- More than 40 people have defied gravity and inspired us all over the last 20 years of WICKED on Broadway. Celebrate WICKED 20 with us as our current Elphaba, Alyssa Fox is joined by current Broadway Standby, Mary Kate Morrissey and former Elphabas Jackie Burns and Jenny DiNoia in a special rendition of "Defying Gravity." 🧹

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.
WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin-smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”
With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.”
The Gershwin Theatre on 50th Street and Broadway is that magical place. From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED-the untold true story of the Witches of Oz-transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

This is my Roman Empire
same here. i’ll be thinking about this video every waking hour for the rest of my life
...R.I.P world lol
Same dude ❤
You win the internet 🥇
Yes!!!!! ❤❤❤
Loved this arrangement. Part of me was hoping Idina would show up at the end.
Yea same, considering she has been in other promo for the 20th for Broadway!
Just over 17 years now in the West End!
Was waiting for them to part in the middle and for Idina to come out for the big vocal part.
Oh she’ll never stoop to this after going frozen.
Yes i hoped for Idina to join them
@@badgamergirl6182she'd probably look for every bit of money, publicity, and opportunity she can get, so I don't think she'd ignore one of her biggest credits unless it directly conflicted with something else, which doesn't always happen
I’ve always thought that the “tenured” Elphaba’s were the best. Jackie Burns is the longest running Elphaba on Broadway, Jenny DiNoia has played the part in almost all of the productions around the Globe (and has saved many shows as a standby), and Alyssa and MaryKate have played Elphie for a long time. This video shows why they’re the best! This is such a treat. It’s amazing and I love it!
Willemijn Verkaik is also amazing and falls in this category (I think she has-or had-the longest streak of playing the role, across productions)
Jemma Rix, too
it's amazing how they can find this level of talent year after year.
I think Jackie Burns was the most thrilling Elphaba l ever saw play the role. This is a very cool arrangement!
@@AuthorZaraHoffmanshe played elphie in three countries. Broadway ( I know that’s not a country) , Germany and The Netherlands 😊❤
The sisterhood. The vocals. The music. One of the greatest musicals ever made 😭
I don't know why but I just cried and felt butterflies in my stomach when they started holding hands😭Such a beautiful arrangement delivered by fantastic ladies 🥰
I love it when I see those who might think of each others as competitors instead be sisters!
Omg me too
This is quite possibly the best rendition of defying gravity I have ever heard. Was also kind of bittersweet as I saw the show 10 years ago and Jenny Dinoia was actually Elphaba at the time so it was cool to hear her sing this again ❤❤
I feel that. I saw it with Kristin and Idina haha. I’m old lol.
Check out Jessie J in her socks in her living room. This is good but THAT’S something to call best
The music is timeless.@@johnrizzotti4785
It definitely is
Have you heard of Morissette Amon's rendition?
Idina will always be my favorite Elphaba, but this was absolutely incredible. I couldn’t help but to cry when all four it that last note in unison. Congrats on 20 years, Wicked. I still have hope for the movie.
I can’t wait for the movie I feel like it would’ve been good if there was an ex elphaba to play her in the movie but I know Cynthia will do good. I think there might be a wicked pro shoot coming out tho
I always like seeing the similarities and differences between multiple people who have played the same character and appreciating what different performers contribute to a role, especially for live theatre, where you can have so many people play a character across many years that a show is running, and across multiple productions of the same show. This is a wonderful example of that!
For those wondering: Jackie Burns, Alyssa Fox, Jenny Dinoia and Mary Kate Morrissey are the Elphies in this video. (ETA: These are in the end credits but I figured I’d post because a lot of people were asking.)
Thank you for the names!
I love Mary Kate Morrissey. I saw her on tour, voice like butter.
thank youuuu
I wish they called Idina too. She's the OG though 😢
Thank you!
I'm obsessed with Mary Kate's "Well if that's love..." at 1:13
My favorite part too now lol
and the "never bring us down" at 2:21
2:30 is just ✨ chefs kiss✨
To anyone wondering what an eargasm is, you’ve just had one. Congratulations 🎉
What an amazing representation of Elphaba! Anyone have this on repeat?! 💚🖤
Lol no but they are amazing
i’m convinced half of these views is me 😂
1:21 I love the way Mary Kate Morrissey looks at Jenny DiNoia when she starts singing with her ❤
Wow! Whoever mixed/mastered this is a master audio engineer! ❤
Yes! The arrangement to make it for four is so good.
The arragement was mind blowing!
@@violapastuszyn1349
Absolutely... my thoughts exactly! I've been helping run the board at my church for nearly 2 decades, and I couldn't mix this so smoothly and elegantly to save my life!!!
@@violapastuszyn1349 One could almost say they did it... For Good
@@ninepoints5932 nicely done! 😀 🤣
I am so impressed with how this rendition blends their voices! How is it that the strong vocal lines that we love so much fro this song are still powerful here and yet not overpowering? Crazy, unexplainably good. Who arranged this rendition?!?!?!?!
0:02 Ben -Kohn- Cohn
Less the arranging and more the vocal directing and willingness of the singers to match tone qualities.
@@stephenbeck7222a lot of people comment who know nothing of music 😂
Amazing harmonies are my Roman Empire
Just so so incredible. 20 years has not diminished how truly moving that arrangement is.
I can't hear this song without chills or crying like a baby 😭
Me literally sobbing rn
First 'Popular' and now 'Defying Gravity'... you are spoiling us for the 20th anniversary!
