When he literally said in the interview that he didn't want Ariana the "popstar" to be his Glinda and yet the media is still using that to milk views. It's sad.
What a beautiful interview. Jon M. Chu has directed all of my favourite movies and I didn't even know. He's definitely my favourite director! I can't WAIT to see Wicked! It comes out the week of my birthday!
6:20 That line has traumatized so many people most especially Asians that I could understand why Constance could only power through 3 takes for the scene at max. Tears immediately went out of my eyes just watching the clip alone. Gut wrenching
That Constance could only get through a few takes of "You'll never be enough" hits so much harder knowing more about what she was going through at the time.
Honestly his films always feel so rich in color and in feeling. To quote Harry styles “it feels like a movie.” One of the few directors who makes me feel like a kid again.
Underrated moment of the video: finding out Miley’s old video of her and her crew dancing to 4 Minutes was a reply to the step up cast 😂 I used to LOVE that video as a kid!
I had no idea Jon directed every movie that really captured my undivided attention! He really captures moments so beautifully. So talented. The title needs to be updated/reworked. I guess not many people would know whom he is, unfortunately that's not what everyone thinks about, including myself. It's definitely time for the directors & behind the scene staff to get a lot more praise for their work. Everyone only recognises the actors. Not many people think about those behind the camera. Jon M. Chu - I see you bro! Ima be looking out for more of your work in the future and shall be re-watching the movies you've made that I already know and love! Keep the vision going! We need more of it in movies!
i’ve never read the Wicked book, or watched the Wizard of Oz movie, and I never seen a play of either one for that matter, but I’m so excited to see this movie that he directed!!
ok even though you don't HAVE to watch Wizard of Oz, it's better if you do (or at least become familiar with the story) so that you can understand a lot of the references. It also makes it more enjoyable to watch, seeing such a different depiction of the story. Wicked is 50 times better than Wizard of Oz btw. The story is genius. Wizard of Oz is just whimsical fun
This guy is the one that directed the "Jem and the Holograms" movie, what a flop! I can't believe they gave him one of the most important musicals in history.
He got it because he helmed Crazy Rich Asians in its extravagance is a musical without being written as a musical and was financially very successful. And the Heights which is a straight-up musical. They both made money. So will both chapters of Wicked.
Both leads miscast. They might be good singers, but they're not likable. Ariana is mean and fake, Cynthia is an egomaniac. They lack that genuine essence Idina and Kristin had...
omg yall are hopeless if you don't know what a woman with no makeup looks like. that isn't it. she's just not all baked, contoured, and wearing eye shadow, but it's clear she's got foundation, eyeliner, blush and lipstick on
he really deserves a better title for this video.
That is true, but I only clicked on it because of that title, and found the whole interview interesting and that I learned something about him ❤
he directed wicked. he deserves it.
Petition for them to change the title ✋
this title is so reductive for him
When he literally said in the interview that he didn't want Ariana the "popstar" to be his Glinda and yet the media is still using that to milk views. It's sad.
Tbf I only clicked it because of the title and stayed cause the interview was interesting. So it did its job
@@ValerieAbena Well same but I thought than Ariana’s part would be bigger but the interview was still very interesting
Yes. And. That's how they can get views on this video and why people will click and find it. AND now he gets highlighted!
It's all marketing bruh. Liek I just clicked on this video because I saw "Ariana Grande" on the title
What a beautiful interview. Jon M. Chu has directed all of my favourite movies and I didn't even know. He's definitely my favourite director! I can't WAIT to see Wicked! It comes out the week of my birthday!
Same! I'm gonna watch it as a birthday present to myself 🤩
me too!! i’m watching it three times the first week
Happy birthday in advance my loveeeeee ❤
Happy birthday for then! :D
@@YankeeDoodle_08 Happy birthday for then! :)

