Most of us are aware of popular MODEL12 features. However, there are many other notable features of the unit that are often overlooked and shouldn’t be. I wanted to share some of them with anyone interested, in hopes that this information serves useful. Thanks for watching.
Things I like about model 12 1. MIDI out - recording synths, groove boxes - pressing record also send a play to the synth for perfectly timed recordings 2. Track swap- you can swap recorded tracks to other channels so no having to change cables 3. Best dawless interface. Saves by itself. 4. Meter is helpful 5. The loop function - can be as long as you want or you can repeat indefinitely long loops. Vamp or just repeating What i don’t love is 1. Run out of channels but you can stereo mix down and put it on a channel for indefinite tracks while also keeps your tracks able to be downloaded. 6. Effects are not great but reamping or using inserts is possible 7. It’s heavy. Well made but heavier than a 13 laptop. It’s very good product. I would replace it for the exact model of it lost or broke. I use elektron, Roland, Alesis for drum tracks and play guitar and bass over the top. It’s my lounge room- dawless studio And I have a daw studio for finalizing mixes.
I almost got a Model series or DP but then realized I don't need a built in recorder. I use a DAW or MPC Live 2 for that. All I need is at least 8 or more combo jack inputs & good preamps. The Model 12 is good for the price but for a little more money a Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre USB-C Audio Interface has better preamps and sound quality.
I appreciate the video and the time you spent creating this. I am a DJ that needs a portable mixer for live event with sound coming from my DJ mixer into an outboard mixer. I need control and headroom for more microphones than my DJ mixer has and the option to add effects. I also do a lot of home recording/production and streaming. This mixers seems to be the perfect all-in-one solution! Thanks for the review and Great Video!
Great informative video. Do you have information on how to transfer my songs that I've recorded on my tascam 12, to the sd card on my tascam 12? Thanks in advance.
Very informative and well presented thank you.I'm so impressed by this machine and my decision to purchase one is becoming much clearer.Quick question please - how do firmware updates work ? For example i buy the machine straight after release to the market and it has v 1.0 then later v 1.1 is released followed by v 1.3 later still. If however the machine is purchased with v 1.0 ( second hand for example ) and needs to be updated to the latest v 1.3 - would one have to install v 1.02 first and then v 1.3 or are the features of v 1.2 included in v 1.3 ? Hope that makes sense ! I seem to recall reading somewhere that each firmware update must be installed in order of release ?
A new firmware release is generally built using the previous release. If you have the current release you should have all of the previous features as well. Thanks for watching.
If I'm understanding your question as intended, I believe so. The unit has the same base software engine as the DP-24, and you can do that on the DP. Thanks for watching.
Great video man, for example I have the mic plugged into channel 1 recorded unto that channel, but now I want to rec another vocal track on channel 2, how do you assign to channel 2, I couldn't figure that out , I had to plug out the mic out of 1 to 2 to get the signal, on my tascam dp-008ex I could jus assign where I want to record to any channel, Can you Help, thanks man
The answer is yes. This unit can generate MIDI TIME CODE and MIDI CLOCK when the recorder is playing back or recording. The generated MIDI data is output from the MIDI OUT connector and simultaneously sent to a computer connected via USB. However, it would be simpler to buy a MODEL 24 or connect to a DAW if you require many more tracks. Thanks for watching.
@@PowercoatMusic thank you for replying. Does one Model 12 become the master MIDI sync midi clock? If we hook them together and I hit record on one of them will it trigger record on the other simultaneously? And then I presume the one that we hit record on is the master so to speak?
@@truthwinseverytime8805 Yes. You would set one as the master, and the other as the slave. The one will control the other using the transport controls.
always good content and very well explained! One question please. I was hesitating between Model 24 or Model 12 and in the end I decided on Model 12 because of all the midi options and DAW control. But since I have a lot of instruments, I don't think I'll have enough tracks to record a jam on the Model 12 alone, how would two Model 12s perform midi-connected for direct recording and for later DAW control?
To answer your question, you should be good to go either way. MODEL 12 has both USB MIDI and the 5 PIN DIN MIDI ports, so it's a matter of preference as to how you want to configure the unit for your specific workflow. Thanks for watching and sharing.
I've read in multiple threads (while I wait for my unit to arrive) that you can change that in the audio/midi settings on Mac, and I believe somewhere on PC.
@@tubasco504 Yea I did figure that out. I had gotten replies from Tascam that appeared to indicate they didn't know that but yes, this does work. It can be a bit wonky in that opening different apps seem to disrupt it but it works
I wish Tascam would put MIDI in/ out on all of their mixers. Period! It makes it easier for me because I am an electronic music guy and it makes it all there more easier.
Can you still use midi with a model 24 if you use a usb hub with for example a Akai MPC Key 61 & assign accordingly, then connect usb from the Akai to the usb on the Tascam? 🤔
I believe I listed the compatible DAWs at the time of the presentation. Tascam updates the firmware occasionally. Check with their website in the support section to see if your software is on the list. Thanks for watching.
Nice work on those details. I have yet to find any information about what folks are getting in the real world for recording time, using only the onboard media in a stand alone setting. Let's say I want to record three sets of live music, for three nights in a row, Friday - Saturday and Sunday, all channels at 44.1 and 16 bit. How many hours can one get on a 64GB or 128GB card? Also, does the unit have an easily accessible readout for space remaining on the card? Thanks for an informative video. Update - Update - Update. Good work Tascam.
Smaller screen's a bummer, but remember to take stock in what you really need. For more help check out my video "Tascam DP-32SD Digital Portastudio vs Tascam Model 24", on this channel. Thanks for watching.
It is not that bad to at,I have one….the advantage over the tascam dp-24 Sd with just usb is the physical midi inputs &,outputs, plus it have usb for Daw control

What about using with Fl Studio? I'm assuming there are no pre-mapped settingsfor FL currently, but you could still setup connections manually?
