Soo happy we are getting shutter angle, as a newb to filming I feel the shutter angle is going to be easier to understand when filming. Thank you Jason for all the great info on the fx30. I have always been curious what a full frame anamorphic lens with a speed booster on an APSC Censor would look like? just curious as I have not really found any info on such a setup.
You will just gain a little more shallower depth with the speed booster. That is the most noticable thing. I have just been using the Laowa Nanomorphs and fairly happy with the look they bring once the scene is lit nicely
Great review Jason, here is my take from a full time wedding videographer. I have 3 Fx30’s along with s3, R5 & 4. I shoot solo using all 6 cameras during a ceremony, so I have auto iso on at the lowest practical setting & use nd’s to control exposure. I shoot all 6 in 10 bit slog 3.cine. & it is super easy to match all 6 cameras up in Resolve. I have to over expose more on the fx30’s (1.7 stops) as even on a bright day 800iso, I can get noise in the black suits. But overall super happy with the Fx30’s. I also use the 1,2 & 3 memory dial to quickly switch frame rates where the shutter angle is already set as I haven’t got time to muck around.👍🤗🙏nutty nashy
All my lenses are full frame GM. Would I be better off going for the FX3? I don't need anymore lenses. I shoot in tight spaces and use the 14mm GM so with this camera I will loose quite a bit with the crop.
10bit being bare minimum now ? 😢 thanks . I just picked up a brand new a7c in the box sealed $ 200 couldn’t pass it up, which has been a great camera. Also have a Sony ZVE 10 both are 8 bit color and they’re both great hybrid cameras and can get the job done. But I’ve been really eyeing the FX 30 since it came out and I’ve been wanting it It would be cool to have for my TH-cam channel
I love my FX30! Gonna get some anamorphics this year. Looking at the s35 Remus 1.5x 35mm T1.6 and maybe the Laowa 65mm with the extra 1.33x adapter as well. I’d love the FX3/30 to get 1.5x desqueeze support but regardless I’ll probably use a monitor anyways so I won’t cry about it 😂 and shutter angle ain’t a big concern since I know it’s coming in September 🤷♂️
the adapters are ok, the only thing I don't like is they soften the image even more so you may be forced to stop the lens down even more. definitely recommend try just get the anamorphic lens with your desired squeeze
Solid B Cam, been using it since launch. Australia is PAL right, do you deliver anything in 25p? I only say as for some weird reason Sony cameras don't let you shoot in 25p in XAVC HS so I'm suck using XAVC S. It's almost like they forgot to put it in...
yeah I am stuck in PAL and have delivered everything I've shot in 25fps. That is why I film with XAVC-S because there is no HS codec for that frame rate. This has been mentioned in so many videos and noone knows why
Hello there -- have a documentary looming. Ref. using the 'clear image zoom' with prime cinematic glass as opposed to using a PZ 16-35 -- which would you suggest? Cheers!
Hi there Jason, my question to you, I own a couple of A74 and I´m very pleased in terms of video results, but the annoying 4K60p crop makes me think of comparing it to the FX30 60p no crop. The form factor would be the same but not the same sensor. What would be the best performance comparing A74 crop 4K60p to 4K 60p from FX30?
Loved your analysis. But I wish you would have spoke more about the low light capabilities. How bad or how good. Can you write back and tell me what to expect? Thanks....me
the low light is decent specially compared to other super35 sensors on the market. Sony has some pretty good sensor performances here with internal noise reduction. - 100/120fps the noise is average as it crops in on the sensor and noise appears larger and more noticable - second base of ISO2500 is not as high as the FX3 or A7SIII ISO 12,800. - if you need run and gun low light, A7Siii, FX3 and A7IV are really good options
Hello Jason, please help me regarding this. I got an FX30 last year . And some days ago while i was on a shoot my camera was recording , it suddenly made a flick noise and shut off and on in 3 seconds. It happned 3-4 times now. And when it comes back after the flick i have to press thr record button again to start recording. What is exactly happening and why can you olease tell me ?
now that the A9III has brought global shutter to the sony realm, I will bet global shutter is coming to other camers. Global shutter is still only fairly new to affordable mirrorless cameras so there is only time
Great camera for sure. Still waiting for Sony to send me one for review. Does any one know when the cows come home? That is when Sony said they would send me one.