ooooof yup, can relate, that was the main core wound I had to heal and overcome myself. That scene hit so hard.
He did his big one with crazy rich Asians!!! I could rewatch this film over and over again. Please where is the sequel?
Sadly I think Constance Wu getting cancelled made them lose all the momentum for a sequel.
That Constance could only get through a few takes of "You'll never be enough" hits so much harder knowing more about what she was going through at the time.
STEP UP 2 WAS THE BEST IN THE FRANCHISE. I really like this guy he seems chill and humble!!!
no Wicked is !
@@MICHAEL-s9w2d no i mean in the step up franchise!
Step up was amazing
I disagree sadly. Nothing can top the original movie
He so clearly is incredibly at his job and a lovely guy to boot
The Rock telling Jon "you look like my cousin" is one of the most Polynesian things I've ever heard LOL. IYKYK.
I'm half African-American and half Hawaiian. Believe me, I know.
In The Heights is the best musical adaptation in the modern era. Wish more people would talk about it.
What a great guy... he is so authentic. No wonder he makes such great movies!
Honestly his films always feel so rich in color and in feeling. To quote Harry styles “it feels like a movie.” One of the few directors who makes me feel like a kid again.
@7:12 is giving "MOM, YOU'RE EMBARASSING ME IN FRONT OF MY FRIENDS!" I love this interview, it feels so comforting like talking to a friend.
chills when he was talking about the you will never be enough scene
Great interview! It was so good to hear his stories throughout his career thus far.
6:21 that's crazy bc when the scene replayed I instantly teared up
Great interview he was him, i couldn't stop crying. Thank you
He has a perspective seasoned by experiences. I love people who are passionate about their craft. Jon is a gem ❤🎉
Patiently awaiting the say I’m on set with John M Chu so i can tell him Step Up 2 was my favorite film growing up.
Love love I felt like tears stood in his eyes. Thanks for a beautiful truthful interview

7:32 I freaking love in the Heights. Lately my favorite movie
What an honest and sweet way to bare yourself. Great job, Mr. Chu! We'll be waiting EAGERLY for your next display of talent!
Ariana Grande is perfect to voice act thumbelina with Ben barnes as the voice of prince cornelius in a CGI animation remake ✨🧚
Great interview!
I REMEMBER WATCHING THE STEP UP 2 CAST BATTLE MILEY OMFGGGGGG
Lovely, authentic and talented human being
3:52 Asian parents will humble us sooo quickly 😂
jon chu you're amazing!!
Fantastic interview! Jon M. Chu is one of those people that deserves and SHOULD work in the industry!
Chu recently published his memoir and it was an enjoyable read!
Amazing video, he needed more than this title tho.
Saw happy I saw this! Now I have a favorite director for sure 😍
Wow! Beautiful and inspiring interview. This is the kind of videos I really enjoy!
This title is such a disservice to this brilliant man.
Amazing!
Can’t wait to see more of his work. He is here to stay!!!
This is so inspiring!
He is really inspiring ❤
The original Step Up beats the heck out of the sequels! Other than that, I felt in musical heaven when Jon was announced to direct Wicked!
I really like this guy.
This movie just "feels right."
A great insight
this is beautiful
Great interview but the title is so clickbaity lol it was like 20 seconds of the entire video
"Jon Chu, you will never be enough to have a video about you with a title that only has your name."
Hate the title, love the interview
now i want to see cynthia and ariana's audition tapes
I mean crazy rich Asians is amazing so this guy gets an A++ from me
i agree with other commenters that the title is a bit reductive HOWEVER it did make me quick on this video RIGHT AWAY so there's that 😅
Icon.
we so need crazy rich asians 2
I had no idea he did Step Uo
i'm getting goosebumps thinking of this man this man's work. i love him so much.🤍😭
Such a lame title but amazing interview!
THE TITLE ???? Seriously
0:24-0:32
What, no "Jem and the Holograms?"
Wonder if he prepared an Understudy, after the last PR stunt by Erivo
Terrible title great interview
great interview but fix the title
8:52 🥺❤🙌
The title of this video did the fit his story. Y’all need to fix this
He’s so cute
y’all should change the title…
1:29 Wow

Horrible title. He deserved better.
Casting flop with ariana…..she is so unkind the role of Glinda is not believable on her
She's literally wearing makeup in those clips......
she’s not. just eyelash extensions
I don’t think she is when she’s wearing the tank top
omg yall are hopeless if you don't know what a woman with no makeup looks like. that isn't it. she's just not all baked, contoured, and wearing eye shadow, but it's clear she's got foundation, eyeliner, blush and lipstick on
i can’t wait for the ARIANA GRANDE MOVIE starring ARIANA GRANDE, coming out this November. So glad she’s finally the star in a solo project.
well starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
Looks good… should be epic with AG👍
ArianaGATE
the title of this video is trash
very dumb title
The title of this video sucks
Great interview!
