since 2016, I've relentlessly sought an opportunity to make my mark with Epic, but luck has yet to favor me. However, I anticipate a positive shift soon as I intensify my skills in IT and programming. Armed with over 20 years of pharmacy expertise, I currently hold pivotal roles at the largest city hospital: Controlled Substance Analyst, Investigational Pharmacy Manager, Supply Chain Analyst, and, presently, EPIC Final Approver and Sr. Data Analyst.
Thanks for the updated video, I'm proficient and seeking certification, and it's taking every ounce of my being to pass that test, I'm frikin almost depressed over it, anyway, with Epic certs, there's no such thing as being over-prepared, NONE.
Those tests aren’t the easiest. I’d usually have multiple PDFs open, a test environment, and my hands on the ctrl+F to quickly find info. Good luck on your next examination!!
So I'm applying to a job in the health care system in NYC. and the job requires to be EPIC certified but you cannot be certified unless you had worked for another healthcare system that provided that to you or EPIC itself. so in other words these jobs are not for you, they are for already EPIC certified people, and just like that, equal employment opportunities are legit non-existent. This is like saying hey! you need a dish to get food but you can only get a dish if you got food??? wtf???
Hi Danny, it depends on the position. I have many colleagues, including myself, that have applied to positions that required Epic certifications, but did not have Epic certifications before getting hired. During the meaningful use era, it was common for employers to put jobs out that requires Epic certifications, because you're not allowed to work on Epic if you don't have one, but will add an additional comment about how they will train you within the first few months. Those positions are not as common now. The path that I see that is more common, is applying to a non-Epic position, getting hired, and transitioning into an informatics position from within the organization.
Hi Brian, thanks for the video it is very insightful. I heard you talked about EPIC certification and proficiency, specifically downloading the study guide. My question is where do I find those materials to download for the proficiency study?
Hey Elijah! The study guides are searchable in Epic Galaxy. You just search for "study guide" + [Insert Epic certification here] and you should be able to find it. They work for both certification and proficiency since it's the same exam.
That’s a bummer. Those tests can be quite difficult. Willow had, probably still has, the lowest pass rates around 60-ish percent. I know quite a few that have failed more than 5 times unfortunately.
Hi Robert, you can find the training materials on Epic's userweb. However, you can only access it if your organization has Epic or currently in transition to Epic. If you do, you can browse their training catalog and look through the different modules that have proficiency/certification pathways. Lots to choose from! Hope that helps
I unfortunately don't have access to Epic anymore so I won't be able to do such a video. However, your organization should have various tutorials on doing those types of workflows. If not, be sure to ask that question on the Epic user forum and I'm sure you'll get some responses. Good luck!
Hi Brian, I am moving to a new role as Senior EPR configuration Analyst-EPIC, which of the Certification do you think that is most appropriate for me, as this is one of the targets set for me ?.
Hi Victor - that is a very difficult question because I'm unsure of what your job responsibilities are. Job titles can be a bit misleading and vague in the informatics world and usually it is your job responsibilities that will better dictate what certifications are best to obtain. Hope that helps!
sorry, i'm a bit confused. Can you define what is "first go with them"? There's two 'initial' tests I can think of. One is when you want to be an Epic analyst/consultant and not already working with an Epic institution - that test is called the sphynx test and you can only take it once. I'm not familiar with that test since I didn't go down that path. The tests I was referring to in the video are when you are already employed by an Epic institution and you are going for certification training. There's usually, at minimum, 1 test for each application and the 'initial' test is usually application fundamentals. Based on your question, I'm assuming you're referring to the sphynx test - which I don't have much information on unfortunately. I've heard it can be a bit difficult though: engagemehit.blogspot.com/2015/08/jumping-through-hoops-interview-process.html
I think so, I'm fairly certain it's the sphynx test now and the one I'm not familiar with. I think this may be some helpful read: www.reddit.com/r/healthIT/comments/4kagpz/epic_assessment/ I also work closely with a few Epic folks. I'll ask them when I'm back in office on Monday and see what I find out. Are you taking yours soon?
Brian, what do you think of a retail pharmD working for Epic as a means to get a certification? Which app do you see being the most in demand in the next 10 years?
