I hate when influencers and content creators talk down to viewers - blaming their viewers for why particular videos don’t work, why they “have” to make content they don’t want to, etc.
I would like to see more videos like this. You also have my curious about the monetization of relationships. I’ve never thought of that before, but now I am seeing it everywhere.
Oof, I have so much ICK when it comes to influencers pimping out their own relationships... Whew chile, that video will be shady _even for me_ if I go through with it! 😅

I agree with this 💯! Influences, to me, are like used cars salesmen... you really need to look under that hood and do your research before spending your $$. People are lonely and think spending money of what they are selling makes them part of something. Sad, really. Thank you for your insight! ❤
It really is sad. I'm often grateful that I was already out of my teens by the time TH-cam became "a thing." Social media is warping people's sense of community and relationship in ways we've yet to see fully unfold.

I used to feel bad about myself when other ppl were able to donate or cashapp a crap ton of money to their favorite creators and influencers, ESPECIALLY during livestreams. I would feel like a fake follower/subscriber. Now, I'm 100% content with only prying my wallet open whenever *I* want to. I have nothing to prove to anyone.

I think parasociality is inherent to this medium. There are thousands of people doing the same topics and we find the ones we like, the ones we feel a connection to. We are social creatures, after all. But we do need to recognise this and not invest our identity in them.

Recently I stopped following an influencer that has begun to demand money during their lives by stopping the broadcast and putting a sign up stating the various ways you can send them money.
I find it to be ridiculous! Why would I send you more money then Disney + or Netflix etc, it makes no sense……..not for me anyway.

I was just saying this about a certain OG guru who now touts this "lavish" soft life but it's starting to become low key "look at me and be envious" behind the guise of "use me as motivation to do better", which implies her life is "better". If u look where she and others like her started out with and see their transformation, u realize the morph from honest interest to paid promotion was subtle yet profound. One recently did a perfume review (the next trendy influencer) and she spoke on these uber expensive fragrances while saying back handed insults if u couldn't afford what she mentioned. I felt it was tasteless but I knew saying anything but yesss girl would just fall in the void and her stans would irritate my teeth.....so i lived and let live. I feel this is somewhat safer space here 😅.

do you still follow this person if you feel that way about them? I personally stopped following people whose content just doesnt align wit my life/beliefs and intend to remove more before the New Year lol but I do know there are people who believe in "hate watching" and I find that so weird.
@@isobel64 This! When I no longer support someone online, I mean I no longer SUPPORT them; that means blocking them and all their content so they can never make another dime off my engagement. I'm not sure how many people realize any views are good views; the algorithm doesn't care if they're hate watching or not, a view is a view and that influencer/personality will get paid regardless.
If there's some drama going down and I decide I have the time to keep up with what's going on; I don't go to the offender's page to see what's up, I go to my favorite drama channel; that way I keep up with what's going down, but don't support the person in question.
@isobel64 that's not really the issue insofar that the content itself isn't offensive in any way. More like while it's esthetically pleasing, the energy is much different from the energy when they started and it was something I noticed more than usual in this particular format. I am happy for her success and how it continues, but that doesn't mean they can't be guilty of making tone deaf content from time to time.

The way Ive been doing clean up of my IG follow list because the way so people just about selling something and dassit, like at least be funny and has some interesting shit to go along with it. And way too many copycats. Then there was one who was just straight up rude in a DM and got the unfollowed immediately. Most one can do is just curate your feed to what you enjoy and are ok with and know that many of them need you and not the other way around. "spending beyond means to have the same look/personality" and even shit like "hate watching" aint it.
Agree with ya. I wish I could have a side-by-side of my feeds from 5 and 10 years ago vs. now, because they have changed A LOT.
Glad somebody said it, they read their comments and whatnot so they see how devout some people get but do them dirty all the same. Some people are so vulnerable, if it's not abusive I don't know what it is.
The way I see some of these inFlUenCeRs responding to people (who often aren't even being shady or rude), all while still expecting unwavering $upport from them...

Totally agree with everything you’re saying in this video.
I don’t see any influencer/stranger online as a friend. At most they are an acquaintance with whom to discuss my hobbies. I don’t have loyalty to any of them. I will unsubscribe if I lose interest or if they get shady. I don’t buy their collabs or use their codes “just to support”. I only buy of I’m interested in the product and if it makes financial sense for me to use a code (over waiting for a sale). I don’t have an emotional investment in any of them because I think it’s healthier to keep a distance so the lines don’t get blurred. They are basically online salespeople.
Hence why I never really bothered to work with influencers.
1 ROI non existent for a nano second of a post
2. Arrogance - they rather post selfies than actual paying gigs
3. Over paid when you can just easily pay a real model who will happily post and engage with the company they are working with.
4. Their followers are not following for a product drop rather than the illusion.
5. I’ll never have the guts to pay a narcissist with no nothing to offer

I can’t wait for part three. You brought up some valid points and I never thought of it in that way. It seems like now social media influencers look and act all the same. It’s no longer being yourself and creating content. It’s more of look at me, my White House, my influencer links, my doodle dog, my boyfriend…etc. The younger generation falls for it but the older generations just gives it the side eye.

🙏🏽 for this. Feels like a fire sale in the influencer media complex and unfortunately a lot of the audience are the ones to lose. From sessions to trips to merch, it feels like instead of directing our energies towards burning these systems down and rebuilding, we misdirect and keep using the rules that never applied to us. Capitalism is a loosing game. We’ve spent all the resources now where this was always inevitable. Just hope that with some union movement on the ground this past year that maybe there can be some groundswell changes next year. It’s time for the powers to be shamed into fixing things or… let me stop.

Ghosting is one thing. I understand some content creators be going thru it, just uninspired, they have their reasons. It’s the influencers disappearing for long periods and making a return when they are about to launch something, while I’d at least appreciate a shorter, unserious or minimally edited video in between more than complete absence.
Sometimes you can even tell the content was made for the sponsorship too

Yes. I’m 29 and so we were there when a lot of the popular social media influencers (like Aimee song, Camille coelho, etc), started out with Instagram first launched way back when. Something that irks me is these social media influences collaborating with revolve when the quality of their clothes is just awful. And the price is not worth it! Those two are just some of the main ones that come to mind but I know there are others out there. And then when you question the quality you get blown up for it!

I'm wondering if part of why influencers can be bitter about their followers is that they're doing things that grow audience but not liking what they do.... atlest that's what I'll blame on the fact that I've been on youtube for 3+ years and still low sub and not monetized. Still finding that balance of what I like to do with what I can do for media (and so far, I like my audience).
I feel you on that. Even when I think about what "does well" vs. what doesn't for me, it seems that the videos where I'm scalping people do the best. But, I don't want to let that lead me down a road of relying on negativity or drama to guide my content. So, I only do content that I believe in and am proud of--while still throwing in a dash or two of shade when it makes sense. 😅

I've been writing lately about how through the rubrics of political irony, there is no distinction between entertainment media and news media. Here I'm defining entertainment as the misappropriation of irony. The big one I aim to tackle in the project that I'm working on is the politics surrounding philanthropy. My project is heavily anti-philanthropy. I write a new analysis of my own while leaning into the work of strong figures like Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Mercy Oduyoye for political support to my argument. It's gonna be good.

It is no surprise to me that philanthropy-based entertainment has grown very popular on the Internet, but how often do people sit down with all the many details of why and come up with a thorough explanation with the intention to turn it into an entire counterculture movement?
