This video is exactly what I needed. I recently purchased a home a few months ago, and the yard is totally hilly! I was thinking I would have to remove the grass in order to level out my yard, but I think this option is more efficient and cost-savings! Thank you, Ron!
Glad it was helpful Howard. You can definitely level a slope. It just takes a bit more patience and time to pull off. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching the content.

Great video Ron. Two questions for you. 1. What is the next best mixture to use to level a lawn, and over seed in the same process. 2. When using this leveling method and you have areas that are much lower than the high points in your lawn. should these areas be over seeded, or should I just allow the grass below the covering to work their way through. Hope this all makes sense. TIA

Great channel. I've been watching a lot of your videos here lately. I just started putting quite a bit of effort into my lawn from a recent custom home purchase. Been working on leveling out the big spots from irrigation lines and getting new sod down. One thing to note, 3 years after this video, price has tripled unfortunately. Trying to use this, even in small targeted areas is just not going to be cost effective in my case unfortunately.

Thank you Ron. Frankly after watching several of your videos I'm confident my son and I can fill in, rehabilitate and level our troublesome lawn. I'm excited to finally have a good looking easy to care for lawn.
That's the best comment Robert. Thanks so much for letting me know that you're getting better results in your lawn from the info on the channel mixed with your hard work. Yeah most cool season people with fescue don't both doing this kind of thing. Fescue is mowed super tall so unless you're trying to fix major dips in your lawn, there's not a ton of reason to do it. It's a lot more common with warm season grass that is reel mowed. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the support.
It absolutely can and should be Piyush Dimri. In this video, I just wanted to show someone new to top dressing how relatively easy the process can be. Mixed with sand, it would be substantially cheaper like you said.
It’s slowly getting there Bermuda Brian. A slope is always a challenge when it comes to top dressing. Balancing act between doing a good leveling job and no going so heavy that you cause runoff issues when it rains. Thanks for watching sir. I appreciate it. 👍😎