Your first question is a bit difficult to answer as it's a bit ambiguous. My first thought would be that it's great to have retail PharmDs working for Epic to get certifications as I am a huge fan of individuals coming into the informatics space that have work experience. I personally have little experience in retail and struggle a bit with the retail/amb build in Epic as it's a bit more foreign to me. I'm not sure if this was the direction of your original question, but that's the first thought that comes to mind. To your second question about demand, I think the app with the highest demand will be in their reporting applications (Epic has a few) as the volume of data will grow even larger than it is now with supportive legislation (21st Century Cures) that have recently been finalized by the two historic CMS & ONC rules in March of this year. Granted, data provenance are issues that need be addressed and both the demand and importance of core applications like Epic's pharmacy, inpatient orders, & clinical documentation will always be needed.
Obtaining any certification is likely to be beneficial as it’ll give you a more comprehensive view of how other applications integrate within epic. However, the utility of how beneficial each certification is is likely dependent on your roles & responsibilities. Id probably suggest asking your epic AM or AC for suggestions on other useful certifications as they’ll probably have a better idea of what you currently do. Hope that helps!
Hi Brian, your videos are very helpful!! Thank you so much. If you are a clinical pharmacist and you’re offered an Epic analyst position and you’re going through the training and implementation. Is it really worth it? I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me the truth
I work in patient access in a hospital that uses Epic. I use Epic on the daily. Do I have a good chance of my supervisor sponsoring me to get the training?
That's a good question and not sure how helpful my response would be. However, I tend to see individuals that are most likely candidates for opportunities like that are those that not only use the system, but are also 'super users' or 'experts' of it that they end up helping their colleagues to use it better. Or help brainstorm ways to optimize its use. If you fall into that category, that probably gives you a good chance. Also, you should bring it up to your supervisor if that's part of your goal!
Hi Emile - that's a great question, but I may not have the best insight into that question. Anecdotally, I've met a few individuals that have applied to contracting positions for at-the-elbow support for Epic positions during a Epic go-live and learn on the spot. It's usually contract positions that can be as short as a day and last up to 1-2 weeks. However, those same individuals have told me the opportunities are rare and they only land a handful a year (~
Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your question Tony. I've HEARD (and please don't quote me) that it's estimated to be about 20k in total (e.g. travel, food, lodge) for a certification. But, I really can't confirm that.
Hi Brian! I am transitioning from a Respiratory Therapist to an Epic Optime analyst for the hospital system I work at. Do you know what the average pay range for a brand new optime analyst would look like. I am having a hard time finding a good pay range for this position online. I am not certified they are sending me to Epic to get the certification which is all virtual now I guess thanks to covid.
Hi Chelsie - I hope this comment isn't too delayed. Congrats on making the transition and I hope it's everything you're looking for and more. As for the average pay range, it's quite difficult to answer since there's a lot of variance for geography and even past experience. I looked at glassdoor for a general Epic analyst (www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/epic-analyst-salary-SRCH_KO0,12.htm) and they estimate 84.7k, which, I would have guessed around too. I'd think their range of 67k to 108k is more or less accurate too, but I would have guessed the max to be higher around 125k for the HCOL areas. Good luck on your Epic cert journey!
@@briankfung For me specifically, I was not allowed to use scrap paper or calculator. So it was really hard to jot down my and work certain exercises. Lets just say I always try to keep a leveled head but man, this really tested me 😂
Hi Jenin! I’m actually not sure. However, you can tell by going to userweb and seeing if they list it as certification/proficiency or certification. If the former, they do, if the latter they don’t. Hope that helps!
It depends. The in-person training sessions, which are required for 'being certified', are live classes over a span of a few days and sometimes months. You'll take exams (usually 1-2) during that duration. The 'being proficient', entails self-study vs. live classes. It also has the same exams you'll schedule just like the 'being certified' pathway.
Hey S Paul! All of the assessments (exam, quiz, project, homework) are all open book. While your ability to quickly ctrl+f can make a huge difference, the way they ask the questions isn't always straight forward - you'll definitely want to review before taking the test. The class structure is a mix of lecture, individual exercises, projects, and office hours. There is a lot of interaction with the teachers. Classes are typically 3-4 days at Epic. You'll do your project and exams back at your own institution though. They have a pretty unique campus and quite fun to explore - I enjoyed my time there.
I know this video is old, but you DON'T have to be certified to be an Epic Consultant, just an analysis. I'm currently a Consultant on an Epic project and non certified.
Hi Brian, am preparing for a new job which requires Epic. Found this video quite eye opening. By any chance do you have a link handy for the Epic handbook ready?
