Had mine about 2 months.. my first proper mixer. I love it.. no more recabling into a small interface , and it works just as well with or without my computer.. I love that you can start things off without a computer, and then finish off and mixdown linked if you want. I also love that you can switch between computer or live monitoring per track... @@Formelyknownasnone I meant no more latency! As it's really easy to switch to live monitoring on let track basis which I couldn't do on previous interfaces I've had
i have been a musician for 10 years and a producer for 2! I have learnt everything from youtube but I swear I have never come across a more interesting channel!!!!
Recording hint, when you are ever playing like to pratice you should always let it record. Many popular 70s bands did that and ended up with their best track being the pratice track. Some recording software like cakewalk or logic allow you to record multiple tracks on the same strip . Then before mixing pick the best sounding one, delete the rest.
Nice to see the unit being used as a sketchpad - mine should be with me in two or three days. Tascam really seems to have hit a sweet spot with this machine, as it has MIDI sync, which no one else seems to do now. Also, the ability to merge it with the DAW, record onto the machine and DAW at the same time is genius. So many great features for the money; mixer surface (basic, but hey!), sockets at the back (thank god), power-switch, descent metering, compressor (basic, but nice) and EQ, a built in effect to help provide 'glue' and an auxy send. It's all good... for sure another 300 bucks would have provided more of everything, but this price point is brilliant. I have a large studio, but will be using this for DAW-less jam sessions, with the ability to move stuff to the computer for sweetening if required. Good job on the video. Good job Tascam.
Awesome, Steve! Happy recording. Yeah, the inputs on the back was a big selling point for me in terms of the Model 12 vs the others, thanks for bringing that up! Great info here. Thanks for commenting and watching. I'm sure this info will help others decide in the future. Cheers!
Read the Manual. It says "When a MODE switch is set to “MTR”, the signal from the input jack on that channel will be recorded. This function is useful when recording and playing back repeatedly because the monitored sound is automatically switched according to the recording or playback status." What the means is leave it on MTR.
This is useful. I was thinking, why toggle between MTR and Line if you could just leave it on MTR? But I wasn't sure if it would still record while in that mode. Guess that's what I had to learn today! Thanks
I want that. I’m pretty anti computer, but I love that you have the choice to do anything with this model. And it looks sweet, like a real, albeit tiny, studio. My dreams of an entire portable suitcase recording studio would be all but done.
It’s basically a computer without a screen… being ‘anti-computer’ is a low resolution understanding. Your typing this on a pocket computer and you aren’t anti that
Yeah, that's a big reason these multitrackers are great. No screen, use your ears, tactile. Definitely recommend it if you're getting back into recording. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Wow, I’ve been following you ever since I had to look up tutorials for the 424. Now I bought this, looked up tutorials and there you are! Thanks a lot for these 🤘
just purchased my model 12 3 days ago, havent even turned it on been reading, wow what a manual ,then I found your videos and thank you so much for teaching, now I can start testing, I play classical guitars seen this on a website the model 12 and I was sold, i have so many questions ,but you have such great tutorials we that got this unit are so lucky to have you, I'm so excited, guiong tomorrow to buy monitors ,I like the ones you have, I see that there Yamaha just need the model # and I'm going on the hunt, also like your setup table, just what iv been searching for on Amazon ,so if you can get back to me where you got these 2 items I would be great full thank you again, and once I dig in I may support your channel for a while you have saved me so much time ,by not having to read for a month thanks again
Your product videos are on the mark! There are few other real world user videos. Your subconscious mind has you use the pencil because you’re teaching! Thank you!
Thanks for this! Question: why not just leave the tracks on MTR all throughout? It's how I've been using my Model 12 and I'm not sure what I'm missing out on by not using the Live setting.
Nothing, you're doing it right. Live let's you practice but not record on tht track while recording other tracks since it needs record armed to hear in MTR. Probably a pretty rare need tbh. But say for example you want to record a singer on track 1 while you play a keyboard on tracks 3/4 but for some reason you only want to hear the keyboard & not record it but you DO want the singer recorded. Then you'd need 3/4 switched to Live so you could hear the keys w/o needing to arm record since you're hitting record to grab the singer, lol. Hopefully that makes sense, haha. The only other benefit of using Live in your case would be because the blinking light annoys you when record is armed. So in home studio use your missing nothing (besides the undoubtedly rare example above.) Where Live would be more useful & likely got it's name is in a "Live" setting where you'd want everything in a band heard on all the tracks/channels during a show but the sound man probably doesn't want to arm the record button on every track. So if it's for a band/live artist using it as mainly as a mixer more so than a recorder. Even if a band wanted to get rowdy & record said live performance they'd just arm record & leave it in Live & wahh-lahh. Rmbr the Model 12 is 3 things Mixer, Recorder, & USB DAW Interface Controller. Therefore, you will have buttons, features, & settings that aren't really relevant to the mode you choose to use it for. If that's TL/DR than I'm saying you're good, have fun, & what you're doing is working fine. No need to learn how to fix a method you got that ain't broke.
