  • Apparently the Ultimate Edition is a bad remaster because it changed the script? (This did not happen).

    Dom and Marcus have known each other since they were kids. It’s in the first book. His older brother was closer to Marcus and once he passed away in the pendulum wars, Dom, and Marcus became closer over the mourning of their brother

      @@Buster-McTunderThat doesn't make them invalid. I mean, the author of the books wrote Gears 3.
      That's the equivalent of saying Ahsoka isn't cannon to star wars cause she's only been in shows (type of media the series got into post creation), not movies (original media type).
      Just cause the form of media changes, doesn't mean it isn't cannon. Hell, using the old star wars cannon tier list, games would be G cannon (top), and T cannon for the books (considering the Author also wrote a game, this is most fitting in comparison to the role Filoni has gained in star wars). Which means until the games prove otherwise, the books are cannon.

      It doesn’t, but the original point in the video is that their relationship is hardly shown in the *games* where 95% of the fanbase is paying attention.
      The point is that the games had refused to show the same level of care for characters and relationships especially in contrast to the books. Which is why in the video I said that Marcus and Dom never had a real relationship until the first half of Gears 3 (written by Karen).

    • @AnyoneCanBeNerdy
      @AnyoneCanBeNerdy หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Buster-McTunder Marcus and Dom never had a relationship till 3?
      Why would Dom break Marcus out of the Slab in gears 1 then?
      Marcus followed Dom into the labor camps, he was there for Dom, after he had to shoot Maria. Sure it wasn't full of emotional depth, but they were behind enemy lines, solo, with their civilization relying on them, as professional soldiers of over 2 decades each. They stowed it until they were safe, and by the time they were safe gears 2 was over, which is where book 2 happens to pick up.
      Could it have been done better in game? Sure. Would that have costed way more time, money, and resources to fit into an action game post climax? Yes. Keep in mind Epic had at this point, had only about 100 employees on their books when gears 1 and 2 came out. Hell Gears 2 had 15 programers, and only 45 artists. So it got left to subtext in game, and details to be hashed out in other material.

      @@AnyoneCanBeNerdy agreed. At the time, this was a really well done story and if you couldn't tell within the first 15min of the game that Marcus and Dom were close friends, you might want to get your T levels checked.

    Also I don't have a problem with how the characters look because they get to look more human and are a lot more expressive compared to the original especially the part where Marcus is dumbfounded by Cole being chase by the Brumak. Out of all of them I like that expression the most. Makes him look more human and cute. Even Anya gets to emote a lot more than in the original game so its not awkward to see her and Marcus having a moment when they notice each other.

    I absolutely and wholly disagreed with his take on UE, like it’s one of those rare remakes where they stick to the original story, upgrade EVERYTHING ten fold AND even add to the story with the whole comedy of errors section/ brumak chase. Some NOTE SOME, of his opinions I agree with on 4/5 BUT to each his own on those titles lol I’ll die on any hill for the original trilogy

    I'm just going to add more to this whole thing since I'm kinda annoyed I didn't say as much originally, so I'm going to say it here: It was not their intent to make what the first game had. What they did was trying to establish some ideas in mind and see if people liked it, which Gears 2 expanded more on it since they got alot more to do and alot more concepts and ideas in mind to work with because they didn't have the funding needed to progress it with even asking Microsoft to spend another million dollars just so the Xbox 360 could handle Gears of War to begin with but in the same vain didn't have enough time to think these ideas over or simply didn't know how to present it, so the first game was more on the side of: keep it simple, keep the story itself small, maybe have smaller character moments like Dom's wife, and keep the greater lore in the background like the Locust Queen.
    We also need to remember that even Cliff himself and the vast majority of the staff were terrified of Gears of War because they didn't know if it was going to be a success or a dung help in the making, so they went: right, here's what we need, here's how we'll get the job done, then we'll eyeball it, make sure it all works, and push it out there to see what the gaming public think of it. Come Gears of War 2 they got alot more ideas in mind this time around and a bigger budget to use to make the magic happen and create a more grander story in the making with big fat brush strokes of drama like with Maria, Tai, Ben, the giant worm, the sires, sinking of Jacinto, which worked for the time even if it wasn't as smooth despite some sections like the New Hope facility not really relevant to the plot or the greater lore since you don't learn what happens there until Gears 5, so to say this was all planned out and done purposely is like saying George Lucas knew what Star Wars would become for the next several generations in time and that the first movie was going to be a huge success despite being at a Beach with Speilberg so to not hear the outcry of hate and failure he expected it to happen.
    And like Lucas himself went back to not only make some added elements like more color palette because even back in 2006 people complained that it was too dark and about as cheery looking than an otter eating watermelon and gave the characters more facial animation so to appear more lived in both in the environment and personality wise so that it doesn't look like Marcus and the gang look constipated and that Anya looks like a lively person in a grim situation and Cole is the most gung ho, bombastic guy of the main four, so it fits his character to be more expressive than everyone else given the energy he oozes out and RAAM as mentioned already sticking out among the Locust roster but doesn't fall into the New Hope pitfall of changing or adding unnecessary things that weren't there previously.