Hi Brian, Do you know if you passed the proctored exam at one facility, is it good at another? I heard that you can only take it one time. I currently work at an Epic institution. Thank You.
Hi Tanya, I'm assuming you're referring to the sphynx exam? If so, it should be just a one-time test. That's great you passed as well as it can be an extremely difficult test. Hope that helps!
@briankfung ok I work and have worked with epic for a little over 5 years now in the clinical side but will have to take a further look for this. Thanks!
@@thaguccilifeoflou gotcha. Yeah, if you're working at a hospital or health system on the clinical side, you can use that email from the hospital or health system you're affiliated with to create an account at epic's userweb. Once complete, you can access all the training materials on the epic userweb.
That is set by Epic, if you work for epic. Like any other company. I believe they originally let their employees work remote, but required them to back onsite at some point. I’m not sure what the policy is for them currently given the vaccination efforts
Hi I currently work for a company that uses epic, so I have user web access. Is it required that I let my employer know that I want to get self study proficiencies?
It's not required, but you'll have to let them know at some point since there are institution-specific policies about how to take the test since you need a local proctor.
Hi Brian, I am a senior nurse here in the UK and we are currently changing our system to EPIC this year. My hospital is looking for a principal trainer. My company will also sponsor the certification in the US. I already have some experience from my previous job as an information system trainer (iHIMS) so I have an advantage to this post however, I am thinking what will my qualifications as an EPIC Principal trainer lead me to? I am thinking of working my way to health informatics but I am not sure if there is a career progression in this area. Is is profitable to be EPIC certified or should I stick to nursing and progress to managerial roles? thanks - Andy
Hi Andy. This is likely a question that I cannot answer in full as I lack knowledge of the compensation structures for two things: the UK and nurses. With that disclaimer, here are some comments: 1) It's not uncommon that individuals transition out of a trainer role into a builder role. Usually individuals that already have a clinical background (e.g. nurse or pharmacist) and are training the application they would be building in. For example, many of my pharmacy friends that started with training would transition to Willow analysts after a few years. It doesn't always happen and the pay differential can be drastic - so, something to consider. 2) Epic certifications are probably less valuable then they were before, especially in the US, as most implementations have already been done in the US and there are already MANY individuals with Epic certifications. Thus, the demand is a lot lower because the supply is higher. That isn't true in the UK though since, last I recalled, you guys were still undergoing a lot of Epic implementations. The only thing here is that I've always considered medical professions in the UK to be paid significantly less than the US so I'm not sure if it'll be more or less profitable going down the traditional nursing routes towards managerial roles. 3) Personally, the market is hot in technology and I'd think anything + tech would make you more valuable. Be sure to chat with some folks in the UK to get their thoughts too!
Do you need to have an Informatics degree in order to be able to do the Epic certification? What about someone who has a degree in Marketing Manangement and another one in Business Manangement?
You do not :). In fact, I met many folks with diverse backgrounds that went through epic training that includes folks with degrees in English literature.
I've never taken it - and it's different than the Epic certification exams that I discuss here. With that said, the sphinx exams are primarily logic-based exams. I'd suggest using any prep materials for logic and problem solving to help out. Good luck!
If work directly for Epic, or an Epic institution, you can download the materials by creating an Epic userweb account. If you don't, you won't be able to download their materials.
I don’t have the links, but you should’ve able to find it on epic user web galaxy by searching for that certification. They usually have a nice summary/review of each cerification
Sorry to hear that. Epic isn't the most intuitive at times, but also usually depends on the individuals that implemented it since it differs by instance. If you're trying to learn more about Epic, be it as an end user or an Epic analyst, I'd suggest going to their epic userweb and reviewing the forums or training materials. Subsequently, I'd encourage you to reach out to your hospital's epic team to inquire about trainings since your hospital will have customized the Epic environment. They should have some time of training and/or resources that can help you there. Good luck!
I am certified in Beacon, amb and clin doc. I don't work in that department anymore, but I would like to keep my certifications valid. I'm not confident that my employer will cover the cost (I'm still associated with the facility and have a proctor). I need to know how much the tests cost to keep up the certifications.
That’s a great question. If you’re still with the same employer, you should, I assume be able to still use same process and proctor to take the tests every year. If there are costs associated, you’ll want to ask your employer.
