I say this all the time. These ppl are spending tons of $$ on their appearance yet they’re trapped by filters & photoshop & post production. They cannot live w/o them. So what is actually the point? Also (& a lil off topic), I feel this is why a lot of “lookalikes” pop up. Celebs hate it but like, if ur look is easily mimicked by another plastic surgeon bc u have also had work done, u really only have urself to blame. Try mimicking my broken crooked nose! Haha much harder than say a Dr doing the same procedure as Kylie on some1 else’s face. Of course they’re going to end up looking similar! It’s all becoming so creepy frankly…

Women are under tremendous pressure to look good and have a youthful appearance. Beauty is still viewed as an important asset for a woman.
It is critical to explore the negative internal dialogue we have about our bodies. It is also important as a collective that we push against beauty standards, explore the linkage between beauty and the performance of femininity, and the linkage between capitalism and beauty and wellness. I was just talking with a young woman in college. She mentioned how expensive it is to look good (hair, eye lashes, nails, hair removal). Imagine keeping up appearances with very little money.

@@happygucci5094 ok! Idk what she means by do it yourself. That saves you money but then you spend increasing amounts of your time keeping up. At least far more than you should. For example I could install my braids myself (which will literally take all day) or pay someone to do it but it costs money. Add on makeup, skincare, supplies, waxes, outfits (both professional and personal), not to mention cosmetic procedures if you feel especially pressured. But the point is the pressures and the cost of meeting beauty standards is ever increasing and can be psychologically damaging. It seems you either pay with your time, money, mental health or otherwise MUST invest in it in some way to be seen as worthy. In my own personal life I don’t do most of that, I don’t get my nails or hair done and I thrift shop but the point about the systemic structures remain.

One the one hand, it’s his body and if it made him more confident, then more power to him. On the other hand, it’s kinda sad to see young people my age so worried about aging before they even hit their 30s and 40s.
Also, the video of the woman in South Korea being conditioned into feeling like she needed surgery really resonates. Until very recently, I swore I was hideous and needed a nose job. Yes, meeting certain beauty standard gives you social rewards but the system of social rewards only works if WE buy into these beauty standards. I don't know how it is that people can be so aware of the hidden bigotry and exploitation in everything while applying a handwavey framework of "choice" or "affirmation" to an industry that was built on erasing ethic differences and feeds of off dysmorphia. Uniqueness and rising above social pressures are admirable traits and surgeries are things to be avoided as much as possible.

What makes me really sad is when I see POC get nose jobs. So often a person's ethnicity/race is shown through their nose and when they get a nose job, which inevitably looks like a ski slope you normally only see on a white woman, I feel bad for them. It feels like a disconnection from one's ethnicity and family. I know Bella Hadid said she regretted changing her nose which she shared with her Palestinian dad. I wonder if anyone else who had work done feels the same.

    • @celestecelestial90
      @celestecelestial90 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I'm a POC and was considering getting my nose done years ago. However, I decided against it because the doctor wanted to give me an upturned nose and I felt like it would not match my other ethnic facial features. My boyfriend kind of has a nose like that, but he's half white and half Mexican so it doesn't look weird because it's natural. There are surgeons who offer natural nose jobs for "ethnic noses". If I ever get a nose job, I'm going to one who does a lot of POC noses and doesn't want to drastically change them. If I had gotten an upturned nose job, I would look fake and it would be unattractive due to me having that "plastic surgery look". I'm glad I backed out.

If anything the opposite, as some people still object to tattoos and piercings.
I very much enjoy when others will alter their appearance in self expression. Decorating their phsyical form. Like your beautiful lavender hair! I am also a big proponent of body autonomy for everyone, which gives me conflicted feelings about plastic surgery, when it seems like people are taking a risk with their life and their health because our society has very twisted and unhealthy ideals about physical appearance.

I think numerous plastic surgeons on TH-cam are also very guilty of this plastic surgery craziness and insecurities in people about their looks. I watched several plastic surgery and beauty doctors videos and they promite certain features as "beautiful" and other as "ugly" in order to promite their work. Usualky they say "this fave shape is ugly but you can fix it with" or "to look ypung your lips have to be.... and not like..." etc. This is highly offensive and they are doctors, educated people. No one ever seems to notice how negative effects those videos have. It takes time to realize how harmful all that is. Promoting beautifying procedures is fine, but don't list what makes face "ugly" or "old" because it promotes very harmful ideas to people who watch it.