Thank you for all your efforts and caring in this show it's the most swankified of them all!
Can't believe its been 20yrs as this was a defining moment for so many of us New Yorkers back in the day. What an incredible homage to all the performers who have graced us with their gifts to defy gravity.
Chills at " Together we're unlimited" ❤❤
I lived this song 100 times over and still want to defy gravity whenever i can.
And just like that, I'm 15 again watching this show, my first show ever, on Broadway in Chicago. This is what made me fall in love with musical theatre. There is nothing else in this world that makes me feel the way this does.
I saw Jackie Burns perform this live the first time I ever watched Wicked. I remember the CHILLLLSSS I got when she hit that last note and the staging, with the light on her and the elevation, just such an amazing moment in broadway.
A multiverse of Elphabas? The Wizard doesn't stand a chance!
I am a grown ass man and this brought tears to my eyes. INCREDIBLE ARRANGEMENT !!!! I never had the privilege of watching this show Live. I call "Wicked" the best musical I've never seen lol.
If I got to see this show on Broadway, or the West End, I would be defying gravity. ❤❤❤
Australian production is back if you happen to be down under this year.?
This also goes to show that your singing voice develops over time, if anything these women got better at singing this song even if their on stage performances were spectacular.
Here you have it, the Wickedest Mount Rushmore of Defying Gravity!! Gave me literal chills!! Extraordinary performance, Ladies!!!!
Pppp0pii❤klpppp. P,ji❤m
Id love a new Wicked album with Alyssa Fox as Elphaba
Until yesterday I had no idea the 20th Broadway Anniversary was coming up. But this will be a time for me to celebrate. "Defying Gravity" may be the song, out of all the songs there are, that touches me the most. Because Elphaba describes how she reaches a turning point that I am still struggling to get to. It's not that I want to turn my back on society entirely, just for the price of emotional independence, but I sure hope to become way more confident about being okay the way I am, and not valuing other people's opinon on myself so high anymore. Being afraid of losing love you have actually already lost is indeed not a nice feeling.
Thank you Mr. Schwartz for this most beautiful and meaningful song.
This song gives me chills every time, just wow.
This arrangement is absolutely beautiful!
Love all the incredible diversity of performance they give! Every single one of them is unique!
This was absolutely great! What a treat to hear these talented women sing so beautifully. I also liked the arrangement very much.
This brought tears and a big smile to my face! Always happy to see Jackie ever since seeing as Elphaba on tour .
This was incredible. Their voices in unison is so hard to accomplish- they sound like one person. Amazing!!!
Beautiful, I loved this musical and would love to see it again. I loved all the songs.
So much talent and so many years of service to this role! Thank you so much ladies. We love our Elphabas! ❤
Alyssa- I just saw you in Wicked 2 weeks ago and truly, you were beyond comprehension. Your talent took my breath away!
This was wonderful! I do wish that Idina Menzel was involved though- I had the pleasure of seeing Wicked the year she won the Tony and to me she will always be Elphaba
Her voice isn’t the same anymore! And just because she was the first doesn’t mean she’s the best 😊
Someone doesn't have to be the "best" to be your Elphie. I have seen a few.. my first was Eden Espinosa, loved her, she's MY Elphie. But I saw Fox this month and she is definitely fantastic!
@@karalynne7616 Exactly!!! My favourite was Lucie Jones in the London West end version! So good!
Her talent is still the same. Nobody can match her portrayal. Voice isn't everything.
Oh my gosh, I am crying during this! 😭😭Such a beautiful arrangement of voices. What a fantastic way to commemorate 20 years of WICKED!
It's WICKED how much I love this song! Love the harmonies in this performance - simply outstanding and truly out of this world defying gravity!!
Saw Jenny DiNoia as Elphaba on Broadway in Jan in 2021. I was so blown away by her voice! LOVED IT!!!
This gave me chills! One of my absolute favorite shows and this was a beautiful representation of the magic of it. Well done!
I get chills every time I hear this song!!!
I’m in tears! This is my favorite musical EVER!
I cried continuously seeing Wicked in Minneapolis. This song lifted my spirits and brought me through the trials of being a young adult. I cant stop the tears now, either!
I have seen Wicked only once (am from Eastern Europe) when I went to London. West End Apollo Theatre and Jenny DiNoia was Elphaba - it is still the absolute greatest theatre experience I've ever had. She is incredible.
Damn, I have goosebumps!! I almost cried that was amazing!
Absolutely loved, loved, loved this! Thank you for the wicked awesome treat!!
My all time favourite musical… have watched it 9 times when I lived in London and it’s coming to Melbourne next year… can’t wait to make it 10 times! ❤ Love this song and this is such an amazing rendition ❤
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! I didn’t think this song could ever be improved upon, but these ladies have given an epic performance that has my entire body tingling with happy goosebumps. Thank you so, so much. What a spectacular bright spot in the day. 🌞💚💚💚💚
This gave me chills. Amazing! Wicked is my fave west end show. I’ve seen it so many times. Would love to watch it on broadway someday.
What an incredible arrangement. These women are amazing!
They sing so powerful.❤
I teared up during this. This is a beautiful version of this emotional, incredible song.
Glad I am not the only one!
Happy 20th anniversary WICKED!! 💚🥳
You’ve inspired me and continue to!
I’m so proud that this show continues to inspire others to be who they are without fear!
I’ll always be on this side seeing you rising even more each day! 💚
can’t believe this was recorded just for me 💚💚💚💚

