From the Game Gear and Game Boy Advance to the Didj, game.com, and even old phones, Sonic has appeared in a lot of different games in a lot of different ways. It’s an insane history, so let’s go over it!

by a technicality, Sonic 4 *is* a mobile game, as it was originally developed as "Sonic The Portable" for iphones and android devices
It was also originally named Sonic the Mobile
@@kingstongamer10 i dont think it was, no
Sadly, they changed it .
@@arekrekas213no
It was Sonic the portabile
@@Phantal_ that's not even a word!

Actually, the witch villain and her crew actually returned recently on a comicbook made for Tails, some of them even got slight redesigns! 💛
Thank you for mentioning this, and nice pfp, Scott is cool
I know Carrotia was in the Archie's a couple times. Did the IDWs bring those guys back?
Thank you very much for the mention of the Sonic SMS Remakes made by me and Creative Araya. We truly appreciate it! Also we would like to recall to those that might read that these Remakes are not meant to be 1:1 remakes, but rather reinterpretation of what we thought these games could and should have been in modern times :)
Keep up the fantastic work Antdude!
Oh cool
Easy sub. thank you for your work❤
So those are reimaginings?
@@spongebobfan78 duh
Yes, they are. The idea was never to make a 1:1 remake. Rather to make some simple Sonic platformer games based on these titles with Android being the main focus as a platform.
The murder of Sonic wasn't too bad, really. The art was good and it's free. Had a nice twist, too.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
I thought that since it was in April fool's game that they were going to actually kill Sonic.
Wasnt too Bad? It was one of the Best Sonic games i have played in recent times
Had a bunch of fun character development to add onto upcoming games, shows, and comics too :)
@@bland9876I liked the murder mystery storyline. Pretty funny later for Sonic to be shaking his fist at ‘spoiler’ for being so foolish to go along with how serious everything got so easily lol (he wasn’t quite so angry btw, just blown away by the stupidity of this stunt and now had ammo to tease his friends with)
Final area was a bit of a nightmare tho, not being able to save between stages certainly didn't help because by the end my brain was starting to shut down from monotony.
.. and I'm a tohou player so that speaks volumes
Right on time , when you need Ant the most
yes
Yep.
@@Gamingmouse64yeah
what's so special about right now? don't we ALWAYS need Ant? :D
I peeled off he smiled
Fun fact about that mobile Unleashed game, the stage graphics for Apotos got used for a custom level in Sonic Mania, which I THINK was reconstrued as a Water Palace level. Which is made funnier by another Rush 3D, another fangame, also connecting Apotos to Water Palace (literally, it bleeds from the Unleashed stage into a remade Water Palace and it's so cool). Funny how that happened twice. Those background assets had no right being that good for a J2ME game.
The DS Sonic games were a JAM, i loved Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Colours so much (also i'll say that Hideki Naganuma's music was a jam like always)
But were they as much of a JAM as SONIC JAM?
@@BinglesP i cant believe jam got completely skipped.
it makes sonic 1 gba look like sonic mania compared to it.
@@BinglesP
Well the menus for Classic Collection on DS do use the Jam OST, so... yes?
Come on and slam@@BinglesP
The Handheld Sonic Games are honestly weird to me but them existing is important, they did introduce some important stuff to the franchise, The Advance games and Pocket Adventure are my favorite
and Fang the Sniper is still my personal favorite sonic character
glad to see him returning in Superstars
He's called Fang the Hunter now
@@maxenswlfr1877 Hey, he's at least still called Fang.
Nah true fans still call him fang the sniper
Haven't watched the video yet but I'm excited to see when Sonic's hand gets held! :)
10:34
Actually, there is now Fang the Hunter for a name. Sega says the constant name changes is probably just so he could better avoid the law due to being a wanted Jerboa/wolf hybrid.
Origins Plus finally gives me an excuse to try out the GameGear Sonic titles. Too bad Pocket Adventure didn’t make the cut.
It's a shame because Pocket Adventure quite honestly blows them out of the water, it's really impressive for what it is. (Though admittedly, it's a 16-bit system as opposed to the 8-bit Game Gear, but still.)