I’ve had this thing bookmarked for a couple months now (on zzounds), if I ever decide the spend any more money it’ll be on the Model 12 (using your affiliate link of course). There doesn’t seem to be anything anywhere near the price range that has as many features. Plus, I seem to be exclusively TEAC/Tascam these days. Awesome to see a full review of it. Again, 424THEWIN!!!
What? That's wild! I agree. I'm impressed with the Model 12. It has many uses. It definitely solves a lot of routing issues I've ran into in my setup as well. Well, I hope this video helps inform your decision if you ever choose to get it. Let me know if you have any questions, Godof! Cheers!
Thanks so much for this video. I found it very informative and useful and very basic and easy to follow. I am 85 to 95% convinced I'm going to buy this recorder for live or even production. It seems fairly simple to use and yet has multiple functions in which I like and the price is also right too. I get sick ofLittle for tracks and then on a big ass studio mixing console to have to pay a guy couple hundred just to mix some tracks for me or using audio software which I don't like doing either this tool is right in the middle so thanks again
Perfect timing for this, I'm trying to decide between the 12 and 16. The 16 is an analog mixer but I can't decide if I really really care for the extra size and expense.
Awesome, M P! The big thing for me was the size of the 12 and also the position of the inputs. I like that the 12 has the inputs on the back. It works better for my setup. If you do decide, consider grabbing it through the affiliate link if it makes sense for you! Cheers!
Hi thanks for the tutorial. . i like to ask . you first said you like to record with the bass trebble mid in the center. and add them in the mix down. . but while you was recoding you tweaked. the bass and the guitar / i dont understand if you tweak before you put the track down or as your doing tweak before the mix . /
Why not using digitakt as midi slave to the mixer that has midi out with sync so you start of the recording will concide with the start of the pattern from the digitakt?
Thanks for this, much appreciated.Nice to see a step by step video.I got my model 12 yesterday. It’s early days for this unit,so few videos available . Just read a lot of the comments ,as I am looking into how the model 12 can synchronise with other hardware.Specifically DAWs[I use Ableton Live 10] and other multi tracks.(eg I ve got an old Roland cd2000).From the manual it’s seems you can only configure in your system with Model 12 being set as a Midi Clock master, meaning that connected devices like DAws need to have synchronisation set through external mode configuration.Interestingly it seems thar the Model 12 can be set to be the DAW audio interface, with a virtual midi connection for the Synchronization. Overall I think the model 12 is an inspirational piece of kit.Hopefully it can support some of these hybrid modes.
Thanks, Leafsmith. You're going to have a blast. I need to look more into the MIDI functionality. My main desire for getting the unit was the multitrack functionality and everything else is a bonus to me. It seems like a lot of people are excited about the MIDI functionality; I want to hook up some of my gear and make a song that way soon. I'm very much a novice at that sort of stuff so it should be a great learning experience. It seems like you can also connect the Model 12 as a DAW controller and also like you said an interface. I agree, it's super inspirational and solves a lot of connectivity issues for me. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Hey! hows going? i have a question that i didnt get very well...can you loop and record your instruments?, like those boss loopers? and make a quick live or something?
I mean you could loop them on this, but a dedicated looper would probably be easier from a functionality standpoint. Those units are built to be loopers, this is more of a multitrack recorder/DAW interface/DAW controller
Thank you so much. Everyone that has these tutes seems to be dropping in pre-recorded tracks from a PC.I'm old school and like to record/play live, track by track. One question---where do you plug in the headphones? Thanks again!
Im heavily considering one of these lately! I mainly use a 414mkii, and a half-broken Yamaha MT8x in tandem with my 80s Tascam M208 mixer. I’ve been considering what I should do, like perhaps sell my Yamaha and invest in a nicer interface, but Im loving the portability and flexibility of these things. I could still record on tape and then bounce it to the Model 12 for further mixing / tracking and better yet, I can take it to rehearsals and sessions, just like my 414! I’ve been comparing this and the Zoom multitrack recorders, but I like how this has on board EQ and effects returns. I look forward to the day where I no longer have to lug my desktop to and from my studio
@@424Recording Its a blast! I'm not use to having open tracks, my instinct is still stuck on only using 4 tracks. Got a Yamaha CP last fall (its a mini keyboard), I'm sure I'll start using those extra tracks for this.
