I use the Model 12 with my Macbook and Ableton. You can move the general output to the stereo channels (I use 9/10) in Mac's Audio Midi Setup -> Configure Speakers. Then in Ableton, just set the Master to output on 9/10 as well. This frees up channel 1 and 2 to use for inputs.
With a recent update, the Model 12 can change the main stereo out from your computer (or possibly the MPC One). Go to USB audio > PC CH1/2> change from the default 1/2 to 9/10 and the output will go do your last fader.

I bought one of these in April 2021. I now mix and record all my gigs with it. The only connection between this and a DAW is when I load tracks from the M12's SD card onto my computer and then open them in Logic for final EQing. The DAW becomes a mastering tool, which the M12 was not intended to be. I believe strongly in getting the sound and performance right, wherever you record to. Think of the great recordings that were done on machines that had nowhere near this capability. Musicians and technicians got it right, in the studio.
Are you able to export each channel individually to a DAW to mix? I’m want a mixer that can record a live performance then export each individual channels’ recording to mix in a DAW, not just a stereo file of the entire mix.

I basically use my model 24 as a mixer, recording into my Tascam DP32. AVB is the newest and most accessible in audio interfaces. There are trade offs, but for music recording, I don’t think AVB has a downside. The great advantage to any of the three (DANTE, MADI or AVB) is running multiple interfaces in multiple locations, over one cable. Got drums in the basement, vocal set up in the bathroom, guitar amps in the garage and a control room in your bedroom? Then this could be good. If its just you in a room, it might be overkill.
I’m thinking of getting the Model 12 to record rehearsals and gigs. Kind of inspired after watching the Beatles documentary to get a bit more done live. There’s also the Zoom LiveTrak L12 which could achieve the same thing. Has anybody compared the 2 units? My perception is that the Tascam will sound a bit better, but not sure if that is true. The Tascam does look better for live use having physical knobs for E.Q. rather than in a menu.
The inability to record effects to the card is criminal. This could well be a all in the box unit with a few modifications and they wouldn't cost Tascam a lot to do it. I'm a big fan of their stuff, and even have a Tascam DP24SD, but the Model 24 has been attracting me for quite awhile. But I would like to be able to do everything right in the mixer and card, if I need to take a break away from DAW recording. Yes, you can feed an external processor into empty tracks, but that kind of loses the idea of all in one box mixing/recording. Thanks for taking time to do an honest, hands on review.
They updated firmware to now let you play usb on 1/2 (default) or now can pick channel 9/10 (single fader) or directly to the master channel- freeing up 1&2 👍
Awesome! I got a digitakt / ableton / synth / modular kind of setup (starting to grow) and my soundcard quickly started getting limited (in multiple senses). Seems like a mixer like that, maybe even the model 16, would be ideal. Great review, thank you!
Great videos and hit the nail on the head for the downsides. I also wish the individual track recording was post fader and panning. The daw control is ok. Used it for a while but am now going back to using my midi fighter twister for midi control
The video is a year old, so this is a bit late, but if you are using the Model 12 as an interface, you can do a post-FX send from the main bus (in Reaper it’s a “hardware send”, I don’t know about other DAWs) to channels 9/10 and then you can use channels 1 and 2, as well as the inserts on those channels. (Maybe someone already said that.)
Thanks for this video, I'm actually looking to buy this tascam model 12 for my akai force, it seems that it's a nice mixer and quite alone to work with the Akai devices.
Hey, Nice video and good explanation. I have one question. Im Planing a full dawless setup right now. Let’s assume i use Maschine or Force and one Mono synth bass and a stereo Synth for pads lets say. Is it possible that i route the baseline synth and the Pad synth to the force and sidechain the external synthesizers or using EFX from the Forces EFX plugins? Thanks guys!
New sub here, and really liked your review of model twelve. I am in the market for a mixer and the 24 is in my sights. But could you go into what you have as a analog mixer, like the one you have in the background, and describe how its integrated into your set-up? And what do you prefer if I'm just looking at an in home set uo? greatly appreciated! Thanks for excellent content for people just getting into music creation and excellent music too, by the way!