My New Go To Channel for Lawn Care Advice!! Can't Thank You enough for all your content, Awesome Job!! 2 questions,1. I have just under 6,000 square feet of lawn I'd like to Topdress soon, how much material (bulk) should I order? 2. How much would the Tru Cut reel mower that you have cost me brand new?
Heya D Cousar. Generally 1 yard of top dressing material per 1000 square feet works well. So for 6k square feet, you’ll want 6 yards. A TruCut brand new is around $2500 depending on options. Give the guys at Reel Rollers a call. They have really good prices. Tell them Ron sent you. thanks for watching the content sir. I appreciate the support. 👍😎
Great tips Ron. I will be doing my first lawn leveling sometime this season. Was hoping to squeeze it in for Spring but if not then definitely in Fall. I am going with a sand/peat mixture of 70/30 . The sod farm that I got my sod and seed from sells it by the sack delivered . 70% mason sand / 30% Dakota Peat that they mix and sack for you. I already have the exact same leveling rake so will be all set when I do it. Like the Carboniz PN for future use though
Very nice Striperman. Your lawn already looks really good. With a top dress and leveling job it will be pool table smooth. Really won't take very much. a 70/30 sand and peat mix sounds great. Especially attractive if you can get it already mixed.
Hey Ron I'm about to start leveling with 100% sand for the first time.. I was thinking about stacking some organic material ..later in the season..that product is perfect 👌.. no matter how much it cost..ITS ALL ABOUT THE SOIL sir..with me thanks
Sounds great Darrell. When you do you 100% sand level, I’d try to put some organic material down before doing the top dressing. You don’t want to pass up the opportunity to improve the soil. Thanks for watching sir. 👍😎
@@fairwaybermudalawn if you have a SiteOne locally you can get it there. I can also see about putting it up on the store, but it will be more expensive because of shipping.
Awesome Chris. That's what this video is for. Wanted to show people that are tentative about leveling their lawns how easy it is to do. After you get the first one done, you can always go back again with a sand / soil mixture. I appreciate you watching the content sir. 😎
@@RonHenry A great idea for another video is liquid Aeration. This season I’m trying out Air-8 to see the benefits on my yard. Want to eliminate the hassle of trying to rent a machine or hiring someone to mangle my yard. If I stay in this course how will impact future leveling choices? Thanks again for all of the intel!! PS. Went to Reel Rollers and picked a Tru Cut last week!!
@@chrisdadda Heya Chris. I think liquid aeration definitely has some benefits Chris. That said, I'm still a fan of physical aeration too. It does a lot for breaking up compaction an fast tracking air, water, and nutrients into the soil. It's a great way to integrate the top dressing material into existing soil. Granted there are people that top dress their lawns and never aerate. It's just something that's made sense to me so I've done it.
That product is intriguing. But i can’t see why i would ever use it alone. I definitely would use it as a mix. If momma ever finds out I spent 400 on just leveling products , that would be the end of my LawnCare escapades. Hahahaha
I agree with your Frankie. Really the product is best used when mixed with sand. I went 100% CarbonizPN because I'm trying to help beginners get into top dressing. If I tell them they're going to have to mix this stuff with sand, it'll push some people away. It's a great way to improve your soil quality. Once they see how green it turns their lawns, they'll want to come back with with a full 70/30 or 100% sand top dress. Just tried to make it as simple and accessible as possible. I put it down fairly heavy obviously. 800 lbs over 2000 square feet is quite a bit. Will be interesting to see how the lawn looks. Thanks for watching sir. 🙏😎
@@RonHenry I totally understand your intent. Last year I did my own mixing of sand and OM to do a 3to1 ratio. I did it during the heat of SC and I thought I was gonna die in the process. So I totally understand not wanting to discourage the newbs. I think this year I may buy it pre-mixed. I’m gonna probably grabs a few of these bad for the spot leveling I always catch myself doing. Looks great for that.
@@FrankieKennethL Thanks sir. For spot leveling it's awesome stuff. The nice thing it's really clean so no issues with having to pick garbage out of your top dressing mix. :-)
New sub Ontario Canada, glad I found your site just getting ready to do to mine . Great video answered all my questions in particular about using organic mtl.Keep up the good work.
Thanks Steve! You might be able to find it locally for $25 - 30. The $59.99 price is because of shipping. It's delivered to your door for that price vs. having to get it yourself. The extra cost is all shipping.
@@RonHenry There is a SiteOne near me, but I don't think they carry it. I am going to see if they can transfer it in for me. Shipping it would be way too expensive I think. Thanks
i know golf courses do the sand topdressing, but it holds no nutrients and it can never hold nutrients. I'm wondering how this will affect the grass long term? I can see the benefits for drainage, but to me it doesn't make sense as you'd need to spend a fortune to then fertilize and provide nutrients to the soil. I take out 2" cores every year and replace with a screened topsoil from my local garden center and it does a great job. I'm on clay soil, and it was pretty bad, but taking out those plugs, adding them to my compost, and replacing with good soil made a huge difference. I see a lot of great lawns doing the sand topdressing, but i'm really hesitant, it just doesn't make sense in my mind to put something that can never hold nutrients for the grass
Thanks so much Jay! Really happy you found the video helpful. Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching.
Sounds awesome blue noser. A good leveling rake makes the job much easier. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching the content.
Ron, I'm glad I found your channel. My new construction soil (common issue) has extremely low CEC level (4.5!). The builder basically removed all the good material, and I'm left with silty clay. My program consists of spoon feeding various fertilizers because of the soils low capacity to retain nutrients. I don't know how many years it will take me to get my soil up to par, but introducing me a products like CaronizPN are very helpful. Additionally, my front lawn has a similar slope. This was very helpful, thank you! If there's any other recommendations you have, I'd appreciate any response.
Hi Joe. It sounds like you're on the right track of adding organic material to your soil. CarbonizPN is a great product. I'd highly recommend it if you have the ability to spread it manually. For a granular option, there's also Essential-G. golfcourselawn.store/products/essential-g%E2%84%A2-granular-carbon-free-shipping Thanks for watching.

