I'm from India, but I wasn't aware of the fact that Mr. Singh was almost the pioneer of acid house which is my favourite genre and he gave a little bit of Indian taste to the actual acid house sound but I would say that it was quite minimal and very amazing album, very proud of him.
Yep, it's a classic album that I'm glad is being given its due in more recent years. I'd also say that - while not as influential in a global sense - Bappi-da's work with the 303 in 80s Bollywood is still remarkably diverse and definitely worth checking out. And if you wanna go beyond acid, read up on the NID's electronic music lab in late 60s/early 70s too.
I bought my first TB-303 thirty years ago when I was a teenager, and I still love it! On the train ride home, after buying it from an infamous, run down Glasgow pawn shop, I remember being so excited that I was literally shaking and nearly puked, lol.
Commercial failure, discontinued, available for cheap on the second hand market, insanely popular a decade later, featured on Bad Gear. The natural life cycle of all Roland products indeed.
@@Sandelec-gm2cl The faulty envelope charging and discharging, the completely unrealistic filter wow attack sounding nothing like a bass guitar. Its insane.
I was never a friend of heavily distorted 303. Sounds too harsh and aggressive. But I’m deeply in love with the wobbly, groovy sounds of early 80th Acid House (Charles B., Phortune etc) and the weirdly ones from the early Ruhrpott-Techno like Recall IV - Aesthetic, Technoline, 3rd Electric etc
Yes, I got my 303 in the mid-80s. And you're wrong about it being unauthentic. I like the synthetic sounds a lot more, but when I first got it I painfully put in the examples that came in the manual for when the saints go marching in and got a very authentic stand-up acoustic bass sound. I think it had some examples of a Fender precision type sound in the manual as well. But deliberately doing random program was the way myself and other people mostly use them. Got some great sounds
Somewhere around the 10 minute mark I found myself thinking “hang on this is the sword and shield gym leader synth”. Never expected it to actually show up in the video
Emotinium is the track I always turn to when someone asks "What's Acid House?" It's the perfect example. "You hear that baseline that plays throughout the entire track? That's Acid. Add a 4x4 inspired drum machine pattern, that's Acid House."
Is still my ringtone ... when I am in public and my phone goes off I always look around and there are always people that have the "Ahhh, Blade" look on their face. If you know, you know.
Oh boy, I think I've found my most perfect TH-cam video. We can always rely on Captain Pikant to put out suberbly (re)produced and researched episodes but this one, and I suspect this is the case with a lot of viewers, holds a place dear to our hearts. How you managed to replicate Phuture's Acid Tracks so perfectly, despite all those analogue dials, is a thing of marvel. Another excellent video, thank you.
*My first synthesizer. Bought it at age 14 and that was also my only synth for about half a year, because I waited for the release of the MPC 2000 which served as my drum machine since then. That being said, the TB-303 is still with me, going strong without flaws or problems.*
I like the bit in UR's "The Final Frontier" where it goes from the short pattern to the 16 step pattern. Donato Dozzy''s "Filo Loves the Acid" is one of my favourite modern-ish acid EPs.
As someone who, in the year 1995, was 19 years old, and promptly, completely, lost my mind in a filthy, condemned warehouse in Baltimore when a DJ there spun "Higher State" for the 1st time... there really is no other sound like a 303...
Man, I went and listened to the actual "Confusion", because the version in this video sounds off to me, but it made me realize that there's a sort of audio illusion in original recording. The notes on steps 8 and 13 can be heard as higher notes, like they are here in the Pikant video, but if I choose to, I can also hear them as lower octave notes instead. I can switch back and forth pretty easily. Very trippy.
As usual a top quality production !! 🎵🎵🎶🎶👌🏻👌🏻 The DinSync RE-303 is recognized by many professionals as being "the closest". Personally I love the BassBot TT-303, but V1, not V2. If I had the money a few years back I would however have bought an Avalon Bassline which is on he same level as the RE-303, but has so much more features and looks more "professional" and not so "plasticky" like most 303 clones ... and it has a much higher price tag. These days I have an Aira TB-3 (that I don't use), two Roland TB-03 (that I don't use), a Cyclone TT-303 and a Behringer TD-3 MO that I both use ... and if I want a less acid and more dirty bassline i use the Erica Synth DB-1 Bassline. Edit: Plus the RAT Distortion panel. In the end the machine itself is only as good and "original" as the person who uses it, so it actually doesn't matter that much which one people own. The truth is that once the beat kick in and the acid wobbles, more than an estimated 95% of people listening and dancing couldn't hear the difference and don't care the slightest bit. The beat just goes straight on and on ... um-tss um-tss um-tss um-tss