    Really enjoyed your video and your points. One thing I’d like to mention is that UE actually runs on the 2006 source code, which is why a lot of things are 1:1 with the original game.
    It’s why The Coalition was able to develop GOW4 and UE at the same time. It also explains why GOW4 runs significantly better on PC than UE, because it runs on Unreal Engine 4.

    I augur that scorge showed up more than 2 times in gears of war 2 like the first was cutting the centaur and assault derricks, the second being on the hydra, the third being in the thrown room, and the forth being his second half of his boss fight and death.

  • @mvanvoor

    Omaha seems to be trying to be contrarian. UE was bad - general GOW fan consensus was it delivered and was great. Judgement was great - general consensus was it really wasn't. I am a bit disappointed if that's "the worst GOW take".
    I was terrified of the berserker when I first played the original and I was over 30y old. Terrifying because you're moving around trying to dodge a creature that can 1-hit you in a tight space with a clunky movement mechanic with a timer, and frustrating because of how often the AI Dom would get downed or killed.
    GOW is not a horror game, it's a 3rd person cover based shooter with horror elements. I think in hindsight, after playing 6 major titles and being familiar with the mechanics, it's easy to forget how really well done the horror element part was back in the day. It's not just the dark lighting, or the buckets of blood. The sound was really well done, as was the timing of jump scares, environmental movement, etc. And the fact you're fighting "inhuman genocidal monsters".

      That’s my main disconnect, because I played G2 first when I was like 9 and didn’t get to the first game until after 3 in 2011/12 ish. So the horror of the day never clicked for me.

      Man this is giving me memories of when I didn't beat gears of war one purely because of the berserker in the greenhouse I think? Because me and my brother thought there was two of them and were so shell shocked that we legit just stopped after that because of how much we were scared by the first berserker encounter.

    They just took the same framework of Gears 1 and overlaid updated assets, and a few new bits and bobs. Functionally, the game is identical to its original. Actually, functionally identical to the PC version, I should say (probably). I don't know anything about the development of the game, but if it's anything like Halo CE and Halo 2 anni, it is functionally the same game, built on the bones of the PC ports. Even if it wasn't, a remaster is just a visual/audio overhaul. A remake is the game built from the ground up, like the Dead Space Remake.

    • @mvanvoor
      @mvanvoor หลายเดือนก่อน

      Buster's commentary on UE3.5 being incompatible with UE4 is correct. It was not the same exact framework, a huge amount of game mechanic code would have had to be ported from Unrealscript in 3 to C++ in UE4.
      This sort of non-trivial level of effort to port from UE3 to UE4 is not necessarily "the norm" and other engines like the one used in Halo might not have changed so fundamentally version to version as Unreal did, but it definitely did change and that would have made it a fair bit harder to do a remaster. This may also be exactly why we HAVEN'T seen a G2 and G3 remaster.

    Just started watching this, but I don't know man - at [9:34] the host has gone on for what feels like minutes saying the original content was wrong for saying something like UE was built with the same engine but newer... and is off on a tangent about Bethesda. The original content statement is correct though - UE and the original both use "Unreal engine" with the contemporary "latest" version. I'm pretty sure the original content's point was both are "Unreal" as opposed to one using "Unreal" and the other using "Unity".

    • @Buster-McTunder
      @Buster-McTunder  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes but it was portrayed as if UE 3.5 and UE 4 are interchangeable or compatible, which they are not. The Bethesda tangent is dogging on Creation Engine which more or less is much more compatible in its variations where Unreal is notx
