    I recently received this Tascam 12 as a random gift and have been contemplating the most effective ways to utilize it and enhance my overall setup. My primary speaker is an old Beats Boombox Gen 1 that has been my go-to speaker for years!

    I just got the Tascam 12. I've been away from recording for 8 years or so and found homes for my DA88s and Mackie 1604s. I do still have a Tascam 488 (In the box with manuals) but as I was putting it on line I started to rethink the learning curve to get back to where I was with it in 1993 and pivoted to the 12. What good are all of those CRO2 masters anyway? I like this little guy and as an IT professional I appreciate the evolution of the HW and SW. I'll keep watching your channel and ramp up on the tricks and traps of this unit. Thanx

    Wish it had more channels. I used them all up on just drums. So i have to bounce that mix and keep the drums as a final mix and record the rest to fit the mix of the drums.

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hear ya, tyler. I kind of wish I'd gotten the 16 or 24 sometimes. The tracks get used up quick and I'm not even recording drums. Bouncing down can have some advantages, though, It keeps the session moving and forces commitment to the sounds but I could see it also being frustrating if you want to go back and fix something

    • @truthwinseverytime8805
      @truthwinseverytime8805 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the exact issue I'm having. 7 drum mics on channels 1-7. Record drums to those. Bouncing down to stereo you have to have the mix just right or like you said then you have to work the other instruments around the untweakable individual drum tracks. So what I think I'll have to do is take the 7 drum tracks and import them into a DAW. Right now I have Traction Waveform and GarageBand on my 2011 iMac. I could go in and record the other tracks in the DAW either using the Model 12 as an audio interface or my Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic500 preamp which has an XLR (with a phantom button) or in the l/r trs jacks which the left is a High Z. Then take the tracks back into the Model 12 to mix and send to master. I also have a Behringer Eurorack MX 802A mixing board I could incorporate also. And I've thought of maybe laying the final mix on to a cassette before sending to master for that analog warmth. While I wish I could afford the Model 24 which would allow for true all in one multi-tracking to just the desk unit, I also want to get my podcast going again which the Model 12 is good for also.
      Too bad you can't daisy chain and sync 2 Model 12's like you can with the Zoom R12. That would be badass. 16 XLR inputs you can simultaneously record to its own track. And then 4 stereo tracks. And if using one as the main in the DAW having to use channels 1 and 2 for the DAW return from the PC would still leave enough of the other XLR channels free to truly multi-track to just the Model 12's.

    got a model 12 in July and same as you, I've set my cassette recorder aside. I never made the jump to DAW recording so i guess I'm a weirdo because everybody looks at me confused when i tell them it. Today i got an ART VLA pro ii compressor and tried it a little. I need to boost the signal with a pre-amp to get the signal hotter, I do have that little ART tube pre-amp and am going to try driving the signal hotter to get a better signal than the first a temp at trying this out.

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, bun! I remember you saying you've gotten the 12. Nah, I feel like that's par for the course. I luckily got started with SoundForge and ACID back in the 2000s around the time I was introduced to the 424, so I kind of learned the technologies in tandem. I think there's a lot of people out there who never got into DAW recording. Idk if you have a Mac but I think Garageband is the most user friendly DAW for starting out, or at least it used to be. I remember having the same need for a preamp with the VLA. The tube pre should get you there! That's what I used to use, too! Cheers, thanks for watching, and happy recording!

    • @jesusgavemeaids
      @jesusgavemeaids ปีที่แล้ว

      DAWs sucks anyway. They're either too expensive or even don't work at all in some cases with the free ones. I've tried several free ones that don't work at all. One of them that works best of all the free ones I've tried - Audacity - sucks because none of the tracks are in sync & it's near impossible to get everything in sync, so it's useless if you're recording multiple tracks.
      Been wanting the model 12 but I just have to save up before I can afford it.
      I've been using a 424mkiii I bought new years ago, but it recently took a crap on me. It still works but everything sounds terrible no matter how I EQ it before or after laying down a track...no matter what I do nothing sounds even decent on it, though I've made some great recordings over the years.

    Hey thanks so much for this video. I'm thinking about a Model 12 and how it could work with my Apollo Duo. So the way yours is routed into the stereo channel.. how would you go about multitrack recording with it? Can you assign the line in to record to different tracks as you work? Or would you need to physically switch to the line in to other mono channels as you go? Also, is the excellent preamp quality of the Apollo being degraded by passing it through the pre amps of the Tascam before being recorded onboard or in the DAW do you think?

    Hey, thanks for letting us in your studio! I work with hardware as well and currently use Tascam DP-008EX but it's probably better for on-the-job recording. It's 2 tracks of simultaneous recording is really limiting.
    This Model 12 looks like it could be a good upgrade and a solution for a mixer, which I need to use a rack mounted compressor for sidechain!

