Are you sure this wasn't your valve cover gasket leaking? Sometimes those things leak and cause small misfires that mess with the 02 sensors and the cat.
The spark plug fouler works great. Only problem is that now in California during smog check the attendant will pass a mirror on a handle under the chassis or get down on the ground and look for an extender. If you have one on, you will fail smog, as they are not legal.

Carbon buildup can also trigger Code P0420. My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo threw up the code even tho there were no symptoms of bad cats or o2 sensor so I thought what if it's carbon buildup? So I used 2 cans of Seafoam Intake Cleaner and after following directions it killed Code P0420 and the check engine light never came back on
@Terrion Barlow 10 seconds after the seafoam blew all the carbon out. My recommendation is if the light doesn't turn off have the dealership or whoever else that has a OBD2 scanner they can erase the code
My muffler was making a popping sound today after changing spark plugs and ignition coil. I reinstalled the spark plugs after checking to see if they may have been damaged but they checked out fine. The rough idling i had before went away so i was pleased. However 30 seconds into turning my 2002 ford escape on this popping sound started and i see the muffler back fire. Im going to try any of these steps. Hopeful that it works! Thanks for the informative video.
I had the popping sound and that sound was actually small broken off pieces of the honeycomb rattling inside. It got very loud and annoying. Had to change the cat

My cars service engine soon light was tripped not once, but TWICE driving over the same exact crazy deep(I have 17 inch tires and the entire tire fits inside this dip. Replaced o2 sensor and it worked until I drove through that same damn dip again, as soon as my tires were in it BAM service engine soon light popped back on
Try this like I did. It’s free. So before you go spending money just disconnect battery to reset code. Drive around on freeway. If it doesn’t come back on it was a glitch. After I reset code it never came back on. Passed smog and it’s been 2 years. No check engine light. Try this before you go spending lots of money unnecessary

To use the cleaner , Liqui Moly 8931, you can't pour it into the tank, you have to spray it into the carburetors ( sorry I don't know exactly were). To do that you have to buy also an acid-resistant vaporizer and the one from Liqui Moly costs around 35 euros. So, could you please let me know how to use the cleaner 8931? Best regards
I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze with 1.4L engine it has 180,000 mile. I have been getting a P0420 code. It would go away and come back. Before replacing any parts do this. I fixed it just by disconnecting the Negative side on the battery 1st. Now find the computer it’s on the side where the battery is. It’s has 3 connectors on it. I disconnected all 3 connectors and cleaned each side male and female connector with CRC 05103 QD Electronic Cleaner. Let it dry 15 minutes. I plugged all 3 back in. I installed negative battery cable. I started and drove the car 50 miles. It never came back. Updated After driving the Engine light did come back. The same error code P0420 came back.

Not easy at all to remove cat converter. Non-foulers are illegal on o2 sensors in most states. Gas additives only work for a couple of hundred miles then the light comes back on. One 16 oz. bottle is now around $30.

if you have your original cat..have muffler shop port a new downstream o2 sensor port at end of your cat.right at the tip.of cat and screw in your 02 and have them screw a plug in oem one amd see p0420 disappear..

Hi Saul, if you already replaced the catalytic converter then it's possible that the issue is coming from another parts. Please repair if there are leaks in the muffler or exhaust manifold, and inspect your front or rear oxygen sensor.

I had it on once and it went away on its own..it came back few days ago so I took it to my mechanic and he’s telling me that I MUST change the catalytic converter and that There’s no other option. @@kmtalko I don't know where you live so in Canada I sold them through grand west.. summit Racing also has o2 simulators .. some are vehicle specific.. adversely adding a 50ohm resistor in line on some applications can also achieve this.. you will need some research

That o2 sensor is the wrong one for starters, That's a downstream narrowband and the upstream is wideband these days which looks different then that one that also probably why you got a P0420 code.

Hi Marixa, kindly check the condition of the spark plug. If the condition is good, then the issue could be coming from the converter (needs replacement). If worn, you can replace the plugs and clear the code.

