Ron, I started following your videos last Spring (2021) to get ideas regarding products to improve my lawn. We had major construction on our home during the summer and fall of 2020 and our once beautiful lawn was nothing but mud! Construction was completed the second week of December (2020) and I knew I had my work cut out for me in the Spring of 2021. I followed all your suggestions on lawn growth, seeding, fertilizing, cutting and tools to make the job easier. You should see my lawn now (April 15, 2022). WOW! Beautiful green thick grass is now once again a permanent feature of our home 🤗. I could not have done it without all your recommendations…I can’t thank you enough! Happy Easter, Ron!
Thanks so much Dr. Who. I really appreciate the kind words. Glad to have played a small part in improving your lawn. Sounds like you had major work done. Glad the lawn is getting back to where you want it to be. Happy Easter. 🙏😎
Ohhh man that looked like a fun day at the office...Good work man! That was like a day at Disneyland for yard lovers. That top dressing machine is awesome!!!
Oh it definitely was "funn" funnnnnnnnn". I'm glad it's over Robert. A few hours into top dressing I was questioning my life's choices. 😂 Thanks for watching sir.
So been checking out a few of these vids of yours. I recently did an 8k sod job on my front yard. Purchased this home 3yrs ago. Previous owner cut corners on the lawn. Only laid sod 20 ft from edge of house into yard. Front yard is 265 ft wide and 60 ft deep. Previous owner had home for 6yrs. I purchased the home and 3yrs in realized that the St Augustine would never grow out to cover front yard. So being I live in between Houston and Conroe Tx where we either get massive amounts of rain or no rain for 30 days with 92f to 100f deg everyday I needed to do something. Front yard had 7 pine trees 60ft to 90ft tall. Th excessive pine straw and cones year around absorbed every drop of water on one end of yard along with the sweet gum and black jack oaks and the Chinese ash the grass didn’t stand a chance. So I removed 4 pines 2 sweet gums and 2 ash. Ground all the stumps removed all debris and brought in 30yds of top soil 25 yds of farmers compost and tilled it all in. Extended sprinklers system with 3 new stations 11 heads and 530ft of pipe. Started watering about 30 minutes a day along with some real good rains and in 2 weeks my front yard is unrecognizable. My question for you is I would like to begin applying a leveling material. Since my lawn is so young I don’t want to weaken it. In a month the temperature here will begin reaching the mid 90’s f. I will of course continue watering all I need. I have a water well so unless we run into a 90 day drought I should be ok. So let me know what you think i should use.
Wow MP. You're doing a MAJOR renovation. Very, ver cool. You can apply leveling mix without issue as long as you go light. Don't bury the entire lawn in sand. What you saw me do in this video about as heavy as you need to go. With temperatures going up, the lawn should push through the sane quickly and recover nicely. Between all the tree removals, stump grinding and top soil work, you're definitely on the home stretch. Keep going. The nice thing about leveling your lawn with a 70 /30 sand/compost mix is you can do it several times in a season if you want. The big thing is to go light. Thanks so much for watching and definitely keep me posted on how the lawn develops. 👍😎
Thanks LG! It should be fun to document. You'll see how it goes, good, bad or the same! Gotta have that PPE baby! I know how you guys like the glasses. I held myself back from putting them on during the video. Thanks for watching.
Oh I was questioning my life's choices a few hours into top dressing for sure Richard. The "suck" was at level 11 on this one. I'm happy with how it came out though. We're getting a lot of rain over the next couple of days so excited to see how everything settles in. Always awesome hearing from you sir. Hope all is well. 🙏😎
@@RonHenry All is good here Ron... thanks for asking. We are getting the rain also... 1.6" since this morning. I reckon your bermuda will now jump once the sun reappears.
@@richardgleason5953 getting a small downpour here too Richard. Once the sun comes back Wednesday or Thurs the lawn should bounce back quickly. I'm happy with how it's managing all the rain hitting it. That said, I do see a small low area that needs just a littttttttle bit more sand. :-)
Check out my TH-cam stories Christopher. You can see regular updates. You have to use the TH-cam mobile app to get them though. Lot's a behind the scenes content there. Be careful what you wish for with me being your neighbor. We'd be always messing with you lawn. You might get tired of me. 😂 Thanks for watching.
Always top quality tips and tricks for those who pay attention. This video has lots of them even for those of us who don’t have a lawn that size. It’s going to be another great year and I can’t wait to see how your lawn does!