I'm very back and forth on getting one of these or a full blown porta studio. I love the idea of recording to tape, but I dont know if I'm just romanticizing it. My fear is that the model 12 will just be too clean since it's digital. What are your thoughts? If you could only get one, but wanted to make some dirty DIY sounding tracks, what would you suggest?
Hello, awesome video. How did you get the tracks to come in separately to the unit? When using my MPC One. All of the tracks come together to one channel. Your video is exactly what I've been trying to accomplish!
Thanks for watching! Idk how the routing is on the MPC one but the Digitakt has stereo out. You can also mix the individual samples hard right and hard left on the Digitakt. I then recorded the right and left out of the Digitakt to separate tracks
@@romantin81 Can you pan on the MPC? I panned the snare/kick hard left and hihat hard right on the Digitakt which isolated the sounds from each other. Then I recorded the Digitakt left channel to track 1 and the Digitakt right channel to track 2
Question...just bought the Model 12 and learning. If I use my Behringer mic pre for a condenser mic, do I need to turn on Phantom power on mic pre and the model 12 or one or the other ? Thanks
so what do you connect the tascam to? to a computer? if so what program? how can i use this by itself or do i need it connected to a computer? what cable do i need for a newer usb port on a newer mac?
I am buying one in the next couple of weeks and I'm trying to choose the best software to use with it. Any suggestions? I'm also a PC guy, not a Mac user! Thanks for any suggestions!
I know a lot of PC users like Reaper. I believe this will work as a control surface in that software. Pro Tools is also very popular. If you want to grab a Model 12 through my site, that would help out a lot! If not, no worries. Happy recording and I hope this information is helpful! 424recording.com/tascam-model-12
Interesting...I've been looking at this series (12, 16, 24) mainly because I do so much live recording and it would be easier to work than the DP32 would be and I could export the tracks to my DP32 for final mastering. Thanks for bringing this up! I'm so jealous of you having it now! :)
Great tutorial. Had two questions: you can do both the multitracking on this as well as mastering to a stereo track, with the option to use effects (onboard or otherwise) at any stage? Second, say you wanted to loop something and record that, could you do it straight on the machine or would you have to connect an external looper and use it as an effect (if that's even possible)?
You can mix down to single stereo file to the SD Card & put that on a computer, phone, etc on the Model series. It plays like any other song you download. It however has no mastering fx like the Tascam DP-32SD & DP-24SD. It's a marginal difference imo. On the Model 12, 16, etc you end up w/ a fully mixed stereo file on SD card & on the DP series you end up with a fully mixed stereo file on an SD card that has some Tascam mastering fx slapped on top of that. While It'd be cool if the Model series gave you some fx to polish the stereo mixdown they wouldn't be pro-level anyway. You may even be better off without it & mastering the untouched mix elsewhere tbh. Tascam prob knows that & that's likely the logic. The Model series is meant to be more pro-level than the DP series. The lowest Model series starts in price where the highest DP series ends. As for looping there is something called Vamp now in the settings that let's you practice by looping. Tascam added it in a firmware update. It's likely not what you want but I obviously don't know you. I'd watch a video on it. Just search "Tascam Model Vamp." It basically loops a section of the recorded tracks endlessly (to my basic understanding anyway) allowing you to practice or free style play on top of the loop. I don't think it would be serviceable to replace a looper if you want to play a riff, loop it, & record the loop to a track while recording something else on another track. I have many other tools to loop w/ so I've not cared to explore it. Hope that helps man & there is a YT vid I watched on the Vamp feature so check it out.
@@424Recording Nice. Model 12 And model 24 are in my wish list but must be something wrong with their compressors because people never show them in action in their reviews. I would love to hear them in vocals and drums
very helpful to see hw you record a track with the Model 12. I've been using an rc-505 for recording, but the new vamp feature looks like a great addition. good tip about splitting the kick and snare into left and right audio channels.
Thanks for watching! That's cool, re: 505. I used to have a RC-3 I think it was? It's like the pedal one. Yeah! Vamp is great for practicing. I think it's cool that Tascam is also adding more features and updating the firmware. Thanks. I wish the Digitakt had individual outs but this is a good solution for isolating different parts of the mix. Cheers and happy recording!
@@nebula0697 no, but that’s an interesting thing to try. I guess you mean using the RC-505 as an effects unit and routing the wet signal back into the model 12? I was using the model 12 to shape the instrument sounds via its inputs, analogue preamps, some mild eq and a little reverb. Main output 1 and 2 went to the looper if I remember correctly.