Thanks for the review. Particularly interested in the tascam for multitracking my modular system and really glad you use it for this and have had that experienc. Is it ok level wise to go straight from Eurorack oscillators and FX then into the 12? I'm guessing the best workflow is using it as an audio interface into the daw to multi track record. Any tips, suggestions would be amazing before I dropped the money on the 12. Thanks!
HI, thankyou for the videos they are great! and so is the music you make!! I am wanting to go to the 16 or 24, but my main hesitation is that neither of those seem to have a midi input. This will be my main interface with a 15-inch dell xps, so not many other inputs on the computer side. Do you think the lack of midi on the larger boards will be an issue or is there a better workaround that I am not aware of? I have also been eyeing the new Yamaha dm3, but my needs are more recording and studio than live. I just like the option of doing both. Thanks, it's a lot just wanted whatever guidance you had.
thank you for your detailed review. i'm a little confused, can we assign plugin parameters in a daw to knobs in tascam just like in a standard midi controller. i was planning to use it like a dj mixer, but if we can't assign for example a dj eq tool in a daw to the knobs in tascam, it is pretty useless to me. thanks in advance for your support.
Great video. I am considering the Model 12 as dedicated recorder for my tracks, which I will transfer and edit in my DAW (Vegas Pro) I have a question for you. If I then wanted to fly an edited work mix (WAV File) back to the 12 as a guide for for additional tracking does the unit allow that kind of back and forth between the unit and PC? Thank you!
I did not initially want the Model 12 for DAW control, but after testing it out it took a permanent spot on my desk. Unfortunately, I had to take an audio interface(24-bit/192Khz capable with much better pre-amps) and MPC Live 2 off the desk to make room. There's probably very few options that can do what this thing does at this price-point.
@@TeftyMeems Well... now I am using it as a DAW controller + audio interface. I have a mic in 1, keeping 2 & 3 open for guitar/Headrush MX5, Peak in 7/8 and Take 5 in 9/10. That leaves channels 5 & 6 open for mono-synths or a poly-synth, if needed. I use the faders to manipulate my levels in Ableton... I prefer drawing in my automations rather than using faders/pans, anyway, so I'm not missing motorized faders or recall. It's not perfect, but what out there is? The pre-amps are okay... barely capable of pushing an SM7B, but I don't use that mic. Yes, I initially acquired the Model 12 for a DAW-less setup w/ MPC Live 2, but I'm impressed that the Tascam can do all of this at this price-point. Seems like the drivers are decently written. I have a Focusrite Clarett + 2Pre available, but it's been doing duties with my laptop.
If I have multiple instruments can, how many can use stereo configuration at one time? I mainly use my daw to record in audio and piece things together from there, so it won't be a live performance, but I want to avoid unplugging cables all day. Currently I use a Steinberg Audio Interface and this seems like an affordable option to replace my audio interface and use it as a mixer. I don't mind switching cables here or there, but I want to avoid it for the most part.
I just started using mine for the first time this past weekend... I love it. Took me some trial and error before I figured out all the little button and sliders, and how they all work in unison. I used to use an old drive-based Tascam DP-01. I am realizing, however, that since it's an SD card, I can't cut/copy-paste sections of my tracks like I could on the DP-01. Anyone have any info on that? I don't see anything about cutting/copying-pasting data within tracks in the user manual. :( I had been using GarageBand to mix my DP-01 tracks. However, I bought this planning to use it for both recording tracks and mixing. Hmmmm....
I’ve watched all the videos on TH-cam about the 12 but was waiting for your review. Quick question. When the mpc is connected by USB to the 12, do the 1/4 inch outputs on the mpc still send a signal? I currently send one of the outs of the mpc to another sampler. Can I still do that or do I need to use the aux outs of the 12? Thanks for the great videos!
Unfortunately that’s not possible. I’m using a MPC Live and recently got a Model 12 and realized that if you connect another interface to the MPC it takes over all the “sound duties” from the it. It would be great if that was something they could add in future updates.
