In reality - there was a lot of folks who had a 3DS but did not a Wii U. Everyone knows that, and I'm a worthless bastard for saying this though, and will probably be humiliated by somebody below me for even uttering this.
To be fair, emulating games (and their respective Systems + OS) accurately does take quite a lot of power compared to a straight port made for that console (even if it's a demanding game like Hyrule Warriors). Not that Super Nintendo games would be much of a challenge for 3DS hardware, but the system could struggle with DS games for example if it wasn't backwards compatible and didn't have the DS-CPU built in just for that.
@@JubertMathias The problem with GBA on 3ds is that it runs natively. Which while it's good for performance and compatibility, doesn't allow for features like suspend, restore points (save states), and extra goodies that most VC titles have. Though there is a software emulator for GBA that's unused likely due to awful, sluggish performace.
As a WiiU and a 3DS owner, the 3DS kinda felt like a weird twisted portable WiiU. Tons of games that are similar to WiiU games or just straight up ported games. Just kinda makes the WiiU feel less like a joke, and more like a clown
To be fair I always favored my 3DS over my Wii U and had far more games for the former than the latter, so to take the few good games the Wii U had and put them on the system I was more fond of was a win win for me.
Tbf, they were going to do cross buying on wiiu and 3ds, where when you buy a game on the wiiu, then you'll be able to download them for free on 3ds, like they did with minis March again wiiu (to which you'd receive a free copy for the 3ds).

The Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy (apart from Rise from the Ashes) are technically GBA games and the actual DS entries like Apollo Justice didn't release on Wii for some reason, but yeah I would love for him to talk about Ace Attorney. Apparently those ports are very much overlooked and Scott seems to like Ace Attorney but somehow hasn't talked much about the games at all (as opposed to countless Nintendo games he brought up numerous times).
Yeah 3DS was my primary gaming tool during this time, so I enjoyed the hell out of the likes of Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros no matter how compromised they were on the handheld.
Scott doesn't know the torture of only having a 3DS to play Hyrule Warriors... And by torture, I actually mean pure joy because Hyrule Warriors actually plays great for the system. I say that 100% unironically
@@alex_-yz9toIronically Digital Foundry tested the New 3DS version and found that it had a more stable framerate than the Wii U version (30fps to like 22fps). On an Old 3DS it was rough but on a New 3DS you were fine.
Agreed, was great for the time and I enjoyed the hell out of it, That said, yeah, no reason to go back to it now especially with the definitive edition on Switch.

Never forget the Skylanders games on 3DS which were their own unique platformer fighters like Crash/Spyro. Very underrated and a cool little side adventure to the console versions.
Yeah the glasses free 3d on the 3ds still amazes me today so clever how it tricks your eyes into think you are looking at a 3d image remember it worked pretty good on Lego city undercover the chase begins where if you climbed a high tower of building the image really stood out from the screen - will always remember the first time I tried a 3ds with the 3d feature to me one of the most revolutionary features I’ve seen in a console
Here's a weird one that technically doesnt count: around 2013(?) Hideki Kamiya said that he wanted to make a Bayonetta spin off on 3DS starring Jeanne. Obviously it never came to fruition, but in Bayo 3 there's those weird Jeanne missions that seem exactly like what he envisioned

Quick shoutout to Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. The 2019 3ds port of a 2010 Wii game that has tons of new content for some reason and is the definitive version released on a system when its successor was already 2 years old.

