You're stuff is very consistently insightful/offers new stuff I haven't seen in anything else (your book in particular). Having the sort of check of curiosity/authenticity/warmth to sort of restrict post event rumination seems very useful and helps more then the sort of "just dont do it" attitude I've had before.
Hey Dr. Smithyman, first off, thanks so much for pouring your time and effort into these videos, they are awesome. It's interesting, based on the photos you included in the video it looks like the Trader Joes you went to was the one in Union Square. I used to live near there a few years back, so I've been to that store a hundred times over. I can't help but think of how many safety behaviors I've done in that very store. Constantly staring at my phone to avoid having to strike up conversation. Skipping an aisle to avoid bumping into people and potentially creating an awkward situation. Needlessly apologizing for everything. The list could go on forever. Anyway, I'm finally starting to crawl out of this pattern of behavior. Slowly but surely, progress will be made. Thanks again, please take care.
Thanks so much for all this. I’m glad you’re appreciating the extra effort, I’m really trying to make it more engaging for people so it’ll be easier to benefit from. Happy to hear you’re working on things :)
Hey I’ve just discovered you TH-cam account but have gone through some of your videos and really love your content. I’ve been seeing a CBT therapist for a few months and I’ve made progress but I’m current having a really motivational burst the past few days and trying to test myself in so many ways. The biggest thing for me is how much I hide my social anxiety and I’m learning to drop my social anxiety masking and to be my authentic self. It’s hard at times because of my masking behaviours have become almost automatic like forced laughing and smiling when I don’t actually find it funny etc. I really resonated with what you said about being curious, warmth and of course being your authentic self. Your videos seem like such a plethora of knowlede and thank your for helping with social anxiety.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this feedback. I’m so happy you connected with the idea of curiosity, warmth, and authentic self-confidence-it’s at the heart of how I understand life and the social world.
My authentic self is very quiet, serious, introverted so I feel my authentic self is somewhat putting, boring or very forgettable, should you still be authentic in a work setting or should you put on some sort of front, fake confidence a bit?
I certainly encourage people who are quiet and introverted to be authentic and true to themselves. People tend to care a lot more about whether we’re curious and warm towards them than how extroverted we are. And we can be warm and curious in a quiet or subtle way
💯. I am chatty and warm. I really do like like quiet, diligent, people who are genuine and have their own warmth. There is a real strength to staying true to your self. Not every quiet person is warm and compassionate bur the ones who are, it’s a real steadiness and a strength.
Thank you