Ehhh. If your goal is to only improve the quality of your soil, then yes. If you also want to level your lawn, I would mix it with sand since that will hold the leveling job better than compost and biochar alone. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Appreciate you watching. 👍😎
No problem at all Lawn Defender. Happy you found it useful. Site One often does carry it at a reasonable price. It's a great product. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Ron, I like using a 50/50 blend of the a PGA approved sand and high quality soil conditioner such as what you used in this video. My question is which option provides the best results on a slightly sloped lawn, as you have just done or the 50/50 blend?
Ron, Enjoying the content you have been putting out. Do you have a video on how to seed/plant a lawn on such a steep slope? I can only imagine the challenge you must have in cutting on that slope with a Reel Mower.
Hi J Perez. There's not much to seeding on a slope. I ideally you'd put the seed down into something like CarbonizPN and then roll it in using the technique I show in the video with a reel mower. As far as mowing on a slope, I've got you covered. 😎 Here's a video on doing it with a TruCut: th-cam.com/video/7b7rX678VeQ/w-d-xo.html and one using a Greensmaster: th-cam.com/video/2oBX4nN28oo/w-d-xo.html Let me know if I can help with anything else. BLACK KOW is 6 dollars a bag at lowes and home depot and is top organic top dressing soil. If the average homeowner wants to go that route. Use it all the time on my bermuda.. the 0.5/0.5/0.5 version.
Thanks for chiming in Fred. I'm sure Black Kow is a fine product. It doesn't contain biochar though. CarbonizPN is much more than compost. The biochar improves soil moisture, nutrient availability and uptake. It also doesn't go away like compost does. Biochar literally stays in the soil for hundreds of years. It's a different class soil improvement. Appreciate you watching sir.
@@RonHenry that's the key , manure is all nature ,boichar is an additive that needs other ingredients, studies back to 2016 shows the results , of a 2 year field study, but there is always a product craze in the lawn world. Boichar is just burned wood, heck the wood ash I burn in my offset bbq is boichar, and yes I put it on my bermuda.
@@fredsandford9342 the wood ash off your bbq isn't charged Fred. It doesn't work the same way as the charged biochar in CarbonizPN and CarbonPro-G. The charged biochar has a pH in the mid 6s which will help raise pH in acidic soil and lower it in alkaline soil. Non-charged biochar typically only raises pH and also doesn't improve nutrient availability as well as the charged variants. Great comment. Thanks for chiming in sir.
It's called boichar pyrolysis.. boichar can be made using from a simple campfire , boichar is nothing new, just new to people that don't know.. cow manure not fresh but aged does all that pH 4.8 to 6 range and alkaline etc.. why not go all the way up to the carbonizPN DJ.. it's all compost with a boi additive , it's the compost that does all the work.. pH, water renting etc. Keep up the great work.. does your community do yard of the month?
@@fredsandford9342 Heya Fred. Mmm no yard of the month right now. I'm not sure how I would even run something like that. I guess take in email submissions?
Thanks for Vid. Sure is easier to level out the top soil when your ground/grass is already level like yours, no bumpy uneven spots. a lot more difficult when there are tons of uneven bumpy areas. Anyhow, i live in Oregon and finally the Fall rain is coming in a few days. Would now be too late to lay down top soil and a little extra seed since the sunshine is going to be going away? I have quite a few bare spots/bumpy spots. Of course i would be scraping off the top dead grass first, but just curious if it will be a waste of time this time of year? Thanks!
This time of year isn’t the best Nick. When it comes to leveling, just start where you are. My lawn was uneven at first. It took several leveling sessions to get it where it is now.
It is a bit pricey to apply JaFearPlays. It's great if you're trying to create really fertile soil for seeding. The reel mower makes for a great roller in a pinch. Just make sure you disable the reel! Thanks for watching. 👍😎

Hi Ron, I just had an irrigation system installed in the Austin area - clay soils and hybrid bermuda. Any recommendations on how to fill up the trenches to help my lawn get back to normal? At $60 a bag, it would be very expensive to cover all the trenches
That looks like some nice fine material! How much is that stuff a bag? The Scott’s soil is 8 bucks a bag and not even that fine and has wood chips in it!
You didn’t watch till the end! 😂 I give the price there. It’s $22 - $23 per bag. Not cheap but amazing product. carbonizPN has no wood chips or other garbage in it. Extremely clean stuff.

