  • Another blue synth on the channel! Lets take a look and listen at the Roland JP-8080 and create a classic late 90s trance track.
The JP-8080 is the rack version of the JP-8000, Roland's first venture into virtual analog. Its a pretty great synth overall but it got its place in dance music history thanks to the 'super saw' oscillator.
100s of trance classics were made using this synth, does it still have the same magic 25 years later?
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:59 A bit of history
1:59 Sound demos, presets and newly created patches
    9:21 JP-8080 features
11:52 Creating trance like we're back in 1999
12:03 Bass base and timely bass
    12:52 Out of the blue
    13:32 Trancy pads
15:04 Massive super saw trance lead
    16:16 Make some noise
    16:45 The finished track

It's sad that so much trance music has become so cheap now. This type of sound was how I was introduced to trance as a kid and loved it. I could rock out to it or even fall asleep to it. Didn't matter, I just couldn't get enough! Then it seems like around 2010 almost everyone started composing this new crap. Even artists from before then went and changed their style. Thank you for this! It brings back so many pleasant memories!

I remember going into the music store all of the time just to play with the JP-8000. I wanted one SO badly when they came out, but couldn't afford one. Around 2002 or so a friend of mine had one and wanted to trade it. He wanted the MC909 Groovebox. I said done and bought one off of ebay and traded him for his JP-8000. I still have it. Don't think I will ever get rid of it. I certainly never used it for trance despite also writing electronic music. The JP-8000 also had the ability to create really dark and interesting sounds and that's why I wanted it.

    • @vapemcvaperson
      @vapemcvaperson ปีที่แล้ว +1

You hit the nail on the head. Same for me (I've owned 2 now) I never used it for happy ethereal string pads trance but I used it for amazing dark bass lines that morphed and thick leads and pads and many evil risers, drops and sound design in general plus that feedback knob on a midi synced clock in the delay fx section is awesome!

So many legendary tracks were released during that period: 1998, LED There Be Light, Carte Blanche, Madagascar, Greece 2000, For An Angel, Halcyon, Gouryella, Flaming June, Seven Cities, Open Our Eyes, Out of the Blue, Superstring....... Iconic synth. Like it or not Roland really helped define the genre with the 8000. The rack model looks a bit sturdier than my keyboard, with its plasticky case and wobbly knobs, but both of them share that lovely blue/black/orange panel.

I could not agree more. Being able to make ‘just 4 to the floor’ music that is even interesting to people who do not dance (like me) is a real gift. It is all about using the layers of sound to tell a story. Not only going for the ‘climax to drum roll to kick+bass’ trick…

The JP80X0 is probably the best hands on synth ever, especially for Trance guys.
The Yamaha AN1X for sound is better than the JP, it's just a shame they didn't incorporate a more hands on approach like the JP did.

I picked one of these up a few months ago and it was like owning an artifact of my childhood, heaven in a blue box. The JP-8000/8080 always had this ethereal, otherworldly, almost emotional sound to it heard in tracks from 4 Strings, Faithless, Darude, Armin Van Buuren, etc. And while it is the "de facto" trance synth it makes a good supplement for other genres too (as you demonstrated with that epic Alpha Juno hoover recreation at 7:40). The JP is absolutely timeless

Mr Jonas doing a JP 8080 tour is like a dream! How about some breakdown of some of your classics some day?

Awesome video! Just had a listen through Out of the blue (the whole album) by System F the other day, and it takes me right back.

My most favorite supersaws of the era were certainly the ones by Push and I appreciate the reference among patch demos ;)

Fantastic work, fantastic synthesizer. It makes me wish for a 90s revival moment just like with the 80s and Synthwave/Retrowave.
BTW, Fall To Pieces is AMAZING, you made it sound so unique ;D.

The gated pads sound perfect, as well as the main lead. Thank You for this presentation - yes, JP-8080 is definietly powerful synth. Great final track too!

Finally you’re back 🤩🤩 Using the Jp-8000 in thevstudio back in 2001-2004 I feel the essence is bigger soundscapes and longer/bigger reverbs and of course supersaw/unison on everything 😂 Keep sharing, J 🤩

Finally doing a synth i own, my one has a slightly dodgy volume control but pretty fun to play with. Got the memory card a couple years back and have put on so many preset banks i found online. Price has almost doubled since i got it in 2009 or something. This is great, I'll probably copy some of your track structure break-buildup ideas when i start going over my stuff with hardware. Also good to see you on youtube again