It is wrong, questionable, and potentially defamatory of doctors to make assessments on people they have never done work on or can't confirm the person had work done.
But these assesment videos on celebrities continue the plastic surgery craze and have you all believing everyone is getting work when none of these doctors or any of these youtubers (including Lorry Hill) know if people had work done. It results in more business for the plastic surgery industry because they are telling people you can pretty like this too when you don't know if they did or did not have work done.
I worked in that business and most traditional celebrities (ie actors, fashion models and musicians) do NOT have cosmetic work done. This is why these assessments and speculations on people having cosmetic work done are dangerous.

My husband and I were just talking about this topic last night. I think we have swung the pendulum too far on acceptance of plastic surgery. We’re told by many that we should react to people getting work done with a “yes, queen! Do what makes you happy” response. And while I did this for a while I now feel that it’s sad that we’re basically encouraging people to fuck with their body/face through cosmetic surgery. It’s just gone way too far. “Be happy with the way you were born” should be the Motto that we all express. That’s the world I want to live in.

Growing up in Miami (& yes Latina), it wasn’t uncommon for high schoolers to get surgeries depending on the country their family was from. Most docs rec waiting for breast aug, but several girls in my class had it. They went from like an A to full B or small C, though. Nothing was “clockable.”
I had my lips done, but tbf I was a working model and it did help me get print work in cosmetics. Most of us who got lip implants back then later had them removed, except for cadaver implants of course but there’s a stigma against discussing those. Point is, nobody went around bragging about our surgeries, and we wanted it to look natural. Comparing it to todays botched aesthetic, you’d prob think we were wasting our time getting such minor work done 😂

I’m never giving Lorry Hill a view… a lot of those debunking spaces online that exist to hyper analyze women’s appearances tend to become toxic messes.

Thank you for this thread because I feel like a lot of people have been duped by Lori, Lori is actually pretty toxic and helllaaa insecure. Not because she calls people out but it's because she has been proven to make entirely baseless and false claims about several celebs. She has real deep-seated insecurities and she uses her Channel as a deflection tool. She is truly what an actual hater would be. And I'm not defending celebrities because I think the whole industry is decrepit but Lori clearly has some false shit on her channel that shes eating off of and doenst care. Like I'll never forget her video when she came for Doja cat and said Doja had a BBL and all these differnet surgeries and the ones of us who are *sane* we're in the comments like uhhhhh no Doja is of South African descent and you all are clearly are sheltered and don't know what African bodies and black bodies look like like. Her shape is so natural and so normal in the motherland yet Lori was dead-ass saying she had had all these surgeries with her whole chest just flat-out lying cuz she's most likely jealous. She came across as a full-on hater. Sad that people are rooting for her and her toxicity.

I would like to ask that you at least show proof of this. I'm all for feeling how you feel about any (and every) one, but I cannot just believe what you say because you said so.

@@CutieQ85 ✅️ exactly its so weird and gross that as a society we think its okay to hyper analyze and dissect womens bodies and their private medical history just bc they dont suit our own moral compass for how they shld look & treat their body like wtf? lol. im all for encouraging women to love their natural appearance, but you dont achieve that goal when u shame women with plastic surgery. its also incredibly weird to run a public content chanel that centers on discussing the (suspected) surgeries ppl have gotten. we need to go back to a time where ppl cld mind their buisness 😅

I feel like the uptick in the drastic plastic surgery coincided with the isolation and loneliness of the pandemic and it all just makes me sad for society

Not unless the Karsashians became famous only during the pandemic... the fascination with plastic surgery has been growing a lot due to folks like Bella Hadid and The Kardashians to say a few. The pandemic did indeed cause isolation however.

So from a different perspective, I've seen kind of where this aesthetic has gone mainstream. I used to come across it sparingly in the kink world, but it seems like it actually, like many things kink, left its subculture and entered the mainstream. It says something to the melding of fearing aging along with the establishment of strong aesthetic Trends and niches as flaunting this kind of work while taking advantage of the fact that polite Society generally won't be direct about calling it out. My phrasing on this feels clunky but I can't do any better right now.😶