Really thinking of getting one but the1010Bluebox looks interesting as well - smaller, more inputs but operated from touch screen so still can't decide.I'm a hobby synth/drum/groove box bloke and looking to have some fun with them.Tascam, although larger looks more immediate in terms of control and around the same price as the Bluebox.Any thoughts out there ?
Is it possible to record effects like delay on a vocal? I have an external effects loop set up on Aux 1 but it doesn't record. I think I'll try an insert. Probably the only way I'll be able to record with the vocal affect audible on playback. Any other thoughts as to how I can route this?
hello I can heaer through the speajerrs and use the faders but the metters lighing green on the main dont show movement. I am confused none of the tutorials i follow this tascam behaves as so! I cant even controll it as a daw surface because it doesnt even work.
hello I just got a tascam model 12 mixer. I mainly using it for live karaoke. My problem with this is the mic level isn't loud enough even with the help of mic preamp and adjusting the gain level. Can I get some pointers if you have some free time thank you.
You mentioned not having to use the "instrument" button because you're running through a preamp. Would this mean that if you have an active bass (9v preamp) you would not need to press that button? Would using that button with a preamp just make it way loud or would it cause damage?
Hi just seen your excellent demo on recording with Tascam, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place right now, deciding on which mixer to go with mainly used for live performances but also dabble with home recording, I gave the presonus Ar16c waiting to either be opened up or sent back, hearing bad reviews on this board, Then I see the Zoom Live trak L20, don't like the idea of the power supply set up, but it has 2 effects engines, Tascam I have to admit after watching your video now is top of my list, but this only has one effect engine to work with, I always liked the idea of 2 effects to mix with like on my Dynacord Cms 1000 desk, But if I knew that what you get with tascam effects are excellent then Tascam Model 24 will replace this Presonus ar16c live studio, which as u said is not even opened the parcel yet, Would love to read what you and your band thought of Tascam, 🤔 thanks in advance
Hi Jacobo, I believe they are always on. As you turn the knob up, the green light will start to flicker, indicating that the signal is starting to get compressed
Hey man! If you take the SD card out and put it in the computer is there a way to print the effects of the mixer on the tracks? Or does it just put them on the computer as dry signal? As in, would the only way to print the effects of the mixer be to do a stereo bounce on the machine to tracks 11 and 12? I really want to use it as a recorder but make use of the EQ then mix on the computer while maintaining the eq balances/ effects
There's a couple settings for the faders. One is "Post EQ" which is the one I have mine set to. It maintains the sound of the channel settings. I think you have to mix down for the effects though
Great tutorial! Two questions though.. 1) how does (direct) monitoring work while recording 4 or more tracks simultaneously for each musician? And can I use plugins while recording? So for instance if I wanted to use a guitar amp plugin like Amplitube to record my guitar, or put a delay or reverb plugin on my vocals while recording? 2) If the mixer needs 2 channels for Logic, then that is my master in Logic? So I'd be losing 2 channels and have 8 actual channels left, correct? Thanks!
We just purchased a model 12. We have six tracks of drums and one track of bass guitar so far. We can't figure out how to make a stereo mix. Someone said we need a cubase-10 to mix and master. Digital is new to us. We thought we could do it all in the model 12. Thank you
I notice comment below about the EQ is post recording... Is that how the 424 is?... or is it true that the eq gets recorded, and then you get to use the EQ AGAIN when playing back?
Hi, Istvan. Unfortunately, I have never used the Zoom so I would not be able to give a fair assessment. My understanding is that these two units do have almost the same feature set, so I think your decision may come down to brand loyalty (which brand you like better). Good luck and happy recording
I went with the Model 12 over the Zoom because it has MIDI for syncing my external synths for live jamming. I also like the dedicated buttons for each channel, main EQ section (great for live performance), compressor on each channel, a sub out, and I love teh 2 headphone outs. The Zoom seems more for podcasters in my opinion or if you don't need MIDI. I used to have a Zoom R16. It was fantastic and so easy to work with but I sold it because it didn't have MIDI.
I'm not sure how you would go about that. I have my PC main out going into channel 7/8 which you could do but the Model 12 is not hooked up to the PC via USB
I am considering getting one for live playing. I perform with backing tracks that I have on a laptop. I am sure I could load my tracks onto the tascam. But how easy is it to navigate from song to song?