Certain aspects of Sonic Runners still sounds like a fever dream.
Mainly because of the fact that you could unlock and play as *Mephiles the Dark* and have him glide alongside Erazor Djinn and Reala.
Yeah, so for a long time Sonic Runners was given "soft-launch" release meaning a select few folks would get the chance to play the game early before its official global release. However, during the soft-launch tons of events were underway, some of which were actually crossover events either promoting a specific SEGA game at the time or celebrating the anniversary of a specific SEGA series.
While some events *did* get repeats, others didn't. Meaning some of the buddies you could unlock from those events were permanently unavailable. This goes double for specific characters.
Throughout Sonic Runners life more and more playable characters were added. Some were reskins, others were brand new to the game.
The game itself followed the Sonic Heroes formula with three class types and each character fitting those types with varying reasonablity.
Speed type characters had a triple jump and typically are the more balanced class type compared to other class types.
Power type characters had a dash attack followed by an extra jump, a bit unruly at times but the only class that could break super badniks and special blocks/walls that often act as obstacles requiring non power type characters to either launch out of a cannon or via Rainbow Rings or to avoid all together, failure to do so results in the current run ending.
Fly type characters could fly/float in the air for a limited time, allowing access to routes other class types would struggle to get to.
The class type goes double for both buddies and stages. The effects a buddy had would become better when used with a character of the same type.
Aside from special stages, each of the main stages were tailored to a specific class type. Windy Hill = Speed type, Sky Road = Fly Type and Lava Mountain = Power type.
While it is possible to use other types in each stage, doing so made the stage a bit more challenging due to the unique jump/attributes each class type has.
On top of main class type each character as a sub-class that dictates what bonuses each character had. There were eight sub-classes for each character. Hero, Dark, Chaotix, Rose, Mech, Easy, Wild and Future.
Like previous mentioned, Sonic Runners had crossover events that happened during the soft-launch. The following crossover events were the following.
Fantasy Star Online 2, PuyoPuyo!!, NiGHTS into Dreams and Fantasy Zone.
Other events allowed you to earn previous characters and items from the Sonic series either as playable characters or buddies and were given special hidden bonuses/properties only active during those specific events.
Some time *way* after the game's cancellation fans revived it under the name "Sonic Runners Revival" which is still under active development to try and add back previous events and features that no longer function. The game is up and running and can be played right now, don't get me wrong. But it's pretty obvious there are still some things missing.
On top of restoring old events certain things were changed like character sub-types and their bonuses.
Example; Cream the Rabbit, Big the Cat and the initial release of Silver the Hedgehog were all given the sub-class "Easy", making playing the game much more easier (duh) by reducing the game's speed by 10% but cuts the total score by 20% as a tradeoff, because of this drawback it made them extremely unreliable during daily battles and the main campaign back in the day. Both Cream and Big were changed to the Rose sub-class while the first release of Sliver was changed to Future in an update making it possible to use two different versions of Silver at the same time without needing to worry about the score being cut by 20% during each run.

Sonic Advance 3 is not only the best game out of trilogy but also one of my favorite 2D Sonic games
Its so good!! Minus Twinkle Snow's boss.

@@turboshazed7370well, it gets easy once you realize you have alot more time to stand on the platform than you think, but dam that spikeball
The Tails games have been referenced quite a lot in the comics. Even did a similar joke with Dr Fukurukov.
Let me tell you guys: the Sonic Advance trilogy and Rush duology were my childhood and will always hold a special place in my heart🤗
As glad as I am to have Sonic Superstars right around the bend, I would just love for Sega and Sonic Team to give us a new Modern 2D game: granted that's mostly because I'd also love to play as Blaze and Cream again, but that's neither here nor there☺️
The Advance games were _soooo_ good. They don’t get talked about enough.
@@BareBandSubscription Agreed 💯
Played Sonic Advance for the first time about a week ago and I love it, would love to see it and the rest of the games get Ported in a collection to modern systems.
In widescreen, most importantly.
That's what I've been saying. Every time I see a sonic game collection, I mentally scream, "Sega?! Why can't you do that for the handheld games? Just pay thq the money and put them on a collection with all the other portable games?! Sega has the money to do so! The people need to play the advance games on modern hardware!"