This song always gives goosebumps!
Wow this was really cool. They're all so talented and I'm glad this performance was captured to share their talent even further!
PURE MAGIC!!!!
Cold chills every time I hear this.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Jennifer and Jennifer on Broadway and I’ll never forget it. All of these Elphaba’s play it differently but so brilliantly. What a special role and what specials women they all are. They’ve changed so many people for good for sure. All the love💚
Spectacular! I could listen to this over and over again 😊
Literal Goosebumps.
These notes, the arrangement and the harmonies this is what i live for
holy cow that was amazing

These ladys did a great job, disappointed that Idina was not with them though, I was there 20 year's ago for the West End Show at the Apollo Victoria Theatre 🎉❤
I love wicked❤️
You've got me with tears in me eyes and goosebumps. What a great performance!
I saw Mandy Gonzalez, Donna Vivino, Christine Dwyer and Rachel Tucker. They were all incredible! Being so close to NYC I’ve seen more shows than I can count but Wicked was my first. Still going strong after 20 years!
Well that gave me chills
❤ perfect
Total goose bumps.Absolutley electrifying
Sent absolute chills down my spine. Amazing.

To say I had chills is a gross understatement 😍🔥🔥 These women just cured my blackened soul and reduced me to tears 😭😭
same girl 😭
Beautiful!
This gave me chills!!! So gorgeous!!
Mary Kate being in this makes me so happy ❤️🥰🥰
WOW 👀 I'm so happy to see all of you singing this song 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 CONGRATULATIONS ON 20 YEARS OF WICKED 💚
Absolutely amazing! Bravo!
Absolutely gorgeous voices from four wonderous women. Gravity is truly an anthem for all women daring to defy the odds.
As a dad of two young girls (10 and 13) who love performing, and who coincidentally finally saw this last week in Sydney on the latest Australian production, I love how they love this song and show. It’s a great girl-power anthem.
I suspect the experience will stay with your daughters for a long time, Tristan. I saw Wicked with my daughter Grace in 2012. When she recently experienced some real heartache, she began listening again, at age 27, to "Defying Gravity" to boost her spirits. @@tristantristan4733