Honestly, Idk how involved your tracks are, but I used to bounce backing tracks down to a WAV and play them off of an iPhone. Just make sure you put it on airplane mode! But to answer your question, it would be a couple of clicks and turns of the multi jog knob... cheers!
I use currently use winamp on my laptop. (The greatest music player of all time) I have used a phone. But winamp allows auto stop at the end of each tune. I have not found another player that does that.
Oh cool! Yeah I used to to use a playlist and just leave extra space where I wanted to talk and take a break. I used to have the banter or anything I needed to say pre-rehearsed though. That sounds like a good feature, re: Winamp. You could probably make a separate playlist for each track in the iPhone app but then you would need to switch between them for each song
Hi, Dylan, do you mean when used with the computer? It's awesome! It's great for so many uses. It solves a lot of routing issues I used to run into, you can use it like any other interface, you can use it like a DAW controller (something I've never done and need to explore more). I'm going to use if for live streaming at some point and podcasting as well (if I get the podcast going again). Cheers! If you're going to grab one and want to help out the channel, check out the link in the description to my website 😎
Might be the gain staging. I have my monitors set for +4 db and most of the time, the lights on the meter aren't lighting up all the way. Maybe try setting the main fader at 0; just be careful raising faders of channels. It might get loud
Hey Mike, curious about something with the Model 12. While using this in daw mode with my daw, can I send out a vst sound through 2 outputs of the Model 12, and have them (go thru fx pedal) and come back into 2 inputs on the Model 12? I could do this on my previous interface, but having trouble figuring it out on this
iv narrowed it down to model twelve or zoom l12 . is there any capabilities with internet and phone performance and can it be connected to a camera. sounds great man love digitakt
Thanks, strange sevin7! Digitakt ftw! Hmmm I don't know if there is any Internet connectivity but one thing there is on the Model 12 is bluetooth. So if you were using this for a podcast or you wanted to record something from a video or something, you can hook up audio and devices through bluetooth. This would be useful for guests on a podcast for instance. Idk if this can hook up to a camera wirelessly but you could hardwire it using the main outs into a camera's preamp. Thanks for watching!
@@424Recording im wondering whats better l12 zoom or tascam seems like this has way more inputs they both look great. Do you know pros and cons between the two
I've never used the Zoom. They both look to be about the same thing with a very similar offering and the same price point and look to be aimed at the same demographic. The Zoom is more compact than the Model 12. My only advice would be to try both of them and keep the one that you like better. Or flip a coin!
I hear ya. I know a lot of the retailers have lenient return policies so as long as you test it out and return it within so many days you'll get a refund (I'm actually an affiliate with zZounds and they have a 45 day return policy, I believe. Check out my website if you want to help out the channel with your purchase: 424recording.com ). I was also thinking a lot of this choice comes down to brand loyalty. It's like car companies and how they all make like the same exact cars but they're styled a little differently and one is called the Nissan Small Car, another is a Toyota Little Car, and another is the Ford Mini Car. They're around the same price point and the decision comes down to which brand you like best
Does it handle tempo changes from a 'Song Mode' on a Drum Machine ? So I can alter certain drum patterns to have slow downs and speed ups at different points in the song ? And record at any point in the song on the Model 12 ? Thanks
Question? .how hot is it recording to the SD card. You say “recording about at 12” ... is that -12 ? , though your buss is reading about 0db. When getting a solid input level ( not distorting) on a given channel - ive recently noticed that that little digital display is reading quite hot perhaps hitting digital 0 😲. Is there a calibration setting, so that the channel inputs aren’t actually hitting digital 0db ? I think some recordings on it have that sound 😣
That's a great question and I can't say for sure. There's a line on the screen that you want to aim for when recording. I've had varying results on volume depending on what I've been working on; it depends how many tracks are on the final mix and what those sum to. I haven't had any digital distortion problems
Update, I just bought a Teac 3 and am going to set up my gear as follows: mic into channel 1 on the Teac, monitor outs from Teac into my Warm 73 pre amp EQ, to ART Compressor, to my Tascam 12. Tascam 12 AUX out to cassette in, cassette out to channel 3 of the Tascam 12. This way it's being used to record playback from the DAW which would already be holding analog recorded sounds from all of my outboard gear.