@@fodv93 The fault lies with THQ. They helped with releasing the games outside of Japan and hold some weird legal rights to it. All three Advance games were on the Japanese Wii U eShop at one point with no problem, so~... yeah.
@@Pikatwig16 that's my point. Like Sega can just pay thq for the rights to do the advance trilogy. Hopefully this isn't the case for the rush games. For as much as we dunk on Sega with sonic nowadays, they're in no way financially low. With stuff like Bayonetta, persona, and other franchises, Sega has money in the bank.
@@fodv93And they just bought Rovio...
0:06 Using the prototype version of Carnival Night Zone I see. I always knew you had good taste, Antdude. Yes I legit think this is a better version of Carnival Night than the original Genesis version.
That's the Origins version, not the Prototype version. Do not filthy the name of my beloved prototype tracks with comparison to this trash.
I remember playing 8-Bit Sonic 1 online as a kid and I thought it was a Sonic game made for the NES rather than Master System or Game Gear. Would’ve been cool if Origins Plus had added Bridge, Jungle, and Sky Base zone to Sonic 1 as new stages.
15:00 Au contraire I believe Sonic Adventure is the true Sonic 4
0:38 It’s such a travesty that they didn’t look at the criticism for how the music was handled in 3 & Knuckles and thought to maybe use the later prototype music.
Also the Witch in Sky Patrol actually returned in a Tails centric comic last year.
Why would they add new stages. It doesn't make sense. It's just a remaster. Not a remake.
@@hedgethewedge Technically it's a remake seeing that the iOS remake of Sonic 1 and by extension Origins remakes Sonic 1 in a new engine
@@misterzygarde6431 Origins Sonic 1 is NOT a remake. It's just a port of the Retro Engine Version.
@@hedgethewedge It was a port of a remake. The very nature of the game is that it was a remake. It's like how people still refer to the remake of Resident Evil 1 that was remastered as the "RE1 Remake", as if they're still referring to the Gamecube release, instead of something like "RE1 Remake Remastered".
So because of Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, I managed to get really good at collecting the emeralds in Sonic 1 due to the crazy slowdown making the mazes easier to memorize. Sooooo, yay for that!
Confession time: As a kid… I loved Sonic genesis. I got a game boy micro in 2006. It was my first video game system and my mom got me Sonic genesis, it was fun. But after playing literally any other version later… I never looked back
I'm honestly really happy and equally terrified that I'm not the only one who remembers playing Go Sanic Goo!
From what I remember, it was actually a solid simplified version of Sonic Dash outside the memes, but otherwise it was just a mobile Sonic Dreams Collection-type "meme nightmare" fangame
Strangely he forgot to mention of the VMU that one is technically also a SEGA handheld that had unique games including two Chao games, also you’ve missed a bunch of iPhone games and other mobile games.
Tails Adventure is great once you get the cool items that make you faster and some projectiles, i think it’s main problem is that it takes time to understand the flow of the game and it can get confusing, especially if you put it down for a while
The "2.5D platformer fighting game" formula is something that no other game has ever tried, and I don't know why, it's such an interesting and novel concept that you'd think someone would've done a game based off of it by now, vastly improving it by polishing the (many) rough spots it had in Sonic Battle, and adding more depth to it, because I can see a lot of potential to be exploited there.
Uh, Smash Bros?
@@kylespevak6781 I didn't know you could move in the z axis in any smash game
@@kylespevak6781 Uh, wait, I think I left the 3d arenas out in the comment after editing it, my bad
If there's one thing that should be taken away when discussing Sonic Runners, it's that the soundtrack is a must listen. Composed by the same dude who did the soundtrack to Sonic Lost World, I'm not kidding when I say some of the songs compete for some of the best the series has to offer
The dude also composed Rhythm Thief before he did Lost World.
Good thing as have Revival
Considering that Jun'ichi Kanemaru (Sonic's Japanese VA) is (among other things) an English teacher, choosing Sonic as an English teaching figure for kids would make a lot of sense actually xD
The game on neo geo pocket color I think is incredibly impressive.
