I owned a brand new 388 back in 1990 and am not sure that I've ever had more nostalgia and good memories for any other piece of gear than I've had for that machine. The Model 24 and 2400 are really testing my ability to resist - good work, Tascam engineers and designers! And thanks to you, Travis, for actually letting your viewers hear how it sounds. I'm not sure why reviewers often skip that detail.

Liked and Subscribed my friend - - - Thank you - great to see other old-school Tascam fans like myself - first one for me was the model 144 portaStudio, then the 244 with those super-cool "quasi-parametric" EQ, (stacked, volume 15 db and sweepable freq) then the 388~ I can't believe to see this old wonder in your studio. I have a small pile of reels runing at 7 1/2 IPS or 15 IPS if I recall - would love to get my hands on that unit again just to remember what all these tapes have for songs from the late 80's!
Thank you! Just got the Model 24 and learning everything before even getting into it now. Wonderful machine and you're so right about the manuals being well made - always for all their units.
Cheers from Geoff in Hamilton, Ont. Canada!

I love the workflow of a DAWless system, I find I stay creative and I commit more to the sound going into the mixer. I might use the DAW for post processing and rendering. I have to say it looks waaaay more fun in what you did than sitting behind a computer for hours.

For sure. I have been spending a lot of time mixing in the box lately and I am trying to figure out a better way. I tried out the new SSL motorized fader daw controller but I don’t really love it. Maybe I will give one of these a shot as a hybrid console lite setup.

I like that you auditioned the "print" of the drums. We used to call getting proper level and clarity to a track by itself a "print" back in the 24 track studio days. Of course this is raw, before any added compression, EQ or use of outboard effects like reverb. Features here that may not immediately be WINNER ideas for newb types are the sections of 48v phantom - this means your delicate ribbon mic can be used on a NON phantom section, while your mics needing phantom, like condensers or Cloud Lifter type set ups, can have their power.
Typically the built in EFX in these newer units are of reasonably high quality (easily the equal of the 16 bit 44khz structure of outboard FX units of the past). Having the ability to act as a multi-track interface with reasonably high bit rate likw 24bit / 48 khz is also good. This means you are working with a roughly $1000 interface, but ALSO with a usable mixer with routing, EQ, a compressor (which you may not really want to use, depending upon where it is in the chain here), and thus, even though this thing is not cheap it covers a lot of bases.

I really want to check this out. Tried to get in touch with the folks at Tascam, but never heard back. That being said, it looks like the perfect board for a home setup or even a semi pro studio. I've had all the Model mixers at one point and they're all great, but this one is the best of all of them plus the phantom power splits and the buss compressor...pretty sweet.
I have a 688 midistudio right now and if there was a way to marry the two boards I would be in love.
    Question:
It has the DAW control features like the Model 12, right? Does it also have midi? I hear that was why the Model 12 had to be digital and not analog like the Model 16 and 24.

That's what was advised, but the results were not ideal. I guess you need to pick your poison. Either go line in, fish for the level you need, and run through all the circuitry, or go into the insert and get a very weak / probably unbalanced signal. I did report this and that the pres are weak, as I mentioned.

How do you use this with your reel to reel? When mixing do you mix the drum tracks first and then bounce them down into a single track or stereo track so that you can make room for lots of other instrument tracks? Like say I want to record a set of drums and then record one at a time 10 guitar tracks to layer together and also 10 other tracks of other instruments one at a time... is that how you do it by taking a group of tracks and mixing them into a single track like say for the drums, and then say doing that again for all the guitar tracks until you get to a point where you have enough faders to be able to mix everything all at once? Obvisouly I don't really know anything about it so I'm just trying to understand how this would work. Also say you record and mix on the tascam 2400, then do you record to the reel to reel to get the tape compression/saturation and then print that back to your DAW?

I never felt good with the regular DAWs. This changed everything, we can simply focus on the music. Less is more.

Lack of high sampling rates like 88,2 & 96K and the need for a 4 band EQ instead of 3 is the only real downsides. Great for recording a rehearsal or a bedroom drummer who doesn't mind working at 48K. All the other new feature are great lets hope Soundcraft brings out a revamped Signature MTK Mark 2 with high sampling rates.

I got rid of my presonus 32s and NSB 32.16 to get this. If you can’t afford an API desk but want a proper inline console this is it. The master out will let you use a proper pro mastering chain. Don’t think this is a toy. I have a $50000 studio and this works just fine. You do not need higher sample rates. You will be mastering at 44.1 in atmos.

@@marcpinion What? 96K has been the standard since 2014. Apple won't brand you song Hi res Lossless in Apple Music unless its 24bit 96K. The Dolby TrueHD codec is 96K and has been the Atmos standard for movies since the Blu-ray disc. Even the Free versions of streaming apps push out 48K lossy files but on upload they prefer 96K. The Tascam console isn't an inline desk it does not have 2 full sets of inputs on 1 channel. But hey if you like it thats great. But its not what I expect from Tascam after they have been pushing 96K in their flagship Tascam Sonicview digital consoles. They added some good feature but the lack of standard sampling rates is just lack luster on Tascam's part. Cheers

why would you want to use a multitrack tape recorder when it has a built in digital recorder but you do have groups and auxiliary outs so how many tracks is your tape recorder?

You do have individual outs. You use inserts just like we did with tape in the 1970s.