When I was new to this sound, it may have been around 1994 when I was in school in NY. I remember buying CDs, gambling on what I hoped I'd like to listen to. I first came across Plastikman Sheet One (from a classmate) that offered a non-dosed blotter "sheet" in the packaging... of course I thought this marketing very cool. 😊 From there a girlfriend's brother showed me Keoki and then Big Beat that was newer.... 🤷🏻♂ Girlfriend's brother's final best offering was to show me Sasha and Digweed Northern Exposure and from then I was hooked.... I'm 54 now I digress but I wish to say that the 303 and the Acid baseline was never a sound that grabbed me though I do appreciate it very much today. Today in subtlety, 303 Acid can fit beautifully... Your videos Captain Pikant, are the best that I subscribe to. There are countless I subscribe but somehow you're able to be one of very few that I look forward to. Best to you and thank you
I've been wanting to do some acid house inspired music myself after diving into video game music from the 90s! This was such a good video for giving me a starting point of what to try out! Superb as always!
My interest in this video is a testament to how well produced and arranged it is. I'm not really a huge electronic music fan, but I will happily sit and watch this for 30 minutes 👌🎶
One notable but unknown example is "Körperwärme" by the german band "1. Futurologischer Congress" as it uses a little bit "dirtier" slides just like acid house.
Somehow I never noticed that Rip It Up was a 303 and we listen to that track quite a lot in our household. But listening again it sure is apparent! Maybe that's what the designer of the 303 was banking on!
Omg I'm such a 90's kid it never occured to me that the acid screech is annoying to some people. Loved this video, Hallucinogen's Twisted is my favorite 303 heavy album! And that blood sprinklers joke caught me totally off guard and caused me to bite my tongue while eating. Worth it.
..the fun fact is - Posford didn’t use any 303’s on his Hallucinogen ‘s albums (there’s some info on his studio setup at the time), nevertheless- they are great albums!👍
I knew about the late Charni ji (Charanjit Singh) , as he was a great all-rounder. He played electric bass, synths and keyboards on many bollywood soundtrack recordings throughout the late 60s and well into.the 70s. He also sang and played live with other touring musicians, too. What really surprised me was that 'rip it up'used a 303. That was an eye (ear)-opener
It's perfect timing that I'm dusting off my friends 03 and ready to plug it in with the donner, 3 monologs, a minilogue, digitakt, a rhythm wolf, a virus snow, a korg r3, boss rc 505,Roland vt-3, akai force, a few distortion petals and the Alesis airfx. Phew I need a nap after listing all that 😅
Great vid again guys. Some lesser known, or perhaps lesser sited 303 uses, not 'actually' Acid... (but most tweak just fine at 120.6)? Can't forget Mantronix - Bassline (Pretty sure it's not a 202), Ice-T - Squeeze The Trigger, Jam On It - Newcleus starts @1:18 not the bassline and my fav Reckless - Chris The Glove Taylor, David E Storrs and Ice-T. I'm calling this is proto Electro-Acid. Given the tempo, the sneaky slide (or two?) and even with no accent, cutoff or reso/decay action it still 'feels' so close to Acid. 😉
I thought I was pretty aware of the 303's history, but this contextualized the device's limitations and their relation to the music that was produced during its emergence. I suppose I hadn't given thought to how the esoteric and unintuitive sequencer shaped the cadence, melodic content, and note order of music that has become so central to electronic music genre motifs. Exceptional work captain!
I have ABL 3, Acid V, Phoscyon2 and a few other 303-type VSTs.... for anyone looking for a versatile and accurate 303 VST, I highly recommend D16 Phoscyon2. It's so much fun!
Lovely! My absolute favourite synthesizer, despite my constant cursing at the sequencer in the damned thing. Give me a 303 of some kind, a good distortion pedal, and a drum machine and I can amuse myself for hours. Keep on bopping, Beat Bunnies!
At 15 in 2005 my father's friend lent me acid flash vol. 2 and 3. It was unbearable but I just kept going back, ha, now I look at them as masterpieces of authenticity and a musical moral compass.
Also something I find really interesting about the 303 is how much DNA the sequencer shares with the Roland MC-8 sequencing “music computer”, especially how they both separate out note value and note length
another amazing video! Thank you! Just one thing, I think you could have also added Heaven 17 - "Let me go" to the list. The first commercial chart hit featuring a 303 :) Kudos to Martyn Ware
Dude!!! what an amazing video 😃 I always love these type of History of a beautiful instrument. You do so much work and love in these videos, explaining and providing fantastic examples! I appreciate your work ❤ Thank you!
Pokémon Sword & Shield's Gym Leader theme goes way beyond this amazing Acid bassline - it has a brilliant detuned SuperSaw 5ths lead synth sound, and a non-fixed system of bars that are sequenced together according to how the player is doing throughout the game. It really is a masterpiece.
I purchased my 303 & 606 in 1985 as a "Reduced" set for $850 AUD. They were $500 each at the time & were being run out. Still own them, my second purchase of hardware. My first purchase was SH-101, RS-09 & DR-55, still own those too. Third purchase was Vocoder Plus & 808. Memories.
On of the best 303 videos to date but wish u showed pursuit from gesafilastein and the db01 on of most epic 303 basslines with one of most modern machines
😍😍😍
I have a lot of respect for you staying true to the 303 for so many years.

