We have to stop thinking fashion and aesthetics is somehow going to save us from racism and classism. Optics only go so far. Black people especially keep being told if we just change ourselves enough we will finally be accepted by the mainstream but that never really works. We need to do and embrace what we love, instead of just trying to assimilate at the expense of our various cultures.
I appreciate your point that while the fashion is “quiet” these alleged old money or otherwise wealthy people are flaunting their wealth in so many other ways. It’s not quiet at all!

you cry of "racism" is invalid. you are just angry and insecure that old money culture comes from white culture. And your cry of "racism" is just to distract and undercut that.
racism is a product of multiracialism. you are not accepted because you are in countries that are not yours. normalize the idea that not everything is about or has to be for black people.

And this is why MINIMALISM is NOT for me! As an African, we are loud, vibrant, and eccentric in our fashion. So, when people talk about elegance being "low-key", I always roll my eyes. You hit the nail on the head. I personally don't wear logo forward pieces, because I'm nobody's billboard; but if I like a piece, i will wear it, logo, and all!
By, and large, this was a very educational video, and thanks for teaching us how and where to spend our money.

I don't think that minimalism is about the colours of your wardrobe, but more about your intentionality with what you own. I do think that bright bold and vibrant colours look amazing on dark skins and that the subdued colours tend to suit paler colour skins. So go ahead and be bright and colourful 😊.

He said he was in his house in CA. Mind you my friend grew up in Massachusetts lol. This was just an empty, very nice apt in Austin. So that's when it clicked how rich they were. Some " old" American money has been the result of hard work, imagination and innovation from poor white ( and colored) people. For example, Kraft, Wrigley, Rosenberg, Sanders, etc had nothing to do with slavery. To move forward, the argument should not be emotional but should be objective. Not a popular opinion I know!!

I love seeing a Black fashion influencer not shy away from having critical discourse around issues that impact the collective as well as those of us who love fashion. Fashion IS political and something we must begin reconciling when it comes to what we are willing to embrace as BIPOC and the harm we can actually cause in our participation of style narratives that center colonialism. Personally, my concerns are more in the role fashion plays in the climate crisis and by extension, human rights. That’s a toughie when you love to style yourself up and one I’m working through to lead me towards more sustainability. Your discussion about the Katie Holmes image (and the Olsen twins) version of “cool” - the element of disheveled and ‘sloppiness’ even, calls out to privilege. She said invest in shoes and quality fabrics and because of that, I still have some of her clothes. I watched this video 3 times because I wanted to make sure I heard exactly what was really being said. FINALLY, someone has revealed the obvious in true fashion and design. KNOW AND UNDERSTAND YOUR SUPPOSEDLY DESIGNER CLOTHING PEOPLE. I’m so happy you pointed out these fabric perpetrators passing themselves off as luxury pieces. Obviously, it’s important for us to be forever misled by surface purchases meaning on the surface it looks authentic and SOMEONE SAID IT WAS QUALITY LINEN, so let me buy it. I love the way you pointed out that you’re familiar with true luxury and we should educate ourselves on these fabrics before we even begin to shop and pay what’s being asked. Thank you for the comparisons. I’m always impress by the way you continuously inform us not to be stupid (my words) to everything that’s out there. My daughter is preparing to become an influencer and I told her to make sure we don’t fool people into buying items that they don’t need but educate them so that if they buy a Max Mara piece there must be an obvious ROI before it’s purchased. Keep educating us because there are people buying these clothes and are completely clueless. Some influencers don’t have a clue what they’re presenting and don’t even take the time to get the designers name right. Embarrassing, shameful and Fiddler (from Roots) driven. Can we please stop misleading each other for profit while it’s to the detriment of the viewers. Thank you for the enlightenment

This is why I LOVE YOU!!!! YES, EXPLAIN to everybody! Spend your money and you style the way you want, understated to the loud way. Who is anyone else to judge?? Cultures are different too, some are bold and louder while some are quiet conservative... no one has a right to say one is tacky and the other is wrong. Personal taste is no something you can talk someone else into. And to call someone's style trash is not having a discussion on an intellectual level. There are outfits I will not wear but on the flip side, I will not be made to feel ashamed of my choices. Cheers Beautiful!!!!