Epic is actually expanding quite a bit outside of the US - Africa and Europe are two places that have started a lot of implementations. You should check out positions there!
Nope, typing speed is likely not a factor in this test. It's all multiple choice and there aren't any free text questions. With that said, time runs out quite fast so you should be very familiar with the contents, done all the projects and quizzes, before attempting the exam.
Hey,I am working in MNC company .I need to get this EPIC CERTIFICATION. They will provide me training in this.can u please tell me what's will be the pattern and pass percentage?
Hi Arun - I'm unsure of the question you are asking. What do you mean by pattern? Also, the pass percentage depends on the Epic certification you pursue - it's different across the different certification exams. I also don't know the pass percentages for all the Epic certifications, but I am aware that the Willow Inpatient certification is around 55-60%
Hi Henry, that's a difficult question to answer since it really depends on organization, geographical location, and your own experience. Here is a very average range from glassdoor: www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/willow-epic-salary-SRCH_KO0,11.htm I can tell you that I've personally seen Willow analysts, who are pharmacists, receive salaries ranging from 90k - 200k. Willow consultants I've seen range from 75hr - 200/hr. It's a difficult question because there's quite a few factors. Hope that helps!
Hi Brian - Your video was really great! Somewhere along the way, I missed the where to get the Epic Training manual for downloading so that I can learn Epic on my own and pursue Proficiency. I want to ensure the I have the official site and the recent-dated version. Let me know if I am supposed to contact Epic directly. Thanks!!!
Hi Diana! If your employer is currently affiliated with Epic, you can download it from: userweb.epic.com/. If your employer is not, then you will not be able to. Good luck!
they're fantastic! I've enjoyed all of them over the years. Many of them also have very unique backgrounds, which, you should definitely them about when you go!
1) review material on galaxy - there’s specific chapters recommended in the review section on what you need to know 2) understand which sections are weighted highest and be sure you know it conceptually and technically, 3) review ALL red stop signs in the cogito training materials, 4) complete the project before you take the exam, 5) take the practice exam, if available, 6) open al the training materials on day of exam so you can quickly ctrl+f for the answers, 7) do NoT spend that much time on any one question if you can’t solve it within like 5-10 minutes so you can come back to that later, 8) have an epic environment open for additional reference to build and/or testing purposes. Good luck!
If you’re using “direct” as in all of it is “ctrl+f”, then that’s prolly a bit misleading. The epic exams are tricky. Very easy to misinterpret their question even if you ctrl+f. You’ll want to review material beforehand so you have a good understanding of the configuration.
Good morning Brian, please I really want to be an epic certified consultant but I studied Banking/Economics ,how do I go about it?also I'll want u to be my mentor as well
Hi Iyobosa! There are many pathways to become an epic certified consultant. Given your background, the easiest may be to search for opportunities at Epic. They usually hire directly from a diverse range of backgrounds and straight out of undergraduate programs. Unfortunately, I currently don’t have the time to take on mentees, but encourage you to reach out to others in informatics! Hope that helps!
I have been a nurse and working at the bedside for 13 years and just recently graduated with a nursing informatics degree. My organization is going to Epic. What would you recommend to study for this epic preassessment test especially for someone like me who never did any programming? Thank you.
Hi Jocelyn, epic pre-assessment test sounds like the sphynx test. Can you confirm? All of the recommendations I provided in the video are actually related to the various application tests - there aren't any pre-assessments. If it's the sphynx test, I'm not very familiar with that because I didn't take it, but I've heard it can be difficult, it's similar to GRE, and you can only take it once. This is something I found about it: engagemehit.blogspot.com/2015/08/jumping-through-hoops-interview-process.html
this might be a good read too! www.reddit.com/r/healthIT/comments/4kagpz/epic_assessment/ I've been getting quite a few questions about this lately as well. I plan on asking my Epic colleagues next week about it when I'm back in the office. Good luck!
Brian, I apologize if you've already answered this question but can you provide the link for downloading the epic training manual for proficiency if it is available? I do not meet the criteria to be certified yet but it would be great to add to my inpatient coding resume that I had some proficiency training in that area. Thanks much!
Hi Sarah - you can download all of the Epic training materials from their userweb (userweb.epic.com/). However, if you do not currently work for Epic, or an institution and/or company that has Epic, you will not be able to login as it is tied to your institution and/or companies email address. Hope that helps!
