bros Special (technically I have the other version as well but I don't play it because it's not very good), and I've played through it several times. There's actually quite a bit of creativity within the level design. I enjoy it.

I think you should do a lookback/history on the special websites made in promotion for Nintendo’s games of the 2000’s. I’d love it.

You forgot the bootleg Brazilian Super Mario All-Stars for Wii, which has a bunch of Mario games "remade" in the NSMBW engine.

super mario bros: hold my mushroom
Well it has more ports
Super Mario Bros Deluxe was my very first exposure to the original Super Mario Bros. It was actually mom's game I think but I played it almost as much as she did.

Watch this game play makes me realize how the game is meant to be played. Flawlessly.
0:22, You're telling me there's a difference with all of those? I swear over half of them are just the same thing.