Hi Chea, both of these codes imply a failed catalytic converter. As per your vehicle's make/model, a bad catalytic converter or a faulty oxygen sensor might be the cause why the code stored. We also suggest checking the wiring condition (downstream O2 sensor) and if there's an upstream leak in the exhaust system.

Hello, kindly check if there's any leak to the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and exhaust pipes pre-catalytic converter. Repair the leak, clear the code and complete several drive cycles afterwards. If the issue will continue to persist, please check the voltage reading of the downstream O2 sensor, this will tell you weather catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

I'm getting that code on my Honda Civic 2013, but sometimes y it goes away when I complete the gas on my vehicle and spend the gas and put the tank full the code come back again, sometimes it passes 15-20 days without the code, and for some reason come back suddenly when I put gas on the tank.
Yes that's all they are doing,the real problem still exists. If you or anybody else does this .Your only looking to be causing other problems down the road because you just permanently made the ecm think that what ever the driving conditions it's always putting out o bS emissions and running at peak efficiency for exhaust emissions when in fact it is not.😂😂😂😂😂

Hi Michael, the most common reason that triggers this code is a faulty catalytic converter but we suggest checking also the exhaust system for damage/leaks and check the downstream O2 sensor.
Hi Dashty, you can check the exhaust system under your car. It looks like a bulge in the middle of the exhaust piping between the muffler and where the headers connect to the exhaust downpipes. If the bulge is not there, you do not have a catalytic converter.

Hi Kevin, you can smell a terrible odor or the fuel pedal can feel like it’s vibrating. We suggest getting your vehicle visually checked by your local mechanic for further diagnosis.
@ChadHer the brackets should have a thread in the middle like normal o2 sensors I thought. Maybe you didn't realize but it should just screw in the middle of the bracket. If not you could also try.. wiring a capacitor between downstream o2 sensor and your ecm. There's videos for this as well. You can also try adding washers just to make less space for the sensor to poke into your cat. But honestly the way I passed my inspection with my cat code still triggering. I just cleared my engine codes. And got all 5 of 6 codes in ready mode. Than the cat code is the hardest to get in ready mode. So if you go to the shop with the cat sensor not in ready mode they will still pass you since the law let's 1 sensor be not ready.
@@peanbean1973 I seen some 02 bracket with thread but mine looks fixed cuz it doesn't have anything for a socket tool to turn it. Also thanks for the ready mode infos. After clear my codes, I drove over 100 miles and the evap monitor still show incomplete but everything else show "ok".

That makes sense. My valve cover gasket exploded sending oil everywhere. I bet that oil got into my plugs.
Then drive in a highway and then guess what the cel will throw up again 😂

Did you figure it out? Something similar happened to me with a Hyundai Accent, turned I put the spark plug wires out of order.
Too much backfire will cause catalytic converter to melt inside.

Check your coolant temp. Thermostat might be stuck open and the engine never reaches proper operating temperature.

My car showing p0420 only above speed of 80Km/h. If I maintain speed below 80km/h then the code do not appears again.

Misfire could be 20 different things. But make sure the stereo isn't asking for a code.
The code is on the glovebox.
I have a 2017 spark had 420 code. They replaces the transmission AND the catalytic converter. Now 2 months later same code and slow.uphills again. What do you think the issue is. Car has 84,000 total miles.

Not easy at all to remove cat converter. Non-foulers are illegal on o2 sensors in most states. Gas additives only work for a couple of hundred miles then the light comes back on. One 16 oz. bottle is now around $30.
HI Noda, I have a 2003 Audi A4 T1.8 engine with the PO420 engine code. I reset the check engine lightened code, but after 250 miles of driving it comes back on, I replaced the catalytic converter 5 months ago and verified with two shops that I don't have an exhaust leak. I'd like to try method three and install a spacer. Which oxygen sensor should I replace and install the spacer, the O2 sensor before or after the converter?
Hi Joseph, it's after the catalytic converter.
You replaced with audi genuine catalytic converter & o2 sensor? ATG & I say many buy the cheap & get ride of the car.
Many owners are screwed & can't afford these replacement because due to these high prices.
Cleaning /or rigging something will NOT pass emission inspection/tag.
Got this code today and I try will at least one of the three options.

if you have your original cat..have muffler shop port a new downstream o2 sensor port at end of your cat.right at the tip.of cat and screw in your 02 and have them screw a plug in oem one amd see p0420 disappear..