Omg I saw a few but by White TH-camrs and was utterly disgusted. Indeed the new term “Quiet Luxury” is the new term for what was once more common used “Old Money” The threat of wealth gaps closing and the exposure of true “classes” has somehow prompted these deplorable conversations under the guise of yet another divisive class! Thanks for addressing the issue so eloquently but matter of fact 😅 New to your channel and will be subscribing!

I’ve never been one to wear a lot of logos because I like my pieces to be interchangeable. This does not include my shoes, bags, other accessories. I could give a damn about quiet luxury. I don’t work this hard to buy nice things so I can “hide” it. So if you see a logo or two, so be it. I also want to add that when I see your outfits I think to myself “Oh I know this is expensive” 😂. Why? Because I know you love your quality fabrics. I say all this to say, you’ve taught us how to elevate our style with better quality pieces, while not spending an astronomical amount of money. Therefore, this notion of quiet luxury really seems pointless to me…especially when it’s drab and boring.

Very articulate and well presented thoughts!!! Loved this!!! And totally agree. The message behind this aesthetic is very problematic, we should all aspire to be the best we can be but not change who we are. It is just faking it all over again dressed up as ‘quiet’ rather than ‘loud’ far too much importance is put on this and we should all just dress true to ourselves and not look to trends to tell us what is best. Love you girl xxx

I don't come from money but my style has always been what the kids call "quiet luxury" and I'm upset that people associate this look to "old money." Black people have been dressing that way for decades. I get it from my momma and Aunties. (They were wearing Eileen Fisher in the 90s) If a person of color wants to wear logos, let them live and wear their logos. People all over Europe and Asia do it all the time and they are as rich as Croesus.

Thank you for the intellectual discourse on "Quiet Luxury." I couldn't stop laughing out loud. Your acerbic wit, on point!!!
The "church" , the "cool girls" , the "loafers" and others. I was hoping that you would share your thoughts on this "new" trending topic. As a former luxury retail lady in the 90's, I experienced luxury before it became "the thing" to have. Our retail education was fabrics/textiles and craftsmanship, they were the holy grail and then the cut and design. I am grateful for my studies in Fashion Design, our core studies were textile history.
Today, when I shop, I purchase vintage or pre-loved or I design it myself. The fabrics today are a sad commentary on what we believe is luxury. The exception of course are the Loro Piana's and others whose history is rooted in textiles. Thank you for the education, and the history lesson on how "Quiet Luxury" rose to the top of the most desired list. Let us remember that design is an art form. Continued success!

It depends on the motivation. Some people prefer not to be flashy with labels doesn’t mean assimilation unless the individual is taking cues from white folks on how to dress. There is also a pattern in our culture of feeling the need to show and prove to “them” we got it - hence the loud labels and drip, etc. There is nothing wrong with having real wealth and preferring to select quality clothes and/or having a preference for subtle logos. Forget the “quiet luxury” label - buy what you can afford and be you. Period. Interesting Topic ☮️

As a Native NYer this concept is GLARING in ya face. Chileeeeeee Old Money Vs New Money is a CLASS debate. IMHO I see both as offshoots of WS. Cuz TBH Even Blk ppl who are RICH ain't rich w/o someone being on the bottom. Example.... Rihanna. She's a Billionaire through CLOTHING, cheap labor and makeup, you can do the research on that. We give Riri a pass bc she's one of us. But NOBODY who is a billionaire got their money w/o using an underclass. I say this all while having Fenty products in my makeup case & Savage on my booty. I'm just not gonna mask it.
