This is literally my favourite TH-cam channel. No one else is revisiting the colourful history of dance music and I really feel that this is so important. I love your tutorials on creating these historic genres. Please keep going!!
Hear hear. I always look forward to Jonas's videos. They're always super informative and he's got such a relaxed and chilled presenting style. The end result of each video is a banger every single time.
Well done, this track could be played in the clubs today, if I knew of s club playing this, I would go there, although, the door staff may not let me in as I'm almost 65 !!! 😁
I was 18 in 88, in the UK and remember this very well! Still have all the new beat vinyl that I purchased all those years ago! Happy memories. Just discovered your channel. Good work man - hugs from the UK!
Welcome to the 4's. It ain't so bad. Nice video. New Beat kind of predates me as well. I remember the sound but I was too young to really get into it. Fun watching you dissect and reconstruct it.
I had no idea this genre existed, but I'm digging it. Reminds me of the dance floor industrial of early Front Line Assembly etc. The history section in these videos is really cool too. I'm just getting into electronic music so it's fascinating to hear the background. I've just moved to Belgium too, and I had no idea it was such a hub for electronic music.
As a 41 year old flemmish belgian myself, I had a very similar experience when it comes to newbeat. Though in '95 I heard jeff mills live in tokyo, and I was completely sold to that kind of techno for the years after. Fun watch, and your track sounds really nice and I love the composition!
Awesome, once again. Learned something new. In the very early 90s, in the midwest US, I classified this style under industrial/techno/ebm. Didn't know it was called New Beat. The first vinyl I purchased was Nitzer Ebb - Getting Closer - Mixes 1990. Started Djing with all the industrial tracks. Makes sense industrial/ebm evolved from earlier 80s genre song elements. So many elements overlap. Keep them coming, Thanks!
Happy birthday then. You don't look that old. Your mindset, the fact you like what you do and you are sharing information keeps you strong and vibrant. Keep on going. This channel is an inspiration!
Thanks ! I'm moving again like i was 18'y old on the Boccacio club ! haha ! ;o)))))))))))))))) . Hugs from a old belgium guy who still produce some EDM tracks for fun ^^
I've also noticed many NB tracks had heavy usage of stock sounds of samplers and sample based synths of the era, predominately Emu Emulator II or Roland D50. This is why it sounds so grounded in 80s, and it was probably the main reason it well out of favor so quickly (oppositely to freshly arrived House and Techno from States).
I was an 18 year old dj in England in 88/89 myself and my friends loved new beat and hard beat... mixed well with British, American and Dutch acid house and techno at raves 😍 Thanks for making this you nailed it
Huh. Could you give insight how would you mix 100 bpm with 140? To me it’s the most striking difference between ‘continental’ and uk sound. That and breakbeats (sped up). Also if you can point out some old school playlists from the era would be cool. Would like to deepen my knowledge of the scene from the source
No one was making 140bpm tracks in 1989. Almost all house music back then was in the lower end of 118-130bpm, so you could have sets that began with 110bpm stuff like The Maxx's "Cocaine", then worked through Mr Fingers (around 115bpm), and Marshall Jefferson, Todd Terry (123bpm) and Technotronic (125?). Things like Tyree's "Turn Up the Bass", which was a peak-time floorfiller, was considered "a bit fast" at around 126bpm. The faster stuff didn't arrive until bad drugs hit the scene in the '90s.
Teacher, you are a true master. I had no idea about new beats. I was influenced by the 80's and when I listened to Technotronics and Robert Miles - Children, and I was hooked myself. I love that you connected the dots. No worries about turning 40. I'm 2 years older than you. Wisdom gets better as you age. Keep up the great work.
I still remember when I first heard The Sound Of C, I was about 9 years old and I was so intrigued by it. This probably started my love for electronic dance music. Alongside The KLF 😊
Fully unaware of this sub-genre of the 80s! It does seem fitting for Belgium in a way. I love the dark texture it has and as far as I can tell your track sounds really good! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this video! I'm from Lille (France) and was a Confetti's fan back in the days (I even danced at "family parties" dressed like them 😀), which soon got me into techno and then EBM/industrial (I became a huge Front 242-fan). I still make the new beat-moves when I dance... in my house basement! It's part of my everyday exercising, haha!
I think this is your best track yet! (At least, in terms of these videos where you create tracks in specific styles) I love these videos, keep them up please!
Great work! We had 2 of our songs released in Belgium in 1989 (originally released in 1984 on Parlophone/EMI) on Play it again Sam/LD Records. The 12" single was a double A side, A 8:15 To Nowhere and AA The Spaceship Is Over There, they were classed as New Beat. The single achieved chart success as high as number 2 in parts of Europe. The songs are on our TH-cam Channel, come visit!
Fantastic work! I live near Houston where the biggest clubs in the states were playing this type of music. I was too young for clubbing then but I loved hearing the live mixes on the radio and recording them. Definitely still my favorite music.
I woulda danced to this! Was just getting out of college in the New Beat and Hard Beat era in the US, and I loved it. Belgium had some great stuff back then, including Front 242 creating Electronic Body Music.
You definitely captured the sound of New Beat with your amazing track. I’ve been a huge fan of New Beat since my first introduction here in the U.S. back in the early 90’s after picking up the “This Is The New Beat” compilation CD from 1989 that re-introduced New Beat to the U.S. market. I published a video to my channel a couple of months ago showcasing my New Beat record/CD/cassette collection. I’ve added 6 more Mint condition New Beat 12” records since then that I bought directly from Praga Khan (aka Maurice Engelen) himself. Great video! Cheers!
Its very nice that you show how you made this music, I like these kind of music very much. While watching your video ideas and melodies came up in my mind. I think im going to try to make something like this, this is very cool!
This really takes me back and loved the new beat genre .... and still do. To watch this track evolve was amazing. Your a true pro! I am now a subscriber.
Great timing! I've been really into New Beat for a couple of weeks since I've always been a massive Electro-Industrial/EBM fan. Seeing the creative process behind it is pretty cool!
arguably the best new artist youtuber..something about his style and delivery in videos that makes it so watchable. i feel like it’s far less sterile and formulaic and far more interesting and unique compared to many other youtubers out there making music producer content.
Dude I love it, I also only catched the tail of the New Beat hype but I love it (I love so many music from Belgium anyway). I think you did a great job!
So TH-cam suggested one of your videos the other day and I ended up watching everything you ever posted on here! Such a wholesome show, can't wait for more, hope all is well!
this is sick man! i just bought an alesis sr16 drum machine and its great for those 80s drum patterns! cant believe alesis still manufacture those drum machines! awesome track you created there!
The New Beat compilations on Subway were great and quite popular in the UK. I remember picking up New Beat Take 5 in order to get 'Pump Up the Jam' on vinyl.
Always look forward to these videos, I've had nothing to do with electronic music production before, only bands and live sound but your videos always make me inspired to try it. Thanks for the great content and I love your studio!
CONFETTIIIIIISSSSSS 🤣 Good, so I killed the New Beat scene.. Just kidding.. the 'turn up the bass' casettes sold massively and the first 2 or 3 contained many new beat classics and got me hooked.. Humanoid, Taste of Sugar, Voices..
Awesome! Finally get to know what New Beat is! Story time - in the very early 90s I was in a music shop with some mates and a few of us were asking if they had any hardcore dance stuff and another mate was asking for New Beat. Can't remember what we bought but I never did hear what the hell New Beat was. Wasn't a massive problem to not know but now and then I wondered about it and it wasn't a genre many people ever mentioned. But now after this video I finally know! And it turns out I'd heard a fair bit of it and quite liked it back then.
fits well as a newbeat! Not overproduced, and well creative with adequate song structure. Reminded me of a mix of a few classic tracks. You goodz dude :)
So good! :D I love late 80s/early 90s house, techno, etc. If you have the time I'd be interested in a video on arrangement, transitions, etc. I've been binge watching your videos and I don't think you've done one of those, but I haven't gotten to all of them, yet. Thanks for your videos.
That track you made is awesome mate. Coupled with the video. That should be released and out there. I enjoyed watching the video very much. Nice work, keep it up dude, I've subscribed
I just know that every time I see a YT notification from your channel, I'm about to see a masterclass in every subgenre of electronic music you cover in your videos. Great job. 👍
Very cool. As an American I never heard of New Beat before, but I'm a huge Front 242 fan and I can definitely see where their work influenced this genre.
This sounds great ! Id love to see a video where you do some experimental IDM like The Future Sound Of London and their album Lifeform, or, agressive gabber like KnightVision or Nasenbluten !..
Been waiting for the New Beat video for a long while and you did not disappoint Jonas!! Many thanks, and great track. I like how you layered the bass patch on the TX and the sound of the MS-20 is amazing. It really captures the genre well! Some elements remind me of Fatal Attraction - Music To Be Murdered By, one of my favorite New Beat tracks
This is literally my favourite TH-cam channel. No one else is revisiting the colourful history of dance music and I really feel that this is so important. I love your tutorials on creating these historic genres. Please keep going!!
Thanks a lot :)