Do you need an SD card inserted to get a sound out of it? I have Model 16 just new but no card yet ,plugged my bass in but cannot hear any sound thru headphones and dont kow why
I believe it will work without the SD card. The main issue is that the headphone routing is not intuitive. I've been meaning to make a video on this. I was just watching this video the other day from Tascam. It explains the headphone routing: th-cam.com/video/jrZsBmH5Igk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video , i bought my model 12 afyer watching your video. I am more of a protools user for the past 6 years but this model 12 really got my attention, it is a great lil machine I used to own the 2488 tascam but this one is way better, thanks for your videos i ll be asking you a few qiestions later on if you dont mind. Thanks great video😁👍
Glad I could help! Oh, yeah the 2488 neo? Those are cool. I used one many years ago. I think this one is more straightforward and has a lot more functions! Sure! Hit me up. I'm planning to make more videos on this in the future, too, so let me know if there's anything that is unclear and I'll try to incorporate it into a video! Cheers and happy recording!
Does it record the Aux send/returns too? If I connect analog guitar pedals? And can these be inserted in the 1&2 jack inputs where it says "inserts) or how does it's send return work?
Hello how are you doing I just buy tascam model 12 ,the problem is that I’m always record it using irig2 with this one I can’t make it works if you know can you please help me out where I can coneted or make it work.
Instead of constantly switching between Live and MTR modes you could just leave all tracks in MTR and press the Rec button above the faders to hear live signal from that input
Oh btw, could you record a quick video explaining levels of audio signal? I honestly can’t wrap my head around it. Should I set my instruments to be as loud as possible and then control the volume in the mixer? What are the optimal levels for recording and how to tell it’s not too loud or quiet when you can control master volume and also volume on headphones, monitors etc. I realize this is a noob topic but I’d love to hear about best practices
Can you record the input when in MTR mode though, re: switching between Live and MTR? Yeah, I ran into some gain staging issues when I was doing this as well. The unit uses that guideline on the live input screen for the designated level. The thing that confuses me about the unit is the main output meter; it goes way above 0 to 15 and then OL (overload I'm assuming). Also, this unit gets LOUD. I can barely turn it up when I'm listening back. In general, it's usually best to have the loudest signal needed coming into the inputs to get close to that -12 guideline and using the gain knob to bump it up if needed. In the next video, I probably should have used a preamp for my vocals. The fader is more of the volume control. Play a signal thru one of the inputs and watch the live input screen. Keep the fader down. You'll still see the level coming thru just as hot but you won't hear it. Hope that makes sense!
Hey man, just got a Rack Mounted Tascam 130 Cassette Deck that I'm going to record to. It loaded with goodies for quality recording so I can't wait to fire it up. Just waiting on the cables. Anyways just to clarify, if I'm recording from my DAW I'll run channels 1 and 2 out to the deck and from the deck out to open channels on the mixer to return. Does that sound right? Thanks any help would be appreciated.
Well, the Digitakt does not have individual outs. If you had a drum machine with individual outs for each sound then yes. There may also be a way to do this with Midi but I haven't gotten there yet. Cheers!
Ohhh that's cool, though. I haven't messed with Overbridge. Idk if I have an interface with that many outs but yeah I agree, might defeat the purpose unless you want to work DAWless with the sounds
I'm not a total noob, but have been out of it for a while. When I'm recording drums, all my levels are very strong and not clipping. Playback on the Tascam sounds great. But when I take the card out and import the files to Audacity on my PC, they're all really weak. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Hey, Joel. First and foremost it's an analog mixer so anywhere you'd want to use that in the portastudio workflow, the Model 12 would come in handy
I have one and I simply love it
i have been a musician for 10 years and a producer for 2! I have learnt everything from youtube but I swear I have never come across a more interesting channel!!!!
Wow, thanks, Utkarsh. Thanks for watching!
Recording hint, when you are ever playing like to pratice you should always let it record. Many popular 70s bands did that and ended up with their best track being the pratice track. Some recording software like cakewalk or logic allow you to record multiple tracks on the same strip . Then before mixing pick the best sounding one, delete the rest.
best stuff happens when the rec is off😅
What is a strip? I am a noob 😅
@@itsJoel59 a channel
@@itsJoel59 - It could have also been said to record your practice into a different virtual take/track of the same channel.
Cheers!
Such a comprehensive and well taught video. Thanks for this man, im feeling inspired!
Read the Manual. It says "When a MODE switch is set to “MTR”, the signal from the input jack on that channel will be recorded.
This function is useful when recording and playing back repeatedly because the monitored sound is automatically switched according to the recording or playback status."
What the means is leave it on MTR.
My dreams of an entire portable suitcase recording studio would be all but done.
amen!!! I'VE HAD THE SAME DREAM FOR YEARS!!!
It’s basically a computer without a screen… being ‘anti-computer’ is a low resolution understanding. Your typing this on a pocket computer and you aren’t anti that
I would love one of these; I am on the computer all day; so it would be great to do music like the old days!

