Erm, ackshually, the "fireball" in SML1 isn't a fireball; it's a Super Ball, and the "Bullet Bill" in Super Mario World's first level isn't a Bullet Bill; it's a Banzai Bill
From what I can remember, apparently the "start the level by falling" bit with SMB2US is due to how the story in Doki Doki Panic goes - with the world of the game taking place within a book, and the player characters falling into it. (This is also why the final world has one less level than normal - the last page was ripped out.)
@@fullmetalelegance The Mario version of the story says that Mario & friends went inside a cave with a long staircase which leads to a door, _which_ leads you to Subcon, and *might* also be why they fell down to it
@@jamessnedeker4799 maybe? the differences are big enough to maybe make them a different level. what about the other versions of the level from other games like the version in VS. Super Mario Bros.? those are pretty different too!
Just gonna say that the secret area with all the Munchers in the first Wario Land area is somewhere you're encouraged to return to later in the game, since beating the first world causes the tide to go in and floods two levels in Rice Beach/world 1 (1-1 and 1-3). You can then swim across to avoid taking damage. Unfortunately, the way the game is set up means that it's very easy to think you're meant to tank the damage or navigate around the seemingly impassable obstacles. So it kinda fails at the job it's meant to do. Regardless, nice video. Didn't always agree on the level placements, but for the most part they seem pretty reasonable.
@@fullmetalelegance There are actually several points in Wario Land where you change the levels' properties. (Also, 1-6 and 1-2 get flooded too IIRC.)
One thing about SMB 1-1: Koji Kondo deliberately wrote the ground theme to SMB in such a way that Mario's initial movements would usually sync up to the music. Jumping over the goomba and hitting the ? block specifically
38:52 In your defense though, the UP + B does blend into the background very well. Your eyes are likely more focused on the enemy throwing the coin, and then continueing to look towards the right side of the screen rather than taking in the UP+B that's hidden in the background. There is very minimal contrast, and the coin that the enemy throws even blocks the B part.
Warioland: Super Mario Land 3's 1-1 actually teaches something unique with the part where you get the dragon helmet and 3UP. Once you beat the first world, the tide comes in to Rice Beach (the name of the first world). If you go back to that level, the level changes to have more water, making it easier to access the dragon helmet.
19:04 This actually isn't the only time the level repeats level structure. Infact, every level in the game does it at least *once* I know sometimes it's on purpose, but I feel like there's something in the code that repeats it
It was a hardware limitation as the game was coded in 1988 before people knew how to optimize the game boy. Metroid 1 and 2 do the same thing in every area, just look at Metroid 1’s map in specific. They will actually repeat the same room 3 times in a row in one tunnel and also have the rooms above and below it be the same room again.
Also Mario 1 and 2(lost levels) do the same thing so him complaining about it comes off as him having never really played those games. They do it in at least half the stages and in those levels often repeat a section 3 times.
1:03:40 This coin trail aligns perfectly if you twirl without jumping, so maybe the point of it was to subtly show that you don’t always want to be as high as possible with the propeller suit. I have noticed everybody who plays this level jumps into the coin trail and overshoots it but I’m not sure how many players realized it was their mistake and even learned anything.
I find it so funny that the 3DS’s Mario game is called New Super Mario Bros 2, when calling it New super Mario Bros 3, makes more sense, because it is the third game in the series, but also New Super Mario Bros 3(DS) so it would make sense for the console it is on as well
I think SMB 3 makes it to S. Personal opinion of course. Teaching how Piranha Plants can now spit fire and even in multiple directions was a game changer from original. How you cannot just wait close by to those to go down the pipe but to get retaliated. Been like that since then. Also waiting for the koopa to move under you when you are standing on the white block can make you crouch while waiting and go behind the scene. That is where you figure out the secret eventually by replaying. Its how I figured it out at least. First I thought its just to bypass the goombas on the "runway". Best chance to find it in anywhere in the game is in 1-1. Oh yeah, and the end with koopa that forces you to jump to the end block is perfect if you are running teaching you how to get star card every time if you just run and jump.
The Star card is based on when the block spawns, by the way, so if your speed drops and you really need that 5up you have to backtrack a long way before the timing rights itself
The Cave Area with the chomping things in Wario land 1-1 is supposed to be accessible later after you drain the water in a higher area causing some levels to flood, like 1-1
28:13 those are clearly purple, not grey. (Specifically, they look periwinkle to me. For those arguing that periwinkle is a blue rather than a purple, you are welcome to fight me in the Trader Joe's parking lot.)
The falling start in SMB2 is to showcase verticality in levels which was a new feature not present in 1 or Lost Levels, which also explains the tree climbing section at the end of the level. I'm glad I kept watching the whole thing, and that the video is good, because the disdain towards SMB2 almost made me quit lol. Also Wario Land 1. The section with the munchers that "forces you to take a hit and lose the dragon helmet" is meant to be visited later when the tide covers half the levels in world 1 and changes the layout. That section gets covered in water allowing you to swim over the munchers.
Man, I love Mario games and I'm the biggest apologist for early games and their jank, but I just can't find any love in my heart or time in my life for the original Super Mario Land.
A lesson they tried to teach you in SMB2, but I don't blame you for missing, is that *how* you kill an enemy affects if it respawns or not. Use a small veggie and they respawn. Use a big veggie and they're gone for good.
1,000th sub btw :) i thought that this video was made by someone with thousands of subs and was shocked to see that you didnt even have 1,000. Had to change that real quick. Awesome video
Wow. That goes to show you how nice it would’ve been to have two pink berries in that level in Mario world. I’ve been playing Mario world since I was probably 6 years old and just today learned about the cloud if you eat two pink berries with yoshi. I thought I knew literally everything about that game with how much time I spent with it.
I gotta add that in super Mario 3 there is also a white platform which if you hold down long enough allows you to go behind scenery which is useful in later portions of the game
11:12 Has anyone said that the fall has more to do with showing you that you're in a nightmare rather than showing you a game mechanic? That would be my guess. That it's more story related than anything. Doesn't the ending reveal the entire game to be a dream?
Ah yeah, you right. What I meant by that is that it doesn't have music that gets faster or warns you that it has an end, it just ends after a bit (iirc) ((could still be wrong from when I made that recording)) (((thanks)))
They made skipping possible because you could not save in the older games. And yes, I play all levels in the mario games I buy. They are not very long.
1:10 you definitely need to play the full game, check out Endo’s latest SMG2 video. I’d say the 1-1 of SMG2 is better than SMG1, in that the level design is more linear and gets us straight into the pace of SMG2.