The Gabber and happy hardcore ones are my favs
A request: MORE EBM! Love the historical context of your videos.
Fantastic track by the way!
Thank you for using the influence of your channel to promote New Beat.
Hartelijk bedankt, merci 😉
One of my fave genre ,,!!
Thank you jonas
This reminds me of all the Technodrome International tracks I used to play.
New Zone and Zoth Omnog
That final track is awesome ! Great job and happy birthday Jonas
Thanks!
Thanks so much for mentioning our service 💛 much appreciated!
Well done, this track could be played in the clubs today, if I knew of s club playing this, I would go there, although, the door staff may not let me in as I'm almost 65 !!!
😁
Happy belated birthday! Here's to many more genre deconstructions!
I was 18 in 88, in the UK and remember this very well! Still have all the new beat vinyl that I purchased all those years ago! Happy memories. Just discovered your channel. Good work man - hugs from the UK!
18 in 88. The timing doesn't get more perfect that 😎
Oh vous êtes belge ! I can understand why your channel was all I needed, as belgian my self!
New beat never went away. You can hear it in the Goth clubs.
It also globally gained niche following after 2010 thanks to Radio Soulwax, especially their "This Is Belgium" video set.
This explains so many Amiga demoscene music tracks.😊
Yes to playing back in the day very cool thank you
Oh shit! That was awesome man well done! 🧄🥩
Welcome to the 4's. It ain't so bad.
Nice video. New Beat kind of predates me as well. I remember the sound but I was too young to really get into it. Fun watching you dissect and reconstruct it.