Epic certification exams are open book and open environment. These exams are not hard at all if you actually study. I have dealt with an Epic consultant that's hired by Nordic. She's certified in several modules, but she's CLUELESS about some basic features that a certified Epic consultant should know. I had to terminate her assignment immediately. I never understand why Epic's certification exams are OPEN BOOK. No wonder some certified Epic consultants have no clue what they're saying without a reference book in front of them.
Hey David - I certainly agree. Ironically, I failed my first Epic recertification exam a few weeks ago for reporting. I didn't study and finished the 1.5 hour exam in 15 minutes - so completely my fault. In regards to your comment about Epic consultants, I don't have the best impression either. To be honest, being certified in Epic doesn't mean much either as it's not difficult to ctrl+F for answers. It's just a way to help employers weed out candidates easier as opposed to someone with zero Epic experience. I can usually tell if someone actually knows what they are doing during the interview process as I ask very specific questions about certain workflows and/or functionalities.
Hi brian...iam healthcare background iam looking for epic opportunities not geting anywhere so can i learn self by online class and certification guide me ?
Hey! You can definitely learn by yourself, but you also have to be affiliated with an epic organization (eg hospital, vendor) to get access to the materials.
Hello Brian! Thank you for this video and for all of the time that you invested. Would you happen to know where I can access an EPIC training video on adding a new insurance payer into the system? Thanks for your assistance!
Hi Meredith! Epic's userweb is usually the first place I go to learn about certain functionalities and workflows. If you go to the training home, on the right side is a lot of training resources. Their WeLearning is a great place to see videos of various foundation workflows being performed. Alternatively, galaxy is a great place to search and they usually link to powerpoint slides or screenshots. Hope that helps!
Hi Meredith, I work in a hospital that has Epic, and I have been working in Epic since 2012. there is a training video on how to add insurance payors, but you have to be working with that company to obtain the training modules. Most hospital have training classes you can take, but as I stated you have to be working with that company to get access to that.
Hey Li! You certainly can and I know many students that have IF their institution already has Epic. If they do, you can just create a user web account and look through the materials. Id suggest finding a contact for the epic team at your institution though because you’ll need to follow their procedures on taking the exam. Hope that helps!
sowmya konakanchi Market penetration for EHR vendors is probably 90%+ for either Cerner or Epic. The vast majority of academic medical centers are on Epic. Some examples are: Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, OHSU, OSU, University of Utah, Cleveland Clinic, and Mayo Clinic
@@briankfung so, that means.. these univerisities give out certificates of EPIC when a student completes that program? Can you elaborate please? I'm applying for masters in health informatics and it would be an add on if I can get EPIC certified while being a student.
sowmya konakanchi it would probably be very misleading to say that these universities give them out. The tests for ALL epic certificates are through Epic, so Epic is the authority that gives them out. If you work for a university that has Epic, especially if you’re in an informatics role, you can likely access Epic materials, be proctored by your university, and if you pass, get certified by Epic. As a student, it likely depends on your specific program and university. You’ll have to ask your program coordinator if it’s possible because they control the process by which you take the exams. It’s rare to see students with epic certifications, but the ones that have it, were usually sponsored by their programs. So - very program specific. Hope that helps
Hi Lady - it can be! It really depends on the position. When we hire individuals, we typically look to see if they match the specific job responsibilities. If their CV aligns, then whether they have the degree or not, it won't matter. Further, it's usually the interview that we do the weeding out. A degree won't make a huge difference if you do poorly on the interview. With that said, I find that candidates that have a health informatics or information management degree do fairly well on the interviews :)
Hey Herbert! I think it depends on the skill set of the individual and may be a bit subjective, but by sheer objectives measures (i.e. failure rates) it’s Willow Inpatient. Last I checked, it’s like a ~65% passing rate. I have a bit of a computer programming background, but I’m primarily trained in pharmacy. I did chronicles install utilities and moved onto chronicles database programming and found it a bit challenging. So, my vote would probably go towards that :). A few of my pure IT/CS colleagues thought it was challenging too, but I’m sure they’d do better in that then the clinical applications
I'm actually not familiar with the training/certification process for Meditech. To my knowledge, Epic has the most robust training/certification process, but I'm pretty sure each of the EHR vendors have some process for certification/training. Aside from certifications though, truly, any informatics pharmacist, regardless of vendor-specific certifications, should be qualified to work with any of those EHR vendors as long as they have the fundamentals down.