Thanks nick. That's the idea. To provide hours worth of value in as little time possible. The size of my lawn doesn't really matter as far as the techniques shown. All you need is a wheelbarrow, shovel and leveling rake. All the other stuff I used, just save time and my back. 😂 Thanks for watching sir. Appreciate the support.
Heya JP. Literally a nice spread right? It was a ton of work but I'm really looking forward to seeing how the lawn bounces back. Thanks for watching sir. Appreciate the support.
Wow Ron you have really taken off I remember watching your book videos a long time ago , great work you deserve it you work really hard, my neighbors think I am the crazy lawn guy that’s because I watch the crazy lawn guy on youtube
Very nice Torence. If you're in the 90s already, you definitely want to get your top dressing done. Lawn should bounce back quickly. Better now than mid summer. Thanks for watching.
I'm hoping so shmiggz. It was a back breaking process. Happy it's done. Only thing left for this season now is to enjoy mowing the lawn. Appreciate you watching. 🙏😎
Most definitely Andy. I'd still be out there if I were using a wheelbarrow. The machines save time and help with more consistent application. Thanks for watching man. Much appreciated.
Hey Mr. Henry I love watching your channel and watching how you are maintaining your Arden 15, I have a Yukon and Manaco hybrid Bermuda lawn I started from seed in Marietta/Smyrna, Ga. I wanted to comment that your goal of topdressing with the 70/30 mix is to create a sand cap, like the professional turf fields have. So whenever you core aerate your clay base soil it is important to remove all plugs on the lawn, "how to with Doc" really covered in his aeration videos for his green, or his lushes common Bermuda lawn that he has been aerating and leveling for several seasons. He points out that the clay that is pulled out during the aeration process should be removed because when it is left on the surface it can be smashed flat by equipment causing little bumps that do not mix well with the sand leveling, thus preventing you from developing a greens grade rooting mix cap that you are going for, and cause you to have to level even more to get a rooting cap of about 1.5"-2" thick. What I would suggest base on the nutrient program you have, is that you run a rotary mower at an inch, on mulch setting, so to grind up all the cores and help return the nutrients from them into the soil in a way that won't cause you to have to level your yard even more to get the results you desire.
Thanks for chiming in Broc. The plugs on my lawn from aeration were broken up when I worked the sand in with the leveling rake. I've not experienced issues with any of them getting mashed flat and causing bumps in the lawn. I could totally see picking up plugs if you're creating a green in your lawn but that's not my goal. I'm only mowing just under half an inch so very far from actual greens heights of cut. Appreciate the feedback.
@@RonHenrythe point about the low height comes in because of how thick your canopy is. So if a person with mostly clay Georgia soil, like mine, would want to pick up the cores since the clay around me tends to not break down to a small enough size to work into the canopy of low cut heights. One of the reasons I like to remove them is so that the aeration holes could be entirely filled with rooting mix/sand, allowing for more water penetration. thus allowing you to remove some clay from your soil and replace it with the nutrient from granular products like you did. Hope your lawn holds in there through these storms so I can see the Adren 15 truly outcompete the common that is in there. Also these storms will really be a test to see how well the Level mix works to hold seed down and not wash out like people say river sand tends to do.
@@brocbailey9384 I think you should remove the cores if you think there's a big benefit to it. I just posted to my TH-cam stories about the state of the lawn with all the heavy rain coming down. So far so good. Thanks for watching sir!
@@RonHenry yea man I still have a gallon of the liquid in just scared to use it now lol. Wish I lived near you I would be picking your brain all the time lol
buddy you got me feeling bad about my lawn! LOL that lawn was amazing before you started! I actually dug out my bagger for my lawn after watching your videos. My son says im ate up, because now I want to top dress my lawn.
Nothing wrong with wanting to make your lawn better gixerman01. Now you have the entire process outlined. Should make it easier to pull off once you get started. :-) Let me know if I can help answer anything. Appreciate you watching. 👍😎
Wow wow. The rentals alone must have been really expensive. I wish Super Sod was available in Texas. I will have to find another substitute 😜. I have the rake and it’s awesome . Thanks Ron !!
Heya Phillips4 Energy. It wasn't cheap but renting the equipment is WAAAAAAAAY cheaper than paying someone to top dress the lawn. You should be able to find a SuperSod equivalent in Texas. Call around and look for places that carry a screened top dressing mix. That will minimize how much trash is in it. Appreciate you watching the content. Thanks for the support.