Omg I think I know for sure what I want to do with my life it’s Music!
I don't care really for the lore of the sound, but you simply NAIL IT in all musical genres. I feel so inspired by your channel.
Nice history lesson Janos, had no idea this was a genre.
Thanks ! I'm moving again like i was 18'y old on the Boccacio club ! haha ! ;o)))))))))))))))) . Hugs from a old belgium guy who still produce some EDM tracks for fun ^^
"new beat" was a wonderful time ... thank you for bring it back.. that and italo my 2 favs
Great track, love that driving bassline. It makes me think of Front 242’s classic track Headhunter.
That baseline was killer. In fact everything was just amazing.
Fantastic work! New Beat is one of those long forgotten genres of music that played a piviotal role in what was to come.
The first Eurodance tracks were basically up beat new beat tracks with a rap lyric on top.
@@ApunkDaydreamLamunanOi Bizz Nizz "Don't miss the party line" is a good example. Borrowing heavily from DAF
I've also noticed many NB tracks had heavy usage of stock sounds of samplers and sample based synths of the era, predominately Emu Emulator II or Roland D50. Interestingly, Technotronic were Belgian too... one couldn't escape from Belgian music in late 80s - early 90s 🤪
I still remember when I first heard The Sound Of C, I was about 9 years old and I was so intrigued by it. This probably started my love for electronic dance music. Alongside The KLF 😊

80s from a different dimension
absolute killer new beat track!!

Your editing deserves more credit. The visuals/music videos you create for each of your tracks are amazing!
I think this is your best track yet! (At least, in terms of these videos where you create tracks in specific styles) I love these videos, keep them up please!

Damn, you nailed it again.
Did you know that, like wine, music genres get better with age?
Anyways... welcome to the 40+ club ;)

I've been listening to newbeat for as long as it's been around. I still do that today. Your song turned out really well
I enjoy a lot watching you creating music!
Jonas, Dude... You look 10 years younger! If it wasnt vor the small grey hairs... We would never notice. Great Video as alwways!

Wow… top shelf New Beat track. Takes me back to the Barocci and Boccaccio clubs.
I Love the Kraftwerk style MS20 melody. Thanks so much! 💜
My pleasure. It was big time to dedicate a video to Belgium's very own dance music genre.
@@Estuera 👍🏻 Side note: The expression “big time” fits the era nicely! 🤓

You are spot on my friend
Great time in music

Thanks for all you've shown us
"Rock to the Beat", I still have that record. Your music, I would dance to it.
Great track
It's a cover of Reese & Santonio btw. I prefer the original though
@@FluxTrax I never hear of Reese & Santonio, that song sound pretty much the same. Thanks

This is a really good track. Your “banjo” addition is sublime.
The groove sounds so sick 6:34. An extended mix of the track would be great!