Thanks, dude! There's also more mixing and adding effects coming up. Stay tuned, bro!
Thanks for the Model 12 tutorial. I look forward to implementing these recording & mixing tips!
I just bought a model 24 today, your vids will for sure come in handy ;)..awesome job and thanks!
Glad I could help! Enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions but I'm still learning myself!
Yes! It helped me as well! Clear and easy to understand!
Cheers!
The 16 has 2 more inputs, everything being top accessed makes it useful for mobile recording
Anch'io devo decidere tra 12 e 16 . Tu cosa mi consigli ? Grazie

For the pedals, do you have your guitar plugged into them and then the out from pedals to your input?
Getting soundcraft 22 today n wish some one did a thrurow totorial like this for em

Great video, like how its broken down into sections for easy access. Just got one of these too. look forward to the next video!
Thanks, bun! More to come for sure. How are you liking it? Did I ask you this already haha
@@424Recording Its a blast! I'm not use to having open tracks, my instinct is still stuck on only using 4 tracks. Got a Yamaha CP last fall (its a mini keyboard), I'm sure I'll start using those extra tracks for this.
Hahaha I know what you mean, re: open tracks. Do it up!
Other drum machines have auto swing to add crashes pattern change. If you’re using Apple it’s got a great drum setup on both logic and garage band
I loved the song!
Bought one of these after Daw diving. If you've used A 424 and/or Zoom multitrack, the Tascam model series will come very easily to you.
Master Section EQ nice, but the best feature is really the wave-recorder in 24 bit 48 khz. Now add a semi-parametric double mid eq plus q shelving.
I dont own a Digitakt but I think you can output separate channels to M12 via usb
I'm very back and forth on getting one of these or a full blown porta studio. I love the idea of recording to tape, but I dont know if I'm just romanticizing it. My fear is that the model 12 will just be too clean since it's digital. What are your thoughts? If you could only get one, but wanted to make some dirty DIY sounding tracks, what would you suggest?
throw away the manual and just watch this video. Thank you so much. I was totally stuck on the fact that you have to toggle from Live to MTR.
@@424Recording how did you record it to separate tracks? The MPC also has stereo outs. Everything comes over under one channel though.
Did u ever release this track ?? I like it
Interesting...I've been looking at this series (12, 16, 24) mainly because I do so much live recording and it would be easier to work than the DP32 would be and I could export the tracks to my DP32 for final mastering. Thanks for bringing this up! I'm so jealous of you having it now! :)
That's a great idea! Yeah, it seems like a great board for live sound and recording live sounds. It sounds like it would work in your workflow, Mike!
@@424Recording Yeah, just out of my reach at the moment price wise. I need to pay for more important things right now.
Makes sense, Mike
Are tracks recorded to the SD card dry when effects have been used to monitor?
I would like to hear the built in compressor. For sure it is better than distort the AD converters
I'll probably do a video on it. Yeah, I'm not sure what distorting the preamps sounds like. Might be worth some experimenting, though!
@@424Recording Nice. Model 12 And model 24 are in my wish list but must be something wrong with their compressors because people never show them in action in their reviews. I would love to hear them in vocals and drums
In the official Tascam video, they use the compressor for drums and guitar: th-cam.com/video/MlT5OIxEZXo/w-d-xo.html
Wow sweet little unit there!
Yeah! I'm loving it. It feels like a futuristic 424 haha
very helpful to see hw you record a track with the Model 12.
Are you using the looper as permanently connected effect to the Model 12 that you can send to any track as needed?
Good vid, more on the tascam 12, thanks
Many more to come. Thanks, samuel!
Phantom power for each pre amp ?
Is it possible to record effects like delay on a vocal? I have an external effects loop set up on Aux 1 but it doesn't record. I think I'll try an insert. Probably the only way I'll be able to record with the vocal affect audible on playback. Any other thoughts as to how I can route this?
Just got this. How do you playback the SD card into the headphone?
Excellent presentation. I like your style. Thinking I will go for this puppy.

hello I just got a tascam model 12 mixer.
Hi just seen your excellent demo on recording with Tascam, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place right now, deciding on which mixer to go with mainly used for live performances but also dabble with home recording,
I gave the presonus Ar16c waiting to either be opened up or sent back, hearing bad reviews on this board,
Then I see the Zoom Live trak L20, don't like the idea of the power supply set up, but it has 2 effects engines,
Tascam I have to admit after watching your video now is top of my list, but this only has one effect engine to work with, I always liked the idea of 2 effects to mix with like on my Dynacord Cms 1000 desk,
But if I knew that what you get with tascam effects are excellent then Tascam Model 24 will replace this Presonus ar16c live studio, which as u said is not even opened the parcel yet,
Would love to read what you and your band thought of Tascam, 🤔 thanks in advance

Is this mixer analog?