The edditing and content of this video is top notch! Wow, your lawn is 3 times bigger than my entire property, and I already have the biggest property in my area. It must be a ton of work to keep it as nice as it is. Over here, this year's spring is very cold with frost at night time even in May (last year we were sweatting at this time of the year). This realy slows down the germination process of my new lawn, and the pigeons have really developed a taste for my seeds. I have been re-applying seeds three times since March and it is still full of brown patches (also thanks to the pigeons). Can't wait for temperatures to finally match the time of the year.
Thanks so much Ewoodster. The edit was a ton of work. Fairly happy with how it came out though. The lawn is fairly large but not the biggest. It is one of the most flat lawns after Alex's. It only takes about 1 hour to mow so not too bad. Sorry to hear about the birds having a feast in your lawn. Warmer temps should be here soon at which point you should get better germination. Let me know if I can help with anything. Thanks for watching the content. Appreciate the support.
Great video, there's another type of machine I don't know the name of it, but it's almost like the one you ate using, but it's more like a spreader, it spreads out wider to cover more space, and saves a lot of time. Thanks
@@RonHenry yes sir!! I can understand that for sure.. Btw.. i learned quite a bit listening to your Q&A's every friday and now my tiftuff is looking so dang good.. its filled in very thick at 0.5" being cut almost daily ever since I got my swardman... It looks so good that my wife told me "the grass looks fake".. thank you sir!!!
They do Joshua. They're just difficult to get your hands on. For most people, the drop style is better since it allows you go heavier in the areas you want. The broadcast style is better for lawns that are already smooth. Appreciate you chiming in man.
Can you send me pics Raphy? A lot of the process is documented at a high level in this playlist. It shows the transformation from a typical lawn to something that looks more like what I have now. th-cam.com/video/49OXqXGNe28/w-d-xo.html
I’m interested to know how much a project like this would typically cost. Including all the rentals and stuff. Overall I think it’s a very informative video. Thank you.
Just a word about Big Yellow Bag - the product is not consistent from franchise to franchise. What you received was exactly what I wanted and expected. However, I received a bag that was a high percentage of their rich black garden soil and hardly any sand. No good for top dressing if the goal is creating a sand cap. I had asked for the ratio of sand to peat moss (which was another problem - it was garden soil, not peat like the website said) and they said it was a trade secret; they wouldn't answer the question. To make a long story short, I had to send back my two bags and go with masonry sand.
Heya Frank. Thanks for letting us know. That's definitely something to bring up to them when ordering the leveling mix; that it needs to be a 70 / 30 blend so that you get the best of both worlds. I'm not sure why they call it a trade secret. It's on their website that it's 70 /30. I don't believe there's peat moss in Soil3. It's grass, wheat straw and manure. You can see the details of it here: www.soil3.com/benefits-of-soil3#how-its-made Sorry you didn't have a good experience with the product. Appreciate you chiming in. 👍😎
It definitely was Striperman. Very happy that it's done and can just enjoy the lawn and perhaps do a spot clean up here and there. Lawn should bounce back quickly.
Great video..... Funny you didn't mention cost of project..... Lol.... I'm guessing a small fortune.... Wish I could afford to do all that to my yard.... I'm sure your have excellent results....
It wasn’t cheap John but still much cheaper than paying a service. Looking forward to seeing the results from the work. You don’t have to top dress with all the heavy duty equipment. Sand, wheelbarrow, shovel and leveling rake will get it done. Thanks for watching sir.
Great video. I’m going to try some too dressing this year to address some issues. I just hope my newly repaired Achilles holds out since I will be using the hand tool options.
Just go slow and take your time Papa Mows Low. I know a guy that top dressed 4000 square feet using Gorilla cart, shovel and a leveling rake. The manual option can produce just as good or even better result. Thanks for watching sir.
Great video! Hopefully it's holding up well and you aren't getting this 3+" of rain like we are in NW Atlanta... and this is just day 1 of a 3 day forecast.
It's great stuff Shawn. The lawn has recovered very nicely in only 11 days since top dressing. You can see the results from just 1 week after here: th-cam.com/video/3y2bMCy2Qdg/w-d-xo.html
Aerated last friday. I'll get some play sand and mix with the seed and try this method. Gotta get me one of those leveling tools asap. Lowes and Home depot dont have them on hand.
Hi Charles. You don't absolutely have to mix with play sand but I like to do it. Helps the seed go down more consistently. I have a link in the description for the leveling rake. Home Depot and Lowes won't have it because it's a fairly specialized product. Thanks for watching sir.
