C.J. Mancini well I mean idina did have some tuff vocal damage after performing as Elphie and there were other actresses who played elphie that didn’t suffer from vocal damage, suggesting that their practices were healthier, and “better.” Idina is an amazing actress but there were others who seemed to perform the role just as, if not even more better than idina.

NERD ALERT: throughout the show, it's been Galinda/Glinda singing the higher parts and Elphaba singing the lower harmonies and melodies. In a song where they have "changed for good" their singing parts are reversed. I always thought that was neat.

My father put me up for adoption at birth because he was very mentally ill and not financially stable. He spent a lifetime mourning the loss of his daughter (me), unable to move on but believing that he made the right choice. I met him almost two years ago, he had moved around between his siblings homes, never being able to settle anywhere or commit to anything or anyone. He drove himself mad but was undoubtedly the most incredibly selfless man I ever met. He was just suffering from so much internal conflict that he could not ever be at peace. He passed in February, and this song always makes me think of him. I miss him so much.
    Goodbye David 💕

For the record: these two do NOT hate each other! That rumor was born out of sexism and a fascination with women fighting. After all, you don't hear rumors about Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad hating each other. Or Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. Hell, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odem Jr. played two men who faced off in a DUEL, and they were both up for Best Leading Actor in a Musical this year, but you don't hear stuff like "Oh, Lin hates Leslie!" or "Leslie wishes he could actually shoot Lin!" So, why are we hearing it about Idina and Kristen? It completely misses the point of Wicked.

I’m now currently getting my degree in music performance to eventually get an education degree to teach like her. She was incredibly talented and did so much for our community and especially our music department. She also got to work with Broadway superstars. She always got lead roles in musical theater shows. She was a real life Mary Poppins. No one could’ve ever expected this would happen.

    Me: Oh cool
    Kristin: I've heard it said...
Me: *bursts into floods of tears*
I do roll my eyes at people who adamantly claim that any one acting portrayal is the "only" one like you can't enjoy all the wonderful women who have played these roles but damn do these two give me goosebumps. I feel like, and I have no insider knowledge to back this up, that they are not best friends in real life and never will be but they sincerely believe these words when they sing them to each other. It goes beyond acting and nice singing and into something else.

What I love most about them is they're both so different in characteristics AND in singing. Kristin's short and has blonde hair, Idina's taller with brown hair (thus perfect Elphie and Glinda match) and with singing voices, Kristin has the more higher, southerny tone to her voice and idina has the more alto, raspy voice to hers, yet when they put them both together...magic happens. I truly believe it was definitely God's intention to put these two fabulous women together. I'll never get tired of them, this musical or this very song in particular ❤ perfect friendship

Janice Dickson I long to have been able to witness they're potential in person. But I saw it on TH-cam. The Ally mauzey and Donna vivino version. And Ally mauzey is one of my faves because she makes the character her own and is extremely hilarious I was on the floor dying most of the time. I just love Kristin and Idina because of the movies I've seen them in as a kid and when they both started in Glee. I agree there's others who do just as exceptional. So glad you get to witness them multiple times. I bet they're as phenomenal in person as they are on the media :)

I sent this to the only best friend I ever had in my life, even though we haven't seen each other in years
I don't know if she will even watch it the whole way through, or really listen to the lyrics but I really hope she does...
I always remember when a teacher said he thought we would be friends forever because we were so inseparable. We did everything together, we even shared a diary we took turns to write down our dreams and plans and hard feelings we didn't wanna admit in person and then write each other replies and even though we were so different in so many ways it was like our souls were just the same in every single way.
We both gave so much to each other and helped each other so much through extremely difficult times and also had so many happy moments and I've never laughed more with somebody...
I know it was my fault, and your fault too, that we are not the friends we used to be.
    I love you so much
So to the only person who was ever my friend
It may be that we never meet again in this lifetime
I don't know if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you I have been changed for good. 😢❤️
I'll miss you and Us forever...

    I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
    Bringing something we must learn
    And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
    If we let them
And we help them in return
    Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
    Because I knew you...
Like a comet pulled from orbit
    As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
    Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
    But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
    It well may be
That we will never meet again
    In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
    So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
    You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
    By being my friend...
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
    In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
    But because I knew you
    Because I knew you
I have been changed for good
And just to clear the air
    I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done, you blame me for
But then, I guess we know
    There's blame to share
And none of it seems to matter anymore
Like a comet pulled from orbit
    As it passes the sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
    Halfway through the wood
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In the wood (Harmony over Glinda)
Who can say if I've been
    Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
    Changed for the better
    And because I knew you...