I love to get my hands on this Tascam model 12 recording to create my music. Looks like a cool model.
is it possible to make a "tempo map" with this machine? thanks
Hey! hows going? i got a question...i tweak the compressors and i dont get any signal, how i turn them on?
Hi Jacobo, I believe they are always on. As you turn the knob up, the green light will start to flicker, indicating that the signal is starting to get compressed
Appreciate advise how to get headphones audio from model 12. Thanks.
The best way I've found is to use a headphone amp and the sub output
Because of this generic phantom power button, is there a risk of damaging a dynamic mic if you use it at the same time with a condenser mic?
Greate video, u know how to demo and explain stuff.
Perfect for me..going to Zzounds and ordering one...
Awesome! Enjoy!
yeaaaa boi gettin that sponser money baby

Thank you

Hi Mr. 424, I had a TASCAM 424 back in the day.
Awesome!
Hi can you adjust the tempo on this unit thanks.
There's a metronome feature but I don't think you can speed up or slow down the song if that's what you mean. Cheers
I notice comment below about the EQ is post recording... Is that how the 424 is?... or is it true that the eq gets recorded, and then you get to use the EQ AGAIN when playing back?
Hello! Primarily in a home studio, used for recording which one you recommend to get. The Tascam Model 12 or the Zoom Livetrack 12?
Hi, Istvan. Unfortunately, I have never used the Zoom so I would not be able to give a fair assessment. My understanding is that these two units do have almost the same feature set, so I think your decision may come down to brand loyalty (which brand you like better). Good luck and happy recording
@@424RecordingThank you for your help and your answer.

Koala sampler (app)
I am considering getting one for live playing. I perform with backing tracks that I have on a laptop. I am sure I could load my tracks onto the tascam. But how easy is it to navigate from song to song?
Honestly, Idk how involved your tracks are, but I used to bounce backing tracks down to a WAV and play them off of an iPhone. Just make sure you put it on airplane mode! But to answer your question, it would be a couple of clicks and turns of the multi jog knob... cheers!

I’m super interested in this! How do you like it as a stand alone interface though?
Hi, Dylan, do you mean when used with the computer? It's awesome! It's great for so many uses. It solves a lot of routing issues I used to run into, you can use it like any other interface, you can use it like a DAW controller (something I've never done and need to explore more). Hi just bought this unit but cant get the level indicators on the right to light up is there something i should be doing thanks.

Can i use this on Logic to Multi track?
Does it handle tempo changes from a 'Song Mode' on a Drum Machine ? So I can alter certain drum patterns to have slow downs and speed ups at different points in the song ? And record at any point in the song on the Model 12 ?
Thanks
Great question. I'm not sure. I know that it does have MIDI but I've yet to explore this
Question? .how hot is it recording to the SD card.
Would syncing the Digitakt to the Tr-12 have been a good thing for adding other tracks in time?
Probably!
Hey I'm not really sure. I have to look a bit deeper into it. Sounds like it would make a good video idea. Cheers!
@@424Recording yes no one adressed it so far. But its not possible via the given inserts only via the inputs (this means you will lose a channel or 2)
Yeah, it seems like it would be either/or
Hello how are you doing I just buy tascam model 12 ,the problem is that I’m always record it using irig2 with this one I can’t make it works if you know can you please help me out where I can coneted or make it work.
@@424Recording "Can you record the input when in MTR mode though"
If I recall correctly, yes you can :)
Cool! I need to check this. I thought I tried it and it didn't work when I was learning the machine. That would be awesome if so!
Hey man
Have u moved to digital because u like it or because Tascam is sponsoring you. ?
Hey man, just got a Rack Mounted Tascam 130 Cassette Deck that I'm going to record to. It loaded with goodies for quality recording so I can't wait to fire it up. Just waiting on the cables. Anyways just to clarify, if I'm recording from my DAW I'll run channels 1 and 2 out to the deck and from the deck out to open channels on the mixer to return. Does that sound right? Thanks any help would be appreciated.
I think that sounds right, Dean! That sounds fun! Cheers!
Can you get more than left / right out of the Digitakt into it? Could you have 6 different drum sounds coming Into seperate tracks on the Model 12?
Is this mixer is actually an incredible sampler / looper 😱?
Or you can run the sub outputs to the monitors. That's what I do. Then I just mute the sub output when I use headphones which are on the main.