Yeah Michael. I'd be in the hospital right now if I did all that with a wheelbarrow. Even with equipment, it was quite a workout. Still showed how to do it low-tech though. Thanks for watching sir. I appreciate it.
Hey Ron nice job! I’m hopefully laying sod this week the sprinklers going In Wednesday. I’m not sure how often I should water once sod is placed down. I live in west Texas pretty dry hot heat.
Hi Justin. I would water twice a day for the first week and then back it down to every other day. You don't want it soggy but at the same time, don't let the new sod dry out. If the sod hasn't gone down as yet, see about getting some Essential-G since that will help with rooting. It would go down before the sod does. golfcourselawn.store/products/essential-g%E2%84%A2-granular-carbon-free-shipping
@@TheLawnSensei where I took it Lawn Sensei? It was spread all over the entire lawn. Some areas heavier than others but the goal was to not bury the lawn in sand.
Ohhhhhh. Here. Get Soil3: ron-henry.com/topdressing Search your area for suppliers of golf course grade sand and you’ll be good to go. The local gold courses are getting their sand from somewhere nearby. 👍😎
Great Video Ron. I am coming up on my second leveling this year went with 100% sand with River sand Inc.'s USGA product. I am debating going with a mix this year as I don't know if i want to spend the money on the soil3 prices for 8000 sqft or see what River sand carries. trying a little later in the month as my recovery took longer last year when i did it at the end of April. I have found that it is alot harder to find the top dress machine then a dingo. Although Toro does have a shortage of the dingo's. Keystone seams to be the closes place to me with one for rent and I am on the other side of north GA in Canton. The pregnant wife says she will enjoy watching me do it by hand this year as she was my Wheelbarrow filler last year :)
Hi Nicholas. If you've had good results with River Sand Inc's sand, I would just keep using that. If River Sand Inc offers a sand/soil mix then give a shot and see how it works. I agree that the Soil3 level mix is a bit pricey. It's great stuff though. Maybe if you're getting a bunch of it, they might discount. If you can wait until late May to June, the lawn will recover faster. I wanted to get this done now to have some content for you guys and also because temps are where they need to be for Arden 15 to germinate. Keystone is great to work with. Worst case, a wheelbarrow and leveling rake will get the job done too. You'll want help though. :-) Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching Nicholas.🙏😎
These are the kind of videos I like,,Hands on and showing how it's done..Now as a beginner I have to ask why do you need to do this seems like the lawn is already perfect and how much would someone charge per let's say 1,000 Sq ft area to do it by hand??....And do you have a How to book or just the TH-cam videos?
I didn't actually need to top dress this year gringochoppers. I really wanted to make better quality top dressing video than my previous ones. I have a course at golfcourselawn.com There and TH-cam is where my content is.
one of your best Bro all the way down to your choice of music. gotta find that aerator cause that Ryan kicked my butt. just finished aeration and top dressing and of course I got a heavy rain and now sand is all over my sidewalk cant catch a break with this weather
Thanks so much man. The edit took 7ish hours. The final video is 13 minutes but that came from over 9 hours of footage. Took a while to go through all of it. I’d highly recommend the billy goat over the Ryan. Much less hard on you.
Oh there’s tons of it out there Craig. If you’re on your phone check my TH-cam stories for top dressing updates after the rain. The lawn looks great. No sand loss.
@@RonHenry You aren’t joking!! Held on nicely! I’m sure the aeration helped it to stay put as well. My 2 year old turned over a plant on the back deck and has been driving cars through the piles of soil the last few days. The downpour put his ‘dirt track’ into the backyard. 🤣 #freeorganics Note to self: spray pots with preemergent. 😄
Hey Ron! I need your help! Yesterday we double aerated (removed core plugs), leveled whole lawn with river sand, overseeded with Monaco Bermudagrass, and applied compost with a compost spreader on top. When we used the spreader to apply seed and use compost spreader, the sand wasn’t leveled anymore. Do you think it’s okay if I lightly use a level rake in 3 weeks after grass emerges to level it out or is that bad on the new grass?
I pick up my cores because the sod that was laid down was grown in clay. So my intent over the next few years is to reduce the amount of clay in my soil so I remove the plugs and discard them with the other green waste.
Gotcha J Anthony. My soil was the exact same way too though. It's become more sandy as I've top dressed it over the years but I started out with that red GA clay we all love.