The thing I always remember most about the N-Gage was that X-Play always named it using a stock clip of one of the interns dressed as Picard shouting "Engage!"
AntDude being shocked that a game on the Leapster is an educational game was the funniest part lol but great video
It's nice to hear Triple Trouble without it being related to FNF.
The song still slaps though. Would've been funny if it were mentioned nonetheless.
Sonic Rush Adventure will forever hold a special place for me, it was my first ever DS game I ever got
Great video as always
Been meaning to catch up on all the handheld Sonic games for years now. Just never get around to them.
I didn’t think you’d even mention it, but seeing you mention the Java Sonic Jump made me happy as it was a part of my childhood 🥲
You just unlocked my memory of playing Sonic Unleashed on my Sony Ericsson and I love you for this
Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Battle, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rivals 2, and Colors DS - those games are the best handheld Sonic Games.
GBA Sonic sprites are gdamn iconic.
I’m so excited for this one, I love your channel and the mobile sonic games have always fascinated me!
I actually really enjoyed the murder of sonic the hedgehog. Played the game on livestream with friends and it was an absolute blast. Also it plays like shadow shoot except it's actually fun 🎉
0:20 yeah I agree Antdude…it still sucks that the Origins DLC is still forced on you to be downloaded instead of already coming in the cartridge or disc. But hey at least the extra content itself is still great.
Sonic on the Didj was actually my first ever Sonic game as a kid. It was something special.
21:44-21:50 “Ooh. Aah. Nice. Kill me. Aw, man. Oh, god. Oh, man! You know what? Not the worst thing.” Funniest recap ever. 😂
11:24
I just saw a game gear at my local thrift store and now I’m seeing this… I’m feeling like it’s a sign for me to get it.
I love how Sega sees people doing their job better and their first reaction is to hire them
Its great to see you making great content AntDude!
I know you're trying to discount it, but the Sega Nomad (handheld Genesis) was a very real handheld system. That means that all the Genesis games were also handheld games at that time.
It can be excluded for exactly the same reasons as the Steam Deck.
Sonic 1 on GameGear is still one of my favourites Sonic games. The graphics are beautiful and the music is just fantastic. Also Sonic 1 GG is better then the main Sonic 1.
Master System version clears
favorite
Speaking of Stealth and Taxman, I incidentially bore witness to the ENTIRE JOURNEY of getting Amy Rose playable in the classic games and the the inevitable return of Fang the JERBOA (Sniping's a good job, mate!). From the Mystical Forest Zone fourms to Sonic Retro, it was a very long road for the rascal to be playable again in any official capacity. Murder was also technically her game too, since you are helping her and Tails the entire time solve the mystery of Sonic's seemingly untimely demise.
Pocket Adventure is in some weird copyright limbo apparently. That's why is wasn't mentioned in the recent Sonic Encyclopedia or been re-released.
Incredible video as always! Was hoping to see the early iPod games in here too. Not sure how many were actually made, but I still have one of the gen3 ipod Nanos with a port of the original Sonic on it, and I was always amazed with how well it played
Yo, I LOVED Sonic Dash, Dash 2 and Forces Speed Battle for a long time when they each first came out! I really wish I could just wipe my memory of those games so I can experience the childhood magic all over again.
OH GOD IMAGINE IF THEY MADE A SPINBALL REMAKE IN THE RETRO ENGINE
Thanks for the content!
How did Anthony forget to include the Tiger Handheld games of Sonic 1, 2, 3, and 3D Blast?
It’s best we don’t talk about those.
AND A FEISTY LITTLE GUY CALLED KNUCKLES THAT CAN MAKE YOUR LIFE mIsErAbLe
Considering you mentioned the game gear games (And Sonic 1 Gba)'s fan made remakes/patches I'm pretty surprised you didn't mention Sonic Runners reloaded, which makes the game actually playable again! Along with more updates and characters (Ex Whisper and Tangle)
Oh man I thought they gave up after losing all their files but it seems like the game is still in development
Don't forget Sonic Runners Revival
Man, of all things in this video, it's such a shame Sonic Runners' soundtrack is just lost now. That game had absolutely stellar music, they should've included some of it in Sonic Frontiers' jukebox update.