Thanks for your valuable information. I just got a pharmacy informatics job and your videos helped!!! I was wondering if you have an email address that I can use for communication?
that's awesome!! I'd love to hear more about that if you don't mind sharing! And of course, my email is ufbfung@gmail.com. It does get a bit backlogged, but I'll always make sure to respond!
I work for clinic and I got a chance to go for certification , I had successfully submitted my project but I failed in first attempt . I have attended for PB Claims .Can you please help me is there any practice test that can help me ? It’s kind of stressing me over thinking about that test . Please help
Raji Lingisetty What exactly did you fail? If it’s the project, you can submit it as many times as possible until you get an 85%. You have three times to take the tests. You have to have an 80% to pass the tests. I share this because I just received my Epic cert in Professional Billing Admin.
Professional Billing Claims Administration , questions are really very hard to understand and very confusing. I got 68% on my first attempt and taking second attempt on next Tuesday 15th . Any suggesting to get pass percentage really appreciate
Raji Lingisetty I did the following: 1. Reached out to my TS to go over the test. 2. Made flash cards of every term listed after each chapter. 3. Used Quizlet.com. 4. Read the whole training companion. 5. Went over the areas I didn’t do well in over and over.

That's awesome! Let me know how it goes! Especially if the certifications lead to a new position/promotion afterwards :)

You rocked it out in this one Fung. Proud of you bro :)
Thanks.
Thanks Pablo!!
Bless Up Brain,
thanks for all the information.
Happy to help Eteezy!
The assessment test is sooo difficult. I failed it twice. I wish there was an app that tutored me on passing.
That’s a bummer. Those tests can be quite difficult. Willow had, probably still has, the lowest pass rates around 60-ish percent. I know quite a few that have failed more than 5 times unfortunately.
I am just looking for training materials to become proficient right now. I would later get certified. Any suggestions on training material locations?
Hi Robert, you can find the training materials on Epic's userweb. However, you can only access it if your organization has Epic or currently in transition to Epic. If you do, you can browse their training catalog and look through the different modules that have proficiency/certification pathways. Lots to choose from! Hope that helps
Hi can you make a video on non-invasive technologist - ECHO/vascular how to navigate and use the system
I unfortunately don't have access to Epic anymore so I won't be able to do such a video. However, your organization should have various tutorials on doing those types of workflows. If not, be sure to ask that question on the Epic user forum and I'm sure you'll get some responses. Good luck!
Thanks for lowering the music volume
Glad you found it better!
Would like to see a Video on the initial EPIC test that is given when you first go with them :)
Hey Liz! Are you referring to the Epic Sphynx test? Or the exams you take when you pursue an application specific certification?
The test when you first go with them. 😄
sorry, i'm a bit confused.
The test you are given when your employer is going with Epic. Does that help?
I think so, I'm fairly certain it's the sphynx test now and the one I'm not familiar with. I think this may be some helpful read: www.reddit.com/r/healthIT/comments/4kagpz/epic_assessment/
I also work closely with a few Epic folks.
I have a masters in informatics and am part of an epic implementation project. Would it be helpful for me to get a clindoc certificate?
Obtaining any certification is likely to be beneficial as it’ll give you a more comprehensive view of how other applications integrate within epic. However, the utility of how beneficial each certification is is likely dependent on your roles & responsibilities. Id probably suggest asking your epic AM or AC for suggestions on other useful certifications as they’ll probably have a better idea of what you currently do. Hope that helps!
@@briankfung thanks for your reply! It helped with my decision! I went for Epiccare inpatient orders analyst cert. Hoping to do ambulatory cert after.
Awesome content lecture bro
Thanks a ton!
What can I learn before Epic training that will help me to be successful?
If by before you mean before ANY Epic materials, it's probably just basic logic. Lots of their configuration settings are usually logic-based.
Thank you for your excellent video. How to become an Epic elbow support?
Hi Emile - that's a great question, but I may not have the best insight into that question. Anecdotally, I've met a few individuals that have applied to contracting positions for at-the-elbow support for Epic positions during a Epic go-live and learn on the spot. It's usually contract positions that can be as short as a day and last up to 1-2 weeks. However, those same individuals have told me the opportunities are rare and they only land a handful a year (~
Hi Brian, thank you for sharing this information. I do have a quick question. Do you know the cost of the Epic training at Epic?
How to I obtain an "EPIC manual" to become more proficient in EPIC?