I was shooting at a DJ show and saw a videographer also shooting on an FX3. I asked him what he thought about the FX30 and I've never seen someone shit all over a camera so fully and competely. What do you think of the FX30 for someone who shoots in the dark pretty often? I'm an FX3 and Sony fan boy I guess
Nice video!!! I love your content. I have a question, someone knows why when i turn on Cine EI in SLog3, i can't activate the embedded LUT? And when i use Manual still mode the airplane mode sticks in the middle.of the screen😢
I'm looking forward to the firmware update in September when Sony adds Shutter Angle to the FX30. While I don't shoot a lot of slow motion, having the ability to without jumping around the menu makes filmmaking a lot easier. Especially for run and gun situations.
it can be a bit of a life saver for some who are use to shuttle angle like me. With the FX6 i never change it and sometimes accidentally forget when going back to the FX30. So worth it there!
Hey Bro, I’m a Canon user but looking to move across to Sony as I’m over paying soo much for lenses. Would you recommend this or the ZVE-1 for an all rounder? I’m using it for TH-cam videos & Reels as well as some Church Photography etc. Thanks Jason
For me the lack of EVF is the killer. And at the point you are (1800usd) you may as well buy the zv-e1 that is just a little more if you are going to use an external monitor. And the a6700 doesn’t have dual card slots or the full size hdmi. Unlucky :c
Yeah EVF is a very controversial topic as a lot of new age videographers and cinematographers don't use EVF to monitor. This is mainly due to less people shoulder rigging where EVFs are extremely useful
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema and another point, (got back to this video, haha) If Sony where to make a small Evf(bit like the bm one) that could either get video feed from usb-c or hot shoe priced around 450 500 ish dollars that would sell like hotcakes. Shame they don't do that really. Or a third party one that's smaller than the current product made by portkeys. All this jabber kinda means please but in a good word for us to the guys at Sony.
A cinema camera that exposes using shutter speed rather than angle. That hilarious. Seriously Sony. Is this all you can come up with? This is not a cinema camera. It a video optimized hybrid
calling it APS-C instead of Super35 is bizarre, APS-C was never used for moving picture so it's an invalid format to compare to. Cine standards are not and never will be photography standards, likening them is silly. It's like comparing your car to a dumptruck. Your cars load capacity is ridiculously low, and it doesn't even have a proper hydraulics system, let alone a redundant one! Get outta here, your car is a crappy dumptruck man! No $hizz! Other than that the video is mostly fine I think, but it's a bit like defending something that is doing great as it is. Eejits online who don't even own a camera may criticize it. But they would anyway - after all it is not even up to the standards of the cameras on the Hubble space telescope man! I'm having fun with it, it's the first of this style for me, had "manlycams" for many years, aka things that make people think you're from TV news or a movie crew lol, so the FX30 being so small takes some getting used to. Still have my old bigger classic format cams but the FX30 is getting a lot more random use than the bigger stuff ever did simply because it is so small even rigged.
There’s only one reason to buy the FX 30 and that’s because you can’t afford the FX 3! Why would you want a dinky little sensor that is not nearly as sensitive to light is the big sensor. It’s the poor man’s FX 3! Personally, I’m waiting for the a7s4.
yes. I agree. FX3 is better in every single way. Most people buy the FX30 for the cheaper body and lenses. Full frame is just going to be more expensive all round

Hello there -- have a documentary looming. Ref. using the 'clear image zoom' with prime cinematic glass as opposed to using a PZ 16-35 -- which would you suggest? Cheers!
Does it have a mechanical shutter or is electronic?
Hi there Jason, my question to you, I own a couple of A74 and I´m very pleased in terms of video results, but the annoying 4K60p crop makes me think of comparing it to the FX30 60p no crop. The form factor would be the same but not the same sensor. What would be the best performance comparing A74 crop 4K60p to 4K 60p from FX30?
of course the a7IV will have better 4k60. Both have a crop, the fx30 is just always cropped
issue is over heat on the IV in 60fps
such an amazing review when I'm looking into fx30~
Ive shot 2 films and a music video on mine so far and its an amazing camera
love it
Shutter angle is added in an update in September I think.
yes! I cannot wait
Star Wars attack of the clones was filmed on the HDW-f900. When is enough, enough?