Captain Toad is no joke, genuinely one of the most graphically and technically impressive 3DS games I've ever come across. Just "one of" that is. Because I think the "graphically" and "technically" most impressive titles on the 3DS still belongs to the slew of Capcom games on the tiny system. Kid Icarus Uprising also still looks pretty damn impressive _but Nintendo apparently has dementia about this game ever existing._
Shovel Knight is great on 3DS. Yacht Club gave it a deep discount before the eshop closed and I got it for under $5, which includes all 4 campaigns. It lacks Showdown, but the 3D layering of sprites and backgrounds is beautiful to look at.
I think they excluded the Mystery Mushroom from Mario Maker for 3DS because it includes third-party characters (Shaun the Sheep is the one I remember the most vividly) and they'd have to re-obtain the licensing for all of them if they wanted to include the feature in a port of the game
Whenever I look back on the Wii U era I’m reminded just how little I actually played it in comparison to the 3DS, which is surprising because I was deep in denial over the Wii U’s place in the market. Makes me wish I swallowed my pride and gave the PS4 a shot sooner.
I know this is a different thing, but I would also like too mention 3DS that should get Switch ports. Many fans think it would be sad if some of the best 3DS games would just die and be forgotten with the 3DS. Some games that fans really want include: A Link between worlds, Kid Icarus Uprising, the 3D remakes of the Zelda N64 games, and many more. This could also make for interesting video in the future.
To this day, I still feel like they should have ported _Star Fox Zero_ to the 3DS. The wonky control scheme could've easily been solved entirely through the 3DS' features. The top screen could be the standard third-person view for the ship while the bottom screen would emulate the first-person view from the Wii-U gamepad, and if you wanted to keep the motion controls intact aiming could be handled through the 3DS' gyro controls. It was honestly a missed opportunity and it's unfortunate that Zero has been left to languish on the Wii-U for almost a decade now.
I remember trying to use Mario Maker for 3DS to try and help clear uncleared levels before the Wii U and 3DS servers shut down kinda knowing full well that course mode would be an uphill battle. (because I don't have a Wii U) I joined the Team 0% discord server only to be immediately be told that clearing a level on 3DS doesn't translate to a clear on Wii U I left wishing telling the dude who broke the news to me that I'd be cheering from afar
I'm sad they put the port of Woolly World on 3DS instead of Switch. Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World could have helped the Switch's launch lineup which really had no standouts besides Zelda. Unless they make another port you have to choose between graphics and content.
Really thought there would of been a section about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate being on both Wii U and 3DS and having the ability to play between both systems. I always thought the Monster Hunter games had really cool functionality on nintendos systems though in all reality Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is actually a 3DS game on the WIIU.
I know these types of ports often comes out bad, but I used to love when they tried to put big console games onto handhelds. It was just weird and fun lol.
I got Mario Maker 3ds the day it released, and literally returned it the same day when I found out I couldn't use online features. It felt like a waste of time to build anything on it
Wasn't Scott's complaint about NES Remix 2 was that it featured too many heavy hitter titles, and that the original was better for featuring more obscure games

Honestly looking back, I'm surprised SMM didn't begin life as a DSiWare title or something. Like a more scaled down version that just had SMB1 graphics. If it still online sharing it would've huge. Not sure Nintendo waited until Wii U.
Poochy and yoshis wooly world is an incredible game for kids. I had the wii u game and got a young family member the 3ds game. They loved every single feature, that i didn't even know that version had! Crafting custom yoshis, letting them use my amiibo for the costumes, playing the poochy levels, and watching the yarn yoshi skits that were included. It kept them entertained for months and me too a bit when they asked for a little help. Absolutely the definitive version for kids, for adults, the extras obviously wont do much for you but it does give you portability, so its just preference at that point
When talking about the tangential games to the subject, I expected Scott to talk about Rodea the Sky Soldier, since that was a 3DS game ported to Wii U, but I suppose that’s the opposite of what this video’s about lol
I didn't own a Wii U so I got the 3DS Hyrule Warriors and had a good ass time? But I noticed on a regular 3DS it physically couldn't load enough enemies, which was a HUGE problem for missions where you had to kill 1,000 enemies in a time limit or whatever. And sometimes it would spawn them all in a straight line. On a New 3DS it's powerful enough to handle more stuff on screen and fixed most of the issues. It also held my attention for a long time until the Switch Definitive Edition came out and made it completely obsolete lol
Kirby’s Epic Yarn which was originally a Wii game actually was better on the 3DS! Also I feel that Super Smash Bros 3DS was the best port from Wii U, since it was made for handheld multiplayer and even had cross play with Wii U, although it’s mostly it’s own game!
NES Remix Pack is exactly what Nintendo did with Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort (a bundle that that included a menu that would lets you launch into either of the games on the disk).
I realized at exactly at 5:55 in this video that I have nostalgia for the Wii U era now Oh god I blame the NES Remix that was on the EShop for awhile and that every Nintendo youtuber used Also, Mario Maker 3DS feels like a Homebrew port If it was, it would he the coolest thing of all time but since it was full price, it is absolutely stupid
mario maker 3ds likely didn't include the amiibo costumes because all of the voice/sound clips for all the characters would take a massive toll on the small capacity of the cartridge still my least favorite 3ds game though
Great video. I have an only ever experienced Mario Maker 1 with the 3ds version so I have a bias for it. One example you forgot was Mario VS. Donkey Kong Tipping Stars. The interesting thing about that one was that it had cross buy between the two versions