Hello, we suggest inspecting the wiring harness first for possible issue. Oxygen sensor might also need a replacement.

@@asadullahsediqi7192 If you shake it and hear, or feel pieces inside rattling...it's broken. You may detect pieces rattling if you tap the CAT when it is still installed.

Hi Saul, if you already replaced the catalytic converter then it's possible that the issue is coming from another parts. Please repair if there are leaks in the muffler or exhaust manifold, and inspect your front or rear oxygen sensor.
Hello I have a 2005 Lexus is300 . I have the same code p0420. I had it on once and it went away on its own..it came back few days ago so I took it to my mechanic and he’s telling me that I MUST change the catalytic converter and that There’s no other option. Which sounds like some nonsense to me. I’m not a mechanic myself but come on..There’s gotta be another way.

@@kmtalko I don't know where you live so in Canada I sold them through grand west.. summit Racing also has o2 simulators .. some are vehicle specific.. adversely adding a 50ohm resistor in line on some applications can also achieve this.. you will need some research

That o2 sensor is the wrong one for starters, That's a downstream narrowband and the upstream is wideband these days which looks different then that one that also probably why you got a P0420 code.

Hi Marixa, kindly check the condition of the spark plug. If the condition is good, then the issue could be coming from the converter (needs replacement). If worn, you can replace the plugs and clear the code.

Hi Chea, both of these codes imply a failed catalytic converter. As per your vehicle's make/model, a bad catalytic converter or a faulty oxygen sensor might be the cause why the code stored. We also suggest checking the wiring condition (downstream O2 sensor) and if there's an upstream leak in the exhaust system.
Check your pcv valve. My car threw this exact code and it ended up being a stuck closed pcv valve.

Hello! 2012 Nissan Titan V8 I had a check engine light on for about a month now with no notable problems. Checked the gas tank top for cracks. Just scanned my truck and got the error code PO420. I have also just noticed that truck will eventually run hot while idling for over 20 minutes.

Hello, kindly check if there's any leak to the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and exhaust pipes pre-catalytic converter. Repair the leak, clear the code and complete several drive cycles afterwards. If the issue will continue to persist, please check the voltage reading of the downstream O2 sensor, this will tell you weather catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

By increasing the the space between the O2 sensor and Cat aren't you just getting rid of the code and not addressing the problem?
Yes that's all they are doing,the real problem still exists. If you or anybody else does this .Your only looking to be causing other problems down the road because you just permanently made the ecm think that what ever the driving conditions it's always putting out o bS emissions and running at peak efficiency for exhaust emissions when in fact it is not.😂😂😂😂😂

Hi Dashty, you can check the exhaust system under your car. It looks like a bulge in the middle of the exhaust piping between the muffler and where the headers connect to the exhaust downpipes. If the bulge is not there, you do not have a catalytic converter.

After getting a P0430 code only, I had driver side of catalytic converter replaced w/ factory part (also had P0301 code so I coil and plug replaced). You're supposed to put it on only the downstream so only the downstream is lower o2 reading.

@ChadHer the brackets should have a thread in the middle like normal o2 sensors I thought. Maybe you didn't realize but it should just screw in the middle of the bracket. If not you could also try.. wiring a capacitor between downstream o2 sensor and your ecm. There's videos for this as well. You can also try adding washers just to make less space for the sensor to poke into your cat.
But honestly the way I passed my inspection with my cat code still triggering. I just cleared my engine codes. And got all 5 of 6 codes in ready mode. Than the cat code is the hardest to get in ready mode. So if you go to the shop with the cat sensor not in ready mode they will still pass you since the law let's 1 sensor be not ready.
@@peanbean1973 I seen some 02 bracket with thread but mine looks fixed cuz it doesn't have anything for a socket tool to turn it. Also thanks for the ready mode infos. After clear my codes, I drove over 100 miles and the evap monitor still show incomplete but everything else show "ok".