    Really like your channel...kind of watching "Back to the Future" on a large flat screen:). Here's one wish for a future video: I recently bought the Tascam Model 24, but I am still not sure if I am going to keep it or buy the Model 12 ( seems more singer\songwriter type, though it's sadly not analog like the 16 and 24).. . Anyway, here's the thing: if I record a track on the SD card and then send this playback track to my hardware compressor ( on the playback channel press the sub button and then from sub out to compressor input and from compressor output to another input channel of the model12), it works perfect... I can afterwards blend the first track together with the compressed track and it sounds clear and beautiful. ...The big problem is when using the model as an interface...when I playback a recorded track from my daw on the model and do the same thing ( like I do when recording on the SD card) , meaning here that I record the compressed track on a new track in my daw, the next step is always a pain in the ass. Cause when I try to blend the two tracks together in the daw there's always a phasing sound ...I always thought that's a latency issue so I zoomed the two tracks in the daw and tried to fit them as good as I can...but it still doesn't sound like on the SD card...i would really appreciate it if you could solve that problems for us...cause I know that there is a lot of people out there who try to use analog mixer and gear and combine it with the digital world.....
    Sorry for my nearly perfect English, but I had to miss some English lessons back at school time, cause my 424 needed a lot of attention back in that days

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Helge, I haven't dived into using the Model as an interface yet. I think the best advice I could give would be to split the signal before you run it to the 12. One signal goes to the 12, the other goes into your hardware compressor and back to a new track. Let me know how it shakes out

    • @helgefaccini1488
      @helgefaccini1488 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this is another reason I wanted to get one, re: 424. 2/3 of mine have issues and I feel like it's only a matter of time for the 3rd one. Not to say that they can't be fixed but the 12 works very similarly. I can sketch out ideas or demo a track and then use the 424 for the final recording once I know what I want to record. It'll put the 424 through less use. Thanks, Yellow. Cheers. I hope the Fall Song Challenge is going well for you!

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I'm stingy when it comes to using my 424 believe it or not. With the computer/digital recorders, it's made it easy to loop parts and record a draft first. I started one track that was not what I was thinking of doing. I might use that one if nothing else develops. It's just bass, drums, and vocals at the moment... might be ripe for a 4-track version! How many usb (computer out) track can you record on the flash card.
    I have gotten where I like to track everything live with both Ableton and the musicians in the room and then just fix the screwups.

Once I have everything recorded and sounding the way I want I’m going to play it back into the room through my system because that’s when it usually sounds the best. Then I’ll use my Ribbon mic to record the mastered song into a 1968 Teac 3 mixer and from there into a cassette. The deck recording will then be fed back into the computer. I’m assuming they recorded a lot like this in the 50’s but I can’t really find out much about this method. I thought of this method because I do it all the time with my cell phone. Any suggestions?

    So for example can I run a guitar/bass through all of the tracks or is it only 1 and 2 that have instrument inputs?

      Hey man, you can run electro acoustic guitar through all the tracks but bass and electric just through 1 and 2. Although with a D I box you can run electric and bass into them all, can get not bad ones for next to pennies

      Channels 1-10 can all accept guitar/bass direct in. You just have to hit the INST button on the corresponding channel. Check out page 25 of the manual: tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/model_12/efs_model12_om_vc.pdf

    Are the equalizers or compressors analogue? Also, is there any way to output individual channels’ signals? I’m looking at using this for its preamps and for its channel strip, but NOT as an interface. I could switch between interfaces, but i thought it would be cool to have 2 gain stages for capture, so that i could drive the model 12 preamps hard, and decrease the input gain at my interface. I’ll appreciate answers if anyone can help. Thanks!

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You might want to look into the Model 16 or the 24. As far as I know, those are analog mixers. The 12 has some other things going on under the hood that makes it a digital mixer. I would try to find an older mixer if you want to distort it: any of the old 4-track preamps sound great distorted and there's all sort of old mixing consoles that can sound great distorted. Good luck!

    Hey, interesting. Hope this question is not too trivial.. do you leave all this gear set-up/out all the time, and if so, how do you combat dust? Maybe it’s just my place but dust is everywhere! Im going to check the model 12.

    • @424Recording
      @424Recording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it is out all the time. The best way to combat dust is to get a paint brush. Get a soft bristled one from the hardware store (splurge a little on a good one) and whenever you see some dust accumulate, paint brush it away! I mean I guess it's just getting pushed around but it won't be on the machines. Thanks for watching

      It depends on the user. People who use multitrack recorders, mixers, and who do live sound will be feel right at home using one of these; if they're coming from a DAW, though, there will be a learning curve for sure