Jason love the video!! who makes the nato rail adapter on the grip side of your camera?????? thanks !!!
- 100/120fps the noise is average as it crops in on the sensor and noise appears larger and more noticable
- second base of ISO2500 is not as high as the FX3 or A7SIII ISO 12,800.
I bought one and made my ROI in less than a month. This camera is incredible for the price! I feel like I robbed Sony.
What a win 🔥
Max Holloway brother
I wish sony would do a Sony Fx35 global shutter 20mp with better lowlight capabilities. Less noisy would be great. But fx30 is a great camera.
now that the A9III has brought global shutter to the sony realm, I will bet global shutter is coming to other camers. Global shutter is still only fairly new to affordable mirrorless cameras so there is only time
When streaming through usb c does it also charge the camera?
Yes but it’s a slow charge so essentially the battery depletes very slowly
yes. not very fast as the camera needs more power than you can supply it through the USB-C
It’s a good value for the FX30,however I do prefer the FX3.
I agree. FX3 is better in almost every single way. Just not affordable enough for some when considering lenses and body
Hi, what is the minimum shutter speed It will achieve during video recording?
I still don't know if to buy the FX30 oder the FX3 because most of the times i film at clubs and darker areas.
i would get the FX3 if you can. way better low light performance. or an A7SIII
What is the cage and handles you are using at 1:35?
What camera and lens was this shot on tho? Looks great!
a7iv + 24mm F1.4 gm
Great camera for sure. Still waiting for Sony to send me one for review. Does any one know when the cows come home? That is when Sony said they would send me one.
cows are home! Send this man a review copy asap! @sonyalpha
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Lol thanks
Jason could you make a Shutter Angle Guide?
how so? What would you like to know?
I was shooting at a DJ show and saw a videographer also shooting on an FX3. I asked him what he thought about the FX30 and I've never seen someone shit all over a camera so fully and competely. What do you think of the FX30 for someone who shoots in the dark pretty often? I'm an FX3 and Sony fan boy I guess
FX3 is much better for low light. Thata sensor was made for high sensitivity situations
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I always appreciate the time you take to answer my questions ❤️ sounds like I just gotta spend the money 🤷
Nice video!!! I love your content.
I have a question, someone knows why when i turn on Cine EI in SLog3, i can't activate the embedded LUT?
And when i use Manual still mode the airplane mode sticks in the middle.of the screen😢
Yeah I've heard some people ask about the plane more. Not sure on that one. With the selected LUT maybe try toggle MLUT to on
Can you compare lumix s5iix and fx30? Which one to go for...?
I would love to but Lumix has not offered a loan copy for me
I'm looking forward to the firmware update in September when Sony adds Shutter Angle to the FX30.
Made same video for a6700 too
Hey Bro, I’m a Canon user but looking to move across to Sony as I’m over paying soo much for lenses. Would you recommend this or the ZVE-1 for an all rounder? I’m using it for TH-cam videos & Reels as well as some Church Photography etc. Thanks Jason
ZV-line are the worst cameras you can buy
It’s still a hard buy when there’s a LUMIX s5iix
Unpopular fact 😂
3:23 allows hidden filming
For me the lack of EVF is the killer. And at the point you are (1800usd) you may as well buy the zv-e1 that is just a little more if you are going to use an external monitor. And the a6700 doesn’t have dual card slots or the full size hdmi. Unlucky :c
Yeah EVF is a very controversial topic as a lot of new age videographers and cinematographers don't use EVF to monitor. This is mainly due to less people shoulder rigging where EVFs are extremely useful
Worth it? Yes full stop
YES!
All this jabber kinda means please but in a good word for us to the guys at Sony.
i sold mine after 6months because of the low light perfomance
certainly isn't as powerful as the a7s line or FX3
Full frame is just going to be more expensive all round
i just f hate aps-c they are trash only good for wedding or pictures definitely not for video specially with that 1.5 crop at 4k it makes no sense
