Hi, I'm Steve, nonda's lead mechanic engineer. Feel free to leave your comments here if you have any mechanic questions, I will be glad to help you out!
hey man i have an issue. so i been having this code show for my nissan altima 2010 and i changed my thermostat in hopes that was the issue but it wasn’t. so i then just now changed my ect sensor but yet the code still shows.. do i have to drive my car a certain amount of miles for the drive cycle to kick in and wait a few days to see if that code still shows? and if it still does, what other options are there to fix the issue if options A & B don’t work? please help. i need this code cleared so i can pass smog 😭
@@Swayyj look up how to bleed air from cooling system. And if anything, buy a $20 obd reader. I found one at a shop in my city, works great. Connects to my phone
@@Gabriel-pj2bk i bled the air but still the code shows.. i have an obd sensor.. i have done everything at this point. i’m convinced it has to be the wiring or something else at this point. the car runs fine i don’t know why i’m getting this issue. please help me. i’m about ready to take this to a mechanic or the dealership to get this fixed
@@Swayyj its hard to say man. Could be a wiring issue, also could be your coolant. Sometimes if the ratio of coolant isn't exactly 50/50, it may throw this code cuz coolant takes longer to heat up. Is it possible you maybe threw in the concentrated coolant without mixing it with water? That's the only other thing I can think of other than a wiring issue
I have this code in my 2001 Buick century. This car has only 42,000 miles (bought from elderly relative) Shop wanted $150 an hour just "diagnose " the problem!! I have Verizon Him app which gives me the code. It also says I need an 02 sensor.....so are these related? Car is not overheating.
I had a P0128 trouble code in a 2002 V6 (3.8L) Camaro. No leaks, had heat in the passenger compartment, but the temp gauge wouldn't move from "cold", and the cooling fans were running on "high", even when the engine was cold (below freezing). Replaced the ECT sensor, did not fix the problem. Replaced the thermostat, cleared the trouble code, after 2 miles, the temp gauge was working normally, the fans stopped spinning on the radiator, and the car ran smoother. Put the "bad" thermostat in some boiling water, it opened just as it should have, and closed when I dropped it in some cold water. One thing though, when I pulled the old thermostat out, the jiggle valve was not in the "up" position, it was in the "3 o'clock" position, so perhaps that was the cause of my problem. Engine only had 59,000 miles on it, and the thermostat wasn't "dirty" at all.
Good morning Steve I have a p0128 code, I bought the car off my neighbor he had replace the thermostat and hoses as most people do. Car ran fine then I got and secondary 02 code, fixed the issue then the p0128 came back, using logic it can be assumed that the ECT can be the cause
I have very similar issues. I have both P0128 and P0136 which is the secondary O2 code. How do you fix the secondary 02 code? Did you eventually fix your issue by changing ECT sensor? Thanks.
2018 Elantra 2.0 random p0128 shop said to replace thermostat housing with thermostat built in. Did that in November 2023. In January 2024 it came back and got a replacement u der warranty. Now its April and its happening again this time i saw a smal stream of fluid as i drove off on my drieway. The drip pan under the engine bay is wet but can't find where the fluid came from i get heat still and used the torque app and temp shows 199. And these factory ones are 212 boiling point thermostat. Not sure what to do. Are these just junk thermostats or is the ecu or pcm needing some dealer update? Any thoughts or alternative solutions please share.
Greetings friend. I see that my 2002 Chevrolet Tracker 2.0 or what would be the Suzuki Vitara does not reach the temperature, so I might think that it does not have a thermostat. I connected a scanner to it and performed a real-time analysis and the temperature varies between 50 and 77 °C, that is, it can be at 77 then it goes down to 65 then it goes up to 70 and then it goes down to 55 and so on. Do you think the fault could be that the coolant temperature sensor is damaged? The scanner marks the code P0128, P0113 and also P0335 of the CKP sensor. According to two mechanics who reviewed it, they say that this CKP code is normal for this vehicle, but for me what doesn't work is them because it can't be normal. The IAC valve was also changed but it is a compatible generic one. Anyway, if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it because when the car is hot it shakes and the revolutions drop, and it also uses too much gasoline. Thank you very much and excuse my English, I really speak Spanish and I used the translator.