There aren't nearly enough songs about best friends and friendships and I truly don't understand why! Romantic love seems to inspire so much art, but friendship relationships mean so, so much - often more than romantic relationships.
This song is so very meaningful for me. My best friend and I weren't too close during school because we were in different social groups. But after school, at uni, we became the very best of friends. We did every single subject together and were together always. We moved overseas together and lived together for so many years. My depression and anxiety took hold a few years back and things between us became strained and she moved away and we don't talk anymore. We both had to take different paths. I'm changed for the better because I knew her, and I hope she feels the same, even if we parted on strained terms. I'm not sure if we will meet again in this lifetime. But she'll always have a handprint on my heart.

There are no words to describe the pain I feel from her passing and there is no amount of time to heal the wounds. Please if you are considering suicide just know that there are people who care about you. There are so so many things that happen after her death that she never got to experience or will get to experience. I miss her so so much but I'm still going to move forward with my life in memory of her.

One thing I've always loved is the resolution of their relationship in their voices. All show long Glinda was falsetto/operatic range; while Elphie was more midrange. But in this number they flip during the climax/duet; with Glinda going lower and Elphie going higher. Signifying in their voices the impact they've had on each other.

Both of their voices have aged so well. Still very much them, but their talent's grown even more and there's even more vocal control and richness in their singing, and their voices have matured.

What's interesting to me is that you can see Kristin's and Idina's interpretation of this song has evolved with time. While the power of youth has faded a bit, the emotional impact to me has really evolved and become even more complex...

That's what I love about songs like this. The emotions intensify, and sometimes change, over the years as you grow and gain more experience. Like with the OBC of Sondheim's Merrily. They were quite literally just kids when they recorded the cast album and performed on stage, but when they reunited for the concert performance all those years later, they were able to bring their lived experiences to the songs and shape them into something more personal than they had been. Or when Elaine Stritch sung "I'm Here" at Sondheim's 80th birthday concert, you could believe the words she was singing because she had lived so long. Or at the same concert, when an unfortunately, recently widowed Bernadette Peters sung "Not A Day Goes By" from that same birthday concert, and nearly broke down crying (you could even see her fighting back tears) because she was pulling from that experience.
It's always wonderful to see young people excited about musical theatre, and performing songs from their favorite musicals, but their performances will be lacking a bit (not bad, but missing something) until they've grown a bit and gained some experience from living life.

This is one of those lyrics that just blows me away with its simplicity and complexity-"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you, I've been changed for good." You gotta give Schwartz credit- he knows how to turn a phrase like nobody's business!!!

You can really see the respect and affection they have for each other during this performance, just by the way they look at each other. They had so much chemistry when they were in the show together. You can just tell how close they became working together, and how easily they sing this song together, how beautifully and easily they harmonize together. There’s just so much love there between the two of them, it’s beautiful. I mean, when they hold hands during the end of the song, and then they hug after. You can see they truly love each other.

    ELPHABA
    I'm limited:
Just look at me - I'm limited
And just look at you -
You can do all I couldn't do, Glinda
So now it's up to you
    (spoken) For both of us
(sung) Now it's up to you:
    GLINDA
    I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
    Bringing something we must learn
    And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
    If we let them
And we help them in return
    Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
    Because I knew you:
Like a comet pulled from orbit
    As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
    Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
    But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
    ELPHABA
    It well may be
That we will never meet again
    In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
    So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
    You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
    By being my friend:
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
    In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
    But because I knew you:
    GLINDA
    Because I knew you:
BOTHI have been changed for good
    ELPHABA
And just to clear the air
    I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for
    GLINDA
But then, I guess we know
    There's blame to share
    BOTH
And none of it seems to matter anymore
    GLINDA ELPHABA
Like a comet pulled Like a ship blown
From orbit as it Off it's mooring
Passes a sun, like By a wind off the
A stream that meets Sea, like a seed
    A boulder, half-way Dropped by a
Through the wood Bird in the wood
    BOTH
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better?
    GLINDA
    And because I knew you:

i love this so much because when they sing this on the original recording or in the show, their singing to each others character. now, years later, without the show, the song is just as emotional but instead of elphaba and glinda, its just Kristin and Idina and it shows how much their bond has grown over time

I really REALLY want/need the original cast broadway musical to be released in full on DVD or streaming. These two are my absolute favorites, and I need to see their version of the musical. I was sadly too young (and too broke) to see Wicked during the original run 😢