I have an 18i20, but I kind of want a mixer with eq, and compression built in, as well as tactile faders, I'm getting sick of mousing in daw. Do you use this mixer with another audio interface, or do you use this as its own interface?
I've been experiencing some wonkiness with swapping tracks. I might try to swap track 1 with track 6 but when I listen back, it either didn't swap or another track got involved somehow. Also, if you want to mixdown 4 tracks to a stereo frack, all the tracks that have recording on them will automatically be included in the mixdown. Even if you bring the faders down, it doesn't matter. I've had the Model 12 for a year and I still do not fully understand it.
On the cover image for this video, you have a nice angled stand for the Tascam Model 12 Mixer, yet that stand only appears in the very beginning of this video. Please tell me, where can we buy that stand?
Can one save presets/scenes for the tracks? Can you recall the tracks settings for eq, fx, faders when you load a song? Or do you need to adjust the levels for each song manually when performing live?
Was goin to get the allen and heath xone px5 for my studio/jam mixer...it seemed perfect....only thing is that its not available anywhere...and No one knows when it will be...and also it increased in price 300€...so 1500€ atm....now feveresly looking for something else....this and the roland mx1 are looking like OPTIONS...but both feel like a substitute for what I really want/need...just releasing some fumes here 😂
Thanks for this. I'm currently debating getting one of these or a Zoom L12 or just get a traditional audio interface and a dedicate my old laptop as my jam station recording setup.
Both have benefits. If you're using the DAW 90% of the time, then I'd go laptop/interface route. Although the Zoom can act like an interface as well (I'm assuming).
@@TeftyMeems Yeah, the Zoom can be an audio interface but not a control surface, from what I've gleaned. I think I'm in the "want a recording set up in a different part of my studio" category. My jam space is in my basement but my production PC (also my day job machine) is in my home office where I do all my in-the-box work and simple recording, but I can't turn into a full-blown studio. I'm leaning toward getting a Model 12 because it's small enough I can record to it in the basement, where I can have all my gear (especially synths) set up all the time, and either just bring up the SD card or the whole thing to act as a control surface when I'm mixing and doing heavier production; that workflow sounds appealing to me by forcing me to not overly focus on production details in the DAW when I'm getting recordings down.
If you were going to chose a small mixer (8-16 channels) for mostly live work (duo or 4 piece acoustic groups), do you have a suggestion? I hope to get the best preamps. Good effects, 2 usable aux sends and reliability are also features I'd want.
First of all, thanks again for sharing ur experiences and knowledge, you're truly awesome! I got a question.. How can I record the changes I did on the tascam EQ or FX during the record of the tracks? When I hit playback, the changes I've made won't be appearing.. I try to not using a computer or software to complete my songs at all.. I've a mpc + tascam + various instruments setup.. But this last mixdown step, make me feel stuck in a way.. Could u pls explain me how I can get this songs finished without the need of a computer? The stereo mix export file doesn't contain the automation changes I've made on the tascam during recording the tracks.. With best regards :)
I’ve been back n forth between this and the Zoom L12, with Presonus Studio One. I understand Studio One didn’t recognize the Model 12? Has that been updated?
Hey, is there a way to leave my microphone plugged into Channel One and then route it to a second vocal Channel because I keep having to replug it every time and I hate that
I’m looking at the model 12 for live rehearsal and band recording, despite my studio setup which is UA Apollo x4 and UA plugins (channel strips, compressors, eq, reverbs, delays, auto-tune, etc.). I have a MOTU 8 pre connected via ADAT giving me 12 inputs in total. I can use the Apollo x4 + 8 Pre for live, but in all cases I’m relying on my M1 MacBook, UA Console and Logic. I’ve used this for live rehearsals and band recording in my studio, but it’s not really a mobile solution. So, I’m struggling with “what do I get with the Model 12?”
Good evening, so which mixer would you suggest for someone who owns an MpcX is not DAW friendly but would like to record tracks with the supplied effects on the mixer?