Hey Steve I got a Honda civic 2012 and it’s throwing this code. Replaced thermostat but not thermostat housing. I have a metal housing and I really don’t think that’s the problem like some videos say. I see a lot of people changing out their housing because it’s rubber or plastic which makes sense. Anyways I also changes ECT Sensor and the car still runs like crap. I’ve heard of “Flashing your car and making sure no air is in the cooling system witch is what I’m going to try next.
@@nondainc still the same. Haven’t flashed the car yet but if that doesn’t work I guess I’ll replace the therm housing. I even did a full tuneup on the car new plugs/coil packs and replaced valve cover gasket which needed to be replaced. I just bought Kawasaki ninja 400 so been a little preoccupied since I messaged you last. I should probably mention the car does fine in drive while I’m applying gas but once a take my foot off the gas it start to run really ruff. Does the same thing in P and N. RPM’s don’t jump around but you can feel the funky vibrations of the engine. The P0128 code finally went away so my engine light is off but for how long is the question lol Thank you very much for checking in though. Once I figure out the problem I’ll try and remember to comment you back. Really appreciate it!
Hey Steve. I have a 2016 Kia Optima. I recently changed my oil on my car and the following day I noticed the engine light was on. Came up as code P0128. I have noticed little to no changes though. Car gets to normal temperature, heat works like normal, coolant levels are good. I’ve noticed an occasional white smoke from the back even when car is at running temperature. Any advice?? Thoughts on what I should do or check?
Hi Steve, I have a 2016 BMW 228i Xdrive and recently after getting my housing valve cover gaskets replaced by a bad mechanic my car got a U1408 and P0128 Codes right after they deliver me the car. By any chance do you know what might be the fix or the issue is? Thanks a lot!
Hi steve, your videos are very helpful. I have acura RL 2005 and it’s showing code P2183,P0128, P 0111 and P 1717. I’m bit confused that the fault is in censor 2 or thermostat pls help me. Thank you
Hello, it's probably an issue with the ECT2 sensor. Either a bad or leaking sensor and a damaged wiring. We also suggest to get your vehicle visually checked by your local mechanic for further diagnosis as you are getting multiple error codes.
nonda, hi steve, thank you for your information. I visually inspected and found wet place near thermostat (probably coolant). So I decided to change thermostat.
I have the issue with my Mini Cooper 2013. Just 1 day ago, one bad mechanic fixed my brakes. I am getting an error like an engine check. I went to O'Reilly to check why the engine light is on . So i got two error codes 1.P173B And 2.P0128 Even while my fan is not shutting off for 10mins even though I turned off my engine 🙃 any leads or suggestions please

if this engine check light code was not repaired for long time, what will happen ? i hear loud noise after 20 - 30 min of driving which is increased with pushing on accelerator !!! is it related to unrepaired coolant thermostat ?
Hi Roberto, as the temperature gauge not reaching the optimal levels, this can eventually damage your car’s engine and performance. Please check the condition of the thermostat, coolant temperature sensor/wiring and other components of the damaged sensor
Hey Man. Very nice and informative video. I got code P0128 on my 2010 ML550. Want to check coolant temp sensor before going to thermostat. Would u mind posting the video from very beginning till u get to sensor? Want to locate the sensor in my ML550? Or if u can share a pic or video where i can locate the sensor?
I have a 6.6 lbz duramax 280k with egr intact oem. I am puking coolant… my temp stays at 160 for 20 minutes then spikes to 240. For 10 seconds then drops to 180.. low coolant light pops on. Then sits at 190. Which is operating temp. I have heat the whole time and no loss of power or smoke. No coolant in oil.. it’s a diesel.. I haven’t changed thermostats yet. The mechanic I brought it to 3 years ago found a crack in my housing I think he re used old t stats
Hi Tom, kindly check your thermostat and the related wiring. A replacement could be necessary. You can observe the issue will be back specially during cold weather.
I have a similar issue on 2002 toyota avalon xls. The check engine light will come on and go off at times with no rhyme or reason. Not sure if it's the sensor or thermostat. For my vehicle the senor is easier to replace but I don't see any fluctuating in cool air or the temperature gauge, when going the dial sits right under half mark of C and H