The TB-303 is probably one of if not the most revolutionary synthesizers of all time. It literally invented a whole new genre of music.

Thank you! Many screen shots were taken. Chorus pedal was checked (one day maybe) - Blade needs it (and blood sprinklers). Lovely episode
15:21 I'm so happy you've given us Emotinium by Roy of the Ravers, I've been struggling to figure that one out. Thank you!
We're glad you like it, this one took us some time to transcribe :) :)
luke vibert - i love acid of course comes to mind!
Great episode! British synth trio Heaven 17 featured the 303 on their 1982 track Let Me Go!
are those the lads who made "temptation"?
Also My Mine "Electric Tango", Alexander Robotnick "Problèmes d'Amour"
Confusion is always been my fav 303 track

There’s no way I could leave Richie Hawtin off my list of faves. An under-the-radar favorite is Essit Muzique - Essit Muzique.
Let’s go! Always hype when you drop a new vid!
Heaven 17 - Let me go and Section 25 - Looking from a hilltop other pre acid uses of the TB303. Nice video thank you :)

The BEST and ultimate 303 to me is the Abstrakt Avalon, which I demo a few ways on my dumb channel. Built like a tank and worth every penny.
One 303 piece that always sticks in my mind is Ege Bam Yasi/Mr Egg "Superclouds". Deceptively simple and makes great use of accents.
Eggselent.

Nice that you have proper credit to Charanjit Singh! Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat is one of the most authentic (and best) albums I've ever heard!
My fav acid tune: Little Little - Tickle Me [1989], though the producers likely used layered SH-101 right there.
Great to see you back dude

I don't know why, but the 303's sound is an eargasm for me.
so happy to have a new video! always so much fun to watch
Always good thanks.
Absolute legend tracks here and a nice walkthrough of my younger days!
I'd be tempted to add Reckless by Ice T, The Glove and Dave Storrs from 1984 to the timeline as an example of the 303 used in the 80's electro genre.
Mantronix Bassline was '85 I think too.
Then you have Newcleus (Dream 2 Science) and "Jam on it"
another amazing video! Thank you! Just one thing, I think you could have also added Heaven 17 - "Let me go" to the list. The first commercial chart hit featuring a 303 :) Kudos to Martyn Ware
Was going to mention that track too. Apparently they got the first 303 to arrive in the UK according to them in an interview.
@@bernardryan475 oh wow! I'll do some research .. that would be interesting to know

Great video as usual. But this one is beyond special. Thank you! 🫡
Alexander Robotnick's "Problems D'Amour" was probably a really early 303 on a record too.
That's one of our favourites as well, we once played it as an end jam :)
I might have to dig my Donner 303 clone out and see if I can make some of these sounds. Great video and thank you as always!!!!
I love TB 303 as an Original! I’m glad I owned my TD-03 from Behringer myself.
Can’t have enough 303 videos! Way to showcase the Bassline3!!!!!

very entertaining. as usual. thanks!
Another early appearance of the 303 was on Niagara Falls, the 1983 solo album by keyboardist Greg Hawkes of The Cars.
Trance And Acid - Kai Tracid..... I will never be sick of it.....
This needs a part 2 with some The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Orbital and Chemical Bros patterns 🔥
Blessed by another Captain Pikant video just as I go on break at work? It’s a good day
I love an angry croaky frog 😊