Hi Ron, great video. I am trying to decide between the 36” or 40” R&R rake. Our property is about and acre with 3/4 of that being grass. I would probably do sections at a time with leveling. Which size should I go with?
If you're up for the extra workout, the 40" is a good idea given the size of your lawn. Either will work well though. It's not just the size of the rake, it's the extra material you're going to have to move around too.
Great video! I just fertilized my lawn today and I'm thinking about aerating it and adding a sand mixture to cover it. Does it matter that I fertilized it first before aeration and can I still use the arden 15 after dressing my lawn this time of year. I'm in the south east too and I have Bermuda grass.
Doesn't matter that you fertilized first. Unless you're starting from scratch, really wouldn't recommend Arden 15. It's also been discontinued so you'll have trouble finding it.
If you have a severely bumpy lawn would you level it a little bit at a time to slowly build up a smooth surface or kill it off, regrade, and start over?
Haha. That wasn't the intention D T. Just wanted to show a bunch of different options for doing top dressing. Everything from a wheel barrow and rake, to actual top dressing machine and Dingo. Hopefully that came across. Thanks for watching sir.
What is your endgame for the lawn. If you wanted it to be a total, level flat plane you should have had a grader come in to level your big field lawn. It will always be wavy.
I am in So Cal I have tall fescue in my yard. My biggest challenge is weeds. Particulary nutsedge. I have two pretty active dogs and I am resisting chemicals, but I know that is probably the best way to go. Having said that, what is the best product to minimize introducing carcinogens or other harmful toxins to my fur buddies?
Tim now THAT is the way to get top dressing done. Literally this weekend, I was thinking, "This is why I paid a service to do this the first time." 😂 So much pain. Should be worth it though.
@@RonHenry Wife and I did it last year in June here in Texas....was rough lol. Had the means to have a yard service do it this year so we decided to go for it. Yard is pretty bumpy so maybe next year we will do it ourselves again. Since it shouldn't be a huge undertaking. Keep up the good work sir! Love your videos!
@@timborski1210 Getting a service to do the first correction makes a lot of sense Tim. Now that you know what the process is like, you guys will be able to get the lawn right where you want it. It's a lot of work but very rewarding once it's done. Thanks so much for watching the content Tim.
Hi Ron, Do you have a general rule of thumb for material per 1k? There are plenty of variables but just looking for a starting point when top dressing. Thank you for all you do for the DIY community.
Hi Ron. Yes. I recommend going with 1 cubic yard of material per 1000 square feet. That's a good number that'll ensure you have enough material while also not going too heavy. Appreciate you watching sir.

The nice thing about leveling your lawn with a 70 /30 sand/compost mix is you can do it several times in a season if you want. The big thing is to go light. Thanks so much for watching and definitely keep me posted on how the lawn develops. 👍😎
Awesome video Ron 👍🏾

Well done Ron. I wish I had half of your energy! I'm tired just watching and thinking about it! LOL
Oh I was questioning my life's choices a few hours into top dressing for sure Richard. The "suck" was at level 11 on this one. I'm happy with how it came out though.

Heya Phillips4 Energy. It wasn't cheap but renting the equipment is WAAAAAAAAY cheaper than paying someone to top dress the lawn. You should be able to find a SuperSod equivalent in Texas.

Hi Ron, Great video!!!
Thanks so much Tim. Appreciate you watching sir.
Must be different for the Canadian products and franchises. I wish your product had been available to me north of the border.

@@craigdills9611 hahaha. That's awesome Craig. You gotta take your organic soil additive however you can get it man. :-)
I would use the leveling rake now. It's not going to hurt anything to rake the seed in and knock down any high spots.
With clay you better pick up cores or you will mash them and kill your grass. Sandy cores that just fall apart are fine.
Outstanding video!!!
Thanks so much Johnny. I really appreciate you watching.
Depends on how bad it is. In most cases, I’d say fix what you have.
This is like an edition of MTV Cribs when they go through their luxury cars only replace luxury cars with top of the line lawn equipment.
Haha. That wasn't the intention D T. Just wanted to show a bunch of different options for doing top dressing. Everything from a wheel barrow and rake, to actual top dressing machine and Dingo. Hopefully that came across. Thanks for watching sir.

No I don't, Jacob. I use a leveling rake. Nothing wrong with using a drag if you have a way to pull it.
What is your endgame for the lawn. If you wanted it to be a total, level flat plane you should have had a grader come in to level your big field lawn. It will always be wavy.
