    We expect utes to be cars these days. One day when they’re soft as teddies to give all comfort and ride quality, we’ll complain that no one builds a proper ute anymore as they’ll fall apart. If you want a car, buy a sedan or SUV. Jeeeez.

    • @scm3294
      @scm3294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We'll only complain if the manufacturers fail to strike a good balance between comfort and off-road capability. Currently, the Ford Ranger strikes this balance best.

    I own a 4 year old Dmax and the inner guards have cracked for the second time in a year. $10,000 fix and Isuzu won’t cover it. Do your research on owners forums and read an article in 4x4 magazine about the inner guards cracking. They can’t handle corrugations. We are going down the VCAT road. Owning a Dmax has been a nightmare to me. My insurance company told me Isuzu and Hyundai are the absolute worse to deal with in terms of customer care and honouring warranties. You have been warned. Don’t be tricked by all the 4x4 celebs saying how reliable they are. Isuzu give them their cars for promotional purposes of course. Isuzu even told me that.

    • @tdock86

      No doubt the engine and drivetrain are reliable but the previous model suffered turbo and diff failures as well as cracking inner guards. The manual trans was also troublesome after speaking to a few other owners on the forums

If you see these things loaded to the hilt in the mining industry in 5 or 6 years in any numbers then you know they are good.

      @@mushimushimushi9176 D-Max been around a while now. Why are they rarely seen in mining industry in Australia ? Isuzu trucks are common, D-Max is not. All Hilux, Cruiser, Ranger. It's all about R&D for a market. Obviously Isuzu are targeting the city crowd who drive muddy puddles on the weekend or tow the caravan. Isuzu and Canter trucks do well in sales in mining. From my ever fading memory I have never seen a D-Max dropside Ute. If there is such a thing, stick 1000kg of equipment in the back and test the chassis on real time rough, dusty work on corrugated inland roads. We have an old 2008 Dual cab Hilux carrying 1.1 ton of wireline equipment for over 2 years now. Drive 8 or 9 hours to a hole over blacktop and isolated bush then idle the engine all day, every day to keep the batteries charged to power winch and computer gear. On a good contract you could do this about 300 days a year. D-Max has not targeted for work such as this. In saying all this, D-Max is an excellent vehicle for it's targeted customers.

      @pistolpeds 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Are you saying that the 3L Isuzu engine, if powered to the 2.8 Hilux equivalent may become unreliable or short lived ? Seems like a cop out to me. Engine bottom ends today are pretty well bullet proof unless you are still producing an old engine block design that has reached it safe limit of development without redesigning parts of it or all of it (Ford Barra). Heads are more a problem today (older Nissan Navara ) . Once a brand has a bad rep then it's becomes harder to recover it's credibility. Reliability is key in the 4x4 market. Isuzu saved a heap using this old, reliable engine with acceptable power for it's target market. They'll sell a heap of them.

      @@pistolpeds now the trend on diesel engines is downsizing, diesel engines manage really high pressures caused by the way the diesel works. What Isuzu says is that their engine is big and stronger to support over the time the hard work those engines are put on.

    • @pistolpeds
      @pistolpeds 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ernestorivera3936 I will not disagree with you. The trend to downsize and turbocharge diesels today has many people predicting a shorter life for them because of the higher pressures and efficiency of them. Fuel economy is paramount for families today where the budget is tight and maintenance on these types is so high and costly. The days of big, simple, underworked, low rpm deisels used almost exclusively to make a dollar are gone. Now everybody wants one including mom. My issue is not with the Isuzu engine but in my interest, the whole package under constant remote work service.

      @@denzelwashington6222 City people buy these things mostly so they feel safer carting the wife and kids around. If you currently drive a 3.8L v6 or 4L straight six GM or Ford car around town you may as well drive one of these tanks. It's only when you hit the open road you see the difference in fuel. Serious 4x4 trekkers spend a mint on their toys as well as fuel and they don't care. A small percentage of 4x4's get off the blacktop. I get 10km per litre around town and the same on the highway in a '94' 2.8L intercooled turbo deisel Pajero (rotary pump, no computer) with 480k km on the clock. My old 379k km 2002 AU Falcon gets 6km p/L around town and 12.5km p/L highway (through higher gearing and converter lock). Modern common rail has made deisel a freaking complicated nightmare. No $7k to $14k DPF replacements for me. There's a guy in the states is selling his own aftermarket DPF's from $2k. Probably cost you $1k to get them posted overseas.

The 4jj1, although not the smoothest engine out there, has proven itself brilliant in all ways, especially on long road trips, where 700km is easily achievable fully loaded, with a tent on the roof. The only thing that let us down was the rear springs, but that was on some shocking roads, and loaded to the legal limit.

    Nice to see Ulladulla and the South Coast get some air time. As for the utes, it's a subjective thing how heavily to weight the on- and off-road performances, but the Izuzu's superiority on everything short of the toughest 4wd tests augers well for the forthcoming BT50. It looks like only adding to the strengths of the D-Max, but let's see if it compromises any of the off-roading. As I've said before, it could be more city-focused.

    I have always been a Toyota owner
    But wow the D Max has really impressed
    Me ,however I did not take them off road
    And let’s be honest we are mostly on roads and if I was to spend time in comfort and a much quieter feel the D-Max wins hands down,also to obtain the same features that the DMax has to offer
    You will need to spend 10 -12 thousand dollars more for the Hilux now that is quite a jump .
    The Toyota test drive was noisy especially when you accelerate like it was stressing out it did not feel refined.The steering felt lite like I was not in full control of the road ,and on Sydney roads it was very bumpy & jittery .

    Fair dinkum lads! I've driven/owned the previous version of both for forestry/farming and driven extensively on/off road with a lot of 3.5 ton towing. I was always prejudiced against the Isuzu, but when I tried it, I was very impressed. They're very equal pickups, but the Isuzu tows better and is better on road and trails, while the Hilux had better axle articulation off road. The Toyota is tough, but equalled by the Isuzu, maybe beaten. The main difference to me is cost of ownership - the Toyota is way higher to buy and run. Yes it hold value better, but in the UK the Toyota is crazy money. If you can even get one in 2021! I'm driving Isuzu now and won't go back while we're still running diesel. Maybe Toyota will launch a better electric system, but I suspect they'll be beaten to that by Ford/VW. Can you imagine Toyota's profit margin on a Hilux at £45k!? I don't like being ripped off.

    Did you guys even check the tire pressure in the tires vs manufactures spec??? I know the dealers and tire shops love to crank up the rears because they know people will laden their vehicles without checking they have enough air to support the weight they have added. That will give any ute a "harsh" ride.

    Legendary "Isuzu Panther" from early 1990's was made to rival "Toyota Kijang" from 1970's both Made in Indonesia.
    And the Isuzu diesel is legendary, we still keep some and toughness of Toyota Kijang is equally the same legend, easy to maintain and robust Indonesian steel quality. Kijang itself means (Kerjasama Indonesia Jepang) collaboration between Indonesia and Japan, named as Toyota Tamara in The Philippines, and various other names in other countries worldwide.

    I think it’s more of a thing from top gear when they declared Hilux to be “unbreakable” and that has captured the mind of the masses. There are several other Utes in the market which would also be unbreakable and this case I totally agree Isuzu looks to be a better choice when it come to what you pay and what you get with all of those improvements.