These Stash channels have a great format. The full reviews with cutaways and every prop you could ever need are fantastic, but these don't feel like the "lesser" version.
I think for games like hyrule warriors legends they added more features to some of the 3ds ports because they had to make up for the fact that some of them were bad because they were on something weaker than the wii u which was where they were made first
It’s really funny how a lot of my 3ds games I had were of Wii U games and I never had a Wii U so it worked on me as a kid. I played the crap out of hyrule warriors on 3ds 😭
I never unlocked all the course objects in Mario Maker for 3DS because I got stuck on 8-1 in the Challenge Worlds… and I can’t be bothered to go back and try finishing the Challenge Worlds because Mario Maker 2 exists
When you think about it, the Switch was sort of the solution to Nintendo's problem with the 3DS and Wii U. They didnt need to bother porting their console games to their handheld, the switch was both.
Hyrule warriors legends for the original 3ds is what got me into warriors games in the first place! I even got the switch version because of my love for it.
To be fair, Hyrule Warriors Legends was how I first played Hyrule Warriors. I picked up the DE on Switch eventually, but Legends was still a good time despite how much had to be stripped or cut to get it to work.

i used to play hyrule warriors CONSTANTLY on the 3ds, definitely one of my favorites on there

Honestly looking back, I'm surprised SMM didn't begin life as a DSiWare title or something. Like a more scaled down version that just had SMB1 graphics. If it still online sharing it would've huge. Not sure Nintendo waited until Wii U.

Poochy and yoshis wooly world is an incredible game for kids. I had the wii u game and got a young family member the 3ds game. They loved every single feature, that i didn't even know that version had! Crafting custom yoshis, letting them use my amiibo for the costumes, playing the poochy levels, and watching the yarn yoshi skits that were included. It kept them entertained for months and me too a bit when they asked for a little help. Absolutely the definitive version for kids, for adults, the extras obviously wont do much for you but it does give you portability, so its just preference at that point
When talking about the tangential games to the subject, I expected Scott to talk about Rodea the Sky Soldier, since that was a 3DS game ported to Wii U, but I suppose that’s the opposite of what this video’s about lol
I didn't own a Wii U so I got the 3DS Hyrule Warriors and had a good ass time? But I noticed on a regular 3DS it physically couldn't load enough enemies, which was a HUGE problem for missions where you had to kill 1,000 enemies in a time limit or whatever. And sometimes it would spawn them all in a straight line. On a New 3DS it's powerful enough to handle more stuff on screen and fixed most of the issues. It also held my attention for a long time until the Switch Definitive Edition came out and made it completely obsolete lol
Kirby’s Epic Yarn which was originally a Wii game actually was better on the 3DS! Also I feel that Super Smash Bros 3DS was the best port from Wii U, since it was made for handheld multiplayer and even had cross play with Wii U, although it’s mostly it’s own game!
I would have preferred a port of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse instead of Epic Yarn.

Warriors Legends was actually really good on New N3DS, although I never tried WiiU/Switch versions. Had a lot of fun playing it

NES Remix Pack is exactly what Nintendo did with Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort (a bundle that that included a menu that would lets you launch into either of the games on the disk).
I realized at exactly at 5:55 in this video that I have nostalgia for the Wii U era now

mario maker 3ds likely didn't include the amiibo costumes because all of the voice/sound clips for all the characters would take a massive toll on the small capacity of the cartridge

One example you forgot was Mario VS. Donkey Kong Tipping Stars. The interesting thing about that one was that it had cross buy between the two versions

same, and splatoon. they really pushed out their two best titles in 2015 huh

These Stash channels have a great format. The full reviews with cutaways and every prop you could ever need are fantastic, but these don't feel like the "lesser" version.

Mario & Sonic at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for the 3DS has an exclusive story mode campaign, and is therefore the superior version for solo players.
I think for games like hyrule warriors legends they added more features to some of the 3ds ports because they had to make up for the fact that some of them were bad because they were on something weaker than the wii u which was where they were made first
I loved Mario Party the top 100, but was upset at the time that it wasn’t on a console.
I hope they port Woolly World to Switch one day.
It’s really funny how a lot of my 3ds games I had were of Wii U games and I never had a Wii U so it worked on me as a kid. I played the crap out of hyrule warriors on 3ds 😭

I never unlocked all the course objects in Mario Maker for 3DS because I got stuck on 8-1 in the Challenge Worlds… and I can’t be bothered to go back and try finishing the Challenge Worlds because Mario Maker 2 exists
When you think about it, the Switch was sort of the solution to Nintendo's problem with the 3DS and Wii U. They didnt need to bother porting their console games to their handheld, the switch was both.
The other console Nintendo used before the switch to make sure the titles they worked on aren’t stuck on their worst selling console, the Wii U .
Hyrule warriors legends for the original 3ds is what got me into warriors games in the first place! I even got the switch version because of my love for it.
To be fair, Hyrule Warriors Legends was how I first played Hyrule Warriors. I picked up the DE on Switch eventually, but Legends was still a good time despite how much had to be stripped or cut to get it to work.