It's isn't? The OST was released on a physical CD man
@@ultimate8125 I mean in any means where it can be heard during gameplay ._.
Its not gone. Its been fully decompiled and there's now fanmade servers running for it that are actually releasing new content. MattKC helped decompile the game to allow for this and made a video on it. th-cam.com/video/lJVGd7cBGuQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MattKC
The phone games! I remember having the Sonic 1 port at around 29:50 . My phone had an MMC card on it so I opened the game file on my PC and found out that the music for the game was stored as midi files. I replaced them with Megaman midis and played the game with a different soundtrack, haha good times
I will never understand anyone saying the Sonic 3 music in Sonic Origins is bad. Do I and would I prefer the original tracks be in Sonic Origins? Yes, but I also think that the redone prototype music they used in place of the originals are pretty good and serviceable enough to stand in place of the originals.
You know this game is good if antdude uploads
Such a great video as always
You and caddicarus really love that one image of the guy looking stupid while holding the engage
The most impressive part about the old mobile ports was that they were actually playable, for the limited resources they had to work with those devs somehow ported all of those games and they were fine. Although to this day I find it deeply weird that there was a competent version of Sonic Spinball on flip phones and that it was published by EA for some unexplainable reason.
BTW the very first version of Sonic Jump has a proper story, and it's apparently canon, also because it was designed around a phone keypad it was quite fun to play and the music was catchy... because that seems to be the only constant in this franchise.
They were garbage, you don't need to lie.
@@pafoneto1275 sure, in a vacuum they're nowhere near as good as the Genesis originals, but when you take into consideration the limitations of the platform and compare them in the context of the other J2ME platformer games available at the time they're fine. As I said, the mere fact that they managed to make them work without having to sacrifice much content or features while having them run in a wide variety of phones with very different hardware capabilities was kinda remarkable at the time, many mobile ports back then were complete trash or incredibly light in content and/or gameplay.
I wouldn't go back to play them nowadays because there's better alternatives, the Christian Whitehead ports are so incredibly superior that by comparison they're laughable, but back then it was the best a phone could offer. It's all about context.
And Sonic Jump was actually fun to play, there's a reason why they kept porting that one to newer phones for years. Although they did lose the Sonic Advance/Sonic X inspired art style in later versions, and with it its mid 2000's charm.
Tails Adventure is a legitimately great game
no way he slandered Speed Battle
it's genuinely fun as hell and WAYY different from Dash
Ty for acknowledging Race To Win AntDude very cool
Why do people still want sonic adventure 3 were already on 8
Fang has to be Sonic's most underutilised villain. His encounters in Triple Trouble were so memorable and unlike any other bossfights in the series due to him sabotaging his own schemes and usually fighting Sonic on a malfunctioning machine. For a brief moment in time, he really did seem like a regular among the cast, as much as Amy or Metal Sonic. Then after the 90's, nothing. Sonic Team would create redundant characters like Johnny, and also give Shadow a realistic gun and vehicles (despite guns and vehicles being Fang's whole thing).
They had plenty of opportunities to bring him back, like in Sonic Generations for DS, or Sonic Forces, or even Team Sonic Racing, considering his appearance in Sonic Drift 2, and his love of the Marvellous Queen airbike. He could've brought Bark and Bean with him, and made them an actual canonical trio, instead of just a couple of throwaway characters from a fighting game.
There was the Mania cameo, but... it wasn't really him, and it was one cameo having to share the spotlight with a bunch of others. Hardly the comeback this character deserved.
So yeah, you can imagine how happy I was to see Fang returning in a brand new mainline Sonic game as a major villain. Hopefully he's here to stay, and it means we'll eventually get to see a modern redesign of the character in a new fully-3D Sonic game.
HIS NAME IS NOT FANG IT'S NACK
I am a simple Sonic fan. I see Fang in the thumbnail, I am happy. 👏
Also thanks to the comics, I did actually know Doctor Fukurokov! I'm honestly glad they included the Battle Bird Armada in the comics.