I cringe when I watch it, but it still gets views. I'll look out for new pictures. I should be able to do a better job next time around. :-) Thanks for chiming in man. :-)
That works too Jerry. As long as whatever you're using is clean, you should be fine. CarbonizPN is about as good as you can get since you're basically topdressing the lawn with compost and biochar. It can easily be mixed with masonry sand for an excellent top dressing mix. I made this video targeting beginners who don't want to do anything of that. Pretty much if you want to turn your grass super green and leveling isn't the primary focus, it's perfect.
@@RonHenry okay. Thanks. I will get two yards of loam . I have a sifter that I will put over wheelbarrow to assume it's as fine as possible. Then I will repeat in mid September when I overseed my lawn. Will also do aeration and dethatching. So after areration do I overseed first or apply loam first? Or should I try and mix seed into the loam and then apply? Much appreciated for your help and guidance.
Dumb question but how do you feel about using Pete moss for a project like this? I have some left over from seeding some bare spots. Think it would work?
Hi Waugh. I've never used peat moss for filling in a lawn. It's usually used for covering seeds or for introducing a bit of organic material to a top dressing mix. I'd learn more towards soil or a sand / soil mix for an even better result. Thanks for watching. 👍😎
Thanks so much Waugh. Hopefully the content is useful. If you’d like to see a video on using a sand / soil mix have a look here: th-cam.com/video/AIsC6dxs248/w-d-xo.html
Can i put the seeds on the top dressing after if I want to overseed. I'm afraid, if I do the top dressing after the seeding, that I'm going to push the seed too much. Should I use my lawn leveller to work in the seed?
New to your channel, and I've gotta say your lawn is beautiful (house isn't too bad either 😉). If you have results like that then you've got a new sub!
It would Cody. The goal for the front lawn was primarily to create a healthy bed for overseeding Arden 15. You're right though that soil isn't as good for top dressing for structure as sand.
You got me calling my local site one and FIS outdoor to see if they carry CarbonizPN. Not a direct comparison since you are trying to level, but how would you compare this product to Lesco's carbon Pro G? My store always has it in stock. It's been hard to spread but I may try to just use your technique and use a few bags to spot level the front yard in a few places. Thanks as always Ron!
Heya Sean, CarbonizPN is the non-prill form of CarbonPro-G. It also doesn’t have the microbial package that CarbonPro-G does. It’s a 50/50 blend of compost and biochar. If your main goal is leveling, I’d mix it with a bit of sand since that will hold up better over time. You can also use it spot level / treat small areas of your lawn that are struggling.
I need to do my lawn with soil it was put on top of alabama clay and has no root system. I’ve had it aerated last three years and I’ve gotten the soil better had it tested twice so it’s getting there but soil may help I think
Great video will follow your tips carefully! One quick Q. I have Tall Fescue here in Ohio and I’ve just over seeded because my grass dies every Summer in some areas. What grass seeds can overcome hard summers and Snow in Winter?
I don’t have an answer on that one Brian since My grass isn’t fescue. In the summer, keeping water on the fescue will prevent some of the kill off. Hope this helps.

Ehhh if you’re trying to raise an area 2 - 3 inches, I’d be sure to use some sand. It will hold the leveling change better than purely organic. You can probably build that up over the course of this season. Just do a little at a time.
Hello Ron. How often should I water my new sod? It is only a few days old and I'm worried abt it drying out. I live in the middle part of South Carolina and just laid Empire Zoysia. The temp is mid to upper 80s the next few weeks with minimal rain. Thanks for the help🤝🏾
I’d only give it an inch to 1.5 inches per week Tim. That should be plenty to keep the new sod happy. I wouldn’t water it everyday. The heat will help the grass start growing well.

Thanks Eudes. It's getting there slowly. I appreciate you watching sir.
This would never work on my bumpy fescue lawn, but it is an interesting method and thats the first I have ever seen of a tool like that for leveling.
@@RonHenry Thanks for the info.
Anytime sir. I appreciate you watching.
I think carbonized PN can be mixed with sand for a good leveling mix (70-30) ratio similar to golf course
..that way bringing the project cost down.
It absolutely can and should be Piyush Dimri. In this video, I just wanted to show someone new to top dressing how relatively easy the process can be. Mixed with sand, it would be substantially cheaper like you said.
Good job Ron

Thanks for the info, i plan on leveling my backyard
Very welcome Brendan. Glad it was helpful. Good luck on your leveling project.
Man, you have that front slope under control! Good video
It’s slowly getting there Bermuda Brian. A slope is always a challenge when it comes to top dressing. Balancing act between doing a good leveling job and no going so heavy that you cause runoff issues when it rains. Thanks for watching sir. I appreciate it. 👍😎

Awesome Job!!

