Fun fact about Meme Run: the reason why it got on the system in the first place is becuase the creator basically begged Nintendo to put it on like 8 times, and then they finally caved. This makes it even funnier that it got delisted for the Troll Face tbh

The eShop had some awesome highlights, but it was 90% trash.
Most worthwhile eshop exclusives (mutant muds, gunman clive, Shantae, Gunvolt, etc.) have been ported to switch or PC by now. There are some that haven't and are definitely worth checking out if you have CFW installed, like Harmoknight, Pocket Card Jockey, Dillon's Rolling Western, Sakura Samurai, Dementium 3d, Moon Chronicles, Sega 3D Classics, and the Guild compilations, but those are only a handful of the whole eshop library.

Looking back on AntDude’s previous forays into the eShop bottom of the barrel is interesting, especially considering how many he compared to high school/college level projects. Because I have a feeling at least some of these _were._

I’ve been working on it since my senior year of high school and I sort of empathize with some of these projects, because a few of them show a little, tiny bit of promise from the developer for improvement.
Like, I’m sure my game will certainly be no Madden 08 or Gex (and I will most likely not be charging money for it), but the reason I’m making it and putting it out there is so I can improve and make better games in the future.

Anyone ever try Block Form? I recently got a New 3DS XL to mod it and was curious about some of the New-exclusive games. One of them was Block Form, and it’s literally nothing more than the default Unity environment with a start menu and a cube as a playable character.
I’ve used Unity myself in a college-level Game Dev class, and Block Form could be thrown together by a single student in an hour tops, like it’s so low-effort that all you’d have to do is create a new project and write a short PlayerController script, maybe attach a RigidBody component to it, and that is Block Form

So I can shed the tiniest pinhole of light as to why there were so many questionable quality "indie" games on the Wii U shop at least. I'm speaking as someone who had a Wii U Dev kit back in roughly 2012, and aspirations to develop on it. I guess I was also a member of the indie initiative for a little while.
First, they were heavily pushing an older version of Unity branched off from the main engine as the primary tool you would be using to develop on the Wii U. It was a few versions before Unity made some heavy QOL changes and upgrades to the engine, and it was very clunky. If you weren't developing using this old version of Unity, you were programming in some weird version of Javascript.
Second, the dev kit was an absolute *bastard* to set up. I say this as an IT professional for 15 years. I got blindly lucky that the motherboard I had on my computer at the time possessed two ethernet ports, which ended up being how I had the dev kit connected into my machine. Nintendo's indie program (at the time lead by Dan Adelman doing everything he could before eventually leaving Nintendo) was extremely unresponsive when it came to support, with the initial setup thread on the private forum having over 10 pages of back and forth technical questions related to just getting the thing working.
While I'm still sad I don't think the Wii U ended up reaching the success I thought it capable of, it's not like I was able to contribute to the brighter future. Wouldn't you know it, making your ideas into reality is hard, especially when you see the writing on the wall for the ailing console you're designing the controls and gameplay around.

Daikon Set is actually part of a 4 game series on the 3ds and Wii U. Tbh I think they're good for what they are, I honestly love stupid simple games, and I mean Daikon Set is (or was) literally free.
Fun fact, one game in that series was sold for 2 cents since launch, and while it's another simple one note game, the reason I found it particularly amusing is bc it has an absolutely absurd file size. It's bigger than some proper Nintendo first party stuff. Which is incredibly damning given the 3DS has such small storage and doesn't (officially) support any sd cards larger than 32GB.

Bird Mania had a fierce competitive scene, I’ll let you know.
Also I actually quite enjoyed The Magic Hammer. The main point of the game is to get blocks from the graveyards to restore the plazas in the various towns, to power up the hammer. It was a simple gameplay loop, but it kind of works for me.

    • @mightbeanerd
      @mightbeanerd ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@AbeM. Well, from what you told said in your original comment, it sounds similar.
From what you said, Magic Hammer is about going to those graveyards, fighting a few enemies, and then grabbing things to restore a town which powers you up.
Soul Blazer is a series of games for the SNES (although they all have different titles,) where there's 5 or 6 empty towns with nothing in them, and you have to go into a dungeon, fight enemies, level up, and when you defeat all the enemies in a certain area, some part of town will be restored. You restore buildings, people, maybe a passage to a new weapon or item, things like that. The combat itself is kinda like old top down Zelda games.
Dark Cloud is a ps2 rpg by level 5. It's pretty similar, there's a few empty towns you get to, you go into dungeons, and find items to restore the town. Only difference this time is you actually place the houses and whatnot yourself, so it has a city builder aspect. The combat hasn't aged very well, although there are multiple playable characters if you're into that.
Overall I just thought you might be interested in them if you like gameplay loops like that, the biggest problems with both games is that they've all aged quite a bit, I honestly have trouble playing the first Dark Cloud in this day and age. And you have to like pixel graphics for the Soul Blazer games.

Not even kidding, it was still factory sealed, the box looked more or less pristine, and it was being sold for five frigging pounds.
