I went to see Mary Kate star as the real Elphaba a couple weeks ago. And let me tell you, it was a dream coming to see Wicked, especially seeing Defying Gravity. I was waiting for so long to see this song live in person, it was a dream come true
@@badgamergirl6182she'd probably look for every bit of money, publicity, and opportunity she can get, so I don't think she'd ignore one of her biggest credits unless it directly conflicted with something else, which doesn't always happen
For those wondering: Jackie Burns, Alyssa Fox, Jenny Dinoia and Mary Kate Morrissey are the Elphies in this video. (ETA: These are in the end credits but I figured I’d post because a lot of people were asking.)
I always like seeing the similarities and differences between multiple people who have played the same character and appreciating what different performers contribute to a role, especially for live theatre, where you can have so many people play a character across many years that a show is running, and across multiple productions of the same show. This is a wonderful example of that!
I’ve always thought that the “tenured” Elphaba’s were the best. Jackie Burns is the longest running Elphaba on Broadway, Jenny DiNoia has played the part in almost all of the productions around the Globe (and has saved many shows as a standby), and Alyssa and MaryKate have played Elphie for a long time. This video shows why they’re the best! This is such a treat. It’s amazing and I love it!
This is quite possibly the best rendition of defying gravity I have ever heard. Was also kind of bittersweet as I saw the show 10 years ago and Jenny Dinoia was actually Elphaba at the time so it was cool to hear her sing this again ❤❤
Idina will always be my favorite Elphaba, but this was absolutely incredible. I couldn’t help but to cry when all four it that last note in unison. Congrats on 20 years, Wicked. I still have hope for the movie.
I can’t wait for the movie I feel like it would’ve been good if there was an ex elphaba to play her in the movie but I know Cynthia will do good. I think there might be a wicked pro shoot coming out tho
@@Potterholic1 yeah I could see one of them in that role, definitely Idina. I wish we had an ex elphie to play elphie like how they did the new version of mean girls, like they could do Jessica vosk or Jackie burns but I do like Cynthia and she will hopefully do us proud!
I am a grown ass man and this brought tears to my eyes. INCREDIBLE ARRANGEMENT !!!! I never had the privilege of watching this show Live. I call "Wicked" the best musical I've never seen lol. If I got to see this show on Broadway, or the West End, I would be defying gravity. ❤❤❤
i'm also a grown ass man who somehow has never seen this as well. its back in hometown for a limited engagement and tickets are sold out (unless I see it alone). will see it one day.
Live in NYC so it’s easy for me. Having experienced the show a number of times knowing what I know…if I lived elsewhere I’d definitely do what I could to see the show.
I don't know why but I just cried and felt butterflies in my stomach when they started holding hands😭Such a beautiful arrangement delivered by fantastic ladies 🥰
I am so impressed with how this rendition blends their voices! How is it that the strong vocal lines that we love so much fro this song are still powerful here and yet not overpowering? Crazy, unexplainably good. Who arranged this rendition?!?!?!?!
Can't believe its been 20yrs as this was a defining moment for so many of us New Yorkers back in the day. What an incredible homage to all the performers who have graced us with their gifts to defy gravity.
I saw Jackie Burns perform this live the first time I ever watched Wicked. I remember the CHILLLLSSS I got when she hit that last note and the staging, with the light on her and the elevation, just such an amazing moment in broadway.
This also goes to show that your singing voice develops over time, if anything these women got better at singing this song even if their on stage performances were spectacular.
Until yesterday I had no idea the 20th Broadway Anniversary was coming up. But this will be a time for me to celebrate. "Defying Gravity" may be the song, out of all the songs there are, that touches me the most. Because Elphaba describes how she reaches a turning point that I am still struggling to get to. It's not that I want to turn my back on society entirely, just for the price of emotional independence, but I sure hope to become way more confident about being okay the way I am, and not valuing other people's opinon on myself so high anymore. Being afraid of losing love you have actually already lost is indeed not a nice feeling. Thank you Mr. Schwartz for this most beautiful and meaningful song.
And just like that, I'm 15 again watching this show, my first show ever, on Broadway in Chicago. This is what made me fall in love with musical theatre. There is nothing else in this world that makes me feel the way this does.
First 'Popular' and now 'Defying Gravity'... you are spoiling us for the 20th anniversary! Thank you for all your efforts and caring in this show it's the most swankified of them all!
Absolutely... my thoughts exactly! I've been helping run the board at my church for nearly 2 decades, and I couldn't mix this so smoothly and elegantly to save my life!!!
I have seen Wicked only once (am from Eastern Europe) when I went to London. West End Apollo Theatre and Jenny DiNoia was Elphaba - it is still the absolute greatest theatre experience I've ever had. She is incredible.
I cried continuously seeing Wicked in Minneapolis. This song lifted my spirits and brought me through the trials of being a young adult. I cant stop the tears now, either!
I saw Alyssa Fox as Elphaba, she made me fall in love with the story of Wicked, I had never read the book or knew anything about Wicked Except it was the story of the Wicked Witch of the West.. to my surprise my mouth was wide open and I was so stunned I was in absolute tears!
This was wonderful! I do wish that Idina Menzel was involved though- I had the pleasure of seeing Wicked the year she won the Tony and to me she will always be Elphaba
Someone doesn't have to be the "best" to be your Elphie. I have seen a few.. my first was Eden Espinosa, loved her, she's MY Elphie. But I saw Fox this month and she is definitely fantastic!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! I didn’t think this song could ever be improved upon, but these ladies have given an epic performance that has my entire body tingling with happy goosebumps. Thank you so, so much. What a spectacular bright spot in the day. 🌞💚💚💚💚
My all time favourite musical… have watched it 9 times when I lived in London and it’s coming to Melbourne next year… can’t wait to make it 10 times! ❤ Love this song and this is such an amazing rendition ❤
Finally got to see Wicked on Broadway tonight, and it was my first on Broadway play. Seen Hamilton off on tour before but this is my first play on Broadway. Mary Kate Morrisey portrayed Elphaba, and she was absolutely stellar. Actually cried at the end of Act 1 for Defying Gravity. It was so beautiful, and I loved the whole show. It was so good
As a dad of two young girls (10 and 13) who love performing, and who coincidentally finally saw this last week in Sydney on the latest Australian production, I love how they love this song and show. It’s a great girl-power anthem.
I suspect the experience will stay with your daughters for a long time, Tristan. I saw Wicked with my daughter Grace in 2012. When she recently experienced some real heartache, she began listening again, at age 27, to "Defying Gravity" to boost her spirits. @@tristantristan4733

I love Idina Menzel, but I have seen her so many times singing Defying Gravity on professional recordings so I'm happy she was not singing in this video. I love getting to know the different tones and styles from the other Elphabas. They all emphasize different parts and act differently so they make the role their own and most of the videos of them are only clips from people recording the show. They deserve to be appreciated too.
Does anyone else appreciate how they sang the riff at the end in unison and as originally written? Such power in returning to what made this song great.
I saw Mandy Gonzalez, Donna Vivino, Christine Dwyer and Rachel Tucker. They were all incredible! Being so close to NYC I’ve seen more shows than I can count but Wicked was my first. Still going strong after 20 years!
I think that they purposely left out the originals so that they others could shine too. Lin did this too with "First Burn" where all the Elizas except for Pippa sang and it turned out so good. This arrangement was incredible and I would have loved to see Jackie as Elphaba. She speaks about that role with so much love that it would make Wicked that much more meaningful to me at least