You can only access it if you work for epic directly or if you work for an employer that has epic. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the vid! Im actually applying as an AMB Analyst position. Hopefully I will get it :)
Best of luck!
@@briankfung Thank you! So recently took the Epic Sphinx assessment. Like wow... what just happened to me 😅

@@briankfung For me specifically, I was not allowed to use scrap paper or calculator. So it was really hard to jot down my and work certain exercises. Lets just say I always try to keep a leveled head but man, this really tested me 😂
Hi Brian, do you know if Tapestry is eligible for proficiency, or only certification?
Hi Jenin! I’m actually not sure. However, you can tell by going to userweb and seeing if they list it as certification/proficiency or certification. If the former, they do, if the latter they don’t. Hope that helps!
I'm confused. Is the certification both a series of classes and exams?
Brian,
What is the exam
/quiz structure is it open book? Also what is the class structure when taking the certification class at their headquarter?
Brian Fung thank you so much for the info it helped a lot! I am hoping to get certified one day for Grand Central/Prelude.
Grand central and prelude are both fun and challenging applications. Best of luck!! Hope you enjoy it
Thanks for the great video. You da bomb.
I’m so glad you liked it!
is there an epic certification for nursing
I know this video is old, but you DON'T have to be certified to be an Epic Consultant, just an analysis. I'm currently a Consultant on an Epic project and non certified.
There may be different definitions of what an Epic consultant is. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this was no longer a requirement either.
Thanks for sharing this was very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Brian, am preparing for a new job which requires Epic. Found this video quite eye opening. By any chance do you have a link handy for the Epic handbook ready?
Unfortunately I do not as I no longer work at an epic institution. If you do, you can go to the epic user web to download it
Hi Brian,
Do you know if you passed the proctored exam at one facility, is it good at another? I heard that you can only take it one time. I currently work at an Epic institution.
Thank You.
Hi Tanya, I'm assuming you're referring to the sphynx exam? If so, it should be just a one-time test. That's great you passed as well as it can be an extremely difficult test. Hope that helps!
I am certified in Epic PB and HB resolute . Trying to find a position.
Nichell W has it been difficult for you?
How’s the job hunt going? Have you leveraged recruiters?
Where would one acquire the base study guide for the certification proficiency route?
you'd get it from epic userweb - which requires you to be affiliated with an Epic organization (e.g. hospital that uses Epic).
Working for Epic , does it mean you will mostly work from home ?
That is set by Epic, if you work for epic. Like any other company. I believe they originally let their employees work remote, but required them to back onsite at some point. I’m not sure what the policy is for them currently given the vaccination efforts
Hi I currently work for a company that uses epic, so I have user web access. Is it required that I let my employer know that I want to get self study proficiencies?
It's not required, but you'll have to let them know at some point since there are institution-specific policies about how to take the test since you need a local proctor.
Hi Brian,
I am a senior nurse here in the UK and we are currently changing our system to EPIC this year.
Brian Fung Thank you for your response
Sure thing!
How can i prepare for the sphinx test epic test
I've never taken it - and it's different than the Epic certification exams that I discuss here. With that said, the sphinx exams are primarily logic-based exams. I'd suggest using any prep materials for logic and problem solving to help out. Good luck!
You have to be certified in Epic before you can become proficient in another module.
Thanks for the feedback! Though, that’s not entirely true as I actually got multiple proficiencies before getting certified.

If work directly for Epic, or an Epic institution, you can download the materials by creating an Epic userweb account. If you don't, you won't be able to download their materials.
Do you have links for tests and study guides to prepare for RHB390 certification exam?
I don’t have the links, but you should’ve able to find it on epic user web galaxy by searching for that certification. They usually have a nice summary/review of each cerification
I need Help in Epic. Is there any training I can take outside the hospital I work?
Sorry to hear that. Epic isn't the most intuitive at times, but also usually depends on the individuals that implemented it since it differs by instance. If you're trying to learn more about Epic, be it as an end user or an Epic analyst, I'd suggest going to their epic userweb and reviewing the forums or training materials. Subsequently, I'd encourage you to reach out to your hospital's epic team to inquire about trainings since your hospital will have customized the Epic environment. They should have some time of training and/or resources that can help you there. Good luck!
From where I can get the certification ? Link
It’s provisioned by Epic. You can learn more about it if you search for epic user web. That’s where you can register for the exam as well.

