  • In our very first episode of Candid Conversations, we speak with Ten. Ten is currently an Epic consultant. We'll ask him how he started in the field of healthcare IT. Specifically how he started working as an Epic level 1 analyst with NO formal IT (Computer science/engineering) education. For those that aren't particularly interested in Epic. Ten provides great advice on how ANY healthcare professional can land their first IT analyst role! Please post your questions for Ten in the comments below.

    Hello. I currently work for an employer who uses Epic. I plan to speak with my manager or HR to gain insight in regards to sponsorship. If all things go well, is a sphynx/assessment test required before being accepted to the Epic training program? I cannot seem to find the answer to that specifically.

    • @HealthTechnologywithBeek
      @HealthTechnologywithBeek  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good luck. In our experience, and the experience of my peers the sphynx test was required before getting accepted. However, as applicants, we never found out the results or how we did. It was a difficult test and it seems the scoring was based on logic, critical thinking and how we came to the answer rather than just right/wrong.

    I am interested in getting into this field. I have work experience in health care. I worked in the lab for two years and have BS in Health Informatics and information management. I worked as a help desk analyist for a hospital for two years as well. How can I get myself in the door in the hospitals if I don’t have certification?

    • @HealthTechnologywithBeek
      @HealthTechnologywithBeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Marta G in Alabama. From speaking with EPIC analysts, it seems that you will first need to be sent to training by the hospital you work for. You wouldn't be able to get training on your own. If the hospital you work for has EPIC implemented, then perhaps you can ask your manager if there is opportunity for you to get sponsored. We just posted a follow up video with an EPIC consultant who provides some further insight. th-cam.com/video/2y4M6OjUI-Q/w-d-xo.html

      You're in luck that I'm trolling some of these videos in advance of my new analyst position I start on Tuesday :) I just took the Sphinx a month or so ago and passed. The bad news is that it's as hard as they say -- the good news is that you just need to be able to think well, and be decent with logical reasoning and language.
      I can't say too much specifically, since Epic has (rightfully) a lot of privacy and agreements that you are made to sign in order to not leak these things, but I can give you a few general tips that I've seen other "official" people say publicly:
      1) The programming language you're given is a made-up language for the test. They will teach it to you through the questions in the test and then they test your ability to learn that info on the fly and implement it. This was the hardest part for me, as even thoughI have a math degree, I do not have much programming experience outside of very basic stuff. This should give you comfort... you really don't need any programming experience, except maybe familiarity with the IDEAS of programming.
      2) The second two portions can vary, but basically think of language/word, logic, and graph/chart problems that you may find on something like the GRE or LSAT.
      The test is timed, and they purposefully make the time limits tough. I did not finish all the questions on the third portion even though I was pretty fast on the first two, yet I still "passed". So don't fret too much. You definitely don't need to be perfect. Also be prepared to never find out exactly how you did. They have internal scoring metrics, but you will either be told you passed or failed. In some cases you may get more information if you passed on how "well" you passed, but I can't say much more than that.
      Good luck! Don't stress, get sleep, and you will be fine :)

      Also the link that HeathIT with BeekAE posted is still pretty good considering most of the comments are a couple years old. I briefly read through and they still hold true in 2022 it seems. Good luck again.

    • @HealthTechnologywithBeek
      @HealthTechnologywithBeek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello that sounds like a very impressive background. Perhaps the RIS-IC experience can be useful for the EPIC Radiant and Cupid modules. The ED for the EPIC ASAP module. Skill wise it seems you have a stronger chance than most. Still the hard part is obtaining the cert itself. Here are the 3 ways to get certified below. Hope this helps.