Hello sir I am extremely new to this. Last one I had and still have the Porta 4 cassette. I want get back into. I'm desperately trying to decide between the model 12 or 32. Midi may or may not be important to me. Like u suggested I found midi dp24 and was ready to pull the trigger on, but thinking that only 8 simultaneous recording and I just don't think will work. Also tacam will not support version 1 anymore. I do want to get into Floyd style old school synths but with 1/4 I can record w/o issue. And it appears that the 12 midi is pretty limited. Tho, midi could be helpful for backing tracks live. Thoughts? I like the 12 but after stereo there is no tracks left. And if the midi is not needed then will go more simultaneous.
How is this as a general use audio interface? My Soundcraft MTK 12 did what I needed it to do (get all my synths into the DAW and also let me jam a bit when the DAW is closed) but was damaged in a move. Wondering if this would be a good replacement.
I’m debating between the 12 and the 16 and given what you’ve said, I’m leaning towards the 16. It’s only $100 more and seems like a good investment. Is the 16 just a 12 with more channels or are there other major differences?
I spoke too soon in my post from a day ago... The thing is turning out to not really be what I had expected. No cut/copy/paste move.... no native tracks bouncing(???)… and I just ruined a guitar track (on channel 1) because I inadvertently created a "mix" onto it - even though I had NOTHING set to be sent to channel 1. I was trying to create a mix from 7/8 and 9/10... and then swap THAT "mix" from - what I thought was 11/12 - to channel 9/10. WTH?
Great review. Have you had any of the issues with pops and clicks on recording into the MPC when using the Model 12 as the MPC’s audio interface? There’s been a lot of chatter in the MPC community about these issues with certain audio interfaces.
I have that issue when it clips. I'll keep a limiter on the master but hear clipping when the metronome is on or when previewing samples as they are bypassing my limiter
Personally I have not had those issues, but I do watch the levels like a hawk and as soon as it's going into the red on the MPC I notice it immediately. Clicks and pops from an audio interface POV is usually a buffer/frequency problem. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some bugs lurking. I do wish Akai was faster at fixing issues 😞
Very helpful. I have been considering a small mixer for my setup and have gone througha few. I am using now a compact keyboard mixer, the Radial Keylargo which sounds good but I can not record the individual inputs. It would be nice to capture individual stems for mixing later. The question for me is whether with the gigs I am doing I want to put the trouble to capture each channel or simply record the stereo mix on a Zoom H6 which I do now. I love your content and channel. Peace.
Hi John! I'd say it comes down to your needs. Do you find yourself wishing you had the multitrack to mix later? If not, then you're better off just capturing the performance from your H6. If you perform a lot, then mixing all those performances afterwards could get time consuming as well. But like said, all depends on your needs. Thanks for watching 🙏
So, let's say you have about... 12 synths, some with R/L audio outs... some mono... 3 drum machines... and a set of Roland eDrums... what's a good mixer for a setup with that many hardware devices?
14:15 So I can hook up an MPC live2 to a M24 to mix channels from the MPC same as in the M12? With the difference being M24 doesn't control a DAW? I'm thinking of getting the M24 as I run out of channels with M12.
@@TeftyMeems What!! I couldn't believe it, but I think I see standard Eurorack cables coming right out of the Quad VCA and into the back of the mixer with a quarter inch adapter!

@@TheLordcasio Sounds like something i might use later, yet right now,all my gear is in one place..thank you.
Mixer will go good in my children self own & operated studio ...let's win
Only the Model 12 has MIDI I/O. I wish the Model 16 and Model 24 had the MIDI feature. Who knows WHY they didn't include MIDI on those.
I was looking at this mixer! Absolutely perfect video!!!
Very useful and practical overview. Great advice!
They updated firmware to now let you play usb on 1/2 (default) or now can pick channel 9/10 (single fader) or directly to the master channel- freeing up 1&2 👍
So appreciated your take on this!
Awesome! I got a digitakt / ableton / synth / modular kind of setup (starting to grow) and my soundcard quickly started getting limited (in multiple senses). Seems like a mixer like that, maybe even the model 16, would be ideal. Great review, thank you!
The Yamaha AW4416 was the greatest portastudio ever made, by a long way. I still haven't seen anyone make a better machine in the last 20 years.
