- Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is one of the most iconic games in the Sonic series, and ever since it was originally released on the SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive, the game has seen many rereleases, ports, remasters and more. Sonic 2 has one of the most fascinating histories of any video game, and I go over all of that in this video. This is the rerelease history of Sonic The Hedgehog 2!
Did you know an early build of the game was stolen from the New York Toy Fair in 1992? Or that there were mobile phone releases before the 2013 Retro Engine release? All of this and more is covered today.
In this video, I go over every notable release of the game including its original release, the many ports, mobile releases, and even the many prototype and unfinished beta builds of the game that have leaked over the years.

The 2013 Hidden Palace Zone actually integrates the prototype layout a little ways into the level. It's a super cool, super subtle nod!

Though Sonic 2 Beta 6 *_WASN'T_* the first one to introduce Super Sonic, it was the Alpha build that came straight after Simon Wai, and even then the Simon Wai Prototype had Super Sonic's Palette Cycle implemented

Ok, but I doubt Sonic Movie 2 will be nearly the masterpeice that Sonic 2 itself was. That game is fricking amazing, my favorite classic Sonic game and I replay it constantly. I love the bright, inviting art style and bosses

Yeah I grew up with the mobile ports of 1 and 2, waited years for Sonic 3 to get ported. Didn't play the game untill I emulated it around 2018ish?
I kind of hope those get released one day to consoles because honestly I'd rather play them on a console than on my phone, (also look at the Sonic origins trailer It looks widescreen and I think I saw a part of hidden palace in there, Cross your fingers)

Sonic Jam (Saturn and poor Gamecom conversion), Sonic Mega Collection (and Plus) - Gamecube, PS2, Xbox & PC, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3 and Xbox 360), Wii Virtual Console (separate with no lock on), Sonic Classic Collection (Nintendo DS), Steam. Coming back next year in a new collection as a Taxman widescreen port, possibly with the beta music replacing MJ's songs.

On the note about the Sega 3D Collection releases for 3DS, the artist behind the covers for all three games is Ken Sugimori, one of the lead Pokemon character designers - So have fun seeing how someone from the house of Pokemon draws Sonic.
On a separate note, I miss how Modern and Classic have been changed to be separate characters - It's just Sonic...
Cool! Let's just forget about that certain "goddess" who draws both Sonic and Pokémon...

These are my Pros and Cons for Sonic 2:
Pros:
-Tails.
-Super Sonic.
-The Spindash.
-New Zones & Bosses.
Cons:
-No Saving.
-Metropolis Zone.
-Special Stages are Ungodly Difficult.
-It's Hard to even get into the Special Stages.
I tried the Special Stages in the mobile port and it's nigh impossible. Looking forward for my Mega SG so I can try it on a genuine controller. Cause touch screen controls help nothing.

This was the first Sonic game I played for the Genesis and is still a huge favorite for me and many other people, so there were definitely a lot rereleases over the years.
I am VERY intrigued at the prospect of there possibly being official CD audio versions of the Sonic 2 soundtrack somewhere in the Sega archives.

I first played sonic 2 on sonic mega collection before taking multiple breaks to look through all the comic book covers in bonus features. honestly its amazing how much history sonic has, and Im glad to see you covering all of it!
I can’t believe this but I remember watching that episode of Nick Arcade with Melissa Joan Heart playing Sonic2. I thought it would have been no problem for her to collect 25 rings and I could have done that too. But she hit something and lost it. I was so pumped for this show. So wild to see this video talk about it.

18:42 I have that middle plug and play with the red controller, it's the first version of Sonic 2 I ever played, where I was introduced to not only Sonic, but video games in general! It also includes _Ecco the dolphin, The Ooze, Columns, Gain Ground_ and _Alex Kidd & The Enchanted Castle._ The nostalgia hits hard with that one, I remember always wanting to play it as a kid, being super excited. Now I have the mega drive classics on my Nintendo Switch, which is how I play it now as I can't find where the plug and play has gone but it really isn't as bad as he is making it sound.

Hey, this is "Not So Official Sonic 2 Cartridge Box From Russia". You know, in some Russian small shops, who still sells some NES (to be more accurate, it is Dendy cartridges), Sega Mega Drive and even GBA cartridges, you can easily find this kind of things. I personally saw boxes and cartridges of Sonic Megamix, Sonic Jam 6 and Sonic Boom (that old Sonic 2 hack) for Mega Drive. And OF COURSE there are Sonic 1, 2 and 3, selling along with them. As I heard from friend, this is just normal Sonic games, but if I remember correctly, first and second games were translated on Russian.
The Stolen Prototype is apparently nicknamed the "CENSOR Prototype" after the bootleggers that stole it.
Wrong, the prototype that got stolen was the Simon Wai prototype. It was named after the person who found the stolen ROM

That footage of the original iOS Sonic 2 game is really cool to me as it’s like seeing part of my childhood again! I grew up playing that and Sonic 1, but I played it in an old iPad that really wasn’t good enough, so it ran at a similar speed to the 50hz PAL port of the original game. I haven’t seen that version in years though, so it’s cool to see it again!

Technically the first Sonic game I ever played, I remember my dad bought it for me for Xbox 360, and then one day without telling me he traded it in for another Sonic game known as Sonic Generations, I was really mad and was about to ask for him to trade it back but then I decided to play, so glad I didn’t make him trade it back.

This was the first Sonic game I'd ever beaten.
Sure, I was using the Mobile version as solo-Tails and I only got around 2 Chaos Emeralds without going to Hidden Palace, but I beat it. It was great.