Awesome video as always! ☆
Fun fact: apparently there are legal reasons keeping Sonic Pocket Adventure from even being mentioned in Sonic media, let alone rereleased.
Why
@@xsmith8475 We don't know, I imagine they won't say. Most likely something to do with SNK, who made the game. Which is a shame, considering they and Sega are buddy-buddy in Smash Bros.
Fun fact: Green Hills Zone (yes, with an s) in Sonic 2 8 bit was the main inspiration for the Japanese/European theme of Sonic CD, You Can Do Anything, also known as Toot Toot Sonic Warrior
Another fun fact: Mecha Green Hill Zone in Sonic Chaos is a remix of Green Hills Zone from Sonic 2 8 bit
I had that "versus" guide for Sonic advance and SA2 battle it was great that hit some nostalgia for me
When there's an Antdude video you know it's gonna be special
1:16 to be somewhat fair, I guess it’s because the Sega Genesis Classics collection is on all modern platforms as well and that has the 16-bit versions of Spinball and Mean Bean Machine
This makes me so glad I changed my mind about getting the DLC for Sonic Origins
Finally someone appreciates Sonic Battle.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Sonic 1 on the iPod. It's one of the most interesting Sonic 1 ports out there and it plays surprisingly well.
So you know how sonic superstars is introducing a new character Trip? Well along with fang returning and eggman, that's 3 villains like triple trouble. And also:
"Trip" le trouble. So clever I love it.
Been a while! Welcome back!
Thank you for the video.
Part of the reason I love Sonic 2 so much is because I played the Didj game when I was a toddler, then played Sonic 2 when I was like 12. It was legitimately my first nostalgic experience ever. Weird.
12:58 Very smooth editing, Ant.
I needed this
Disney Dreamlight Valley and Disney Speedstorm by Gameloft are genuinely pretty good!
Love your content keep it up 👍
Keep it up
a video about sonic official flash games would be so cool to see!
I remember thinking Sonic Blast's box art looked amazing. Even the screenshots looked great.
I never played it, but I think Sonic 3D Blast taught me that graphics aren't everything. I liked that game, but it was nowhere near the mainline Sonic games...
I know this isn’t a Kirby video but I just got to say I absolutely love watching your Kirby videos. Heck there were a lot of Kirby games that I didn’t even know about and now I’m going back to try to find them so that I can play them and I really enjoy that so thank you so much.😊
I cannot believe 26:14 is how I learned Crash On the Run was shut down and delisted in February.
I love Sonic battle so much, I bought 4 copies of it, 3 GBAs, and I have a GameCube+GameBoy Player and the linkcables needed for multiplayer play. My friends play with me often since I have it all haha!
32:56 Antdude talking Spanish gave me Peace
I can't wait for Sonic Fan Games next month too! 🎉🎉
27:58 Well it is one of my favorites, and i in fact play it more than DX, mostly because (even with the DLC) there is barely anything to do besides doing GP or goin random matches online. Also Time Trials...
I like the random refrences to archie that are just, only barely correct (like yeah, classic amy and rosey the rascal do look similar... but they are just not the same)
I actually played A LOT of the Sonic on SNES (still have the cartridge), and beat it a couple of times. The goal was to rescue a lot of "Mario"s, and at the end, Sonic and Mario become friends. So sweet.
FINALLY, someone talking about Sonic Battle!
Battle Supremacy
honestly, you got me there! i checked the time bar.
The fact no one called the N-Gage a “talk-o” is the biggest missed opportunity in the history of mobile devices.
I was able to get Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 recently. I got Sonic Battle last year. I wasn't looking for Pinball Party but I might get it when it shows up.
But for now I'm okay with having these Sonic GBA games with me playing directly on GBAs.
Ah yes, Sonic Adventure 7.
My favorite.
Oh shit! I have that sonic advance/sonic adventure 2 guide! I used to blow my friends' minds with that one. And the maps of the levels were so detailed and helpful.
I always thought the little vignettes in the stage titles for Sonic 2 GG were Sonic's memories of his adventures with Tails in that Zone.
"This hedgehog hole goes deep."
Just gonna clip that for future use, thanks Ant!