10:45 didnt an update fix this issue letting you use 9/10 with computer?
Great videos and hit the nail on the head for the downsides. I also wish the individual track recording was post fader and panning. The daw control is ok. Used it for a while but am now going back to using my midi fighter twister for midi control
I use an Alto live 1202 and a MPC one and I record in a Roland R07. I like your videos, I learn a lot. Thanks.
Thank you! And thanks for sharing your setup 🍻
Excellent video. I love the shirt. Bass fishing and music. My two favorite things.
Great video dude. This is primarily how I'd like to use this unit so I found all of this SUPER helpful. Thank you!!
I have the same setup and love it....the Tascam does sound very good ...Keep on making music and thank you for the video.
Thank you Greg!
Thanks for the re-review.
Good review/discussion about this device.
❤🙏❤
Thanks for this video, I'm actually looking to buy this tascam model 12 for my akai force, it seems that it's a nice mixer and quite alone to work with the Akai devices.
great review. I'm still on the fence but I might be a little closer getting this board.
How is like soundcard?.....does have ASIO driver for VST Instruments?
Thanks for the review. Particularly interested in the tascam for multitracking my modular system and really glad you use it for this and have had that experienc. Is it ok level wise to go straight from Eurorack oscillators and FX then into the 12?
I'm guessing the best workflow is using it as an audio interface into the daw to multi track record. Any tips, suggestions would be amazing before I dropped the money on the 12.
Thanks!
HEY Great video, You mentioned connecting to Ipad. Have you tried it with AUM ? Does it work well in that environment ?
Nice review. Thanks for the indepth view.
Thank you!
Thanks, it's a lot just wanted whatever guidance you had.
does this have a similar feature to the zoom L-12 where there are USB audio returns tracks coming from the PC back into the mixer?
Great video. No more FK DAW. Thank goodness.
Thanks 👍👍👍
Clear and good job
Des explications en situations par un vrai musicien qui utilise le truc 👍👍👍
thank you for your detailed review. i'm a little confused, can we assign plugin parameters in a daw to knobs in tascam just like in a standard midi controller. i was planning to use it like a dj mixer, but if we can't assign for example a dj eq tool in a daw to the knobs in tascam, it is pretty useless to me. thanks in advance for your support.
Thank you!
@Carl Weingarten• I'm thinking about gettin the Tascam model 24 or 16 for the individual recording tracks for band rehearsals and live jam sessions.
Interesting, so you're just using it as a DAW controller now? I mainly stayed away from it as a DAW controller because the lack of motorized faders.
Good honest review
I just started using mine for the first time this past weekend... I love it. Took me some trial and error before I figured out all the little button and sliders, and how they all work in unison. I used to use an old drive-based Tascam DP-01. I am realizing, however, that since it's an SD card, I can't cut/copy-paste sections of my tracks like I could on the DP-01. Anyone have any info on that? I don't see anything about cutting/copying-pasting data within tracks in the user manual. :(
I had been using GarageBand to mix my DP-01 tracks.
When the 2.1 came out I remember reading the MPC main outputs were disabled when an external audio interface is connected.
Thanks!
Unfortunately that’s not possible. I’m using a MPC Live and recently got a Model 12 and realized that if you connect another interface to the MPC it takes over all the “sound duties” from the it.
It would be great if that was something they could add in future updates.
HAD TO drop a like and subscribe just for the shirt. Love the videos too
Will it work with the Mac M1 chip ?
I have an 18i20, but I kind of want a mixer with eq, and compression built in, as well as tactile faders, I'm getting sick of mousing in daw. Do you use this mixer with another audio interface, or do you use this as its own interface?
Very informative video. Is the audio interface decent?
Great video. What stand do you have it on in the intro?
Can we import seperated file into per-channel?
I've been experiencing some wonkiness with swapping tracks. I might try to swap track 1 with track 6 but when I listen back, it either didn't swap or another track got involved somehow. Also, if you want to mixdown 4 tracks to a stereo frack, all the tracks that have recording on them will automatically be included in the mixdown. Even if you bring the faders down, it doesn't matter. I've had the Model 12 for a year and I still do not fully understand it.