Sending a message to your Epic AM or AC (if you're implementing) or Epic TS would be your best bets!

I don’t know any Canadian companies personally, but any of them that have epic would probably be your best bet.
Great info, I always wondered how this worked!
Yoooo Paul the OG - you guys got Epic at your institution?
Yeah all 3 hospitals I work at have Epic
oh true! Stack up your Epic certifications and come join me in the informatics world :) :)
Can an informatics pharmacist become a CTO?
Sure, I wouldn’t see why not. Though, I typically see informatics leaders rise up to CPIO or CIO vs CTO. Is a c-suite position in your future goal?
I am certified in Beacon, amb and clin doc. I don't work in that department anymore, but I would like to keep my certifications valid. I'm not confident that my employer will cover the cost (I'm still associated with the facility and have a proctor). I need to know how much the tests cost to keep up the certifications.
That’s a great question. If you’re still with the same employer, you should, I assume be able to still use same process and proctor to take the tests every year. If there are costs associated, you’ll want to ask your employer.
Do you required a bachelors degree or a degree in general to be epic certified ?
Technically no, but the likelihood of you getting that opportunity is probably extremely rare.
I work as helpdesk for hospital..how do I proceed epic route
userweb.epic.com/ register an account there and proceed with their training materials.
I have epic certification but sadly I don't have us work visa
Epic is actually expanding quite a bit outside of the US - Africa and Europe are two places that have started a lot of implementations. You should check out positions there!
Must I have a certain typing speed to pass the test?
Nope, typing speed is likely not a factor in this test. It's all multiple choice and there aren't any free text questions. With that said, time runs out quite fast so you should be very familiar with the contents, done all the projects and quizzes, before attempting the exam.
Hey,I am working in MNC company .I need to get this EPIC CERTIFICATION. They will provide me training in this.can u please tell me what's will be the pattern and pass percentage?
I am having more number of queries.how can I contact u brother
Hi Arun - I'm unsure of the question you are asking. What do you mean by pattern? Also, the pass percentage depends on the Epic certification you pursue - it's different across the different certification exams. I also don't know the pass percentages for all the Epic certifications, but I am aware that the Willow Inpatient certification is around 55-60%
Feel free to leave a comment here and I'll do my best to answer!
What pay can I expect for Willow? Can you give a range? Just got a spot and want to know where I should be.
Hi Henry, that's a difficult question to answer since it really depends on organization, geographical location, and your own experience. Here is a very average range from glassdoor: www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/willow-epic-salary-SRCH_KO0,11.htm
I can tell you that I've personally seen Willow analysts, who are pharmacists, receive salaries ranging from 90k - 200k. Willow consultants I've seen range from 75hr - 200/hr. It's a difficult question because there's quite a few factors. Hope that helps!

Can you please tell any tips to crack the Epic cogito exam ?
Good luck!
@@briankfung Thankyou so much
@@briankfung some guys are saying 80% of questions are direct from the material . Is that true ?
If you’re using “direct” as in all of it is “ctrl+f”, then that’s prolly a bit misleading. The epic exams are tricky. Very easy to misinterpret their question even if you ctrl+f. You’ll want to review material beforehand so you have a good understanding of the configuration.

Can you have a Health Information management degree and get EPIC certification?
Absolutely! Most individuals with Epic certifications or move into Epic roles only have a bachelors degree :)

Hi Brain
Can I obtain these EPIC certifications as a student at my institution?
Hey Li! You certainly can and I know many students that have IF their institution already has Epic. If they do, you can just create a user web account and look through the materials. Id suggest finding a contact for the epic team at your institution though because you’ll need to follow their procedures on taking the exam. Hope that helps!
@@briankfung can you name some institutions that are EPIC certified?
sowmya konakanchi Market penetration for EHR vendors is probably 90%+ for either Cerner or Epic.
Thanks. I just listened to the original email and I was pulling my hair out. This is better without the music.
Just realized you commented on the other video. Glad the new one is better!
Yep, I'll never learn it though since I don't have a way to.
Well, if the opportunity ever comes around - now you know how :)
Is a health informatics and information management degree useful for this field? To get hired?

I'm actually not familiar with the training/certification process for Meditech. Aside from certifications though, truly, any informatics pharmacist, regardless of vendor-specific certifications, should be qualified to work with any of those EHR vendors as long as they have the fundamentals down.
