I posted a video on some of the annoying features of the FX30 some weeks back, like you I wondered why they placed the multi-selector control on the top. I realized after I started to shoot more video with it, that I had to change how I held the camera to access the record button. This in turn, allowed me to get comfortable with the multi-selector being on top. I had to get out of the photography mindset of using the shutter (which I had reprogrammed to record) button and use the actual record button. This camera requires a mindset change to adopt to. While not a low light champ like the A7S III or FX3, the FX30 can shoot in low light conditions and produce some great images. I’ve tested the Cine EI mode, in low light and have a video on that as well, in which for the conditions, the FX30 performed well.
My thoughts: 1. I like the body design and style. 2. ISO button: Totally agree with you. I keep my finger away from this button. Thanks for your explanation. 3. Record Button and Joystick: Agree with you but I always use different handle options (with the record button) this is why I don't care. But again I love body design and style. 4. Roller shutter issue: I think it's not a flaw. It is a technical debt. These kinds of beginner-level cameras don't have a solution to this issue for the near future. Thank you.
Maybe I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but Tony Northrup's channel debunked the higher mega pixel worse low light performance. Nice review, I'm thinking about getting the Fx30 to pair with my A7IV to do sizzle reels for restaurant jobs/promotion.
You're sort of drinking the kool-aid but not really. Smaller pixels will have worse low light performance, and higher MP in the same area will result in smaller pixels, that's physics. But what I think his test proved is that there are many other factors nowadays that affect low light performance and those can be more important
Right on, if the Fx30 was really a videocentric camera, wouldn't it be better to have a 4K sensor instead of 6K, not only that it would have much better low light performance but would also reduce the rolling shutter problem, and there might not be any cropping at higher frame rates. Without the need for oversampling it might not even need the internal cooling fan, just a passive heat sink like in the A7Siii will do.
Sony built the FX30 to stick to a price point, they aren’t going to give it best features. The didn’t develop a whole new body for it, they used the FX3 housing and processor. They may do firmware updates to make it better in the future. I’m certain this camera could have better photography specs but, they chose to limit that to focus on the video side.
great video! I have a a6400 and I want this FX30 (I cannot afford the XF3)-I'll do some weddings and some short doc style stuff. I just realized that the CFexpress cards are way too much for me! aye caramba! I'll do regular 4k 30 and 4k60- that's it....I researched a bit and the SD cards V90 (Sandisk at 300MB/s) will work for most codecs...right? I don't need the ultra high codecs. You mentioned v60 cards...maybe? any way you could direct me to a link of the ones you have used? Nothing like first hand experience.I have a Sigma 16mm f1.4 and a Sony 18-105mm f4 lenses but I am debating whether to get a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 or a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for indoors. What's the highest ISO you can shoot while keeping quality? it cannot be ISO 2500...ISO 4000 maybe? I know fast lenses are best but a zoom is practical for video. I have a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for my Canon 90D and C100 mk2. I wish Sigma made one for the Sony E mount. I'm not sure the Sigma adapter MC-11 will be a good investment so that I can mount my Sigma f1.8 onto the a6400 and the upcoming FX30...I will skip the XLR handle for now...but it would be nice. Thanks for the video
For ISO it really depends on a lot of factors. But I think ISO 4000 is definitely useable! You’re probably fine up to/around 6400 depending on exposure and how much noise reduction you want to do.
@@RileyEndicott hi there. I prefer not to use denoise....I need footage that is almost ready to go...Those Sony Tough cards v60 and v90 look good. Any experience with Lexar Professional? going the FX 3 might mean 3 times the cost for me! as the camera is 2x the cost of the FX30 and then I would need a few FF lenses...I'm not a top video producer...yet! THanks so much!
This more megapixels = worse low light performance in modern cameras is a myth. Somehow people aren't complaining about noise on their 60-100 MP phone cameras.
Good reasons to get an FX30 over the FX3. More lens options - basically any full frame or apsc lens is good to go and can also be adapted for a wider range of lenses. Cost less so you can get 2 or 3 cameras for yourself. But hey, regardless of what you get, make something dope.
I don't understand why we only saw A7S III footage during the 4k 120fps section and never saw the Sony FX30 4k 120fps footage? Can you show us that for comparison so we can judge for ourselves?
*This is going to be a CHALLENGE for Me as I'm comin from the a6400 but most of this I doubt I'll have to Deal with. BUT the Lens I have already have ND Filters I bought for them*
obviously the rolling shutter is nowhere near those other cameras with stacked sensors BUT compared to the previous Sony APSC cameras it is way better.
I think maybe you guys need to go out and make your own camera. And get the precise things that you want on your camera. I'm just saying. I hear a lot of complaints but nobody's going out making their own camera. If this offends anyone, I apologize. Toodles
Coming from a Nikon, that is one thing I don’t like about my Sony cameras, mainly the grip. Using the FX30 with it’s flip out screen and top record button, has me holding it slightly different to use that button, which makes it a bit more livable. When shooting photos though, I tend leave the screen on the back of the camera and that’s when the grip can get uncomfortable.
@@MODESTYXO205 I got my FX30 for vlogging and it work well in day and night situations. It is not going to offer moonlight recording capabilities like the FX3 and A7S III but it can hold it's own in low light conditions. Will you need to apply some noise reduction? Depending on how low the available light is, yes. The FX30 is a lot more capable than some people give it credit for. I posted a low light test using the Cine EI and the Dual Base ISO settings on the FX30 on my channel. I showed some unedited footage, then a few with noise reduction added.

I believe most ppl who purchase the FX30 already know what their getting into ...these flaws a pretty minor
The rolling shutter is much better than on the ZV E10.

It’s an interesting choice for sure. My guess is that the sensor will get reused on other bodies like the a7s/fx3/fx6
Yeah we don't need ibis! Lol
I think this sensor will be put to use on photocentric APS-C cams soon enough.

Good info. Other than cost, I’m just not sure why anyone would choose an FX30 over an FX3. An A7SIII & FX3 combo has been killer for me.
Unless you really need a S35 sensor cost would be be the biggest reason. You could almost buy two Fx30’s for the price if one Fx3.
$$$$ is a big reason for the choice
same setup that I have!👍🏾
Many people don’t need to “see in the dark” 😅

if sony used a cropped down a7iv sensor (13mp) on the fx30 it'd be perfect.

You should have bought the fx3
I have one 🙂
I think the camera is horrible in low light especially you cannot be able to use a slog2 I will be selling mine
Sony's ergonomics is known to be poor.
I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I’m a big fan of Sony’s ergonomics, especially on their cine line

That makes sense!
If you were to buy a camera today for documentary/ vlog content. Would you recommend the fx3 or the a73