@John Aiello• wow...that is very important to know, thanks for the info.
On the cover image for this video, you have a nice angled stand for the Tascam Model 12 Mixer, yet that stand only appears in the very beginning of this video.
Please tell me, where can we buy that stand?
I've had my 12 for about a year and just wanted a recorder mostly and after a few confusing things it's been great. The learning curve was mostly me.
Does maschine+ have the feature of connecting an audio interface to add more inputs like the MPC does?
Super helpful, thank you man
Thanks for watching 🙏
Can one save presets/scenes for the tracks? Can you recall the tracks settings for eq, fx, faders when you load a song? Or do you need to adjust the levels for each song manually when performing live?
Was goin to get the allen and heath xone px5 for my studio/jam mixer...it seemed perfect....only thing is that its not available anywhere...and No one knows when it will be...and also it increased in price 300€...so 1500€ atm....now feveresly looking for something else....this and the roland mx1 are looking like OPTIONS...but both feel like a substitute for what I really want/need...just releasing some fumes here 😂
Yr lighting game is ON POINT
Hi, thanks, great video! Will the model 12 work as an audio interfase with maschine plus? Thanks!
Does this mixer saves the scenes like a regular digital mixer does??
That would be awesome!!
Good effects, 2 usable aux sends and reliability are also features I'd want.
get the model 16 then, jeez
With best regards
:)
Hello sir
I am extremely new to this.
Great review. I can now think about adding this to my setup.
Oh, look at that! Best like/subscribe ask ever!
its cool but crashed one too many times for me and not worth it for the price for only 12 tracks
very followable, well done, Tony New Zealand
I’m debating between the 12 and the 16 and given what you’ve said, I’m leaning towards the 16. It’s only $100 more and seems like a good investment. Is the 16 just a 12 with more channels or are there other major differences?
No MIDI on the 16, and I'm pretty sure you can't use it as a DAW controller either
Have you had those issues as well?
I have that issue when it clips. I'll keep a limiter on the master but hear clipping when the metronome is on or when previewing samples as they are bypassing my limiter
Personally I have not had those issues, but I do watch the levels like a hawk and as soon as it's going into the red on the MPC I notice it immediately. Clicks and pops from an audio interface POV is usually a buffer/frequency problem. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some bugs lurking. I do wish Akai was faster at fixing issues 😞
Hi thank you for this overview. Can you use outboard mic preamps and bypass the internal tascam pre's?
YoTefty, how do you record with the analog heat and mpc combo? 🙏🏽
I’m curious can you plug eurorack level audio directly into the Model 12 inputs or do you need additional attenuation to line levels first?
Yup, plugs directly in, no attenuator needed 👍
@@TeftyMeems What!! I couldn't believe it, but I think I see standard Eurorack cables coming right out of the Quad VCA and into the back of the mixer with a quarter inch adapter!
Can you do me a huge favor? Will the tascam model 12 work for an audio interface for a neural dsp plugin? You can download a trial for free 😉
have you noticed any bleeding from channel to channel? I've read several comments of people experiencing bleeding,
Model 12 has midi in & Out .
Can you explain this ?
Is it maybe to work with DAW to controll PC as a sort of remote controller ?
Just clock for the midi equip ? IN case a producer has not its midi clock aready ( hahahaha ) ..
cheers & peace
FBD
Does it record the EQ when using it as a audio interface?
Can you use the inputs on the back on the mpc along with the mixer to add an extra stereo synth?
Would you recommend this for a bluegrass band using just a couple condensors live as part of live sound and capturing for gig review?
Hi Joe, that sounds like a perfect use for this mixer 👍
No physical midi connectors on 16 or 24 but there is on 12?
question. would general compute audio come through channels 1 & 2. without having to change that
// IS THIS MIXER RELIABLE AND STRONG ENOUGHT FOR LIVE GIGS ???? GREETINGS FROM PERU //// DOES IT HAVE PHANTON POWER ???
Can you set up 5 stereo synths then right?