@@chrisdadda has worked great for me!
I did it during the heat of SC and I thought I was gonna die in the process. i know golf courses do the sand topdressing, but it holds no nutrients and it can never hold nutrients.
I'd go with a blend of sand and soil.
Mirimichi/sand combo in my brain now because of you. Expensive but might be worth it for my worst spots. Good vid, you gained a new follow. 👍🏼

Ron, I'm glad I found your channel. My new construction soil (common issue) has extremely low CEC level (4.5!). The builder basically removed all the good material, and I'm left with silty clay. Ron, I like using a 50/50 blend of the a PGA approved sand and high quality soil conditioner such as what you used in this video. My question is which option provides the best results on a slightly sloped lawn, as you have just done or the 50/50 blend?
If your goal is to level, you’ll want sand in the blend.
Pretty good video! Man that stuff is a bit expensive. Great tip about using the reel mower to set it so it doesn't wash away!
It is a bit pricey to apply JaFearPlays. It's great if you're trying to create really fertile soil for seeding. The reel mower makes for a great roller in a pinch. Just make sure you disable the reel! Thanks for watching. 👍😎

Hi Ron,
I just had an irrigation system installed in the Austin area - clay soils and hybrid bermuda. Any recommendations on how to fill up the trenches to help my lawn get back to normal? At $60 a bag, it would be very expensive to cover all the trenches
I would use fill dirt to fill the trenches and then top dress with a light coat of CarbonizPN to encourage the grass to fill in faster.
That looks like some nice fine material!
How much is that stuff a bag?
The Scott’s soil is 8 bucks a bag and not even that fine and has wood chips in it!

Great video! What about using the best quality potting soils?
That works too Jerry. As long as whatever you're using is clean, you should be fine. CarbonizPN is about as good as you can get since you're basically topdressing the lawn with compost and biochar. It can easily be mixed with masonry sand for an excellent top dressing mix. I made this video targeting beginners who don't want to do anything of that. Pretty much if you want to turn your grass super green and leveling isn't the primary focus, it's perfect.
I can do this. However, I’d like to add grass seed down also. Do you think this would be successful in order to thicken the lawn?
That's a good strategy if you have cool season grass Susan. Not really necessary for warm season grass like Bermuda.
Is it ok to top dress a lawn in July. Just adding loam to help level the lawn.? Please advise. Thanks
Sure can Brody. No problem at all with that. As long as the lawn is actively growing, you’re good to go
@@RonHenry okay.

Can i put the seeds on the top dressing after if I want to overseed. I'm afraid, if I do the top dressing after the seeding, that I'm going to push the seed too much. Should I use my lawn leveller to work in the seed?
If you’re doing a lawn renovation from seed then, yes. I would top dress, lay the seed and then work it in with the leveling rake.
New to your channel, and I've gotta say your lawn is beautiful (house isn't too bad either 😉). If you have results like that then you've got a new sub!
Thanks so much 0BURN. It's been a long term project. I enjoy working on the lawn. Thanks so much for the support and for subscribing. 🙏😎
I’m digging the house too. Large lawn also what brand of reel mower is that
Your lawn was like a golf green, completely short and therefore easy to work the product in. How can you do this with the more typical2.5 - 3" grass?
Mow it shorter before spreading the product. If the grass is over 2" you're going to have challenges with doing this.
Great video but wouldn't the compost mix break down compared to sand?
It would Cody. The goal for the front lawn was primarily to create a healthy bed for overseeding Arden 15. You're right though that soil isn't as good for top dressing for structure as sand.
Does the same process work for taller cool season grass? Or need to cut down to 2” to get better results?
You can top dress cool season grass too David. It's easier to spread the material if the grass is shorter though.
@@RonHenry thanks as always Ron. Just sprayed my biostim pack for the first time this season. Yard coming in quite strong already! Loving it.

Thank you for all the tips, suggestions, pointers and where to purchase the product. I will definitely be doing this exact thing this year. I have some spots along my sidewalk that need to be raised 2-3 inches. Is that too much at one time using this product?
Ehhh if you’re trying to raise an area 2 - 3 inches, I’d be sure to use some sand. It will hold the leveling change better than purely organic. You can probably build that up over the course of this season. Just do a little at a time.
What's the name of that grass you have? Looks great!
It's Bermuda Eduardo.
